Notes: When it comes to ranking the all-time, top-10 Springsteen concerts/concert recordings, there are vigorous debates about which Darkness tour shows belong (Passaic vs. Winterland vs. Agora vs. Portland), and even a heralded performance like A Night For Vietnam Veterans (August 20, 1981) has its detractors, those who claim it wasn’t even the best show in that five-night LA run. But NO Bruce collector in her right mind would quibble with the inclusion of The Main Point, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, February 5, 1975.
It is--as it should be--on any sane fan's list of Bruce's greatest shows and rightly so. The Main Point captures the best-recorded transition performance between two splendid eras, previewing new material for what would become Born to Run while still delivering epic readings of early songs like “Kitty’s Back” and “New York City Serenade” (the latter, arguably, in its definitive live performance).
Then there’s the addition of Suki Lahav. She--the short-tenured, one-woman string section of the E Street Band--makes jaw-droppingly sublime contributions to the show-opening “Incident on 57th Street” and the striking cover of Bob Dylan's "I Want You." Throw in "Wings for Wheels" (the proto "Thunder Road"), "Mountain of Love," "A Love So Fine," "Back in the USA" and the rest, and you have a show for the ages.
The Main Point's place in the pantheon is greatly aided by the fact that a recording of the complete set has been available for the last four decades thanks to its same-night (though not live-as-it-happened) broadcast on WMMR Philadelphia. In fact, Bruce and the band's appearance was a benefit for the Main Point itself and the station solicited for donations to be made by phone during the broadcast. The gig happened at the request of WMMR deejay and key early supporter, Ed Sciaky, who serves as the night's master of ceremonies and is mentioned several times by Bruce in the show.
The bootleg history of the Main Point show is a long one indeed. The show was available in edited form on vinyl by the late '70s and tapes of the full broadcast were in modest circulation earlier than that. Awareness of the show really soared in the bootleg CD era, when pioneering Italian label and Springsteen specialists Great Dane Records released the show on the cleverly titled two-CD set The Saint, The Incident & The Main Point Shuffle.
That boot utilized the commonly circulated recording of the broadcast that had been around for years and was presumably made by a fan in Philly. But the Main Point has never been a tape the traded with a known lineage. Evidence suggests that every copy of the show to circulate or see release since all trace back to the same, original, off-air recording first heard on the vinyl boot. The tape edits are the same wherever it has appeared.
As outlined clearly in the entry for this show on the awesome Brucebase Wiki, the broadcast that night was unusual. As noted above, the show was not aired live, but instead reel-to-reel tapes were rolling at the venue and when the first reel was complete, someone ran it over to WMMR where it was played over the air creating a one-to-two hour delay.
The next point is one of modest conjecture, but the basic notion is accurate: at some point in the audio chain between the original recording at the venue and the tape being played back on a reel to reel through the mixing board at the station and over the air, a limiter or some type of auto-leveler was introduced. A limiter automatically adjusts recording levels when the volume goes above a prescribed point. It can help smooth out dynamic material that has unexpected peaks in sound levels and prevent over-recording. An auto-leveler does the same thing but adjusts for highs and lows.
Unfortunately for us, the limiter/leveler employed on the Main Point broadcast was extremely aggressive. When you listen to the FM recording, there are dozens if not hundreds of instances where the level change is audible. Worse still, not only do levels change jarringly at times, but the limiter/leveler itself seems to add a slight clicking sound in spots.
A couple of years after the Great Dane release, a minor miracle occurred. A 10-inch tape reel of the first 90 minutes of the Main Point show made its way into collectors' hands. This reel contained a pre-FM recording of the show, often presumed to be the very tape that was walked over from the venue to the station (though given that it was recorded on both sides and not one, it is very likely a safety copied from the production reels after the fact).
On this recording there is no limiter and the sound quality is far superior to the much more compressed off-air recording. It is a gorgeous, stereo spectacle that made this already special show all the more special. The only disappointment is that the recording was not of the entire show. The last 70 or so minutes of the performance, or what's presumably on a second reel, were never found from the pre-FM source.
But that upgraded 90 minutes spurred a host of new releases, including the first "Masters Plus" reissue by Great Dane itself, which paired the new 90 pre-FM with the original, FM-sourced remainder of the show. Others followed suit, like You Can Trust Your Car to The Man Who Wears a Star (Labour of Love), which used the new and old tape sources and packaged up the CDs to look like the original vinyl boot of the same name. The fan release Prodigal Son at the Main Point attempted to remaster the same sources. Some consider it the best version of the show to date. And Crystal Cat took its own stab at remastering on Main Point Night. Then, earlier this year, yet another version of the Main Point surfaced, as, exploiting a supposed loophole in UK copyright law, British label Left Field Media issued Live at the Main Point as a quasi-official though unauthorized two-CD set. But they too had to work with the same stuff and simply nicked their master from an extant bootleg.
The catch with every Main Point CD to date is that each relies on the same source for the last 70 minutes of the show, that original, well-circulated, off-air fan recording of unknown generation. And while we've all hoped or prayed that someday a pre-FM source of the end of the show would appear to match the start, 36 years later we're still listening to the same old recording. Until now.
Earlier this year, a box of reel-to-reel tapes was obtained from a home-taping enthusiast who lived in Philadelphia in the '70s. Using his Tandberg 3300 tape deck, the man recorded several live radio broadcasts over the years, preserving the shows on reel at 3-3/4 IPS. The tapes had not been played since the late '70s and one of them, as luck would have it, was of WMMR's Main Point broadcast, captured as it happened that night. A fresh, azimuth-adjusted transfer was made and the recording was then speed-correct, de-clicked, phase-corrected and ever-so-lightly mastered to make it sound as good as possible.
Now before anyone gets too excited, this master recording of the broadcast still has the limiter issues of the prior source (only a pre-FM would fix that) and there's still slight distortion at the climax of "NYC Serenade." But guess what, it sounds better. Materially better. Not pre-FM better, but in moments you might confuse it with the first set. Says one knowledgeable and trusted collector: "There is absolutely no comparison between the master FM reel and the Prodigal Son version. This new one sounds so much smoother and warmer and fuller. And the PS version has some sections in mono, as well." It is wide stereo here.
And while it contains no additional music, the new recording does add some deejay chatter, station IDs and closing credits that must have been edited out of the original source.
So for now, until the Angel of Pre-FMs answers our prayers, this upgrade offers the best version to date of those amazing last 70+ minutes of the Main Point. The switch from pre-FM to FM occurs around the 8:14 point in "Kitty's Back" and you'll have no trouble noticing. The first couple minutes of the new FM source seem to be its weakest (also the case on the circulating source), but give it a longer listen and you'll start to realize just how good it is and what an improvement it is on that same old tape we've all been hoping would sound better some day. Now it does. Samples provided.
We've chosen to present this recording as a straight-up replacement for disc two of Prodigal Son. It begins exactly where Disc Two of that set does, so, if you like this, you can swap it out for that disc and you'll have the best possible complete show.

