online reviews:
- While The Establishment Burns - Sharper, more detailed sound for Dublin than anything out previously; a much more straightforward performance with Dylan completely focused on each tune immediately upon completing the one before. The "Rolling Stone" from Edinburgh may be the highlight of the set, 8 minutes of rock and roll heaven. Dylan's phrasing is sublime and his furious vocals are something to behold.

- A Nightly Ritual - The Liverpool electric set is stunning stuff, dominated by Dylan's bold vocals and Robbie Robertson's razor-edge guitar fills. Sheffield is an absolutely gorgeous recording, so full and richly toned it will leave you stunned. Dylan's performance goes from ridiculously phenomenal to sublime; he nails every tune and his harp playing is brilliant. A brilliant performance in astounding sound quality.

Muddy Waters and his Bluesband: Cambridge 1966 (Soundboard) FLAC

folder
Club 47, Cambridge, MA., Aug. 24th 1966 2nd Gen. sbd

OU: Here´s my favorite tape from Muddy Waters and his Bluesband: Cambridge, MA. Club 47 Aug.24.1966 - A real wild and hot performance by Muddy and his Allstar Band, feat., among others:
-- Otis Spann, one of my alltime favorites in Blues! His piano playing and singing is outstanding in this performance, as usual! He even managed to add a nice new dimension to "Johnny B. Goode " played in this performance! He was with Muddy since the midfifties.............
--- George " Harmonica" Smith - One of the great harp players in Blues! He released some superp albums in the late sixties, probably his best on " Blue Horizon" Label, w/ a white US Blues Band called " Beacon Fat" ("Grease one for me"), and also a solo album w/Beacon Fat as side man ("No time for Jive").
Rod Piazza, one of the great white harp players, was a member of "Beacon Fat"!

This recording is the only docomented complete sixties performance, of one of the usual shows, Muddy Waters played these days, as far as I know! A rare chance to recognize, how things happened in the 60´s. Muddy played only on about half of the tracks , his Bandmates fronted their solo stuff on the other half of the performance.....

Notes: Although this tape is usually traded as a sbd, it was recorded, in my opinion, w/ 2 mics hangin´over the stage!
So the overall sound is a mixture between sbd and great audience and very listenable!
Some mixin´ probs in the beginning, which soon were fixed! A very unusual performance with some incredible playing by the boys, not the usual live stuff, but great!

The Wh?: Stockholm 1966 (G- Aud) FLAC

the who - 1966
art by dave
Club Nalen, Stockholm, Sweden - 25 October 1966
Cassette -> Remastered (GoldWave) -> CDR -> FLAC (Frontend)

OU: A fair (sounds like shit), almost complete audience recording--more than acceptable for 1966.
A short, but sweet performance from the 'A Quick One' era. Townshend can be heard playing 12-string on a few tunes and they run through the set with almost no pause between numbers. One of the greatest Who bootlegs, truly a gem.

1. Heatwave (cuts in)
2. Dancing in the Streets
3. Barbara Ann
4. So Sad About Us
5. Substitute
6. The Kids Are Alright
7. I’m a Boy
8. My Generation

This is the oldest Stones show I have in my collection, it's been in heavy rotation in my stereo the past few days, I thought that maybe everyone here might enjoy it. The show was presented by the radio station K-Poi in Hawaii, I don't know that much about Stones bootlegs, so if anyone has more detailed info about the show, I greatly appreciate their help.
I had a friend who got to see the Stones play the first show at the International Center in 73, the infamous " In Exotic Honolulu" performance.
The sound quality is amazing for a 66 show, I'm amazed how clear it is, sounds like it was taped very close to the stage.
Cheers!

John Coltrane Quintet: Kobe 1966 (Completely Revised VG/VG+ Aud) FLAC

46c8b9e3281498915a826ff26f81e608
TRANE KOBE '66 COMPLETE! SOUND (VERY MUCH) IMPROVED! MANDATORY DOWNLOAD!
OU: One of the best Naima version EVER! Garrison solo is really good and has a really good sound! After some 200 (but more likely more) hours of work I am honored and proud to offer to you all this great concert!

