Frank Zappa and the MoI: Phoenix 1974 (Soundboard) FLAC

frankzappaphoenixjuly17
July 17th, 1974
Celebrity Theatre
Phoenix, AZ

Anybody interested in solid-sounding soundboards from the 1974 band? I thought so...

Like most of the shows from the first American leg of this tour (and the third American leg of 1974), this is a very loose, relaxed show, with plenty of quotes in Dupree's Paradise.
Despite the hissiness of this tape, it's clearly the best of four tapes sampled - so enjoy this immense Zappateer co-production, won't you?
Available Recordings, according to FZShows:
83 min, SBD, B+

Source: 82:28 (after speed correction and patching), B+ (B for BF patch, B/B- for WIU2B-LudzNL patch)
Lineage: SBD > Unknown Gen Maxell XLII 90min tape > Kenwood KX-W8020 Cassette Deck > Sound Blaster Awe32 PC Soundcard > Recorded To WAV With Cool Edit Pro > mailed across the Mason-Dixon line to ZP > Wavelab (speed correction as per flambay) > CDWAV (tracks split, saved as FLAC level 8 ) > foobar2000 (tags + ReplayGain)
Additional lineage for RDNZL: GoldWave (patched with flambay's assistance) > foobar2000 (tags + ReplayGain)
Additional lineage for Dupree's Paradise: GoldWave (patched without flambay's assistance, look what I did all by myself Mommy) > foobar2000 (tags + ReplayGain)
Taped by: N/A
Transferred by: jaypfunk
Speed corrected by: flambay
Edited by: Zappa Penguin
(RDNZL patch transferred by BengoFury, edited by flambay, cut-and-pasted by ZP)
(Dupree's Paradise patch transferred by WIU2B, mailed by LudzNL, cut-and-pasted by ZP)

The MOI:
Napolean Murphy Brock - saxophone, flute, vocals
George Duke - keyboards, synthesizer, vocals
Tom Fowler - bass
Chester Thompson - drums, vocals
Ruth Underwood - percussion
Frank Zappa - guitar, vocals

01. intro (soundcheck and tuning)
02. RDNZL (mystery wonder-gap at 0:37-38, patched with BF version, no music missing)
03. Village of the Sun
04. Echidna's Arf (of You)
05. Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?
06. Cosmik Debris
07. Dupree's Paradise (tape flip at 7:54 - patched with WIU2B-LudzNL version from 7:54 - 8:12, part of monologue still missing)
08. Camarillo Brillo
09. T'Mershi Duween
10. Dog Breath
11. Uncle Meat
12. tuning
13. Road Ladies

OU Notes: RDNZL patch is cross-faded, Dupree's isn't. A non-cross-faded version of RDNZL is available in the bonus folder, as well as the original Dupree's Paradise fill material.
Speed correction info:
intro -> tuning: +60 cts
Road Ladies: +55 cts
Do not encode to MP3, do not sell, do not buy, trade only as .FLAC, do not throw things on the stage, tip your waitress.

ORIGINAL Offer Notes:
1 - I originally was going to offer the best version of this recording. I have always preferred my "non-boot" (from analog tape), as the best recording from this show.
2 - Then I was going to edit in & out different items to make this as complete as possible, but then I'd be hacking up & including little bits & pieces. So finally I decided to just offer both versions.
3 - Items of difference that I know of & that I have found:
.... "Denim & A Strat" has removed the DJ banter between some songs.
.... "Denim & A Strat" has a fade & a cut at the beginning of "A Million Miles A Away" track.
.... "Denim & A Strat" has more "Thank you's" & more tuning up at the beginning of "Bullfrog Blues" track.
.... more differences? Can anyone add more?
4 - In the past this also traded as a couple different dates, which you may have. Those being: August 1974 & September 3, 1974.

