OU: I pretty much beefed up the sound as much as possible. The band is amazing, and I wanted to bring back the sparkle to the guitar, the bite of the drum and the balls to the bass playing.
As for the hiss, it's pretty much the same as the Pre-FM, I could have removed some of it, but I found it detracted from the visceral impact of the instruments...so I left it intact. The band is rocking enough to punch through it!
I also added a bit of chatter to the end of "Captain Jack" which wasn't present on this pre-FM, it's the line Billy says about not being able to get the song played on radio...I think it fit in pretty seamlessly at the end.

This is an excellent-quality stereo tape of Billy Joel and an unnamed group playing a set at Philadelphia's famous Sigma Sound studio on April 15, 1972. It sounds like the first generation. There's no indication of it being a dub, or that any modifications were made to it before it was posted to Usenet.
I ran automatic phase correction on it, and fixed the track splits to occur at the start of a song, rather than several seconds before it begins, or in some cases, after they had already started playing. No other adjustments were made.

TRANSFER/EDITING NOTES:
This is a fine Billy Joel concert, performance and sound quality-wise. You really get a feeling of comfort and appreciation in the venue and from the audience. The text file that came with the source recording claims it may be a preFM recording, which is certainly the most probable suggestion, henceforth, I listed it as such.
There is a wealth of low end on this recording, which is typical of a preFM source. Unfortunately, it is a little distracting and buries the vocals and other mid-high frequency elements somewhat. I have drastically altered the low-mid range frequency response of the recording and re-balanced the channels which were not in sync with each other. The recording now sounds bright and clear and ultimately, in my opinion, better. This one is for even the casual Billy Joel fan like myself, enjoy!

A great capture of a great show. Early Billy Joel playing in N.Y. - home turf and all that.
No more info on lineage is available to me. That being said, the quality of the recording is top notch. The lack of any noticable tape hiss and clarity of the recording makes me believe this was taped during a fairly recent rebroadcast of the show.
