Wishbone Ash: London 1973 (VG++ Aud) FLAC

Super Rare
Cover-outside
London, Alexandra Palace
August 4, 1973
Lineage: Audience recording>Japanese vinyl bootleg>CD-R>EAC>FLAC(level 8)>DIME>You!
Line-up: Andy Powell - Ted Turner -Martin Turner - Steve Upton
Original tracks:

Vinyl Side 1:
1.So Many Things To Say
2.Rock & Roll Widow
3.Everybody Needs A Friend

Vinyl Side 2
4.Ballad Of The Beacon
5.Phoenix

OU: Here's what proved – after some research – to be Wishbone's August 4, 1973 at Ally Pally show during the "London Music Festival" set to celebrate UK's entry to the Common Market.
Despite the relative failure of "Wishbone Four" released earlier that year, our band were still in the top league back then, as they headlined the 3rd day of the festival, following fellow biggies Black Sabbath and Ten Years After on the previous evenings.
The recording was taken directly from the old Japanese vinyl bootleg "At Alexandra Palace `73" that came in a thick plain white cover with handmade rubber stamped lettering.
Since our heroes played the Ally Pally twice that year (on August 4 and on December 22), there was some uncertainty about which show this recording stems actually from. However, the concert poster announcing as well the August show AND the latest single "So Many Things To Say"
– depicted on the reverse side of the front cover – leads me strongly to believe that it promotes the show in question. I simply find it hard to imagine they decided not to play this new number and single A-side while both show and song are being promoted in combination. Too, like most other artists, our heroes have had the tendency of dropping new numbers after a while, and since "So Many Things" was tough to sing according to Mart, it is pretty likely this number was a contender for getting dropped some time into touring. In fact, it no longer appears on any of the existing late 1973 or early 1974 recordings.
The August 11 NME article - which you can find reprinted on the insert - reveals that this show was obviously the legendary and mythical show with the horn section brought on to boost their encore "No Easy Road". Wow, I would really like to hear that thing before I pass the Pearly Gates.
For some reason unkown to us, this recording never got into trading circulation. It may seem it was perhaps sent by the taper (or someone who got the recording from him) to someone in Japan who edited it down to c. 45 min and had himself made this vinyl album. (Hey, over there, where the heck is the rest of the show?).
I tend to believe the bootleg must have been released sometime in 1974, and the Japanese (or the taper who may have already done the edit) was a dedicated Wishbone fan: not less than 4 out of 5 tracks are from "Wishbone Four", and "So Many Things…" and "Everybody Needs a Friend" are exactly two numbers that were actually recorded along the band's June 1973 tour but eventually left off the "Live Dates" album
Since this album was released in November 1973, it may be that the bootlegger intended this release to somehow make up for that loss – for me at least, and within its sound quality confines, it actually does!
Moreover, this bootleg even seems to contain the only available MK I live recordings of these two numbers. Hoping for someone to please correct me if I'm wrong...
Japanese vinyl bootlegs were always released in small quantities only, in the 70's (some 300-500 copies) but of this one, there sure are much less copies in existence. Aside of yours truly, I know only of Doc John (of course!) to own this thing and another unknown collector who recently offered it for some $1,000 on Ebay.
I got my copy from a long-deceased German bootleg dealer in 1986 who had excellent Japanese sources - and it cost me fortune, then. Still, I'm no hoarder and though I imagine most of the dedicated Wishbone fans will have this show already, there sure are only a few who have this as a 1st generation copy off the vinyl. So, this should at least make an upgrade to your collection.

Wynton Marsalis and Friends: Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives 2006 (FM) FLAC

Rose Theater
NY, NY US
Broadcast date: 2009-11-13
Performance date: 2006-09-28
Arguably the most influential recordings in the history of jazz, Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives and Hot Sevens were the occasion for three Jazz at Lincoln Center concerts in the Rose Theater, Sept. 28-30, featuring Wynton Marsalis and eight other musicians.
Lineage: fm (Onkyo TX8511)>SoundBlaster (Live! 24 bit External)>wav(CD Wave Editor)>flac
Wycliffe Gordon (trombone), Victor Goines (clarinet), and Walter Blanding (tenor sax) join Wynton Marsalis (trumpet) to recreate Armstrong's revolutionary early work, "Satchmo" on "Cornet Chop Suey," "Fireworks," and "St. James Infirmary." 19-year-old pianist Jonathan Batiste astounds with his "stride" technique.

