I've never heard of "the cage" except for this one and only concert. I was first told years ago it's a a small theater, actually it's a basketball court (home of Umass Minutemen before they built the Mullins Center in the early 90's) so the acoustics aren't very good, but this sounds pretty good considering that. I first got a very inferior quality tape of this concert before getting this one, and this is the 1st time I've seeded it. If you haven't heard this and you like Jeff Beck at all, you will enjoy this. It burns! I believe it is the whole concert except for just a few seconds of track 8 for a quick tape flip. There was time for a clean flip but the taper got caught napping for a moment. The 1st 51 seconds are
overmodulated in the original recording, but not in this one. Once the levels get set right the rest of it is consistent and quite good. Sounds like the taper was fairly close to the stage and not too far over to either side of it. Not sure what was used to record it, but the mics sound like they're decent ones (not great). The fidelity is not the greatest, but enough to appreciate a very fine show from Jeff and Simon Phillips especially. It's better than you'd get with a Sony 310 and the built in mikes. The guitar and drum playing is very strong. Hymas was good too, and Beck and Phillips had a great night in Western Mass. thanks to fzmoi69 for making this fine Beck recording.

OU: Apologies for not knowing the setlist 100%. The quality is great,one of the best J.B. shows I've ever heard. Recorded in a Arena, so it has that 'huge' Arena sound, but still great quality thanks to the Nak 300's. Not very widely circulated. Some drop-outs at the beginning due to the mini plug adapter, I didn't mess with it.

The second coming of the Jeff Beck Group recorded at Turku, Helsinki, Finland in the course of a small European tour before the release of the album Rough And Ready. Sincerely I'm not too keen of Bob Tench vocals but the instrumental parts are top quality.
Four tracks of this show appeared on Rough And Ready and the other, I Got Have A Song, would be edited on the group's 1972 record just simply called Jeff Beck Group.

Flying High Helsinki 1971 (Empress Valley Supreme Disc EVSD 51)

After losing Ron Wood and Rod Stewart to The Faces, Jeff Beck assembled a new incarnation of the Jeff Beck Group in 1971 which included Max Middleton on keys, Cozy Powell on drums, Clive Chaman on bass, and Bob Tench on vocals. This new line up featured more of a jazz and R&B sound than the first incarnation and can be attributed to Middleton’s keyboard style and Tench’s soulful vocals. The recording claims to come from a pre-FM source and while you can never really be sure; this show was definitely professionally recorded and is in stereo. It’s a very compact, being only 40 minutes, high energy “balls to the wall” performance. The guitars and bass are very heavy sounding and the bands performance is aggressive. All tracks come from the only two albums this line up recorded, neither of which had been released at this point. Rough And Ready would be released in October 1971 and Jeff Beck Group in April 1972. Right from the start the band is on fire with “New Ways Train Train” and the bass is low in the mix for the first 30 seconds. “I Got To Have A Song” starts with a great funky jam between Beck and Middleton before the others join in. Things slow down only slightly for “I’ve Been Used” but quickly pick up again for “Situation”. “Jody” is 14 minutes with a short drum break and includes “Ice Cream Cakes” not listed on the back cover. The band is heard tuning up as the tape cuts out so we can assume maybe more was played. Flying High is an older Empress Valley title and is packaged in a heavy cardboard sleeve with a great aerial shot of the band on stage. This is a must have for Jeff Beck collectors. The playing is outstanding with sound quality to match and the only downfall is that the tape is so short.

Another great performance at the MGM-Foxwoods by the venerable axeman Jeff Beck. With a revamped band from his last visit here, he wasted no time in covering much of the material from his latest album. A solid performance from start to finish. Fritz Sennheiser once spoke of Jeff's guitar style as “Er ist sehr gut “* and I would have to agree.
Fritz Sennheiser, the founder and longtime chairman of Sennheiser Electronic, a leading maker of high-end audio equipment like microphones, headphones and infrared listening systems, died on May 17 at his home in Wedemark, Germany. He was 98.
Here's to you Fritz, thanks for the mic's.
(*-in the interest of full disclosure, I have no idea if he actually said this about Mr. Beck directly but I'm sure in his life time, he probably did utter these words).

+ Dave (2.0) then reconverted to wav via TLH > Adobe Audition 3.0 (build 7283.0) Restoration/Hiss Removal using the following settings: FFT 8192/Precision Factor 20/Transition Width 7/Spectral Decay Rate 60%/ Noise Floor automatically generated, moved to -17.5db, then meticulously hand adjusted (30 point)/hiss (ad I mean ONLY hiss*) reduced 35db/ normalized to -1db --> saved as 16-bit/44.1 KHz wav files

+ I performed this reduction as a labor of love as its destination was my best friend. I spent well over 20 minutes per track fine tuning each and every aspect of the noise floor so that there was not the tiniest iota of musical signal left (only noise) as heard through AKG K702 headphones at high volume levels (see "Cleaned by Dave" jpg). I still think that I am hearing the surf ;)
You can trust me on this one. This is not a hack job hiss reduction. The musical waveform remained completely untouched!!!
No EQ'ing.

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.
He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.
Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.
Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.
Always remember - the more generous you are with your music, the more it comes back to you.

Jeff Beck Group: BBC Sessions 1967 – 1968 FLAC

OU Notes: I've made a start (using Audacity) at pitch correction and volume/EQ normalization for the various sources below. Of note is that not all songs from each session are from the same recording, and I'm not sure I've caught all the subtleties. However, there is no way the sound quality is all VG to EX; the best are VG, the worst are G or slightly less.
Here's the original description, with the track numbers 5 & 6 reversed (by me).

Some are from the original radio broadcasts while others are from Transcription LP’s. A few of the tracks repeat when they are featured from radio broadcast and transcription LP. Quality in the main is Excellent with a few tracks a little bellow but never falling bellow EX- or VG/EX.
All sessions have recording dates and broadcast dates and all tracks are unreleased officially. Full artwork included.
This is a really nice collection and a must for any fan of the early Jeff Beck Group.
