OU Notes: 1st gen from the JEMS vaults. Listenable but rough sounding recording, the performance is quite good though so it is worth a listen for that reason alone. This should be an upgrade to most known copies of this recording and this particular tape has never been properly digitized in any form prior to Dec. 2010.
"It took hours of phone calls (back when long distance was expensive!) to get this one. Features a great version of 'Young Man Blues'"

The Upgrade of Four Famous Zabriskie Point Out Takes - Nov./ Dec. 1969

OU: Here are the most celebrated four famous Zabriskie Point out takes in the best sound quality I ever heard. This is another product of my wide research about Zabriskie Point.
1 to 4: Pops Fixed and Speed Corrected (by }{eywood)
5 & 6: Untouched Files (by Grolsh)

1. Oenone PF&SC
2. Fingal's Cave PF&SC
3. Crumbling Land (extended version) PF&SC
4. Rain in the Country PF&SC
5. Oenone - Fingal's Cave - Crumbling Land (extended version) UF
6. Rain in the Country UF

OU: I have to thank Grolsh for this. He got his tape in the early 80's. He sent me some tapes to help the making of In Rainbow Light - The Box. In the packet was a Surprise CD as well with the ZP out takes (and more...). As you can hear from the Untouched version there are a few pops and tchs coming probably from a fresh LP.
Even the SQ is clearly good, the two tracks have the same problems of hiss and distortion we are used to know from Omayyad LPs.
Grolsh did try to find a better copy of this for many years without success. I and Grolsh thought was nice to share all this with you all. I thought also was nice to hear the songs de-popsed, speed corrected and without NR so I edited the two tracks and I gave them to }{eywood for the processes. He as usually was fast to make a good work.
It's a good upgrade and with a further elaboration by }{eywood it will generate an Omayyad Rev. A. I hope anyway it's only a step to the Holy Grail of the Zabriskie Point sessions. I'm talking about the copy of the master Don Hall took from MGM vaults in 1970.
Enjoy

Thanks to:
- Grolsh for the Surprise
- }{eywood for the work on the original tracks
- Don Hall for taking these pearls from MGM

mr_mags notes from orig.seed info: I did a basic transfer of a cassette years ago & have been hoping that a proper/better transfer would pop up on dime. Well... it's been 4 years now & thought I would put this one out there. It generally sounds excellent/low gen but regarding azimuth, speed, pitch- I dunno. The speed seems like it may be off? Also, note that D1-T6 & T7 are incomplete.
FYI... a quick Google reminded me that there are clips from this concert on the Miles Ahead DVD.
add. flambay notes:
This SBD sounds excellent indeed.
I thought some would like to hear this running closer to correct speed.

Johnny Winters with Edgar Winters: Los Angeles 1970 (VG- Aud) FLAC

March 7, 1970

Master: 1 Sennheiser 805 shotgun microphone > Uher 4000 1/2 track R2R Recorder @ 7 1/2 ips on 5" 3M Scotch tapes (mono)
My Copy: 1/2 track 5" Masters > Revox B-77 (w/ Dolby) > Sony DTC-690 @ 16/32
2010 Transfer: Sony DTC-690 > Audigy 4 Pro (via Toslink) > Audacity > CD Wav > Flac (Level 8)

A good mono audience recording with some distortion on the master

01. Mean Town Blues (2 radical volume changes removed by deleting a couple Seconds at 00:37)
02. Mama Talk To Your Daughter
03. Mean Mistreater (Tape Flip spliced AT 24:45)
04. Johnny B. Goode
05. Tobacco Road (Tape Flip spliced AT 50:29) >
06. Drum Solo (Tape Flip spliced AT 53:09-my tape flip which was overlapped so this is seemless) >
07. Frankenstein
08. Tell The Truth
[69:49]

Johnny Winters-Guitar and Vocals
Edgar Winters-Keyboard, Sax and Vocals

Here is another recording from the TMOQ vaults.
Master 5" reel to reel tapes copied to my Revox B-77 in the 1980's and transferred to DAT in the 1990's. The editing is only tiny snips to remove those nasty dropouts and to splice the tape flips.
Five inch reels need flipping every 22 minutes.
Tried to make the splices as seemless as possible.
Distorted in the beginning seconds of the first song but gets better.
About what you would expect from an early 1970's audience recording but with very little hiss.
No equalization or noise reduction (except the Dolby B).

