Depeche Mode: Milan 1984 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

Front
Orfeo Music Hall, Milan, Italy
1984-03-06
Construction Time Again tour
"Hysterika" bootleg

Complete audience recording
Lineage: ??? -> EAC .WAV -> FLAC level 8 -> slowed down 4%, channels independently normalized to -1.0dB, any DC offset centered -> FLAC level 8
EAC & Audiochecker logs included.
A great audience recording. Includes one of the few performances of "Big Muff" during the Construction Time Again tour.

OTHER VERSIONS: There is another audience recording called "On The Crest Of A Wave". It's incomplete and was recorded at a higher level than this bootleg. It sounds somewhat clearer, and plays too fast as this recording did. There is a speed corrected version which was previously shared on DIME by "putuco" on 2008-11-25, but the speed was overcorrected and it plays slightly too slow.
NOTE: Due to the speed alteration of the files, the EAC log & cuesheet are no longer accurate in terms of track times and file CRCs, but this is not anything to worry about. The purpose of including the EAC log and cuesheet is to confirm that the tracks were indeed accurately ripped from the original CD bootleg.

01. [5:57] Everything Counts
02. [3:33] Now, This Is Fun
03. [4:49] Two Minute Warning
04. [4:13] Shame
05. [4:00] See You
06. [3:22] Get The Balance Right
07. [4:32] Love In Itself
08. [4:08] Big Muff
09. [4:58] The Landscape Is Changing
10. [4:36] And Then...
11. [4:21] Photographic
12. [4:42] Told You So
13. [4:15] New Life
14. [4:50] More Than A Party
15. [4:27] The Meaning Of Love
16. [4:57] Just Can't Get Enough
17. [3:19] Boys Say Go!
Total time: 1:14:56

Line up:

Martin Gore - keyboards, backing vocals
Alan Wilder - keyboards, backing vocals
Andrew Fletcher - keyboards, backing vocals

All songs written by Martin L. Gore, except for "Two Minute Warning" and "The Landscape is Changing" which were written by Alan Wilder and "Photographic", "New Life", "Just Can't Get Enough", and "Boys Say Go!" which were written by Vince Clarke.

Sound: Good FM broadcast.
OU Comments: The only issues I have to report are the occasional sound level dips and static thruoughout the recording. They are part of the FM broadcast, so they're here to stay. No big deal, though. You'll definitely know what they are when you hear them.
Lineage: CD-R obtained in trade years and years ago, verified lossless via Spectro.

drums: Peter Edward Clarke (aka Budgie)

OU: I think I have something really special to share with all [you], but first a bit of background. RLR has been a very active trader back in the early 80´s with very wide musical tastes: he could go from Kiss to Joni Mitchell; from Genesis to Deep Purple, Queen, Simple Minds, The Who, Springsteen and many more. In the part I could access his enormous collection to get many U2 tapes some of which I have been sharing with you folks.
RLR had all sorts of tapes in his collection, traded not long after the show happened so most of them are low generation, in particular tons of shows recorded in Italy which to me are some of the most interesting. Some of them, I had never seen circulating in the trading circuit. Unfortunately he did not care about generation so this info, except for the shows he
has as masters, is not available.
RLR has kindly given me access once again to his collection. It was like a "kid in a toy shop" situation: it was hard to select tapes and at the end I came home with some 250 tapes to listen and eventually to transfer in the digital domain. Some of them will be shared here, possibly the most interesting ones.
As a follow-up of the previous Siouxsie show in Milano, here is the 1984 appearance. By then the band was not a cult band playing small clubs but ready to play the bigger venues and the Teatro Tenda was the venue a band of a certain status used to play in town. The recording is very very good indeed, despite being a recording from nearly 30 years ago. To my point of view by 1985 the band stopped to be innovative and started to be a bit repetitive, so I guess this is somehow their peak. Enjoy! -ldb

Men Without Hats: Edmonton 1984 (Soundboard) FLAC

5. I Know Their Name
6. Messiahs Die Young
7. Ideas For Walls
8. Eurotheme

11. The Safety Dance
12. I Got the Message
13. Where Do the Boys Go?
14. Editions of You [Roxy Music cover]
15. Modern(e) Dancing (fast version)

Most of these have circulated in mp3 form, but I think that lossless versions are pretty scarce.
Regarding this recording - this is most certainly taken from the soundboard, and the overall sound quality is excellent. Unfortunately somebody has edited most of the crowd noise from between each song, and on a couple of tracks the last 1-2 seconds of music has also been lost. This is not a glitch, it is this way on my disc as well. Regardless, this is a great recording from the band's tour in support of their second album, "Folk of the '80s (Part III)".

The Joe Ely Band: Hollywood 1984 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

Copy of joe ely band-1984-06-22-outside front cover
Palace Theatre, Hollywood, California
June 22, 1984

Recorded by Mike Martin and Mario Mancilla
Source: 2 Sennheiser MKH404-tu microphones > Sony D5M (w/ Dolby) > 2 TDK MA-C90 Cassettes (Thanks go out to John Musgrave for loaning me his equipment again)
Transfer: Nakamichi CR3A (w/ Dolby) > Audigy 4 Pro @ 24-44.1 > Editing w/ NERO > Converted to 16-44.1 w/ Audacity > CD Wav > Flac (Level 8)

Quote of the show: “I like it because he’s not that young and he’s still angry”.
Audience comment during “Shakin’ Tonight”

