Kansas: Tulsa 1976 (Soundboard) FLAC

KansasLogo
Tulsa, Oklahoma 1976
Soundboard Recording

OU: All the information I have is as follows.. Way back many years ago I received this on a cassette tape from a friend of Kerry Livgren. I was told it was from the master tape. After a few years of having it, cds were being created and since I knew nothing of burning them at that time, I sent the tape back out to Topeka, KS. where a fellow KANSAS collector transferred the tape to CDR. I have no idea what program he used.
I listened to the cds today, and felt the hiss was a bit too much, so I used the EQ in SOUNDFORGE to get rid of a bit of hiss. NOT ALL OF IT, as I didn't want to loose
any highs. It sounds much better to my ears than the un-fixed version. As far as speed goes, I didn't get out a guitar and check the pitch. I also found that the songs on the 2 cd version I have will fit on one 80 minute cd, so it is presented here that way. (Back when this was done, there were mostly 74 minute cds)
Anyway, I used FLAC 8 to encode it. I hope I have all the details I know listed. I am sure if I have anything wrong I will hear about it!! It is a great show. ONE THING -- this version does not have Kerry's cool pre-recorded keyboard concert intro included. I have never heard a version of Tulsa 76 with it, so I assume it was not recorded.. This starts a bit into COWS..
Enjoy and share.. I will seed lots more KANSAS if the crowd here likes!!
This was when I liked KANSAS best --- "but the picture's faded, and time has stolen youth away".... (from LAMPLIGHT SYMPHONY)

Clever Trevor's Notes......
Take into consideration this was recorded during a thunderstorm. And has a bit of tape slipping. How many Monolith shows are outthere? Exactly.
Disc One was running a bit slow, so did a slight pitch correction of 2.946% for those who like to know. Raised the volume a bit,and boosted the right channel by 7% as it was quite a bit lower. Disc Two pitch was just about right (work that one out) but still raised the right channel again ( my brother had a dodgy cassette deck like that) did a couple of fades and got rid of the odd bit dead air and reduced the thunderstorm crackles. Slightly adjusted bass and treble, and marvelled at how good Kansas are.

Original Notes............
Well, everyone has been requesting a MONOLITH tour show. They are hard to come by!! (almost as hard as a complete soundboard from the first and second album tours!)
This is the WLS FM radio broadcast, that was aired live as it happened on July 4, 1979.
As Robby mentions, it was going out live around the world, but a bad storm caused lots of problems with the signal and this is rough. It is an FM broadcast, and although it is rough, I have still enjoyed it for many years. To me, it sounds as good as many audience recordings I have heard through the years. Not a problem for me to listen to, but you be the judges!
I got this on 2 cdrs when people started burning their own discs from cassette tapes long ago. I have NO IDEA of the lineage, except I know this has not been done as MP3 and converted back. I took the cds and ripped them with SOUNDFORGE, titled the tracks, used FLACfrontend to encode them (FLAC 8), and drank a glass of ice water during the conversion.
(No waterglass was harmed in the process) I have enjoyed this for the powerful show it is..I hope those of you who (like me) find MONOLITH to be a diamond in the crown of KANSAS work, will enjoy this!

OU Comments: This was my fourth trip to beautiful Infinity Hall in Norfolk, CT this year. It is really a great place to show. Acoustics are fantastic, and with less than 300 seats, there isn't a bad one in the house. I'm not overly familiar with Kansas. I know some of their more famous songs, and I saw them live twice in 2000 when they opened for Yes. I was impressed with their musicianship. I thought they put on a great show. The recording came out great. All in all, it was a great evening of music. -- MP August 2011

Kansas: Portland 1975 (Soundboard) FLAC

Crimson_Skies front
Title: "Crimson Skies Of Ice And Fire"
Tour: Masque Tour
Place: Portland, OR, USA
Venue: Paramount Theater
Date: 1975-12-12
==> Excellent Soundboard <==

Lineage: mixing desk > unknown analogue medium > CD > EAC > WAV > TLH > Flac

01 Song For America
02 Icarus - Borne On Wings Of Steel
03 Down The Road
04 Belexes
05 Drum Solo
06 Guitar Solo
07 Child Of Innocence
08 Bringing It Back (incl. Can I Tell You)
Total time: 47:40 mins.