16a - MFT - Piano solo shortened 00:51
20a - Leo - Piano solo shortened 01:20

There' s no interuption between MFt and Leo they were played continuously! Thanks to Flambay (Cristian Reichert) who did the speed correction, especially on the tracks that needed variable pitch adjustments (tracks 06-07-11).
Sound Quality from C+ to B- see below for a more detailed analysis track by track

Lineage > 2 dime torrents > Audacity (high pass filter (default value) - normalizing - noise cutting ) > TLH (sbe- flac)

Reportedly recorded under the recordists chair. some foot tapping is evident. this tape is complete and unedited. NOTE: as with all other circulating copies, indeed the master, there are many speed fluctuations and overall it is a very flawed tape.
That said, Naima is beautiful, and MFT is the longest known version from the tour.
very OUT! We are lucky to have this.
enjoy!

Thelonious Monk Quartet: 2 FM Shows from 1966-1967 (FLAC)

25880
Newport Jazz Festival
Newport, RI - July 2, 1966

lineage: FM? > ? > flac on DVD in trade > Easy DC-DA Extractor
The sound on this one is in the A- range, generally very clear, but a bit hissy in the quieter parts.

01. Evidence (11:32)
02. Light Blue (10:49)
03. Japanese Folk Song [Kojo No Tsuki] (10:08)

NOTE: The Monk discography at www.jazzdisco.org lists this date (with a somewhat different track listing) as "Blue Monk" (Black Lion (J) 32JDB 137). However, extensive research has not shown any evidence that such an album was released. The "London Sessions" (all from 1971) appear to be the only Monk releases on Black Lion. In addition, Mosaic's "The Complete Black Lion and Vogue Recordings of Thelonious Monk" does not include this set.

Lineup:
Thelonius Monk - Piano
Charlie Rouse - Tenor Sax
Larry Gales - Bass
Ben Riley - Drums

+++
Liederhalle
Mainz, Germany
November 8, 1967

lineage: FM recording > ? > flac on DVD in trade
Solid sound here, given the age of the recording. Definitely in the A- range.

01 intro
[2:31]
02 Ruby My Dear (quartet) [7:07]
03 Don't Blame Me (solo piano) [5:03]
04 Rhythm-a-ning (C.Terry - trumpet) [4:46]
xx I Mean You / Theme (nonet) [officially released*]
05 Straight, No Chaser
[9:11]
06 Evidence
[18:08]
07 Oska.T [18:13]

*Released in a 4:16 version on "Straight No Chaser" (the movie soundtrack album - Columbia CK 45358). Sheriden notes that "this was spliced from several sources, including an on-tour rehearsal, being drawn from the Charlotte Zwerin/Bruce Ricker film documentary, "Straight No Chaser."
The version I have is 24:27 and the real gem of this show, as all members of the nonet take solos. I have no means of splicing out the officially released portions, and I am thus unable to upload them. This seems pretty rare, since the 4:16 version of I Mean You is the only portion of this concert catalogued by Sheridan.

Lineup:
Thelonius Monk - Piano
Charlie Rouse - Tenor Sax
Ray Copeland - Trumpet
Johnny Griffin - Tenor Sax
Jimmy Cleveland - Trombone
Phil Woods - Alto Sax
Clark Terry - Trumpet
Larry Gales - Bass
Ben Riley - Drums

Architectural Abdabs (Pink Floyd): 1966 (Acetate Source) shn

cd_scan_small
Roger Waters left Cambridge in 1962 to study architecture at the Regent Street Polytechnic in London. There he met fellow student Nick Mason. In 1963 they both joined the existing group, Sigma 6.
Sigma 6 was also known as the Megadeaths (or Meggadeaths), Leonard's Lodgers, The Tea Set (or The T-Set), The Abdabs, The Architectural Abdabs, and The Screaming Abdabs.
As The Tea Set, their personnel consisted of guitarists Rado "Bob" Klose and Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason, and pianist Richard Wright. After a brief stint with a lead vocalist named Chris Dennis, blues and folk guitarist and vocalist Syd Barrett joined the band. Waters then moved to bass and Wright to full time keyboards.
This mini CD contains a CD with 2 tracks by the Architectural Abdabs (early incarnation of Pink Floyd) and is originally released in 1966.
One is a cover of a track called "I'm A King Bee" the other is a Syd composition entitled "Lucy Leave"; both feature Syd on guitar and vocals.
Also, it's worth noting that the sound quality is pretty good considering the tracks were copied from the original acetate pressing.
Comes in a plain white slipcase with a 120 page book entitled "Syd Barrett - A Fish Out Of Water" (adapted from wikipedia).