Opera House, Toronto, March 2, 1993

Opening for The Sundays, which I have just posted. I never got the chance to see Galaxie 500, so I was overjoyed when Dean played "Blue Thunder". I bumped into him after the show, got him to sign a CD, and thanked him for playing it. He seemed a bit surprised, for some reason. Anyway, very nice aud recording of an early Luna show. Throw in a Velvet Underground and a Beat Happening cover, and you can't go wrong.
If anyone knows the webmaster at fullofwishes.co.uk, can you let him know about this? It's a wonderfully comprehensive site, but does not have this show listed, and I can't find any "contact me" info. Thanks.

OU Notes: After being tortured by support act Claudia Koreck who obviously overestimated herself and took the polite and modest audience applause wrongly as appreciation and played on and on for more than an hour of painful bavarian "rock" unleashing her foolish lyrics with a bavarian accent on the public - FINALLY The Eagles entered the stage for a fine show that surprisingly turned out to be a real rock show (thanks to Joe Walsh primarily). I really enjoyed the show though I'm not the biggest fan of their later musical output.
A lot of work went into the brushig up of an already nice recording. I hope you will enjoy the music! If you find this recording enjoyable please support the artists and buy their stuff via eaglesband.com No mp3's from this upload, never, nowhere!!! Please don't alter the info file in case of uploads to other torrent sites. Give credit to all the tapers out there when uploading their work onto other trackers. Share the gift of music.

Pink Floyd: Manchester City 1988 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

Manchester Maine Road
Live at Manchester Maine Road, Manchester City UK 1988-08-08 AUD from Liberated Bootleg Cassettes (includes cover scans) - Join Raggedy-Man Dave for the ride!

