Taper's Comments:
Show description & comments follow: Before I had a VCR, I rigged up a way to record the sound off of my TV. Most TV's during this time frame did not have an audio out feature, so I purchased some sort of "black box" thing that supposedly did something to help you play your TV sound through your stereo. I opened my back cover on my TV, and got a cable with alligator clips, that I attached to each of the inputs to the TV speaker. That ran to the "black box", and then to my cassette deck. Understand that TV sound back then was hardly high fidelity, but it was at least respectable, and worth having. The biggest shortfall in sound was the high end. As a fellow DIMER so aptly pointed out, TV sound only went to around +/- 5,000 Hz then, where most things considered high fidelity were three times that.
This is the late great Rory Gallagher circa "Against The Grain", and he performs four
songs from that album. Enjoy! - bpthree

Freddie King: Dallas 1975 (FM) FLAC

f0
The Incomparable Freddie King (The Texas Cannonball)
Venue: January Sound Studios Dallas, Texas
Date: March 31, 1975
Source: FM Broadcast KZEW 98FM / Soundboard!
Transfer: cassette tape I believe > CD-R from trade > EAC > FLAC Level 8
Sound Quality: A- / B Not bad for 1975. The sound gets better as the show goes on

..."I love the tip, I love the top, I love you better than a hog loves slop
'Cause you're a big legged woman, with a short short miniskirt
Promise me darlin', you'll never make me feel like dirt"...

OU: Up for your consideration is a smokin' hot Freddie King show intimately recorded at January Sound Studios in Big D with at best ten people or less in the audience (recording studios don't normally have huge listening rooms do they?). During my adolescence this top notch rock & roll station (KZEW 98FM - The Zoo) would routinely book various bands to record a set at January Sound. The station did this all time but I can only remember three as I write this: Foghat (recently seeded here), Peter Frampton (an incredible pre-FCA set that I am attempting to track down and post), and the legend Freddie King. I wonder the legal ramifications of doing same here in 2006? I shudder to think...
Most folks who know about Freddie King will tell you that he never played a bad show and this evening was no exception. I'd like to think that it was due to such local guitar aces being in attendance such as Bugs Henderson and Johnny Nitzinger but I know better. Legend has it that Freddie never gave an encore because his shows were so intense they weren't necessary. Now that takes some cajones and you better be able to back it up. Apparently this guy did.
I could write pages about each song but will abstain. I just want everyone who's not familiar with Freddie King to hear and feel the intensity level of this show. Several slight nuances can be heard if you listen in headphones as he does quite a bit of talking away from the mic between songs. What always gets me about this particular evening are his guttural-like moans right before he rips off an incredible lick. More so than anyone else, he and Stevie do that and I truly believe it comes from the heart. It's not a staged bit or something contrived just for the folks in the audience.
I must mention that the Willie Dixon tune 'Early One Morning' is probably the standout song on this collection as I don't believe that he performed it often. It's sung with his longtime bass player and brother, Benny Turner. Again, listen clearly before the song starts and you can hear Freddie not only call out the tune but the key that he wants to play it in (b flat). Then, a few seconds in, after it sounds as if he and Benny quarrel for a moment, Freddie shouts out in jest, "that's a $25 fine!". The best moment however is the guitar lick that comes after the soft vocal intro. Like a sledgehammer to the head, this will take the air right out of you.
As for the recording lineage, I was of the understanding that this came from the actual reel to reel tapes from January Sound Studios as a buddy of mine who used to work at the station 'supposedly' rescued these from the trash can (his exact words). I don't believe this is the case as there are some odd edits towards the end of Come On (Part III). It doesn't render the song unlistenable, I just believe it's consistent with a 90 minute cassette tape at the end of side A.
A huge shout out to a former KZEW employee and friend of mine, Michael Rhyner who turned me on to this show and Freddie King to begin with. Thankfully I received this cd just before my original tape wore out! I've listened to Michael tell me repeated stories of seeing Freddie live and being peppered with his sweat as it got on those in the front row. Intensity anyone?
Again, trust I didn't bore you with my thoughts of another stellar recording from January Sound Studios. Please have fun listening and as always don't convert to MP3 or sell. That's not cool.
Regards, DWP
P.S. Those of you who grew up in Texas like me, enjoy the Lone Star Beer commercial produced long before the era of political correctness!!!