"There’ll Never Be Another You" (Weir)

Program Notes: Singer-songwriter Willie Nelson was born April 30, 1933, in the small farming community of Abbott, Texas. His early interest in music came about through singing in church, and he wrote his first song at age 7. By age 9, he'd begun playing in a local band; after high school, Nelson served briefly in the Air Force and studied at Baylor University. In the mid-'50s, he worked as a disc jockey in Texas and Washington state, played in honky-tonks and continued to write songs.
In 1960, he moved to Nashville, where he was signed to a publishing contract with Pamper Music. His song "Night Life" was a hit for Ray Price, and Nelson had a run of hits for other artists: "Hello Walls," "Funny How Time Slips Away" and "Crazy," one of the greatest country hits of all time for Patsy Cline.
In spite of his songwriting successes, Nelson's own singing career failed to catch fire in Nashville. He released a string of albums with middling chart success in the mid-'60s and early '70s, and had all but retired from music when he relocated to Austin. It was there that his unique take on country mingled with the burgeoning counterculture, and outlaw country was born. The music was characterized by a raw, rock-infused approach, in contrast to the studio polish of the Nashville sound.

Becoming The 'Red-Headed Stranger'
Nelson had a string of his own hits throughout the '70s, sometimes with fellow outlaw Waylon Jennings, also a Texas native and one-time sideman to Buddy Holly. In 1975, Nelson began an unusual association with Columbia Records that granted him total creative control. Columbia's gamble paid off, and Nelson's first album in the partnership, the stripped-down concept album Red-Headed Stranger, yielded the No. 1 single "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain." His 1978 album Stardust stayed on the country charts for 10 years. In 1982, Always on My Mind won the Country Music Association's Album of the Year award, and its title song won Single of the Year. He also won five Grammys for his recordings of "Always on My Mind," "On the Road Again," "Georgia on My Mind," "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" (with Jennings) and "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain." Nelson has been nominated for 43 Country Music Association awards and won nine of them, including 1979's prize for Entertainer of the Year.
In 2009, Nelson returned to his Texas roots on Willie and the Wheel, recorded with the band Asleep at the Wheel. The album features a set of traditional country and Western swing tunes, as recorded by bands such as Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.
Nelson has been politically active on a national level since 1985, when he co-founded the Farm Aid music festival with Neil Young and John Mellencamp to raise awareness of the financial plight of family farms. He has also been an outspoken voice for the legalization of marijuana.

Nelson's Way To Jazz
Fellow Texan and guitarist Jackie King has backed a number of music legends, including Bill Evans, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Jerry Garcia and Stevie Ray Vaughan. King got together with Nelson in 1984 to record a jazz album, Angel Eyes, and since 1999, King has been a permanent member of Nelson's band, The Family.
On this episode of Piano Jazz, Nelson performs with guitarist King and host Marian McPartland, along with bassist Gary Mazzaroppi. The session includes a set of Nelson's own tunes — "Crazy," "Rainy Day Blues," "The Great Divide" — and some of his favorite standards, including "Stardust," "All of Me" and "There'll Never Be Another You."
"I had never met [Nelson] when he appeared on the program," McPartland says. "But Jackie [King] and he got into such a fine session, when it was over he didn't want to leave. He asked me to perform as his surprise guest that night at Irving Plaza, where we did several duets. The crowd must have been astonished when he introduced me rather than a cowboy."

Originally recorded July 23, 2001. Originally broadcast Feb. 12, 2002.

I received this one from a trade last week and in my opinion it's really good, one of the best Clapton bootleg I've been able to listen to. The sound quality and the performance are both very good.
Not a standard Clapton' crowd because it happened in Monaco, there was a dinner before the gig and the price for one ticket was about 200 euros!!!
Enjoy!!!

