OU Notes: This is a previously uncirculated source for this show and in comparison to the prior most recently circulated source (etree.org - http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=19586)
offers us the following:
- a known lineage without a stated cassette generation (or the uncertainty of one)
- a couple of additional minutes of between tunes banter and stage announcements and most importantly,
- an improved fidelity. Noteworthy, are a more complete Bill Graham outro following Caution and the right and left channels remaining intact from the transfer as they appear to be reversed on the prior circulating source. Also, tracks are now all at the correct pitch vs. being a semitone flat on earlier circulating sources.
Track editing, pitch correction, minor edits and sector boundary correction and verification done by Seth Kaplan via CDWAV, Cool Edit 2k and Traders Little Helper, respectively. Entire show was pitch corrected up one half step via Cool Edit 2k and Apple GarageBand.

* Emcee on "The Beatles aren't here" is apparently NOT Tommy Smothers as previously indicated in notes to the prior most recently circulating source of the Dead's set at Monterey Pop. The emcee is currently stated to have actually been Peter Tork of The Monkees who MC'd at the festival and whose voice on audio was compared to that of Tork introducing Buffalo Springfield on the outtakes disc of "The Complete Monterey Pop Festival" DVD and determined to be a match. (Source: Billy K. at etree.org - http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=19586)
** With regards to the Alligator > Caution potentially non-Monterey source issue noted on Deadlists and quoted below, it appears that the additional Bill Graham outro segment in addition to comparative listening across multiple selections serves to support the notion that this part of the tape is indeed from Monterey due to both its stated content and from consistency with the other material in terms of general ambience, audience sound and unique sonic characteristics appearing throughout all of the material. First off, on the earlier source(s) Bill Graham's voice trails off half way through his opening remark after Caution, loosely interpreted by Deadlists below. The new source doesn't trail off and he can basically be heard to say, "Let's go just one more time, let's hear it again, The Grateful Dead", perhaps indicating this as a possible ending to an encore. Furthermore, he continues on with a few more lines, the most informative of which is:
"When they talk about those peace talks this week, they should come out here first for a couple of days." Preceding this statement he specifically names the following individuals who were in fact, then recent and upcoming peace talk participants:
President Lyndon B. Johnson/Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol/Russian Premier Alexei Kosygin. According to Deadlists, 6/18/67 Monterey Pop was the last show played prior to 7/13/67. Graham's statement referencing "those peace talks this week" likely refers to the well publicized upcoming Glassboro Summit Conference featuring Johnson and Kosygin scheduled later that week for 23-25 June 1967, just five days after Monterey. A week before Monterey, the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, fought between June 5 and June 10, 1967 had featured Eshkol as a key player in the peace negotiations and was an inspiration for the Glassboro Summit talks between the U.S. and Russia. This, along with general consistencies amongst several sound factors, appear to support Alligator > Caution as being from the same performance as the rest of the material featured within the tape.

From Deadlists (as of 07/10/2011): Comments: Alligator > Caution may not be from Monterey. What makes me suspicious is that at the conclusion of Caution, Bill Graham is heard to say something like "let's hear it for the Grateful Dead." Bill Graham was not the emcee at the Monterey Pop Festival, so it's doubtful he would introduce the band from the stage. However, some folks have speculated that since Graham was in attendance and a friend of the Dead, he might have done the intro and or the outro as a "guest emcee." The Alligator is a curiosity; it's a very primordial version without vocals

Grateful Dead: Seastones Concerts 1973 (Soundboard) FLAC

These are 4 CDs of Seastones shows. 1-3 were originally distributed by the Bay Area Traders Group (BATG) as 11.28.73, but are thought by some to actually be 3 different performances. This issue, and others, were discussed
extensively on Deadlists. The Tarot outakes were on side 2 of the second tape. The origin of the Dominican College, San Rafael show is not known by me.
Some history: I was attracted to this show by the Compendium vol 1 review. I went looking for the tape, but was turned down by an analog trader who suggested I seek out a DAT copy. After some more searching, a kind DATster
spun a CD copy for me. Upon examination, it turned out that the quality of the DAT copy was lower than the copy owned by the analog trader. He finally relented and loaned me the tapes, but not until after comparing quality with the Compendium reviewer's tape. It is probably relevant that the DATster got the tape from the DAT branch of the BATG tree.
The shows are a bit hissy, but are the best quality of 4 copies checked. The Compendium reviewer gave his copy an "A", but I'd call the selected recordings A-/B+. I digitized the tapes (Denon, P-200, AWE64, CoolEdit96), set track markers (kindly provided by the analog trader), rejoined overlapped sections providing coverage over tape flips etc and
burned to CDR (CDRWin, SAF-RW226, TDK blanks).

