Phil Collins Plays Motown: Montreux Jazz Festival 2010 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

Montreux+Jazz+Festival+affiche_finale_download
OU: This is a rework of the audio added 15-07-10. I've done the following tweaks to improve sound:
- Channels are ballanced by increasing audio in right channel.
- Audience noise is considerably reduced, particularly shouts and claps during songs.
- Added a slight bit of high end to give a slightly sharper sound.
OU Notes on the result: I went through a literal hell to reduce the audience noise on this one - the shouts were not so bad, but the clapping ment A LOT of repetitive small edits (but I guess I have a stubborn nature, once I started, I wanted to go through with it). As others have mentioned, someone in the audience very close to the recorder is quite enthusiastic and shouts and woops a lot, and while the sound is improved a lot in my oppinion, there's only so much you can do. Normally, I try to go for discretion, so that the changes I make as far as possible not are noticable, but that was not really an option here - in order to make this pleasant to listen to, I had to cut down audience shouts a lot, and that means you might notice where I've taken action.
I didn't do much changes to the audio in general, as I think it was a fairly good source (apart from the audience intervention). Apparantly recorder was placed left of center of the stage, which means left channel has a higher recording level of the music. I even this out by increasing volume of right channel - however, as audience sounds was even in both channels, this means audience is now a bit higher in right channel (in case you wondered why). I didn't add compression to the music tracks, because the original master has a pretty good dynamic response, however I did add compression to the parts where Phil talks, because those were barely audible as it were. Also, I've added a fade between My Girl and the Quincy Jones/Claude Nobs talk, because it's virtually impossible to make out what is being said in this part, and hence I preferred to have it optionable whether you want to include this track.
I hope you'll enjoy the result.

A few words about the Stanley Theatre
The Stanley Performing Arts Center opened September 10th, 1928, and has been the premier showplace for Central New York ever since. Thomas Lamb, a prolific theatre architect, designed this 2,945 seats movie palace for the Mastbaum chain of theatres. The theatre was named for Stanley, one of the Mastbaum brothers.
The design of the theatre is dubbed 'Mexican Baroque' because of its unique blend of styles. The terra cotta and tiled mosaic exterior shows the Mexican influence, while Hapsburg lions, Indian faces and a multitude of angels and putti (cherubs) grace the lavish baroque 'gold-leaf' interior of the theatre. The Moorish influence is apparent in the star-splashed ceiling and the twisted columns on each side of the stage.
On a cold November night...
1982 was to be a milestone year in Peter Gabriel's career as a solo artist. The release of his fourth album, still untitled but labeled 'Security' by Geffen records ion North America, had produced Peter's very first US hit with 'Shock The Monkey'. Gabriel and his band started on an extensive tour to promote the album that would include 35 shows in the United States and Canada between October 28th and December 19th.
It was a cold night in Utica that evening, as it always is in Central New York during November, when Peter Gabriel and his band took the stage at the Stanley Theatre for the fifth concert of the tour. Peter used the intimate setting of this theatre to his advantage as he opened the concert with 'Rhythm Of The Heat', he and his bandmates marching up to the stage banging drums from the back lobby of the 'Stanley', clad in Japanese martial arts outfits with kneepads and all. Opening the show from the audience was only the first of a few novelties that Peter had decided to bring forward for this tour. He wore the monkey make-up during 'Shock The Monkey', an effort reminiscent of his Genesis days.
But the most stunning moment of the evening came during 'Lay Your Hands On Me' as Peter came down from the stage to go crowd-surfing in the audience. One who was there comments..."This was surely the highlight of the show as he passed right over me as I sat in the 12th row !..." This daring stunt brought Peter a lot of praise from critics and fans alike.
As he had done on his previous tours, Peter introduced a non-album, brand new track into the setlist, 'John Has A Headache'. This song would never be released officially on any of Peter's albums or singles, so any live recording from that year is quite special because of this fact. After a great presentation of a choice selection of songs from his four albums, Peter will pull one more trick out of his hat as a small hand-held mirror reflects a line of intense white light into the audience during 'San Jacinto', the last song of the concert. Two encores later, Peter and his band take a final bow, leaving an exuberant audience begging for more !
PRRP Staff