OU: This two-cassette set was picked up at a flea market somewhere in Europe from a big British girl selling from a stall. I was told by other vendors that she was really mean-spirited and hard to deal with, but I had no troubles with her. Maybe one of you knows who that was?
Anyway, the tapes are from the UK. It's a different deal this night with the band, too. Dark Side Of The Moon is played more like a "banded for radio version" rather than the flow-through one you are more used to. Other performances also seem fine-tuned and rather to the point, vocals sound somewhat strained at times. It makes for a more interesting listen! Nice recording quality, too.
Setlist (run time 2hrs 19m 24s)

CD 1
Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Signs Of Life
Learning To Fly
Yet Another Movie
Sorrow
The Dogs Of War
On The Turning Away
One Of These Days
Time
On The Run
The Great Gig In The Sky

CD 2
Wish You Were Here
Welcome To The Machine
Us And Them
Money
Another Brick In The Wall, Pt2
Comfortably Numb
Run Like Hell

Lineage: Bootleg (purchased) cassettes 1x c90, 1x c60 ->Sound Forge -> minor edits and fades ->FLAC via TLH level 6, sectors aligned and verified, FLAC integrity checked

Marcus Miller - bass clarinet, bass
Wayne Shorter - saxophones
Sean Jones - trumpet
Herbie Hancock - piano, keyboards
Sean Rickman - drums

This is different other versions floating around. This version comes straight off the FM radio and contains the pre-show interview with Marcus.
OU: This outfit played Paris the monday after this particular show at the Olympia but the seats were so expensive that I refused to buy tickets. I am in total disagreement when ticket prices reach a certain level, I consider that something completely elitarist and disrespectful towards those who cannot afford such prices. Fortunately the radio is much more democratic (that's what I love about it!) and the same night of the Paris show FIP (my favourite radio, such incredible programs...)
broadcasted the Juan-les-Pins show. Still, a pity I could not witness this event live.
I recorded this on monday, then I had to leave to Germany for the rest of the week. That's why so see this one appearing with a little delay. Many of you already have this show, so you already know how fantastic it is. The interview with Marcus is also intersting, especially when he mentions that they have prepared the whole set in just 3 (three!!!) days, the first of which they did not touch an instrument... they just talked about the time they had with Miles...
Enjoy!

Pink Floyd: Another Doinker 1968 (Studio) FLAC

62.One of these days Install2
This tape was floating around in West German trading circles in the early 1980's. It consists of three tracks:
Interstellar Overdrive (BBC from December 1968)
One Of These Days (alternate take one)
One Of These Days (alternate take two)

The other two tracks remain a subject of speculation. That's all the information I have. This material is in its best-so-far quality and is presented for your amusement, though not necessarily for your enjoyment. That part is up to you. Nothing here is officially released, and your comments are welcome.
Enjoy! - A Doinker Tape

Pre-FM vinyl 2 record set that I bought in a used record store, for $5.00, the DJ cue sheet was missing. Each disc was treated with Pfan-Stat No. SA-14, and the Discwasher Zerostat Positive Ion Gun prior to play. They where played on a Sony PS-LX300H turntable to a Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder using the Super Bit Mapping function. The resulting CD-R was ripped with Exact Audio Copy. The waves were imported to Goldwave V.5.04 for pop/click fix, track separation, and fade in out as needed.I only use 1 passive run of Goldwaves pop/click fix, since aggressive noise reduction can impair sound quality. The waves were then converted to flac level 8 with Traders Little Helper aligning all sector boundaries.
I removed all the commercials. I faded in on the intro voice over, and faded out on the end credits due to skips in the record. These were the only skips. I included a scan of the label for record one side one.
A great show with all the live favorites and a cover of The Spencer Davis Group's Gimme Some Lovin which Chicago has never recorded. There are a few vinyl pops but not enough to take away from your listening pleasure, so enjoy !

I do appreciate your daily "visits".

Thx again.

extensively on Deadlists. The Tarot outakes were on side 2 of the second tape. The origin of the Dominican College, San Rafael show is not known by me.
Some history: I was attracted to this show by the Compendium vol 1 review. I went looking for the tape, but was turned down by an analog trader who suggested I seek out a DAT copy. After some more searching, a kind DATster
spun a CD copy for me. Upon examination, it turned out that the quality of the DAT copy was lower than the copy owned by the analog trader. He finally relented and loaned me the tapes, but not until after comparing quality with the Compendium reviewer's tape. It is probably relevant that the DATster got the tape from the DAT branch of the BATG tree.
The shows are a bit hissy, but are the best quality of 4 copies checked. The Compendium reviewer gave his copy an "A", but I'd call the selected recordings A-/B+. I digitized the tapes (Denon, P-200, AWE64, CoolEdit96), set track markers (kindly provided by the analog trader), rejoined overlapped sections providing coverage over tape flips etc and
burned to CDR (CDRWin, SAF-RW226, TDK blanks).

