Joe Walsh: Westwood One In Concert 1986 (Pre-FM) FLAC

Show 86-09 for broadcast the week of May 12, 1986

OU: Back in the early 1990's, I bought a box of record albums from some lady. She claimed her brother was a radio station DJ and had gave her the albums. Tucked in among the other albums was this promo LP in a plain white cover. I recorded this double live album to a cassette and played it frequently. A couple of my friends would often ask me to play "that live Joe" tape.
Several years ago (about 1999/2000), I digitally converted this fine show using my trusty Technics SL-1410MK2 turntable with Audio-Technica cartridge. The vinyl was cleaned with an Audio-Technica record cleaner kit and Dust Bug. The input signal was captured on my computer with a program called GoldWave.
Minimal tinkering was done. The show consisted of five segments interupted with commercial ads and cheesey voice overs. I edited those out with fades. The vinyl was in excellent condition, but there were a few pops and clicks. I used GoldWave's pop/click filter to clean it up. That's it, nothing else.
I have not seen this show offered anywhere else. Sound quality is excellent. The banter in between songs is typical Joe, entertaining and funny at times. Joe plays an acoustic set first and then cranks it up and rocks the house.
Date and venue of the show is unknown. Obviously before it aired in May 1986. "The Confesser" album was released in 1985, so probably late 1985/early 1986.
The band lineup is also unknown (other than Joe Walsh on vocals/guitar/piano).
Also included is a short "promo" that radio stations used to promote the show. I did not include the promo segment on my personal CD-R, but that's up to you.
I provided CD artwork that I made from scans of the album and a random photo. The show fits on 1 CD. The track times on the inside cover are not accurate.

I'm not sure of all of the details but maybe Dan can give us some insight into what happened. Too bad this was the only time post Stones that the two have gotten together to play. OU: "Wow! This is one of those Holy Grail moments. The Danny Johnson era is so overlooked, it's like it didn't even happen. Dangerous Games was a great album, but by that point in time, no one cared anymore. It died the big death commercially, and the tour was poorly attended.
In L.A., they did a co-headline with Rough Cutt, who were also experiencing the same issues.
The show ended with one of Dio's Stars multi artist jamfests. My wife went to this show on a "girl's night out," so I wound up missing it. I've kicked myself ever since. Many thanks for this rare nugget. Hopefully more Johnson era shows surface."~ waxandwayne

OU: This is not the official release from the same venue and tour, it has different tracks, and I also have compared the tracks which are duplicated, they are definitely different versions.
It is possible that this show is not Hammersmith 1986, but I cannot find any evidence to either confirm or deny that, nor have I managed to find a concert listing of Talk Talk's performances to see if they did more than one night at Hammersmith in 1986.

This is from Talk Talk's final tour. Here they are playing some lovely songs, but the two albums that followed this were absolute masterpieces, but sadly were never toured.
They have been quoted as an influence on many, diverse, bands who followed over next decade. I would strongly recommend 'Spirit of Eden' and 'Laughing Stock' to fans of Radiohead, and anyone who loves dark and intesnse music.
I hope you enjoy this show, a hugely enjoyable live performance of Mark Hollis's great songwriting.

OU: This is the recording of that legendary night when it all began.
The roots of The Notting Hillbillies lie in The Grove pub in Leeds, May 1986. In front of a packed house three old friends - Steve Phillips, Brendan Croker and Mark Knopfler - ran through some blues classics and had a few drinks. At the end of the evening, they split the £1-per-head ticket money three ways - just £22 each.
It was the first time the three had played together, but it wasn't to be the last. A couple of years on, and with Dire Straits on ice, Phillips asked Knopfler to produce an album he was making with Croker. Knopfler drafted in Dire Straits' Guy Fletcher to help with the production, and the four-way collaboration slowly blossomed into a full-term project.
Taking their name from the location of Knopfler's home studio, The Notting Hillbillies were born. The record deal, album, promotional video and 1990 tour followed quickly after.
Anyway, back to the beginning; this is the recording of that legendary night when it all began, just one month after the final concert of the Brothers in Arms world tour 1985-1986.
Just three man; Brendan Croker, Steve Phillips and Mark Knopfler. It's an audience recording, pretty good sound quality. (Info from on every bootleg)

OU Notes: I was at this arena last weekend to watch my brother graduate from UNLV. It got me to thinking about this Aerosmith show from the same venue as the band was on its "Done With Mirrors" tour, the band's last before they sold their souls. I also stuck on a pre-gig interview. Good show, Tyler's stream of consciousness before some tunes is a hoot, in particular "Lighting Strikes" when he recalls his bust at Lake Havasu in nearby Arizona in the summer of 1983. Nice recording, bet it sounds brilliant on the master which is no doubt long gone. A bit of a rarity, got this years after the show.