WBCN studios, afternoon of 24th April 1974
6. More Fool Me (conclusion)
7. Interview with Mike & Phil

The Show This evening's performance in the middle of the 2nd American Selling England tour was frustrating and brilliant at the same time. The equipment problems that plagued this tour were particularly bad this night, and at times you can hear Gabriel and Collins losing some of their usual tolerance in the face of continual microphone problems. Gabriel comments at one point that "we'll go professional next week", and Collins; "I bet you wish you'd gone to the pictures". The intro to 'I Know What I Like' is aborted at one point. Never-the-less, this is a great musical performance, and one of the better recordings of a show from this tour. Firth of Fifth is given a particularly emotive performance, and Phil varies some of his vocal lines in More Fool Me nicely.
There is also an interview with Mike and Phil, including the end of their performance in the studio of 'More Fool Me', which was broadcast on Boston's WBCN radio, and which seems to be previously unknown.
The Recording
This recording has been remastered from Steve Hopkins' transcription of his master tape, which he generously sent me. The recording was made on a Sony TC-55 with built in condenser microphone. The tape was transferred using a Nakamichi DR-2 cassette deck to Sony TCD-60ES DAT recorder at 44.1KHz with Super Bit Mapping (which really improves the clarity of the sound), before being transferred to CD. The recording is mono, but clear and with significant detail. The only limitation with this tape is that it does not represent the entire show, as The Battle of Epping Forest, and possibly Horizons (if they performed it this evening) are missing. There are also a few minor edits in the recording, and one of these may have omitted Phil's one-handed drum solo, which one is tempted to think they must have performed given the amount of technical difficulties. This recording has been widely in circulation, most commonly through the Highland disc 'More Fool Me'. I don't have a copy of this, but my impression is that while it is a complete transcription sourced from a low generation tape, it is very bright in the upper midrange, and lacking in richness in the bass. The master tape by contrast, is more balanced overall, and with a rich bass presence. The afternoon before the show, Phil and Mike came into Boston's WCBN studios, performed 'More Fool Me' and gave a short interview. This interview has not been previously in circulation, but Steve had a recording of it, unfortunately missing all but the last 50 secs or so of 'More Fool Me'. But at least it exists and is included in this release.
The Remaster
I took only one channel of Steve's transcription, so as to optimize for mono. I denoised the recording minimally, mostly just to sharpen up the treble a little. EQ balance was pretty good, although I attenuated the lower midrange a little around 200Hz to compensate for a slight boxiness in the microphone. I have made a few small crossfade edits at points where the tape was turned on and off during some of the technical hold ups in the show to provide a little more continuity. I cannot pick the point at which Epping Forest is missing from the recording, I assume it must have been played, especially as Phil and Mike comment in the interview about the show running nearly two hours - this recording comes in at just over 90 mins. There are also a few squeaky noises on the master recording, which may come from the cassette recorder, or even the seating at the venue. These sounds were quite distracting, so I have removed them. There was a very noticeable one at the beginning of Tony's piano intro to Firth of Fifth, and others in the opening section of Musical Box.