A review: Well my all my teeth are dry from so much smiling. This concert was so energetic, so tightly woven and yet so diverse in individual expressions in sound that I am as pleased as I have ever been from having attended a formal concert. In fact, this concert did not seem formal at all. Despite being held in such an illustrious setting, the sound in Rose Theatre was intimate and the band members were playful in their playing; cheering each other on, shaking their heads in recognition of each other’s virtuosity, and grimacing in sheer delight by the very sounds they created. Each musician took the mic and sang! I expected this from Wycliffe Gordon and have come to understand Wynton, too, might play his voice. I was, however, pleasantly surprised when Vincent Gardner began to scat and by the time the mic made its rounds, Victor Goines, Walter Blanding, and Don Vappie had all made their vocal statements. Don Vappie, fresh as he is, held his banjp in a most curious position as he moaned, sighed and plucked at those strings causing the most melodic/erotic vibrations with his eyes closed as if he knew that instrument as Adam knew Eve…and right on stage in front of a full house. The nerve! What a delight!
Jonathan Batiste, a 19 year old prodigy from New Orleans who is now at Juilliard, played the piano masterfully as if he had always known Armstrong’s music; and, hailing from a musical family, it could not be otherwise. Victor Goines took us back in time, playing only his clarinet tonight. I have never heard a clarinet played more beautifully, more masterfully or with more passion. I never knew the range of that instrument was so expansive. Victor hit notes so far above the staff the notation must not exist (perhaps this explains the stray canines gathered round the exit door?) Victor played energetically, complementing most often and most beautifully Wynton’s sonic movement. Indeed clarinet and trumpet were siamese twins this evening and we were all enriched.
Walter Blanding, of course, played beautifully and had a lovely solo on his soprano saxophone but the period music featured tonight was for brass, clarinet and strings.Ali Jackson, whose playing I always enjoy, was busy as could be sampling various devices attached to his drum kit tonight but, alas, clarinet and trumpet were the glue tonight. Well, there is so much more to say but for now… JG

OU Notes: JEMS master recording and excellent sounding but incomplete recording. The taper's last cassette ran out during Magnum Opus missing the rest the of show from that point on. Kansas was the headlining act this night for the WABX's working man concert promotion with Graham Parker & The Rumour as the opening act and Styx as the middle act. This particular show captures Kansas touring in support of their Leftoverture album.
$1.99 or $2.99 show presented by WABX. I was there for GP, this was his 2nd Detroit area appearance, in support of his 2nd album Heat Treatment. This was, I think, the first time I used my new Teac mic. I did get all of Styx and quite a bit of Kansas (until I ran out of tape...).

OU Notes: JEMS master recording and excellent sounding recording. Styx was the middle act this night for the WABX's working man concert promotion with Graham Parker & The Rumour as the opening act and Kansas headlining. This particular show captures Styx touring in support of their Crystal Ball album and is the first tour to feature Tommy Shaw on guitar.

Simon & Garfunkel: Amsterdam 1970 (Soundboard) FLAC)

ZXX12811661
Live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 21 May 1970
Lineage: SBD > ? > CDR(x) > EAC > FLAC > WAV > Magix ACL (speed correction only) > WAV > FLAC Level 8
This was downloaded in FLAC from a hub and again the lineage is a bit sketchy, but it was definitely extracted from the Yellow Dog bootleg "Welcome In Holland" (catalog # YD 059/60). The recording clearly ran too slow -- though by no means as slow as the first copy of the concert I obtained, back in the '70's -- so I have speed-corrected it using Magix Audio Cleaning Lab 10 (the speed problems were inconsistent, so I worked on each track individually, making comparisons with many other shows, especially the Paris show from the same month; the original timings are indicated in brackets). I have not applied any noise reduction, although listeners who don't like any hiss might want to do so. Certainly a soundboard, though with some volume fluctuations here and there.
Wonderful rendition of "Bridge" with piano-only accompaniment -- FAR better than the Ohio '69 version with it's crappy thumpety-thump drumming....
Total Time 75:47 (79:56)

Plasmatics: Bergenfeld 1983 (VG- Aud) FLAC

BE077727
"The Circus, Bergenfield, NJ, April 23rd, 1983"
This is the unaltered version (no eq applied).
And now for something completely different: THE PLASMATICS.
OU: I discovered this show just recently (that, just a side-note, stems from my slowest trade ever), tracked and edited it, only to find out that probably the finest example of the band's most uncommon (in terms of bootlegs) and next to last era had been sleeping on my harddisk for quite a while now.
It captures a performance of the PLASMATICS just before they vanished into this KISS-clone called WOW and then surfaced one final time with "Maggots - The Album", thus bringing back to life at least a few of the characteristics that made the PLASMATICS what they were: A band delivering albums that couldn't sound more different from one another. Yet they were all good and original, something that extremely few bands succeed in, imho.
Then, some ten years ago, Wendy put a final end not only to her life but also the PLASMATICS. RIP, Wendy, I owe you the spirit of not accepting things the way they are merely because they are and have always been that way. That is more than most people in the world can say (though it doesn't exactly make life much easier, only more honest ;-)
NOTES: This recording is special in many ways. Not only does it appear to be the only more or less complete concert document from this era, but also does it include guitar and drum solos, is rather good-sounding and includes this unreleased and therefore unnamed, rather proggy instrumental reminiscent of (viewed from back then) future bands such as Mekong Delta or Mercyful Fate (paired with the "epicness" of some of the longer early songs of Metallica), a sequel, in a way, to one of my personal PLASMATICS faves: the instrumental "Plasma Jam". Unfortunately the tape flip occurs towards the end of the song, so that we'll probably never find out how it ended...
Only tracking, some gain adjustment and fade in/out was applied.