Notes from the Re-Master: This was a low volume audience recording. For unexplained reasons the volume for either channel would just drop precipitously for 10-30 seconds on occasion. These problems were corrected. One complete dropout occurred one minute and four seconds into the song ‘I Have the Touch’. This was very brief but to cut it out would have disrupted the tempo of the song in that section. Since there was no signal at all, no other fix –short of patching over it- would have worked. For this reason it was left in its original state.
Hiss was quite significant when the concert volume was amplified and therefore this noise was reduced. The bass was somewhat lacking so this component of the frequency spectrum was boosted. The frequency range was expanded to about 10 kHz from the original 7.5 kHz maximum. Given the acoustics of the auditorium, ambience was quite good and therefore unaltered. Audience applause was understandably loud and therefore reduced in volume when present. The occasional pop was also removed.

Through The Wire
With the release of his ground-breaking third solo album in May 1980, Peter Gabriel firmly began to establish his reputation as a highly innovative solo artist. In
February of that year, before the release of the album, he embarked on a British tour, dubbed the ‘Tour Of China 1984’, showcasing new material and a streamlined, more direct live sound.
At The Apollo in Manchester, Gabriel and his band entered from the rear of the auditorium, arriving on stage to the menacing opening strains of “Intruder”. Alongside Tony Levin on bass and Larry Fast on keyboards was a surprising new recruit – guitarist John Ellis from punk outfit THE VIBRATORS.
It was Ellis’ raw, dry guitar, combined with Jerry Marotta’s dominant, economical drumming, which gave Gabriel’s new live sound much of its harder edge.
This recording, from March 5th 1980, includes several rarely performed songs from Peter Gabriel’s live repertoire at the time. “Milgram’s 37”, given a lengthy explanatory introduction by Gabriel, wouldn’t appear on an album until 1986’s classic “So”, where it was renamed “We Do What We’re Told”. The minimal “Lead A Normal Life” complements “Mother Of Violence” while “Bully For You” (co-written with Tom Robinson, who provided the lyrics for Gabriel’s music) and the ebullient “I Go Swimming” both remain unreleased as studio recordings. “Games Without Frontiers” provided Gabriel with his second solo hit single (following the early success of “Solsbury Hill” in 1977) and it was during this song that he chose to leave the stage and venture into the audience to encourage a sing-along of the “Jeux Sans Frontières” chorus refrain. He had already introduced this move on his first solo tour in 1977 when he appeared unexpectedly among the crowd to sing “Waiting For The Big One”. In later years, of course, he would famously surf the crowd during “Lay Your Hands On Me”.
The anthemic “Biko”, which had been performed live for the first time to such dramatic effect at the previous year’s Reading Festival, was already proving to be a stirring and effective set closer in 1980 and demonstrated Gabriel’s growing interest in Third World politics and human rights issues. This memorable performance in Manchester (complete with duck calls!) was brought to a close by a rousing encore of “On The Air” and a solo rendition of “Here Comes The Flood”.
Incidentally, the support act this night was RANDOM HOLD whose guitarist David Rhodes had already worked on the recording of “Peter Gabriel 3” and would, after this tour, become Gabriel’s longest serving guitarist. He and Tony Levin remain integral members of Peter Gabriel’s touring band to this day.
THE INTRUDER
It is well known by now that the new musical direction begun by “Peter Gabriel 3” and the accompanying tour were not well received by fans and critics at the time. Yet, looking back on it now, it is evident that this radical change was all for the best as it signalled a transition from ‘Gabriel – the ex-Genesis member’ to ‘Gabriel – the solo artist’. Notes from the Re-Master
This recording comes from the master tape, provided by Peter Nicholls. It is generally a good recording with good detail and music signal up to 12,500 Hz. Our taper provided a few suggestions regarding the remaster project, identifying the high hiss level and locations of imperfection within the recording. Hiss was indeed high and was reduced using multiple techniques. Our taper had a friend along to take pictures of the even. We thank this camera man for his work because we used some of his pictures for this project’s artwork. For the audio, however, the camera man was somewhat of a challenge. Standing right next to our taper –and his microphones- many of the camera clicks and camera advances came in loud and clear on the recording. Most of these were manually removed but some could only be reduced in volume because removal would have corrupted the music.
Duck calls and audience noise were both quite loud on the original recording but were reduced in volume in our remastered version here. Given the clarity of the duck calls one must wonder if it is the taper himself with the noise maker in his mouth.
There was a clear asymmetry in signal strength between the two channels that needed to be fixed. A high pitched ring was also present in both the live recording and the interview suggesting that the tape machine itself was the probable cause. This was also removed. In a few spots, Peter’s dialogue with the audience was enhanced so we can hear it better. Over 60 clicks pops and other brief tape artefacts required manual removal along with a few coughs from the taper or his friend. Finally, the detail and crispness of the show was enhanced to better enjoy the cymbals and other high-pitched components of the performance.
The interview section was generally good in quality but, again, also had the high pitched ring that needed remove. Asymmetry in channel balance needed adjustment and the volume of the interview needed to be matched with the performance. Finally, the bass components of the interview section were quite excessive and were reduced.

