Friday 12 August 2011 Jazz Middelheim

Toots Thielemans (mouth organ), Kenny Werner (piano and keyboards), Airto Moreira (drums and percussion), Oscar Castro-Neves (guitar and vocals)

Toots Thielemans is 89 years old, yet he seems indestructible. At Jazz Middelheim 2011 he’s joined by his faithful American pianist Kenny Werner and two Brazilian music experts: the Brazilian guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves, one of the creators of bossa nova, and Airto Moreira, an excellent drummer and percussionist, known from the days of Weather Report and Chick Corea’s Return To Forever. Toots seems like a duck in a pond when playing with these musicians. Toots will submerge his mouth organ in rhythms of samba and bossa nova and classics like ‘Manha da Carnival’ and ‘Chega de Saudade’. These all-stars around him will play cherished jazz standards as well as their own songs. Ever since Toots began performing at Jazz Middelheim in 1981 and became godfather of the festival, he’s been there for every edition. Each time Toots is performing between the trees at Jazz Middelheim, it is truly magic.
He succeeded in establishing the mouth organ as a full solo instrument and developed a very expressive, catchy musical voice. For many years that feat has given him the award for best instrumentalist in the ‘miscellaneous instruments’ category by the leading American magazine, Down Beat.
Toots Thielemans’ story was part of the collective inheritance: the ketje of the Marollen who conquered the world. He was playing the accordion at the age of three and at age 17 he started to play the mouth organ, influenced by Larry Adler. Somewhat later he started to play the guitar after the shock that Django Reinhardt had given him. He broke through internationally after his European tour with Benny Goodman. In 1952 he emigrated to the US where he was playing alongside the Charlie Parker All Stars and for six years he was part of the George Shearing quintet. He developed a new sound by whistling in unison and by playing the guitar which started when he was recording tunes for commercials. He would play alongside the biggest jazz musicians but was also requested as a mouth organ soloist for many movie scores like Midnight Cowboy, The Getaway, Turks Fruit and Jean de Florette. Toots Thielemans was giving concerts and recording with George Shearing, Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Bill Evans, Jaco Pastorius, Natalie Cole, Pat Metheny, Paul Simon, Billy Joel. His ‘Bluesette’ was almost made a national anthem.
He will be joined onstage by pianist Kenny Werner in Antwerp. Kenny Werner is a fierce keyboard virtuoso who can swing hard but will also play the most beautiful melodies on his piano. A concert with Toots Thielemans and Kenny Werner still produces true ‘ode to music’; this is thanks to their collaboration through the years and a true friendship.
The 71-year-old Oscar Castro-Neves is a guitarist, arranger and composer. He was there when some barely known musicians like Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto were creating bossa nova in Rio. He was touring alongside Stan Getz and was creating music with Sergio Mendes and his band, Brazil ’66. He has known a versatile career in which he worked as a film producer and film composer as well. He was collaborating with Toots Thielemans on the albums Brasil Project I and II. Drummer and percussionist Airto Moreira, originating from Brazil, is married to vocalist Flora Purim but has been living in the States since 1967. He has worked with Weather Report and Chick Corea’s Return To Forever. Airto has made music with several famous jazz musicians like Cannonball Adderley and Wayne Shorter. He has won the award for best percussionist 20 times in the Down Beat polls.
