Lynyrd Skynyrd taped this brief live unplugged performance prior to the start of their 1993 tour at a club in Chattanooga, TN. I managed to capture this show onto cassette from another city about 2 hours away with several large mountains interfering with the reception. I was able to pull it off with very little static in the reception. The first 1:10 there is moderate static as my receiver was in the "FM Stereo" mode. I had to switch to "mono" for the noise to clear up so this show is in mono. The show sounds like it was a lot of fun for both the band members present and the audience. There is a lot of dialogue by the band just clowning around and by taking questions from the audience.

OU comments: there is some uncertainty of this date and venue of this show, but it is definitely recorded in Boston. It is not the whole show, but apparently includes the 1st 8 songs of the concert in a good sound quality for a Lynyrd Skynyrd aud of this time. The setlist suggests 1975 to me, but it could be 1976? seems to be the tour of their 3rd album "nuthin' fancy".
track 7 appears on the fourth album, gimme back my bullets, but it's the only song on that album not written by Lynyrd Skynyrd members. the tour of that album was in 1976. it's conspicuously missing "free bird", they ALWAYS play that one. It is second only to Stairway to Heaven and Aqualung (well ahead of smoke on the water) in my list of most overplayed songs ever so no great loss imho (some may disagree, it's the biggest hit they ever had by a mile) but I only got one side full in a tape trade many years ago, before there were torrents. if I had the whole show I'd share it all, but this is all I got. at least all these songs are complete. There was probably one or two other bands in this show, which was rather common at the Boston Garden, and Music Hall.
there seemed to be suspicion that this was at the Music Hall, but it sounds like the Boston Garden boombox acoustics to my ears. There's not too much crowd noise in this recording. thanks much to the unknown taper who recorded this.

Bootlegzone.com: Now here's a curious one. Needless to say, something like this would be ridiculously easy to fake. Any schmuck with a guitar processor and a cheap 4-track could do this. There's intermittent talking and chatter going on in the background, but no sign of Van Zant, whose presence would obviously greatly help to authenticate these recordings. Also, why Skynryd would be working on songs already recorded and officially released years before the stated 1976 date is beyond me. The last track is Skynyrd, a couple of notches down in sound quality.

Recording Notes: This concert originally aired Saturday, February 5th, 2005 on the CMT television network that airs in America (www.cmt.com). There were numerous commercial breaks during this program airing, so instead of having the songs fade in/out between the breaks and commentary portions of the airing, I crossfaded all of the tracks together so that it now flows together very smoothly. I edited out the interview segments, commercials and song introductions, because I felt they took away from the flow of the recording (I felt they were pretty boring anyway). It seems that the backing guitarist wasn't hooked into the soundboard, so some of the familiar "riffs" that we are all accustomed aren't included (although you can hear them in the background if you listen very closely). The total time of this recording is 35 minutes and 44 seconds (exact times of the songs are posted below). I give this recording a good solid A rating.

Here is one of the most interesting Skynyrd shows out there. Disc 1 is the only known recording of a Skynyrd soundcheck. Ronnie Van Zant is not present. Ronnie rarely did soundchecks, as he wanted to save his voice for the show. Steve Gaines sings Ain't No Good Life, That Smell(!!!), and the 1964 "Jumpin'" Gene Simmons hit "Haunted House". The jams are interesting, and there are parts that may have some day become Skynyrd songs had the plane crash not happened. The last jam did in fact form the basis of You Got That Right later that year. The sound is not great on the soundcheck and it may run a little slow, but it's still worth listening to.