original notes:
"The Cardiff 1980 recording is a bit of an odd one. It is special because it is one of the very few professional recordings of the "China 1984 Tour" (as the Melt Tour was called officially). However, for a soundboard-recording it has a lot of problems. There's a fair amount of hiss. The first half of the show missed one channel already from the beginning on (this was on the master tape), and the second was in stereo. Also the first half of Moribund is sadly missing. Apart from these flaws, the recording is really muddy and misses clarity.
Still, this recording got my interest. About a year ago I got a complete copy of this gig in a trade. I was happy to find this, because the usual circulating version, The Watcher, was incomplete. What was the most interesting was that one of the previously missing tracks, Moribund the Burgermeister had some great stereo effects during the "I Will Find Out" part. Games without Frontiers, which was missing too on The Watcher featured some nice stereo synths as well. The new complete recording also offered Here Comes the Flood and the band introductions. Another interesting moment that was edited out on The Watcher, was the introduction to Family Snapshot, which was plagued by technical problems.
Sadly, this complete recording was plagued by other flaws: hiss reduction and speed correction were used. Both with bad results: the hiss reduction was so high that all the highs were completely gone, and the speed correction introduced all sorts of clicks/beat-splices/unstabilities.
Later on, I found a new source, which was 2 CD-rs made from a 4th gen. recording. I also got a tape, but this was too hissy to use. I decided to use the 4th gen. as the base of the remaster (see WHAT WAS DONE?).
Back to March 7, 1980. Peter and some members of the band had the flu that night. Peter decided to use a vacuum-machine to get his voice in better shape, which seemed to work to some degree.
The first disc is in mono, but the second disc is in stereo. Some of the synthesizer pads and effects sound wonderful in stereo. Especially Humdrum, and And through the Wire have a nice warmth to them, because of these synths. As said before, Moribund the Burgermeister has a great stereo vocal effect.
This recording is FAR from perfect, but as it as one of the very few professional recordings of the Melt Tour, it has some historical value, and is worth trying out if only for Peter's "I Will Found Out" in Moribund :)

WHAT WAS DONE?
The first part of the recording was in mono. Therefore I used the best channel, with the most high frequencies, which was the left one. I copied this channel to the right one. After that equalization was done. Following to that was multiband-compression, which I used to get some more of the high frequencies, and to keep the hiss at a minimum.
To create 'artificial stereo' I used a trick with phasing which makes a stereo sound out of a mono sound.
Some final equalization was done. Also, the subharmonics were removed, as well as the >16kHz range, which didn't contain any music at all. Since the recording sounded very sterile I added a little bit of reverb (which also helped a little to warm up the sound and get the vocal a little more to the front)
The second part of the recording was in stereo. The process done was basically the same, although I did use both channels of course.
There was a problem with the balance of the two channels. In one channel, the high frequencies and the low frequencies were too low, while the mid range was too high. The opposite happened on the other channel. This was corrected. After that equalization, multiband-compression and final equalization were done, as well as removing the subharmonics and >16kHz-range. Some different values were used during the equalization and the multiband-compression because of the different sound during this part.
There was also a small speed problem on the second part of the show. During Moribund the speed was right but at the end of the disc the speed was about one note too high. This was corrected. Some volume restorations were done. Finally some reverb was added here as well.
A few words of talking after Lead a Normal Life and the first three seconds of Moribund were not on the 4th gen, so I used the above-mentioned 'hiss reducted/speed corrected' to fill this gap.
The Genoa audience recording was used to fill in the gap in Moribund.
There were two gaps inbetween the songs near the end, which were corrected.
Finally, fade-outs were apllied and the recording was normalized. Then the recording was cut-up in tracks, sector-boundary aligned.