A Work In Progress….
Music collectors might expect that all recordings from 1970's Pink Floyd have been found, traded and distributed but here we are in the 21st century and new little treasures are still popping up. Take for example this recording. The source for this remaster project has been dubbed source number 4 for the Pink Floyd November 15th, 1974 concert. It was released by Rover Records under the title How Time Flies. Once torrented on the Dimeadozen website, a spirited discussion occurred regarding its characteristics and quality, compared to other sources. We agree that it is the best quality source of that night's event but felt that work needed to be done to improve the listening experience. Below, with permission, we present the lengthy and well thought out description of this recording….
I think it's best to address the issue of How Time Flies originally being announced as the November 14th, 1974 concert at Wembley - this is also the date printed on the cover. What we have here is in fact the concert from the following evening, November 15th, 1974. It's pretty clear that this was nothing more than an honest, albeit tragic mistake and not an attempt to rip anyone off. That being said, some enthusiasts feel that the performance of the 15th is actually superior to that of its infamous successor. Previously, there have been versions of this show that have circulated both incomplete and intact. The first source was used for the majority of past releases including the incomplete Money on Flashback (FB0133), the often copied (and complete) Black Holes In The Sky first from Great Dane (GDR CD 9101) and later speed corrected by Harvested (HRV CDR 022), as well as the surprisingly good We Are From Planet Earth (STTP 184/185) from the often spotty Shout To The Top label. A second, inferior source was used for Akashic's Electric Magic (AKA-26) with slightly better versions of this source circulating via trader circles afterwards, and then in 2004 a mysterious, incomplete soundboard recording surfaced of this show offering a third, albeit odd perspective of this show (being that it was primarily drum and bass tracks) represented on silver via disc 2 of Siréne's Absolutely Years (Siréne-119).
The tape begins midway through Roger Waters' introduction of 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' indicating that it is a new song. (PRRP: we have repaired this introduction, in this release). What follows is a lengthy solo synthesizer introduction from Richard Wright that foreshadows his work on the Wish You Were Here and Animals albums, coming across as celestial, in an almost Kitaro-esque way. This introduction is unique to the shows from this year as it evolved into the shorter, more familiar chord sequence and clear melody by the time of the first shows in April of 1975. There's a small amount of microphone noise as the taper gets settled (PRRP: much of which is now minimized), but it is brief and doesn't affect the enjoyment of this developing epic whatsoever. There's also a really strange bit at 1:42 that sounds like some acoustic guitars being strummed and “Pictish” ranting - an anomaly present on ALL sources, so apparently this came from the stage. The introduction continues at length until the vocals finally enter at the 8:27 mark, and things start sounding more familiar. Although the song was still relatively new, it is probably the most developed of the newer songs, and despite being played as a complete suite (instead of in halves as it would be from 1975 onward), it is the closest to its final form of the new material. After 1974, the band would never play 'Shine On' as a complete piece again, so that contributes to the value of tapes such as this.
Floyd surely recognised the benefits of developing new material in a live setting after the tremendous success of Dark Side Of The Moon. Any musician can understand the value of gauging both audience reaction and the overall flow of new songs onstage, but the band clearly jumped the gun on 'Raving And Drooling' and 'You Gotta Be Crazy' during the French tour earlier in 1974. These songs started to gel more throughout the winter tour, but are still somewhat embryonic during this performance and at times bearing only a passing resemblance to the final versions heard in 1977.
'Raving And Drooling I Fell On His Neck With A Scream' (as introduced by Waters) begins with a truly bizarre taped recording that actually is some chap (Jimmy Young) raving and drooling nonsensically! Apart from that, the song itself has evolved to be fairly close to the much later version everyone knows from Animals. The bridge section about 10 minutes into the song features some interesting volume swells/feedback unique to this era, and there's no 23rd Psalm recitation.
The audience is apparently a bit impatient as the band tunes up before 'You Gotta Be Crazy' and Roger responds by saying “We're going as fast as we can”. While one person in the audience tells Roger, “We're from planet Earth”, another shouts “1967” to which Waters retorts, “1967 no, you're wrong this is 1974! And this is another new tune especially for YOU. And it's called You Gotta Be Crazy”. Which of these two people he was addressing with this last comment, we will never know. The song itself is more “together” than it was during the French tour earlier in the year, but is still the least complete in relation to its finalised version from the Animals era. Vocally it comes across more melodically than on other nights, but the lyrics are delivered in a rapid-fire fashion making it difficult to discern what Gilmour is singing. Fortunately, the lyrics were printed in the tour programs for the audience. There are some interesting passages after the 2nd verse with Gilmour vocalizing in the style of 'Atom Heart Mother' prior to the 3rd verse, and a rather lengthy instrumental section after it.
The sound quality seems to improve slightly for the Dark Side Of The Moon set and it is a fairly standard post-album release performance. The band sounds more confident and enthusiastic and the audience erupts with rapturous applause from start to finish. Gilmour delivers fantastic solos in 'Money' and 'Time,' while 'On The Run' has something of a Bladerunner vibe this evening. It should also be noted that backing vocals sound absolutely fantastic throughout the suite - especially on 'The Great Gig In The Sky.' The critics may have bashed the Wembley gigs, but the crowd responds with absolutely thunderous approval at the conclusion of 'Eclipse'. They knew that Dark Side Of The Moon was well on its way to becoming an epic masterpiece. But in 1974, the audience had no way of knowing of the greatness that was to come from the material presented in the first set and that it was still ….. a work in progress.

