This 2CD set collects what’s available of the private recordings Jimi made in the Spring of 1968.
Disc 1, tracks 1-8: This is the "old" apartment tape, commonly referred to as "The Drake Hotel Demos".
Disc 1, tracks 9-13: Five tracks that previously appeared on ATM 063-064 "On the Road (To Electric Ladyland)", but are upgraded here.
Disc 2, tracks 1-9: The sample of the eBay tape from several years ago - the so-called "10.000 Dollar Tape".
Disc 2, tracks 10-12: Recorded during March-April 1968 period, the recording is often referred to as "The Paul Caruso Abuse Session" or "Rag Session", and starts with a loose attempt at "All Along The Watchtower" and ends with "Bright Lights, Big City". Those songs are given separate tracks.
Disc 2, track 13: Known by various names (most commonly "Room Full Of Mirrors Poetry Recital")

Unknown generation, unknown lineage, but definitely an upgrade to the two other known sources. The tape starts halfway Fire, and Loverman (after Hear my Train Comin) is missing.
This was borrowed from Crosstown Torrents and is a wonderful capture. If you've heard the first two sources, the impression is one of a laid back show, and echoey sound. This was recorded closer to the stage, everything is clear including vocals, right up front--and it's ferocious. It picks up just before the break in "Fire" and he really tears into it. Thank you to the taper, uploader and all involved. Yipes! Nothing official, nothing on tracker...

At last, Hendrix outtakes sets worth considering
Hendrix acolytes have been inundated with outtake releases since day one (at last count there were over 160). The boom in CD technology just made it easier to scoop up and digitise any studio reels that could be found. Compare that to the quintet of original vinyl (Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love, Electric Ladyland, Smash Hits and Band Of Gypsys) and the mind boggles at how an artist who only recorded for four years could possibly amass so much unreleased material. After his untimely death in September 1970, the floodgates well and truly opened. Posthumous albums such as Rainbow Bridge and Hendrix In The West are still essential, but no one in their right mind would give a passing glance to disgraces the likes of Woke Up This Morning & Found Myself Dead. We’ve had some fine stabs at compiling the lost Hendrix: Live & Unreleased and the incredible, 56-track, purple-boxed Jimi Hendrix Experience. But nothing has really shown how he developed his music. In The Studio does just that with aplomb. Using original tapes sourced from the Michael Jeffrey Estate (a private contact says a skip in New York!), on Disc 10 you can hear just how enthusiastic and fast Hendrix was recording Are You Experienced. Some of the versions of Can You See Me and Fire contain such succulent psych guitar that you’re left begging for more. Disc One covers at the Axis sessions, and Hendrix’s focus in Olympic Studios is clear. The best disc has a first proper Castles Made Of Sand outtake and two incredibly psychedelic versions of Little One: a Hendrix sitar-drone jam with Traffic (allegedly including Brian Jones). History states that Chas Chandler couldn’t stand the Electric Ladyland sessions once they moved to New York City. Yawning jams with Hendrix gobbling LSD and snorting cocaine drove him back to England. At least half the set is taken up with these: a 36-minute Voodoo Chile, and one disc almost dedicated to Rainy Day Dream Away are for fanatics alone. The sleevenotes, attributed to Jon Kirkman, are full of howlers and should be treated with caution. One track, Closer To The Truth (March 1969) is credited to Hendrix as a ‘sound collage’. A call to Kathy Etchingham confirmed that it’s just a stoned Hendrix reciting poetry to a New Animals record. But in terms of sound quality and exhaustiveness, In The Studio is the best Hendrix outtakes set extant. www.spincds.com

Jimi Hendrix and the Experience - Scandinavia Vols 1 and 2 (12 CD Limited Edition Box Set) Both Volumes (All 12 CDs included)

