OU Comments: In November of 2001, our friend David Le Hunte (aka Massed Gadget) sent us a copy of this show from what was then known as the best recording of this date. I spent some time cleaning it up and, ultimately, improved its sound quality. Notably, 'Speak To Me' was over seven minutes long with about six minutes being just the heartbeat...
Anyway, back to our story. While on the job, our pal Gonzo set out to find the best possible recording, and over time uncovered the master that we've used for this release. It comes from a generous taper who wishes only to be known as JCE (oooh, the mystery) to us. However, he has our deepest thanks and appreciation for this rare find. To my ears, this is the finest audience recording of the 1994 European Tour.
Show Notes: This show was indeed the "Last Bell" to date for Pink Floyd as a group, as this is the final 1994 show that they performed, as well as the last full performance of Dark Side Of The Moon. The show was a benefit for Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and others. The recording is an enjoyable listen from start to finish.
Technical Notes: This is a powerful document that stands on its own, since it is possibly one of the best audience recordings of the 1994 Division Bell Tour. The crowd was rather quiet that night, which contributed to a very decent recording that boasts excellent quality throughout. There is nice mix and balance throughout. The only very minor wart is the short tape flip during the early lead-in to 'Sorrow'; other than that, the show is complete.
Taper's Comments: This was the last of 14 nights that the Floyd performed at Earls Court, London, and the final night of the Division Bell tour--and as of today, the last time that Pink Floyd played live. During the run of the shows, the metal heads from the Division Bell album and CD cover were on the top of the entrance overhang at the front of Earls Court, so as you came out of the tube station, they just loomed above you--they were huge! The stone heads from the cassette cover, equally huge, were inside the foyer just behind one of the VW Golf Pink Floyd cars that had been produced--I guess it was one of the 30 Golfs that were imported into the UK.
I had got a ticket for this night because my ticket for the second night (13/10/94) was in Stand 8 which had collapsed on the opening night of the Earls Court shows (12/10/94). The two stands that collapsed weren’t replaced until the 17th I think, which was the rescheduled date for the show cancelled on the 12th. I couldn’t make that night--had to be back at work--but I was given a full refund AND a ticket exchange. The only show for which they had tickets left was for the last night, and I jumped at the chance. So this was a free show for
me ;-)
The show was recorded on my old Aiwa personal stereo with an Aiwa mic that came with it. It was the one that I used for quite a few of the '94 shows. The mic was a small stereo mic, which was clipped to the peak of a Pink Floyd tour baseball cap. My seat was about midway back on the right hand side, on the first block that rose from the floor--Block 6.
Whereas most of the '94 shows had the huge silver construction in the centre of the stadiums that included the mixing desk and the glitter ball, at Earls Court that wasn’t there. The glitter ball was suspended from the ceiling and was, in effect, upside down. When it came down and opened up, the effect was far better than at any other venue that I saw the show. As during the Wall shows, the ceiling had loads of flags hanging down--this time with the various head emblems that were on the artwork rather than the hammers. Apparently they were there to help the sound!
For me, this was the best '94 show that I saw, the performance of DSOTM was great, and the band seemed to really enjoy the show. Dave also embellished on quite a few tunes--'Sorrow', 'Run Like Hell' and 'One Of These Days'. There was a much lighter mood in the arena. The shows following the stand collapse had a tense atmosphere, and the performances were very staid and workmanlike, whereas this seemed to be a very relaxed performance.
Dave’s comment at the end was one that he used a few times: “We’ll see you again one of these days,” which seemed true at the time as there were rumours of a European tour in '95-like they had done in '89 after the MLOR World Tour. At the very end of the show, after the encore and during the applause, the three backing singers appeared on stage dressed in cleaning maid outfits and brooms and swept Dave, Nick and Rick off the stage.
On leaving the arena, all I really noticed was that three banks of four searchlights--one at each side of Earls Court and one on the roof--were shining their very powerful lights into the clear London sky, as people made bleating noises as we were herded down into the tube station. OU: This is NOT a "perfect" recording of this wonderful show by any means. I was using borrowed equipment that I was somewhat familiar with but at the time my inexperience in live recording plus the chemical entertainments of the evening contributed to some amateurish mistakes which are listed as follows.
short bursts of static at "fade in" points can be heard at various times (6 times I think) this is due to the volume recalibrating with each pause and restart of the recorder. I have worked to minimize these moments with digital editing.
The mics were worn in a hat as stated. The movement of my head and therefore of the mics caused some odd shifts in stereo image at times such as when one's head must be turned to see events occurring around the stadium e.g. during guitar solo of Comfortably Numb.
The biggest mistake was that the recorder remained stopped or paused for a period of time in the first set and caused Sorrow and Take it back to be missed completely with a significant cut after 1:30 in Coming Back to Life. The only explanation is that the recorder was accidentally stopped and was not discovered until the songs were over (sad) the same occurs in the second set with High Hopes.
This is the only version of "Rain" Like Hell that I know of. Dave and co. are clearly heard singing the word "RAIN" instead of "Run" and I assure you it was raining like hell through the opening in Texas Stadium! Very Cool!
The show was great regarding both the technical and performance aspects of this show. Also the folks around the mics were very cool and very quiet in my opinion and the recording is quite unobtrusive from an audience standpoint (especially considering the mics were worn close to the body!). Please enjoy. Don't encode to mp3 for trading elsewhere and give credit if you reseed. Thanks