This was a very interesting exercise in Grateful Dead tape archaeology.

Syd Barrett - guitar and vocals
David Gilmour - bass
Jerry Shirley - drums

***Neonknight's Notes***
Kbrubaker very kindly sent me this tape amongst a number of others that he obtained around 1980 to see whether it merited transferring and torrenting. My reference point was the late Bernard White's reel copy of the orginal recording, which many trade copies and releases have been made from over the years. After a number of listens it became clear that Kbrubaker's had a smoother, clearer sound.
According to Bernard (I knew him pretty well) the recorder was a 15-year-old who wandered down to Olympia with his girlfriend and tape machine. He chose to stand right in front of Syd's guitar monitor, explaining why his guitar dominates the mix.
The performance probably commenced at around 8pm and no photos from it appear to exist. Melody Maker announced the festival line-up on 28 March 1970. Promoter Bryan Morrison was quoted as saying "In addition to the pop and fashion attractions, record companies and all ventures allied to the record business will be taking part. There will be film shows and high divers. £10,000 in rent has already been spent so far".
Barrett, Gilmour and Shirley seemingly played for less than twenty minutes. Because of a bad PA the vocals were barely audible until part-way through Octopus when somebody balances the mix out properly. Listen carefully and you'll note that a member of the audience shouts for the vocals to be turned up. At the end of Octopus you can hear where Syd unplugs his guitar before leaving the stage.
It took me a little while to get used to hearing this recording at the correct speed after many years of hearing versions that were too fast. Listening to it afresh really adds to the feeling that this is an underrated performance and the band were showing strong promise for what might have been had they gone on to perform again.

***Littlepieces' Mastering Notes for -Syd Barrett_1970-06-06 Olympia- version***
This recording had a lot of level fluctuations, some caused by the recorder, some by Syd, and some by the person running the board. Neon provided me with three different transfers at different levels to enable me to splice the parts together to complete the show and avoid making broad digital gain changes.
Kbrubaker's cassette is a mono recording that was dubbed as two channel stereo. It has a significant phase shift that varies from 18 to 28 samples and its left channel's output is a little higher than the right channel and it also has more high end than the right channel. Given this is a mono recording, the best solution was to eliminate the inferior right channel which eliminated the phase shift and the channel level differences.
For the corrected version I took steps to diminish a series of buzzes and hums during the 30s preceding Octopus, removed several noise artifacts and edited and smoothed a number of recorder stops and starts. I also adjusted the speed which was very fast and varied a little as well.
When comparing this recording to previously torrented versions I noted that it has 15s more audience/tuning before Terrapin and two separate segments of 76s and 18s more audience/tuning after Terrapin. Also, 15s more audience/tuning before Octopus and 5s more after Octopus. The total additional audience/tuning is 2:09m.
Syd's vocals begin to come back into the mix at about 13:25m, around 35s into Octopus. Shortly after his vocals are more stable and the overall mix seems more balanced and at this point is when the thought came to me..........what if? What if these guys had continued the gig then stuck together for a while. A few minutes later the track finishes and you can hear Syd put his guitar down. :(

***Littlepieces' Mastering Notes for -Syd Barrett_1970-06-06 Olympia_LPP version-***
To accompany the corrected version I have produced a LPP version. Other common versions that have been torrented previously are EQ'd, dehissed-NRed, and possibly compressed. Generally, these kind of subjective changes are not appropriate for an initial release so I decided to produce a LPP version featuring some additional modifications.
Splicing parts of three transfers completed at different levels helped to even out the differences among large parts of the recording but it couldn't address the many level differences and drop downs within these parts. I applied various gain changes to several dozen segments in order to further reduce and smooth the level differences. These often required a relative reduction in hiss in order to make the transitions transparent. Some of the more significant level changes that were adjusted occurred during the first 35s of Terrapin, the first 10s of Gigolo Aunt, and the first 90s of Octopus.
There wasn't a lot going on after about ~8k, so I rolled off the hiss starting around this point varying my approach according to the gain adjustment of the segment.
Finally, I applied some EQ to the low-mids and a modest increase to the upper end which sloped to zero before 6k. After this point any increase introduced bad artifacts.
Generally the objective was to maintain the natural sound of an unprocessed lower generation source.

Toronto Concert Hall 1981-10-23 Late Show AUD (Stratcat58 tape)
A much better recording and performance than the early show. Grab it!
Many thanks again to Stratcat 58. This was also a phase-shited mono tape, which has been converted to straight two-channel mono. It ran almost half a semitone slow, also. That's been corrected.