Notes from the Re-Master
As noted above, we began with the How Time Flies source recording for this remaster project. This recording had great clarity suggesting that the taper was in a good position within the venue. Unfortunately, numerous microphone bumps and other recording noises were found but most were repaired or minimized. Both the sub-bass and treble were excessive in sections and so both were attenuated to balance the tonality. Many segmental channel volume drops were found which lead to imbalances. These may have been produced by microphone movement or obscuring the mics from time to time. These were also corrected. A distinct speed error was found, particularly during the first set material suggesting that the tapes themselves rather than the recorder were to blame. Only a minor degree of speed correction was needed for the Dark Side Of The Moon material. Dynamics were adjusted to make volumes more consistent throughout the show. Re-tracking was necessary to conform to standard references. We chose to keep Shine On You Crazy Diamond as a single track because, at this stage in development, this song is one full song, not the two parts that it later becomes on the subsequent album. As a result of remastering, we can now hear the audience member who yells, “We are from planet Earth”. This is an important moment since it causes Roger Waters to respond humorously before beginning the next song.

Mountain: Wichita 1974 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

Moutain - 1971 (4)
"Wichita Lineman"
Wichita, KS
March 25, 1971
Audience recording (B+)
Lineage: unknown
Restoration: speed correction and dropout repair (March 2012).
Includes a (not very interesting) studio jam with Richie Blackmore.

This is a really good recording. All of the instruments can be clearly heard and the balance is real nice.

1. Never In My Life
2. Animal Trainer And The Toad
3. Theme For An Imaginary Western
4. Leslie West Solo
5. Dreams Of Milk And Honey
6. Leslie West & Richie Blackmore Jam - New York studio, 1971
Total length: 1:02:50

Leslie West - guitar
Felix Pappalardi - bass,
Corky Laing - drums
Steve Knight - orgam

NO ARTWORK!
Restoration:
*Speed correction* The tape ran 3.65% fast. Proper pitch was determined by finding the correct key for each song from the original studio recording, then adjusting the pitch of this bootleg until it matched my (properly tuned) guitar. I mention this because "Never In My Life" is a bit slow and plodding compared to the record, which is definitely faster. Apparently Mountain didn't get the memo that Rock 'n' Roll is ALWAYS played faster in concert. ;-) Just for reference though, at the June 28 Fillmore show later that year they also played it at this slower tempo.
The upshot of all of this is that, despite how "Never In My Life" SOUNDS, slowing the tape down by 3.65% was the correct thing to do.
No speed changes were made to the jam.

*Repaired dropout* In "Dreams of Milk and Honey", during an extremely repetitive section about 10 minutes in, there was a dropout, followed by 31 seconds of what sounded like mangled tape, then another dropout, then 53 seconds where the left channel was 3dB too quiet and the right channel was 2dB too loud. Since this was a very repetitive part anyway, I seamlessly whacked out the mangled tape and dropouts, and fixed the volume problem.
* I also retracked it and fixed sector boundry errors.

A legendary, high quality mixing board FM broadcast of Tangerine Dream from Reims Cathedral, France on Dec. 13, 1974. This upload is from the double silver disc bootleg "Live! Improvised!" (Oh Boy 2-9159). Also on the bill was Nico, Cale and Eno, with Mike Oldfield, so a stellar night was had by all. Members included Froese, Franke and Baumann. Sorry, no art but it should be available in the usual haunts. Enjoy - this is a great one.

remastering notes: the above is the original info. file with this, posted on June 7th, 2008 as torrent #199931 by turbogrande.
The levels were off in several of the tracks, some had the left higher than the right side, some had levels too high on both sides so I have balanced them out. The tracking was a bit awkward too, with some tracks beginning with several seconds of applause, and Propositions starting before the track did, so I have retracked it with each track beginning either with music or talk about that track. I have also removed a couple of gaps between tracks and recorder turn-on noises to make this a little smoother listen. It's a good low- gen. soundboard recording and now should be even more enjoyable.there is a problem toward the end of track 9 which I was not able to fix, sounds like a skipping CD in previous transfer. (It's not a repeating kind of skip or I would have fixed it.)
Other than that, this sounds pretty good for a '74 recording. I've included the artwork included in turbogrande's post which does not list track times and goes just as fine with this post too.