OU: As with other recordings that I have posted, this was in a trade around 1999. It was on 2 CD-R's. I don't remember who gave it to me, but there was no bootleg title on it. It was only labeled "4-17-1994". I downloaded "Jurrasic Sparks" and the "1st Gen" of that recorder, but this is a different source. Gilmour's comments to the crowd are the same, so it is indeed the same concert.
Noticeable DIFFERENCES are:
1. This source is crisper and sounds closer than the JSparks source.
2. This source has someone near the recorder saying "They're hot" right before Gilmour says "Thank You very much. Good evening to you." JSparks does not.
3. This source has people near the recorder guessing which song is next by saying "On the turning away", "Yeah", "Right", and "Classic" right before "A Great Day For Freedom" begins. JSparks does not. Instead, JSparks has several people saying "Sit Down!" and a lady who starts singing the first line of "On The Turning Away" right before "A Great Day For Freedom" starts.
4. On this source, during the "Money" intro sound effects, a man near the recorder yells "Hey Dan!" On JSparks, the yell is missing.
5. On this source, after "Hey You", someone near the recorder says what sounds like "Very favorite." On JSparks, that comment is missing.
6. On JSparks, during the intro of "Run Like Hell", someone near the recorder yells "Get Out!" and a minute later, a man starts coughing. On this source, none of that is heard. Instead, this source has a man yelling what sounds like "Gilmour!" and "Ever more!" during that intro section.

This "Recorder 2" has a little tape hiss during some songs in the second half of the show, but it's really only noticeable during quiet intros to songs like WYWH or US and Them. Maybe the person who has the master tapes will see this and share! ENJOY!

This is a bootleg classic, if there is such a thing. This is an FM broadcast quality recording. The band isn't very energetic, and the performance suffers (especially when compared to shows played a week earlier in France). The KTS version has a 6 panel fold-out cover, including two panels of their own catalog.
The extent of Kurt's interaction with the audience is a simple "Gracias" before "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Krist tries to bring up the sprits and leaves the crowd with many memorable quotes. Sad to say only two full shows and one TV apprentice were all that was left in the band's future.
Here are the liner notes by Professor Stone (bad grammer and all) which pretty much says it all...
Well what can you say? So far 1994 has been pretty rough for Nirvana. A near fatal accident in Rome has brought out the vultures hungry for a corpse. Well tough luck suckers, our boy Kurt is still with us and with only a few weeks off to recover, its back on the road to continue the "In Utero" European tour. None of this "Eddie's got a headache, cancel all engagements for the rest of the year", Kurt nearly dies, but within weeks he's vowed to be back on the boards.
It is going to take a lot more than this to knock down Nirvana's wall. Regardless of the relentless media attack Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love and Nirvana are here to stay, like it or not. The "In Utero" album delivered everything it promised and more, Kurt Cobain has proved himself as the first classic songwriter of the nineties if only you would look beneath the headlines.
What a performer chooses to do in the privacy of his own home, or hotel room, is down to him alone and nobody else. The sad thing is that the people who continually cut down Kurt for his choice of personal treatment always hail the Keith Richards of this world as heroes. Talk about double standards. At the end of the day it is the chords that count, not the chemicals. Nirvana make stunning music and have never failed to deliver the goods. It is time that people checked out Kurt's lyrics and then they might just begin to understand.
In a conversation in the Nirvana Collectors' forum, the sound quality of this disc was determined to be slightly less than that of "XXII II MCMXCIV". For this reason, "Roma" receives a grade of 99% while "XXII II MCMXCIV" gets 99% (one point subtraction). This is still arguably the best disc to pick up for 2-22-94 since the artwork is exceptional.

OU: This is a rare uncirculated copy of the 1994 Columbus show. I noticed an unexplainable skip in the beginning of 'Learning to Fly'. The recording was also extremely bassy and when I received it, I removed the heavy bass throughout the show and it still seems a bit bassy. I did not want to alter the recording too much but it had to be done. The recording was also very fast so I used some effects to slow it to normal speed. This show was not de-hissed. There is an audience fade out and fade in between tracks 4 and 5, songs complete. There some nice effects before Money, and 3 obvious show indentifiers. The first is alot of jibber jabber about from someone close to the recorder arguing about seats 24 and 21. The second is during 'Run Like Hell' where Guy yells out "They're gonna send you back to Columbus in a cardboard box." The third is when Gilmour sneaks in a few bars of Crosby Stills Nash & Young's "Ohio."