I am curious about your thoughts on this

question1

I am considering posting an audio rip of a DVD that was officially released. This DVD was officially released for a VERY limited time AND in a limited market area.
The DVD was recorded (again officially) before the band's first album release and includes unfinished versions of songs and solos never replicated.
It has been out of print for over 25 years.
The band no longer exists and an audio CD of the concert has never been released.
It is a great concert.
I won't name names but almost everybody will recognize the name instantly.
Should I post it?

JT: "This is gonna be a very loose set, I think." Johnny starts things up in the (very temporary) absence of Walter and Jerry and things don't let up from there.
A great show, featuring some "new" 1981-vintage songs.
Reasonable SQ and recoded a few feet from the stage - a small complement to the SKOTF series (this show is not in the archive).

Neil Young’s extensive tour with Crazy Horse in 1976 comes after the release of On The Beach in 1974 and two albums, Tonight’s The Night and Zuma, the following year. These two together represented an interest by Young in resurrecting his collaboration with Crazy Horse. The former was actually recorded several years before and the latter, releases six months afterwards in December 10th 1975 represents, in the view of many, the pinnacle of Young’s recorded output with the band. The first live appearances with the new Crazy Horse with Frank (Poncho) Sampedro replacing the deceased Dan Whitten consist of four shows in ten days in little clubs and bars in northern California, dubbed the “Rolling Zuma Revue.” An extensive world tour was booked, called “The Year Of The Horse,” beginning on March 3rd, 1976 in Nagoya.
This was Young’s first visit to Japan and he played seven shows in Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Tokyo. All of the shows have been taped and many pressed. The most recent releases include Another Osaka (Screamer), which contains half of the March 4th show, and GFK (Watch Tower) containing the Fukuoka tape. Wet Show, one of two recent Neil Young releases on the Tarantura label, contains a brand new complete audience recording. An older excellent audience recording exists and was released several years ago on You Are Just A Dream (F*!#in’ Up FUPCD-2001/2002), but is missing the second encore “Cortez The Killer.” Wet Show legitimately has the second encore and for the first time this show is complete.
The sound quality is simply stunning. It is a three dimensional stereo audience recording taped right in front of the stage. The balance between the instruments and audience is perfect, and is detailed enough to pick up Young’s off-mic comments. The first disc is devoted to the thirty minute acoustic set. It is fascinating to hear Young bounce around from acoustic guitar, banjo, and piano as he plays the hits. After the opener “Tell Me Why” Young clicks his harp in the holder and says “It’s nice to be here in Japan. I’m very happy to be here in this country to play music for you. I won’t talk much since you can’t understand me” as he tunes the banjo for “Mellow My Mind.” “After The Goldrush,” with Young at the piano, follows. He follows with “Too Far Gone.” This is the first time it was performed in public and would be played in all but two shows on the world tour and wouldn’t receive its official release until 1989 on Freedom. He seems self conscious afterwards about the words.
But he introduces the next song as ‘Work Can Break Your Body, But Only Love Can Break Your Heart.” He returns to the piano for “A Man Needs A Maid” which he introduces as, “This song is called…Yamaha!” pointing to the piano. The Yamaha reference will be a running joke through the second half of the show too. Before the final song of the first half Young says, “I’ll play a little tune here, and then I’m gonna go away for a while. And then I’m gonna come back and I’ll bring my friends Crazy Horse with me.” After banging the harmonica to empty it of spit he says, “It’s a wet show ladies and gentlemen. I’m very happy to see McDonald’s hamburgers here I think that’s wonderful. This is called ‘Burger Of Gold.’”
It is typical for Young to be chatty during the acoustic set. Some of his comments betray a vulnerability that is its charm. In the electric set he and Crazy Horse approach with a gravity that is focused solely upon the music. “Country Home,” unreleased at this point and would not be issued officially until 1990’s Ragged Glory, opens the second set. This song would open the electric set for every Neil Young and Crazy Horse show in 1976 except one (November 14 in Madison, Wisconsin where “Cowgirl In The Sand” was played and can be heard on Madison Hurricane on Seymour). Only three songs, “Don’t Cry No Tears,” “Drive Back,” and “Cortez The Killer” are played from the new album. “Down By The River” is featured and this version lasts nine minutes, far from the fifteen-minute extravaganza from the early Crazy Horse tours. “Like A Hurricane,” which wouldn’t be released until the following year’s American Stars N Bars, is introduced as a “new song.”
Afterwards Young gives a long intro for the next song, “‘The Losing End.’ Let me tell you a story about something that happened to me on my way into town today. I was walking down the street and some guy came up to me…oh I forgot. I’ll sing about it. It’s very good to be here, we’re having a good time.” The set closer is “Southern Man” followed by “Cinnamon Girl” and, after a minute of clapping and two small cuts in the tape, an excellent version of “Cortez The Killer.” Nagoya is a good show for a tour opener and Tarantura use one of the best sounding audience recordings available for Neil Young. Wet Show is limited to one hundred unnumbered copies and is packaged in a cardboard gatefold sleeve. This title proved so popular that is sold out and Tarantura issued a second edition. The cover art is different to differentiate the two, with the second edition having the white boarder and the ”Original Mister Peach Recording” on the top. This edition is also limited to one hundred unnumbered copies.