Pink Floyd: Detroit 1975 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

DetroitDiamondsCover
Venue: Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan
Date: June 24th 1975
Title: Detroit Diamonds
Lineage: Aud/Rec1 > 1st gen > CDR > ACL2005 > WAV > EAC > FLAC
Length: 119:47
SQ: EX- (G+ VG- VG VG+ EX- EX EX+ SUP- SUP)

Remaster of recorder1 version called "Detroit 1975", (NOT CSP remaster). The 1st gen versions of this recorder have quite strong SQ but had numerous issues that needed attention. I liked the performance of this show and felt it deserved the attention.
Approximately 4 mins of repeated segments at the ending and beginning of many tracks. Many digi-pops, clicks, mic thumps and some tape flips etc. Also a high frequency buzz that was prominent in about half the recording along with suttle level and SQ changes throughout.
I was able to get many good isolated buzz samples to address the segments that contained background buzz. A diminished buzz is now prevalent only during quiet sections, eg Speak To Me, Us and Them. No NR used on buzz free segments. There are no traces of NR.
Eliminated or reduced most of the digi-pops/clicks and mic thumps and smoothed tape flips.
Also segmented the show into several dozen relavent sections in order to apply different amounts of EQ, output levels, and buzz reduction.
Kept Dark Side Of The Moon together on Disc 2. Created artwork with track listing and times.
Although, as usual, it took much longer than I originally thought, IMO it was worth it. It has good editing, output level, and SQ continuity now and sounds clearer and warmer than "Experimental Energy"

Neonknight's Notes: It would be great if the second half of this show were to surface as the taper did a nice job with what must have been some very good recording equipment. I haven't seen a tape of this date with known lineage. With thanks to Kbrubaker who sent me this cassette along with many others to work on.

Littlepieces' Mastering Notes: This is a mono recording that was dubbed as two channel stereo as is often the case. Due to the previous transfers/dubs with less than perfect azimuth (head alignment), the recording has a phase shift that varies from 7-15 samples. I manually aligned the channels to improve the phasing.
The speed of this recording varied between correct and within ~1% fast so I decided not to subject it to a resample. Other than removing some dead air between tracks, nothing else was done to this recording.
This tape has the end of SoYCD pt6-9 that it is missing on some sources.

OU Comments: Picked this up from a small CD store in Chappaqua, NY in 1995 or so. Odd packaging (see the scans the photos). Odd Artwork with a weird poster (also scanned). Audio is oddly tracked and sped up a few pitches. ---Just a weird product altogether--- For completists I guess. The audio is in need of a re-master to slow it down. Thanks.

OU Comments: One of those rare hot summer nights for the Pink Floyd. Echoes is jazzy, even funky a bit at the beginning too. Dave laughs but doesn't screw up.
Performance wise this is easily in the top 3 for 1975, and soundwise it's up there with Boston and the rest (maybe not quite L.A.). So this might just be your best bet for a good 75 show. Dark Side is well performed too. A beauty from 1975

Renaissance: Hempstead 1975 (VG- Aud) FLAC

The Lostbrook Tape Series - Volume 110
RENAISSANCE 1975-11-21-ins-fr
For our final Renaissance release of the series, we present my first Renaissance capture. Since this was my third overall attempt at recording, I made a few rookie mistakes. I only brought one 90-minute tape with me and consequently missed the
final eight minutes of "Ashes Are Burning." I also wanted to keep my hands free and hadn't yet discovered that I needed to hold the recorder as high as possible. There are a few muffled moments when I kept the recorder flat on my lap and may have
accidentally covered the mic with my coat. At one point, I even put the recorder on the floor. When I listen to this tape and hear the seat creak, it says to me, "You idiot! You idiot!" All things considered, it's a decent capture of a 1975 Renaissance concert with a beautiful, complete "Scheherazade."

Elvis Presley: Shreveport 1975 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

cd
Shreveport '75
Label: Touchdown Productions
Type: Live Audience Recording
Location: Shreveport, Louisiana
Date: 7 June 1977 AS
Release Date: 2011

Promotional note from Touchdown Productions: Promotion note: TOUCHDOWN Productions proudly presents their next release, which will be the afternoon show from Shreveport, Louisiana on June 7, 1975. The King delivered a very good show with lots of highlights. The sound is of very good quality for this kind of recordings.

Comment from elvisoncd.com: A very good show from a very good tour. Elvis delivered a fine performance and he really enjoyed his time on stage. The crowd went crazy and a little move from his finger made the walls tremble. However, the show wasn`t recorded in its entirety here: American Trilogy and Let Me Be There are missing after How Great Thou Art. The little cut there indicates this fact. A complete tape does exist. (Ciscoking)

During the second half of 1975, GONG was in a transition phase: Daevid Allen had left the group, and Steve Hillage was seen as the new leader of the band, true to the spirit of its founder and its Pot Head Pixies . However, Gong was already moving towards a more instrumental music and a sophisticated jazz-rock. Many new songs were created on stage during these few months, but when it came to record them for the album Shamal, Steve Hillage had decided to quit.
This is what makes live recordings of this short pre-Shamal period with Hillage all the more fascinating.