Nico: Reims 1974 (FM + Aud) FLAC

Copy of Nico-Reims Cathedral 1974-12-13-Folded Front
Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims, Place du Cardinal-Luçon, Reims, France
December 13, 1974 - Opening for Tangerine Dream

Compiled from a French FM radio broadcast* and an audience recording^ Sources combined where possible)(
Occasional editing was used to smooth tape pauses and to remove all Francophone radio host commentary

1. Janitor of Lunacy (4:21) ^ )(
2. The Falconer (5:38) )(
3. Valley of the Kings (3:29) )(
4. The End (The Doors) (9:32) )(
5. Abschied (3:05) *
6. Mütterlein (4:26) ^
7. Frozen Warnings (4:44) ^
8. You Forget to Answer (4:49) ^
9. We’ve Got the Gold (4:50) ^
10. No One is There (4:04) ^
11. Ari’s Song (Encore) (3:09) ^

OU: I've included some decent cover art in a separate file folder with a few nice Nico photos from around this time period, along with a few interior shots of the Reims Cathedral to give you an idea of this performance space.
I've also included a scan of a ticket stub from this show, which I believe I somehow got from this upload of the Tangerine Dream show.
I also included an amusing excerpt from an article about the show from a Circus Magazine from 1975.

Known Lineage FM Broadcast : FM French radio broadcast > unknown generation cassette > CDR > Wavelab 4.01 Remastering > WAV > FLAC8
Known Lineage Audience recording : Master Cassette from the taper > CDR > Wavelab 4.01 > WAV > FLAC8
Details: Basically I was given two rare recordings of this concert and this is a compilation and a combined version of both of these shows removing the French DJ commentary that was present on the FM broadcast version.
The FM broadcast portion although from an official radio broadcast and of much better quality, does not seem to accurately convey the magnitude and ambience of this extraordinary venue, which is amply evident in the audience version of this recording.
I found that by combining the two together, you get the best of both. Unfortunately this was only possible for about 1/3 of the show as the FM broadcast was quite short.
The audience recording was pitch matched to the FM Broadcast version, which is very close to Nico's performance on the official June 1, 1974 CD. The Indian harmonium she used was not a perfectly tuned instrument and so digital analysis is not an accurate reference.
The audience portion aside from the pitch correction is untouched, but the FM broadcast portion required some mid range compression to reduce giant volume spikes in Nico's vocals. There was a fair amount of hiss present as well that was removed
as this is more than compensated by the ambience of the audience recording which had plenty of nice high end frequencies.
A widening of the stereo separation was also applied to match the audience recording and because it sounded better in my opinion.
The first two minutes of Janitor of Lunacy is missing from the FM broadcast, so it begins with only the audience recording.
The beginning few bars of Abschied was subbed from a show at the Squat Theatre in 1980 to assist in the removal of the DJ dialogue. Oddly this song was missing from the more complete audience recording, likely due to a tape flip.
The remainder of the show is only the audience version and is not present in the broadcast without dialogue on top.
Also of note is the rare encore of Ari's Song. This may be the only recorded live performance of this classic from the Marble Index record.
A number of liberties were taken to simulate transitions between tracks as the audience taper shut his recorder off between every song. Infinitely preferable to the jarring Francophone DJ interruptions.
If anyone has the pre-FM broadcast tapes, please contact me and I would be thrilled to upgrade this further.
Enjoy !