OU Notes: Did you ever wonder just how often a die-hard Kansas fan (you know, the one that travels oceans just to see them perform in their hometown) happens to stumble upon a previously undocumented pristine soundboard recording from the early days of the band? A date that isn't even listed in the most elaborate of Kansas tour dates archives? Speaking for myself, I can count the occasions on two fingers... The last time it happened was the Villanova Field House show. No, wait... that was an FM, this is straight from the mixing desk. And it's even from the year prior to it: 1975, the early stages of the Masque tour! To my knowledge it never aired.
Well, about the show... it's short. Way too short, if you'd ask me. Kansas (together with Ted Nugent) was opening for Aerosmith at the Paramount Theater in Portland this night. So we don't get Mysteries and Mayhem > The Pinnacle or Lonely Street. But you won't hear me complain, because what's more important is what we do get: a raw & fast-paced, hard rocking show in a quality that almost rivals an official release. Yes, that's right: rivals an official release. I made some covers, named it "Crimson Skies Of Ice And Fire" (after Icarus - Borne On Wings Of Steel) and now it's here for all of you to enjoy!

OU Notes: This basically is a collection of rare pro-shot material of live songs the band has done over the years. None of them have ever been commercialy released. I've reworked all of the footage and tried to make a nice DVD package for us fans to enjoy. The material used was either not included on the 30th anniversary DVD "Sail On" (tracks 1 & 2), broadcast in foreign countries (tracks 3-5 & 9-12), taken from inhouse screen feeds (tracks 6 & 7), or outtakes from other projects the band did (track 8). I've also thrown in a little bonus at the end. It's the only track that isn't pro-shot, but it's a newly made multicam of two very steady sources at a special event in the band's history.

Remaster notes: The image used comes from some old VHS tapes I've received in trades and video material I've grabbed at sites like Dime. I've done as much as I could to restore the image quality. Results varied and range from good to excellent I'd say. The output was reframed to widescreen to keep up with current standards. I also tweaked the material I've worked on earlier. (See some of the clips on Youtube).
As for the audio: that's the best part, because it's excellent on all tracks! I've taken the best sources (some pre-FM) and worked on them and synced them with the images. "Volume 1" was added because you never know what might surface in the future...
Enjoy!

Kansas: Baarlo 1981 (FM) FLAC

Untitled-6
Sjiwa Summer Rock Festival
Tour: Audio Visions
Place: Baarlo, The Netherlands
Venue: Horse Racing Course
Date: August 22, 1981
==> Excellent FM broadcast <==
Flacs by: kerrylives

01 - Song For America
02 - Got To Rock On
03 - Paradox
04 - Point Of Know Return
05 - Dust In the wind
06 - Miracles Out Of Nowhere
07 - Loner
08 - Down The Road
09 - Portrait (He Knew)
10 - Carry On Wayward Son
Total time: 49:40 mins.

OU: I don't remember how I got the original files, but they were lossless. The source is a FM re-broadcast on Dutch national radio station KRO. The original files had some indexing mistakes, so I corrected that. While I was at it I decided to do some minor remastering to make it sound even more enjoyable. This is a historical recording since it's the last one to my knowledge that features all six original member. Not long after this show lead singer Steve Walsh decided to leave the band. This is Kansas' first performance in The Netherlands and the next one would be almost a quarter of a century later (2005). The festival they played was organised to celebrate the first 10 years of a youth centre called Sjiwa in the village of Baarlo. Other acts that day were: Girls Walk By, Jango Edwards, 38 Special and Foreigner.
Enjoy!

Phil Ehart - drums
Dave Hope - bass
Rich Williams - guitar
Robby Steinhardt - violin/vocals
Kerry Livgren - guitar/keyboards/synthesizers
John Elefante - vocals/keyboards

SQ - 9-9.5/10 ex- to ex aud, IMHO (OU) as always
One CD - 11 tracks, 57:50
This IS the complete show.