LINEAGE: extremely slow trade [2 single track flac files] - Toast Titanium 7.1.3. - AIFF files - Roxio Jam 6.0.3. (tracking) - Sound Studio 2.2.4. (fade in/out, normalize) - sd2f image file - Toast Titanium 7.1.3. (flac (8) - DIME (you!)

Pink Floyd: Uniondale 1975 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

front3
Wishes, Echoes And Desires
Recorded live at Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, New York on 17th June 1975
Log included, no cue
Artwork included
Bootleg 2008 - The Godfatherecords GR267/268

Pink Floyd was always popular in the New York suburbs on Long Island with legendary shows in the early seventies. But the concerts in the metropolitan area in the summer of 1975, and specifically the two at the Nassau Coliseum sealed it in blood forever. (The Wall shows five years later would be Pink Floyd’s apotheosis, but that is another story). Both the June 16th and June 17th shows exist on excellent quality tapes. The second show has more commercial releases beginning on CDR on Nassau Day 2 (Ayanami 105). It was pressed on silver in the summer of 2005 and issued on Nice Live Pair (Highland HL675/676/677/678), a four disc set coupled with the June 18th Boston show and individually as Live At The Coliseum (Highland HL675/676). Wishes, Echoes, And Desires on Godfather is significantly more loud and clear than Highland. There are some digital clicks at some points from the source tape used by the label which are most noticable during the first song and in the middle of disc two, but the actual sound of the tape is an improvement over the Highland.
A review was published in the New York Times after the second show which interestingly singled out Richard Wright for particular praise. The author John Rockwell writes: “While the rock world is steadily inundated by German space-rock ensembles, Pink Floyd keeps indefatigably making music that antedated the Germans and is superior to nearly all of them.
“Not that the English quartet, which played the first of two consecutive evening concerts Monday at the Nassau Coliseum, is purely devoted to rambling, hypnotic instrumentals of the sort the Germans favor. Pink Floyd can boogie, almost, what with the crunching rhythm section of Rogers Waters (bass guitar) and Nicky Mason (drums), plus a fervent saxophone player and two black women singers.
“And the group’s songs have an unusually suggestive poetic quality - great literature, even, in the context of the flatulent peudo-mythology of so many recent space rock lyrics - and the singing isn’t half bad at all, especially that of Dave Gilmour, the lead guitarist.
“But the core of the act remains the instrumentals, and the core of those instrumentals is Rick Wright, the keyboard player. Mr. Wright makes music of a coloristic richness that is more entrancing that almost any of his competition that one can think of, and yet his flights say firmly grounded in lucidity and rhythmic directness. And for all the others’ gifts on their own, they do their best work in support of Mr. Wright.” (“Pink Floyd Plays At Rambling Best: English Quartet Is Sparked By Wright On Keyboards,” John Rockwell, June 18th, 1975)
The tape begins when the house lights go down and the band walk on stage. “Wait a minute. Just wait a minute” Roger Waters says. “Okay this is a new tune called ‘Raving And Drooling I Fell On His Neck With A Scream.’” This song would undergo minor variations in its development before being rewritten as “Sheep.” On this night Wright plays around with some unique keyboard motifs in the first half of the piece. “You Gotta Be Crazy” is sung more than narrated (as was the case in its earliest incarnation) and is missing the barking dog interlude after “dragged down by the stone….”
Waters makes the normal reference to their founder before “Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts 1-5? when he says, “This is the last new song tonight so make the best of it. It is partly to do with Syd Barrett who used to be in our band.” Just before the ten minute mark one of the roadies plays the money sound effects by accident, the sound of coins falling into the cash register. In the final section, during Part 8 Wright takes an interesting solo. The second half of the show is devoted to Dark Side Of The Moon and is given a flawless delivery with Gilmour’s wailing guitar in “Money” a standout. This is packaged in a tri-fold gatefold sleeve and is a great title to have and the improvement of the clarity and sound quality places this in league with the Boston and Los Angeles tapes from this year.