This was a very interesting exercise in Grateful Dead tape archaeology.

From the Taping Compendium, I assume these are culled from various studio sessions for the Blues For Allah LP and that they are from the March, 1975 time period.
All tracks are of outstanding sonic quality (except for Music which suffers from a horrible cut at the end). All in all, an interesting look at the embryonic stages of some of my favorite songs. Enjoy! Dave

OU: This was a nice SBD recording with only minor issues. Most tunings were cut. These were patched from the AUD source where available. A light Continuous Noise filter was used to minimize tape hiss. The sound was a bit flat so equalization was used to bring up the top and bottom ends a bit. Other specific issues corrected: Start of Ramble on Rose on the SBD had a horrible mix and was replaced by AUD. Rose was also recorded hot with clipping and this was corrected. The cut in Weather Report Suite was patched with an alternate SBD.
The AUD Splice in US Blues was redone. All AUD patches were matched up as well as possible through EQ, Noise reduction and gain adjustments. Misc. loud handclaps, pops and other anomalies were corrected.
All editing done with Diamond Cut DC6 software.

except for part of drums (see below), which was patched with the AUD audio source from the circulating DVD (no source info given).
Edit: SHNs > WAV > Cool Edit 2000/Cool Edit Pro > shntool > FLAC

The following corrections were made (see below for details):
- all tracks put back in phase by reinverting left channel in CE 2K
- multiple dropouts, splices, etc. patched
- first three tracks of second electric set put at end of CD 2 to allow CD3 to fit on one disc. Disc change between CDs 2 and 3 is seamless.
- SBD from 1:32 of GDTRFB to end of the show is higher-pitched; this was corrected in CE Pro (stretched 100.383%) so speed and pitch matched the rest of the show. It sounds like it was either patched in from an alternate SBD or played back on a different deck.

Patches: 1st set aud was time/pitch stretched 100.7% in CE Pro and volume matched as closely as possible on a patch by patch basis.
- 8:30-8:33 of Birdsong, patch vol. raised 4 dB
- :46-1:16 in Ripple (noise envelope applied from 0:55.638 to 0:56.016 to prevent clipping after raising patch source 3.1 dB).
- Fade at the end of Ripple was made longer and more gradual
- dropouts in Rooster at 8:26, 8:56-58, and 8:59. patch dropped 1.1 dB
- :27 to :57 of Brown Eyed Woman
- one sec dropout at 2:17 in Lost Sailor
- dropout at 6:25 of Franklin's
- Most of drums from :25 to 10:32 patched with the circulating AUD, with the following exceptions: 11 dropouts from 6:00 to 7:28 patched with AUD from circulating DVD (no shnid). Also, the circulating AUD was a veritable Swiss cheese from 7:54 - 10:32, most likely due to bad audio extraction. I was certain that to patch that many dropouts so close together would sound worse than the original, since the two AUD sources sound so different, so I just patched that whole section with the DVD AUD. The DVD AUD source was deliberately recorded via analog from my DVD player to my Tascam HD-P2 so as to avoid any possible extraction errors.
- Break at 1:32 in GDTRFB patched with AUD, fade in right after dropout was reversed. Sudden increase in volume from 2:11-2:13 also patched with AUD, as increase caused irreparable distortion. AUD time/pitch stretched 99.188% to match SBD. SBD from first break to end of show time/pitch stretched to 100.383%.
- mini dropout in right channel at 2:21 in Good Lovin' patched with AUD. Splice patched from 2:22-2:51. AUD time/pitch stretched 99.188% and raised +1.1 dB, noise envelope of -1.1 dB applied to peak at 2:24 to prevent clipping.