Vol 1: 7 complete 1967/68 performances from Sweden and Denmark - presented together for the first time officially licensed* from the estate of Hendrix’s former manager, Michael Jeffery individually numbered, only 2000 copies world-wide.
Presented here are complete concerts sourced from amateur recordings with the exception of the 5th September live radio show which is now in improved sound quality over its previous release on Stages. What you will hear on these concerts from Sweden and Denmark is the raw energy of those early shows and the excitement of fans perhaps seeing Jimi for the first time and being blown away by the Experience. You will hear what they heard; you will become part of the audience, you will share their Experience. For us, this more than makes up for what it might lack in recording quality; we believe these tapes have adequate clarity and deserve release on their own merit. You will also hear occasional problems that Jimi faced with the mismatch of volume levels between voice and instruments due to inadequate, low-powered public address systems for his vocals and sometimes unreliable guitar amplifiers. Although on first glance the set-lists look repetitive, one has to bear in mind that Jimi never played the same song in the same way twice. He liked to keep things fresh and was a master of improvisation, hence his love of jamming.

Vol 2: Scandinavia had proved to be an extremely positive and fertile market for the music of Jimi Hendrix. This boxed set contains recordings from two specific tours and although there is only twelve months between the two sets of concerts captured here much had happened to Jimi between the two tours.

The 1969 tour finds Jimi and the Experience heading out on what would be the original Experience’s final tour. The second series of recordings, drawn from 1970, found the band (often billed as the Experience but featuring Jimi, Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox) fresh from the previous day’s massive Isle Of Wight concert performing the first of these concerts in Stockholm. Jimi Hendrix however would be dead in just over two weeks after commencing this brief Scandinavian tour which followed as series of concerts in Germany that had ended in disarray. The two concerts featured in this boxed set of recordings do capture the essence of Jimi Hendrix live and certainly do not show any lessening in his talent either as a song writer or performer and for this reason these recordings are important.

I did put that version up at Crosstown Torrents quite a while ago. This represents the best version I have seen of this set.
ps. on BP's original notes state the venue as "Stadthalle, Offenbach, Germany - 1967-05-18". The end credits on the Sky Arts version state "HR-Studios, Frankfurt - 1969-05-29.
According to "Electric Gypsy" the Stadthalle, Offenbach on the 18th May is the correct venue & date. On the 29th May 1967 the Experience were playing "Baroque '67" at the Tulip Bulb Auction Hall, Spalding, Lincolnshire, England.

When MCA put out the 2nd set at Berkeley in 2003, it left us asking "what about the 1st set?" It didn't happen, so Radioactive adopted a bold stance with this release. These recordings have been circulating among traders for some time with top soundboard quality and that is the case here. This is the same mix as the three track CD that was free with the old videocassette "Jimi Plays Berkeley".
Jimi came out that evening looking tough in leather pants and a multicoloured waistcoat to delivered a great set apart from the usual little difficulties with the newer songs. Freedom isn't too bad but seems to suffer from tuning problems and drags in parts as Jimi tries to put across what he was busy putting together in the studio. "Message To Love" gets off to a shakey start but soon pulls together well. "Ezy Ryder" suffers a little from a couple of moments of uncertainty, but it's great to hear it live. Mitch puts in a little drum solo on that one.
On the opening "Fire", we hear Billy Cox sing what used to be Noel's backing vocals. He also tends to overplay his bass lines a little but it comes over well, as does that other Experience showstopper "Foxy Lady".
There are of course the terrific and now legendary versions of "Johnny B. Goode" and "Hear My Train a Comin". Jimi's playing is perhaps his best ever here and this is I feel the best sounding recording there is of him in action. A special effort had been made for the recording, destined for an eventual live album. The two sets were filmed of course and the footage eventually became "Jimi Plays Berkeley".
The set also features excellent performances of "Voodoo Child", "Machine Gun" and "Red House" ("that we've been playing for about 99 000 years" says Jimi).
To make this a single CD release, the superb "Star Spangled Banner"/"Purple Haze" has been left off (if the details I have here are correct). Whatever, this is a great release and it captures Jimi at his best on the last American tour.
