Mahavishnu Orchestra: Boston 1972 (FM) FLAC

1972
Symphony Hall - Boston, Mass. - January 26, 1972
(opener for Howard wales/Jerry Garcia Hooteroll)

John Mclaughlin: guitar
Jan Hammer: keyboards
Jerry Goodman: violin
Rick Laird: bass
Billy Cobham: drums

1: Tuning 1:24
2: Meeting Of The Spirits > 10:51
3: You Know, You Know 8:57
4: Radio Announcer :09
5: Band Introductions :19
6: The Dance Of Maya 10:34
7: Radio Announcer :09
8: Dawn 15:21
9: Binkie's Beam 3:53
10: The Noonward Race 11:45
runtime: 63:43

various cassette sources > WAV > flac.
source: 3 source FM matrix: tracks 1-3, source 1, which has some static in parts but never very loud or long lasting. This is a 2nd gen. tape.
The rest is from 1st gen. (different master source) and sounds as good as I've ever heard this show sound, but it also has some static. The fidelity is quite good for a Jan. 72 FM recording, with great seperation of left and right, but WBCN was hardly the megawatt giant it has been since circa early 80's.
The third source (unknown) only provides a few seconds of this recording, filling in
just a few seconds of talk after Dawn when John mentions he broke a string and we'll be right back, at which point they cut away to a commercial, and cut back in after John mentions Jan Hammer, just as he says "he's from Czeckoslovakia".
I have cut out all the commercials, and left all the music and talk in here.
The 3rd source is not as good as the other two, fortunately it's just barely long enough to notice it, and there strictly to maintain the continuity of the recording.

first seeded in 2009. reseeded in 2011 with a flac > wav > flac (sb's aligned)reconversion to remove the sbe's. A this and that production. Do not sell this recording. share the spirits freely, losslessly and gaplessly.

OU comments: This show is so early I hadn't heard of Mahavishnu Orchestra yet then, and did not hear this broadcast. This may be the 1st Boston Maha. show, although I suspect they may have done a show in late 71 at Jazz Workshop or somewhere else. Just
a few months later, Maha. was touring almost constantly and played at least 2 more
Boston shows in 1972. this is definitely the earliest 72 Boston Maha. show I know of, the start of a very fiery relationship (in a good way) and still featuring the music of "Inner Mounting Flame" which is a good description of this band's career.
Even this early on, the flame was burning brightly, but you can tell it's an early
Maha. show. It may also be the best version out there, since I've heard a few in
varying quality and I'm sharing the best one I could put together. Folks have said
they want more Maha. So if anyone out there has more original (or Apocalypse tour)
Maha. please post it. The 1st rock band I ever heard with a violin in it was this one, Ponty came a few years later for me (since I didn't see him until 1976.)

Mahavishnu Orchestra: Cleveland 1972 (Soundboard) FLAC

72_Wild strings_f
"WILD STRINGS" Live in Cleveland, 1972

Liberated Japanese boot on Firepower label, FP-9046 -- speed was approx 2.7% too slow, amended with Adobe Audition

1: Meeting of the Spirits
2: You know you know
3: The Dance of Maya
4: The Noonward Race

ADDITIONAL INFO: Here is some additional info I (OU) have gathered from reliable sources who know more about this gig.
The show took place at the Emerson Gynamsium of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. The actual date for the show was April 21st, 1972
The concert billing was:
West Bruce and Laing
Procol Harum and
Mahavishnu Orchestra (as the opening act -- imagine that!)

Also, this is the show that John McLaughlin tried to convince CBS to release officially and we all know where that went...sad! Hopefully someday CBS will open their vaults and release the complete show! Please help support the artists by buying their officially released music!

Mahavishnu Orchestra: SUNY 1972 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

Mahavishnu_Orchestra_1974-05-06_f
SUNY New Paltz Master AUD (Mahavishnu Masters Flood) - Amazing, incredible set
The boys are flying, in the stratosphere on this one! This is one great show.
During 1972-3, a local-area Northeast taper recorded five concerts of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and one of the McLaughlin-Santana Band. Here is the fourth of those concerts.

OU: Here's an excerpt of the notes I received with these shows: The digital transfer was done in the early 2000s using Goldwave to eliminate camera clicks, long periods of silence, and the occasional cough, as well as to smooth transitions. Before playing the tapes into his PC, the taper opened the cassette shells and transferred the tape spools into fresh cassette shells. The recordings were originally archived on CDR as APE files (a now rarely used lossless compression software). They were later de-compressed back to WAV and then re-compressed into their current FLAC format.
I hope you enjoy these fine performances.

Setlist (runtime about 69 mins)
Birds Of Fire
Open Country Joy
Dream
Miles Beyond
One Word

Lineage: (unknown portable cassette player w/plug in mic to MC ->Goldwave ->APE ->WAV ->FLAC ->Sound Forge ->14.5 cent speed correction ->Channel conversion (phase-shifted mono to true mono to true mono two-channel) ->FLAC via TLH, level 6, sectors aligned and verified. FLAC integrity verified, SBE's OK, Losslessness (great word there) verified within Sound Forge.