La Celle St Cloud, France, June 1975: With a line up including keyboardist Dave Stewart (ex Hatfield and the North) who remained in the group only a week, and drummer Brian Davison (ex Nice), who stayed only six months, this recording is a rare document, sadly incomplete.
Of other interest is an embryonic version of Cat in Clark's shoes, very different from the one eventually recorded for the album Shamal, and an abridged version of Solar Musick Suite.
technically speaking, this is a soundboard recording (sadly incomplete) with excellent sound. I only removed some hiss, and did a bit of equalization.
The concert at the Marquee in London in September 1975: The three concerts at the Marquee 8, 9 and 10 September were professionally recorded and excerpts were released on the album "Live Etc.". The concert presented here is not complete: at the end of the show, "The Salmon Song" was originally segued with "Master builder" which is missing here.
At the Celle St Cloud concert from June, it was "The Salmon Song" (missing) which started the concert, followed by "Master Builder".
So we restored the segue between these two pieces, as they were originally played, even if they are from different sources. So much for the chronology : on the CD, the September concert is presented prior to the June concert.
Of interest is an early version of Bambooji, and the rarely played 6/8 theme at the conclusion of Oily way, instead of the traditional Outer Temple / Inner Temple suite.
Problems that had to be corrected with this show:
The original recording had a lot of hiss, which thankfully could be easily filtered out. The mix for "Oily way" was hardly listenable, vocals being very prominent. This problem was corrected with EQ. Some other mix problems with vocals and guitar on "Solar Musick Suite" were treated as best as possible. A cut at 15'55 in "Solar Musick Suite" has been repaired, and is now undetectable. Singing in Wingful of eyes is almost inaudible, but there was nothing I can do to solve the problem.

The Guilford concert, November 1975: This concert is a rare document too, in many ways.
- Pierre Moerlen, absent because of multiple musical activities is replaced exceptionally by Laurie Allan.
- The band plays a lot of pieces not yet released on album. In addition to the future Shamal titles, they play an early version of "Lunar Musick Suite and "Electrick Gypsies", which would be later recorded by Steve Hillage for his solo album "L" in 1976. This first version played by Gong is quite exceptional.
- Similarly, the song "I'm Beginning to See The Light" played here, remains unreleased to this day.
- The isle of everywhere is not completed by the theme "get it inner" as was the case for all other Gong concerts from this period (including the officially released "Live at Sherwood Forest" recorded November 25, 1975)
- Finally, we note the presence of an unusual riff in "Shamal", which Steve Hillage would later use for "Searching for the Spark" in 1977.

Problems that had to be corrected with this tape:
A lot of hiss, once again easily filtered out. Re-equalization necessary to boost the treble and reduce the bass, very upfront on the original recording. A huge number of digital clicks have been removed using a software used for cleaning of vinyl crackles. Many cuts in the following tracks were repaired "properly" : Lunar Musick Suite (at 7'45), I'm Beginning to see the light (at 4'03), Isle of Everywhere (at 0'02 and 6'51), Wingful of Eyes (at 2'22) A duplicated section in the introduction of Bambooji was removed (which means that this piece was too long of about 2 minutes in the original file).

All the recordings are soundboards. Sound quality is very high throughout.
The Marquee and Guiford show were remastered from a lossless source (Flac).

Fleetwood Mac: Passaic 1975 (Pre-FM) FLAC

reupped and expanded access by request
Copy of fm1975-06-07KBFH cover
King Biscuit Flower Hour (KBFH Radio Show / Pre-FM Source)
Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ June 7, 1975

The album presented here is a live recording from the 1975 first tour by the new line-up, and is the source for the 1990's CD distributed by King Biscuit Flower Hour for broadcast by radio stations in the US. As they had not yet established themselves let alone reached the mega-stardom that came with their next album 'Rumours', the band plays a mixture of songs from the current album, which was also entitled 'Fleetwood Mac', and from earlier line-ups, as well as one from the 'Buckingham Nicks' album. There is no adverts and announcer breaks that were built in to the KBFH CD so this version plays as an uninterrupted live album.

OU: In 1975 a bunch of friends from and around Ferrara (Italy) got the news about a gig from the progressive band AREA.... so they took all his bicycles ( thery were so young and so without money) and went to the palce,...someone make a 20 KM trip to it.
But one of the guys was so smart to bring woth him his new brandly PHILIPS N2204,,,,
and he recorded what can be put inside a C-60 tape.
In 2011 AREA reformed and did a gig in Ferrara, all they guys re-joyned the gig and this tape was lent to me to be spreaded along the globe, for the first time ever. So enjoy this recording ( BTW is very clear, tape was good quality) and say THANX to this bunch of frendly Italian guys! ciao, LONGJAM