OU: I attended the concert and taped the show so I'll give you as accurate a description as I can. It was a hot, beautiful day in downtown Chicago, IL but it was a free show so it was MAYHEM. By the time I parked the car in a garage and crossed that big street into Grant Park, the place was packed. There was an area that one could buy tickets for and sit through the shows but the tickets were long sold out. Every drunken downtown Chicago scumbag/deadbeat was there and I could see that this was going to be a hellish show as far as "audience participation" was concerned. I made my way through the crowd and saw an empty area but the view of the stage was blocked by a giant "backstop" for lack of a better term. I figured that I didn't need to see the bands to tape them so WTF. When I first got there, there was almost nobody in this area. As soon as the music started, however, the drunken idiots started to filter in and soon it was recess at the looney bin. Everybody was blabbing as if no bands were there. I could see a little through the backstop and caught glimpses of Kansas but the sound quality was wonderful except for the loaded a-holes.
I edited out the worst of the screaming and woo-wooing but left in a little of the noise so you can get a taste of the idiocy. No music was lost in the editing process.
Hey, that would be a great name for the recording ; "A Taste Of The Idiocy". well, no, it makes it sound like Kansas plays idiotic music which is far from the truth. Better forget about that one...
The SQ is really good; vocals and instruments are all clearly heard. I believe that this recording is uncirculated. There was one other taper there who ended up standing right next to me !! We both got Yes (he had a minidisc recorder IIRC) but his Kansas was incomplete as he arrived late. You'll hear the exchange on the recording. All told, it was a great show that I think all Kansas fans will enjoy. It was a short show so very little noteworthy occurred. I could barely see the stage so I have no great visual news to impart. I cannot believe that this show happened 10 years ago! My, how time flies when you're getting old...that's about all that I have for this show so let's get the ball rolling...
Finally, please don't buy, sell or convert this show to mp3 or any other lossy format. Please seed this as long as you can. Please trade this freely as it is almost certainly uncirculated. This show will be a welcome addition to any Kansas fan's collection. So, as Mr. Natural is so fond of saying, have fun, don't freak out and enjoy the concert!

OU: This week I was able to see three of my top five favorite bands. Kansas and Styx in the same show and Yes two days prior. Kansas never ceases to impress me when ever I see them. Another tight, stellar show albeit too short.
My sincerest apologies for not getting the first two songs, I was fighting the crowds in the lobby to get to the floor and wire up. Perhaps a filler copy will pop up soon.
Enjoy

Foreigner
Kansas/Styx/Foreigner
Road Runner Mobile Amphitheatre
Charlotte, NC [USA]
2010- June 8

Recorder: UNIVONC
Seat: VIP (Right Stack Facing Stage Directly Back)
OU NOTES: This was really a "shitty" day and the recording does not reflect it.
I am currently establishing a new medical practice (bitter lawsuit) and had to deal with all the crap with that.
I had a loaner car that day while my car was serviced.
I got rear ended in an accident. (not my fault) My back hurt that evening.
I sat in my seat and during this show some guy just "appears" in the box. I point him out during "cold as ice" and he is asked to leave. He then replies "all you had to do was ask". I replied, "get out." (I agree, all he had to do was ask and he could have sat in the box)......
During "hot blooded" the manager of the amphitheatre comes in and wants to sit down.
(He is a good friend)
However, my rig was in the seat and gets dumped on the ground. He has no clue what it was and I scooped it up. Unfortunately I feel my run of recording has come to an end. You may hear some brief discussion during "hot Blooded".
I got flustered and went home before "Juke Box Hero". This was really an awful day personally.
However, I refused to listen to the recording thinking it was plain crap BUT, I got surprised.
The recording is really really good and there is absolutely NO EQ done. It was cut and uploaded.
The torrent is true Master.
No fluff whatsoever.

OU NOTES:
Kansas has always been very special to me. It was one of the first four 8 tracks I ever purchased. I have ALWAYS wanted to see them and I was NOT one bit disappointed.
My 18 year old son saw me tearing up when they started. (embarrassed to say, but it was a wonderful to bring my youth past and thelove for this band to FINALLY see them!)
I would like to give special thanks to Belexes who has provided me with such wonderful recordings of concerts and especially Kansas.
This would be a very good recording...... BUT Since Kansas was the opening band, people were going to their seats, talking. (it can be heard minimally)
I unfortunately and subconsciously found myself whispering (singing) to the second stance of "Miracles" and it can vaugely by heard.
Lastly, during "Hold On" guitar solo, some a-hole walks up to me and asks how much was my Bud Light. I ignored him and then he asks again. I gave him an a-hole answer of "20 bucks" just so he would be pissed and leave.