Review: This Japanese CD combines two excellent quality, superbly mixed soundboard recordings from the Feb.11, 1974 early and late shows, and includes tracks performed by The Band as well. The performance, while fairly standard for 1974 in terms of the setlist, is excellent in execution. A surprisingly enjoyable set and, as with Paint The Daytime Black, a far better representation of 1974 than the official Before The Flood album.

Recorded by: Allen Tarzwell and Mike Martin
Source: Unknown microphone > Sony TC50 > TDK Audia C-90
(Auto record level mono portable handheld cassette deck with external microphone).
Transfer of master: Nakamichi CR3A > Audigy 4 Pro @ 24/44.1 > editing with Audacity > Dithered to 16 Bits with Audacity > Tracked with CD Wav > Flac (level8)
Editing includes volume adjustments and also trimming the beginning and end of the tape, smoothing out the tape flip and the multiple recording breaks (pauses).
Audacity wave editor was also used to removed some of the loudest “up close” clapping one clap at a time.
The Encore was one of the best “Like A Rolling Stone” performances and unexpectedly up to the microphone walks Neil Young.
Neil was recovering from throat surgery and did not sound real good. At one point Randy gestured towards Neil asking him not to sing and even gives him a little push back from the microphone. The crowd was a little stunned and so was Neil.
Ed immediately jumped up from behind the drums and arms around Neil and Randy brought both to stage front where Ed joined in on the chorus.
Ed’s quick whit distracted everyone from the awkward moment and saved the day for all.

OU Credit: Originally seeded at gdlive.com by: John "Jay" Serafin, owner/audio engineer @ Serafin Station Studio B

Notes from initial source:
Aw hell, just get up and dance! This is what the B-52s are all about! The engineers who made this master were using multiple professional studio cassette decks running at twice the usual speed (7.5 i.p.s.), so the initial hiss was minimal to begin with. Just a very slight "tweak" with the editing software, and the result: the hiss is almost inaudible (-62 dB), and the music was not affected by the noise reduction.
It's great to hear artists and groups who really like to have the "REAL" sound to their equipment. Between songs, you hear the typical Fender "buzz" coming from the amps, which disappears once the music starts. The energy level has in the ozone, the vocals were on the money (although I have to admit I HATE the "screech" during Rock Lobster... reminds me of Donna Jean on a REAL bad day! Dont flame me...), the mix is a little on the mono side, but nonetheless, it's great from start to finish. My master didn't have the final song on it at all, and the first song, "Party", was edited out, due to diginoise. I haven't been able to find another copy of this show as clean as the copy I has, and it would be unfair to try to "match" two different versions. And rather than cut the song altogether, I chose to leave the clean part intact, and work from there.
If you love "Dance Music" in the strict sense, the B-52s knew how to do it right. Even on their "slower" songs, they had the ability to make people want to get out of their seats and onto the dance floor. If you're ever in a doldrum mood, give this show a listen to. I think it will snap you out of it.
Most of the "smaller" acts had less stage time, with Peter Tosh, Weir, and the Dead having the bulk of the stage time. The Fest went on much longer than planned, ending up somewhere around 3 AM rather than the planned midnight end. But because the crowd was very cool overall, there wasn't any real hassles from the authorities about shutting the show down on time. It just went on and on.
Pass this show around to others.