There are low frequency issues from the BOOMY concert hall acoustics at our location.
To reduce the “BOOM” 6dB of attenuation was applied below 200 Hz. This revealed much more detail that had previously been hidden behind the kick drum and bass guitar.
Amplitude was then increased to compensate for the reduced low frequency.
The distortion muddies the sound in some places but not too bad. Applause sections were then modified by removing the loudest clapping one clap at a time. Someone in the crowd didn’t like to see me recording the show. He calls me a weirdo and keeps telling me to buy the record, like I have all of them already you idiot.
Well a few minutes later this guy comes by and yells “rock it rock it” directly into the microphones.
I tried to edit this out but couldn’t without creating an abrupt transition.
Just ended up reducing the volume by 12 dB in that section so not to scare the pee out of you. Here is the companion concert to the Club Lingerie show of the 23rd.
Someone commented that Joe Ely Band shows from 1984 were rare, so here is another one. Cover photo from concert courtesy Mario Mancilla.

-Nice audience tape that could use some EQ as it is quite bright. A New York crowd between the songs, but no real issues during the music.
-Tape flip between tracks 11 & 12 so missing a bit there.
-Help with songlist or verification needed for tracks 10-11. "National Education Week" seems re-arranged & possibly different lyrics with another song included. Incredible jams for 20 minutes & really too bad there's a cut in the middle, as it was possibly non-stop.

Recording Information ::: unknown stereo equipment -> master tape -> 1st generation cassette -> 2nd generation Maxell XLII-S 90 cassette, Dolby B on.

Playback 2011-08-04 ::: 2nd generation Maxell XLII-S 90 cassette on Nakamichi BX-300 cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth & pitch adjusted, heads cleaned & demagnatized -> Tascam CD-RW900SL pro CD recorder -> CD-RW -> computer, EAC secure -> wavs -> Audacity (fades &/or glitches, volume adjustments, no EQ) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> Trader's Little Helper -> yer ears. Audaity also included my first attempt at channel re-synching, as it was clear, from either heads mis-alignment or more likely the stereo spread from the microphone placement, that the channels were not lined up on the master. It seemed to help some. If there were Dolby issues that caused the brightness, it happened from the master to first, or when someone made my copy. I decoded with Dolby on as marked on the tape. First uploaded 2011-12-19.

Line-up: Natalie Merchant - lead Vocals // John Lombardo - rhythm guitars // Robert Buck - lead guitar, synthesizer, mandolin(?), accordian(?) // Steven Gustafson - bass // Dennis Drew: organ, piano // Jerome Augustyniak - drums

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

CoolSonics 081 ::: Thanks to the original taper & traders! ::: Corrections welcome ::: Many more people would enjoy this than realise it. The spontaneity & magic that seemed to disappear into the void with fame is still happening here. Going to see that band with less than 80 people in the audience at the original half-size Iron Horse, with Natalie sketching & singing at the same time on stage & lost in her own world was something to behold. Someone could really work magic with some professional EQ on this recording. Some bass added & the high-end brought down & it would be a really fine recording. It seems a more intense performance than the London show that circulates from around the same time.
Do whatever you want with it except sell it, 'cause that ain't cool!

Bob Dylan: Los Angeles Rehearsals 1984 (Soundboard) FLAC

featuring Mick Taylor
LA_Rehearsals_2
a shot during the session
Beverley Theatre, Los Angeles, California - 23 May 1984
Rehearsal
Shortly before the full tape of this rehearsal emerged, this tape circulated.

Length 63 minutes (PA studio recording). I think this tape is slightly better quality than my full tape (approximately 20 minutes longer). It's unclear why this incomplete tape emerged, although as the instrumentals are missing one could guess that someone was 'cleaning up' the session a bit. However as some songs are totally missing (Thin Man, Girl From the North Country, Almost done, Highway 61 revisited) and the three false starts are still included that seems like a poor guess. Anyway this is the rehearsal as it first appeared.

Source my Tape -> Tascam102 -> cooledit pro (normalisation, cuts, edits, fades) -> traders little helper.

1 Maggies Farm
2 All Along the Watchtower
3 Just Like A Woman (with a false start)
4 When You Gonna Wake Up? (with a false start)
5 Shelter From the Storm
6 Watered Down Love
7 Masters Of War
8 Jokerman
9 Simple Twist of Fate I
10 Simple Twist of Fate II
11 Man of Peace (with a false start)
12 I And I
13 Heart of Mine
14 Around and Around (?)
15 Leopard-skin Pill-box hat
16 It's all over now, Baby Blue
17 Always on my Mind
18 Every Grain of Sand

Bob Dylan
Mick Taylor (guitar)
Ian MacLagan (keyboards)
Gregg Sutton (bass)
Colin Allen (drums)

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Quebec 1984 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

19840721_front
DATE: 1984-07-21
LOCATION: The Forum, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
CD-R --> EAC(Secure)-->.wav files--> Traders Little Helper (level 8, align on sector boundaries)-->.flac files
This upload will include EAC log files, .md5 verification file, spectral/frequency analysis, and PAR2 recovery files.
Audience tape - first time Do You Love Me is segued into Twist and Shout.

OU: This one definitely has better sound than others circulating. This CDr upload has a few minor issues though....My notes:
D1, tracks 9 & 10 - poor track transitions.
D2, tracks 3 & 4, 11 & 12 - poor track transitions.
D2, Backstreets split over two tracks, 11 & 12.
D3, track 2, start slightly cut & dropout @ 0:34

This can easily be fixed, but I didn't bother. Good show, pretty good sound for a mid eighties show.