Gong: Brest 1974 (FM) FLAC

by request
g2
1974-02-06 - Brest, FR - Salle Des Fetes - sbd (89m) (2cd)
Daevid Allen, Didier Malherbe, Tim Blake, Steve Hillage, Mike Howlett, Rob Tait, Di Bond

OU: This is the famous Full Moon show where Daevid experienced a memorable acid trip on stage (see his "Gong Dreaming 2" book for more). I'm glad to share this lossless version, another circulating version was definitely lossy (my copy had diginoise too).

Disc 1:
1) The Other Side Of The Sky (11:28)
2) Dynamite (Bambule) (1:48)
3) Castle In The Clouds (1:13)
4) 6/8 (3:23)
5) Radio Gnome Invisible (13:20)
6) Zero The Hero And The Witch's Spell (cut) (13:53)

Disc 2:
1) Zero The Hero And The Witch's Spell (coda - cuts in) (1:15)
2) Sold To The Highest Buddha (3:32)
3) I Never Glid Before (5:43)
4) Fohat Digs Holes In Space (19:36)
5) Flute Salad (12:35)
6) Oily Way (cut) (1:26)

Source: cass>cdr (Tascam CDRW 750)>wav (EAC)>editing (Adobe Audition 1.5)>retracked (MAGIX Audio Cleaning Lab 17 deluxe)>SBE fix(TLH)>flac.
Date and venue confirmed by Daevid Allen's "Gong Dreaming 2" book (p. 287).
Show listed on PlanetGong and Calyx websites ("Full Moon Gig").
Stereo soundboard recording (received as radio).
- "Other Side OF The Sky" cuts in on intro.
- "Zero The Hero" cut with tape flip. Cuts back in on coda (disc 2).
- "Glid Before" cut at 1:36.
Most of this ("Other Side" to "Fohat") appears in The Farm Tapes (worse quality, different sequence).
"Zero The Hero And The Witch's Spell" and "Fohat Digs Holes In Space" also appear in The Mushroom Tapes.
As there are no cuts between songs, I decided to leave "Zero The Hero" split across the two discs so disc 1 ends with the tape flip.
I got this tape transfer in a mail trade with a guy from San Diego who has a very huge cassette collection. He hasn't traded in the last 20 years so a lot of recordings haven't circulated in the digital trading pool yet.
A couple of bits were edited (silence and a loud beep after the cut in "Glid Before"). Hissy but it's a good stereo soundboard recording...enjoy!

Rocksy Music: Paris 1974 (Pre-FM) FLAC *Perfect Edition

Finally - This is the CORRECT post and not a Corrected (by me) post!
oaaa_roxymusic2
please note that the actual artwork (enclosed) contains nudity
Paris, Olympia
November 27, 1974
Master Reel to reel

01.Out of the Blue
02.A Song For Europe
03.Three and Nine
04.If It Takes All Night
05.In Every Dream Home A Heartache
06.If There is Something (incl. Violin Solo Eddie Jobson)
07.All I Want Is You
TT 47:27

Lineage: Europe 1 original reels > Teac A3340S > HD > SoundForge 7.0 > CD Wave > FLAC Frontend (level 6)

Bryan Ferry - vocals, keyboards
Eddie Jobson - strings, keyboards, vocals
Andy MacKay - saxophone, oboe
Phil Manzanera - guitar, vocals
Paul Thompson - drums
John Wetton - bass, vocals

OU: I think this IS something special. Some time ago I had access to quite a few master reels from Europe 1 that were saved from the thrash some time ago. Unfortunately the reels were mixed up and only a few complete. But the historical value is very high. This is one I managed to have it transferred using a revox player.
Europe 1 was one of those stations that used to record many shows, in particular from the Olympia. My belief is that they were doing a king of matrix by both capturing the soundboard but having also a few onstage microphones. This comes from the 1974 tour. It sounds amazing. -ldb

Apparently, The first time that I posted this it was slow. The second time I posted it it was corrected by me. This final post contains the original Pre-FM tapes but at the proper speed from the first original uploader.