01. King Bee
02. Lucy Leave

Encoded to Wav and then to .shn from the original mini-cd Architectural Abdabs, from the book "Fish out of water"

The Velvet Underground And Nico: The Norman Dolph Acetate 1966

Norman-Dolph-Acetate-(Front)-792508
Unripened - The Norman Dolph Acetate (2007)
Cue, Log, m3u, md5, st5, ffp
complete Artwork 300 dpi
The bulk of the songs that would become The Velvet Underground & Nico were recorded in mid-April, 1966, during a four-day stint at Scepter Studios, a decrepit recording studio in New York City. This recording session was financed by Warhol and Columbia Records' sales executive Norman Dolph, who also acted as an engineer with John Licata. Though exact total cost of the project is unknown, estimates vary from $1500 to $3000
Actual recording at Scepter was done rather quickly in about two business days (roughly 8-10 hours) while the third was spent listening to the material and the fourth was spent mixing. Soon after, Dolph sent an acetate disc of the recordings to Columbia in an attempt to interest them in distributing the album, but they declined, as did Atlantic Records and Elektra Records. Eventually, the MGM Records-owned Verve Records accepted the recordings with the help of Verve staff producer Tom Wilson, who had recently moved from a job at Columbia.

Scepter Studios acetate version
Norman Dolph's original acetate pressing of the Scepter Studios material contains several recordings that would make it onto the final album, though many are different mixes of those recordings and three are different takes entirely.
The acetate was pressed on April 25, 1966, shortly after the recording sessions. It would resurface decades later when it was bought by collector Warren Hill of Montreal, Canada in September 2002 at a flea market in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City for $0.75. Hill put the album up for auction on eBay in November. On December 8, 2006, a winning bid for $155,401 was placed, but not honored. The album was again placed for auction on eBay and was successfully sold on December 16, 2006 for $25,200.
It is important to note that ten songs were recorded during the Scepter sessions and only nine appear on the acetate cut. Dolph recalls "There She Goes Again" being the missing song (and, indeed, the version of "There She Goes Again" that appears on the final LP is attributed to the Scepter Studios session).
Though rumors have circulated concerning an eventual official release of this version of the album, this has yet to be confirmed or announced by any major record label.
However, a ripped version of the acetate began circulating the internet in January 2007. Bootleg versions of the acetate tracks have also become available on vinyl and CD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Velvet_Underground_and_Nico

Beetles: Interview 1966 for Print article *ALL 4 BEATLES TALK* (Pre-FM) FLAC

beatles-mug
This next offering is an open reel tape recording of all 4 Beatles together in March of 1966 from "Radio Caroline"?? talking about EVERYTHING!!!
Paul is still with Jane Asher and won't comment on possible engagement plans with her. They keep asking though and he is holding firm.
This guys asks them all when they first had sex.... he is good and having fun with this.
Does Ringo change Zakk's nappies?
They are planning to record, and I might assume that the tour is over. But it might be over by this time. They do sound a little stoned and they are having fun.
This is a VERY CLEAN recording and is wonderful. This journalist is so much better than so many of the idiots that had the opportunity to talk to the Beatles. I hope you enjoy this rare little gem!! And it is REALLY FUNNY!!!
The Facts:
Lineage: Open Reel Tape > ? > Silver CD > EAC > FLAC 8 > you
Interview runs 21 mins and was taped at "The Captains Kitchen?" for the "Music Disc" paper. At least that is what they say at the start. There are many words spoken about "Radio Coroline", and a bumber at the end of the recording. They could after all be in Abbey Road and the whole "Beatles being in the radio studio" could be all these radio guys could get. I have not listened to this all the way through and there might be a clue as to where they really are!!
This is short, but where are you going to find a 1966 interview with all 4 Beatles??

The tenth and penultimate volume in our overview of The Beatles’ live career brings us their brief 1966 World Tour and the end of the Beatles caring much about their performances. Still, the Munich and Tokyo shows are the last to survive in soundboard quality.
The unbooted Hamburg tracks are taken from a German radio broadcast. We’re very grateful they made their way to us.
The Disc One bonus tracks are a little unnecessary, since Track 33 is much longer than anything available previously. But the snippets are maybe a little better quality, so it’s all here, just in case you care.
Note: We used two similarly titled “Bravo Beatles” sources – one issued by MBE, and one by Misterclaudel (notated with an ‘(MC’).
As always, Purple Chick discs are fan created and NEVER FOR SALE!!!

And so to the conclusion of The Beatles as a performing group (although some might argue the end really came a year or more earlier) – all the circulating shows from their final tour of the U.S.A.
While this may be a delight for completists, the last show at San Francisco is the only decent sounding recording here (and not such a bad performance either, relatively speaking). Also of note is the 'cherry bomb' explosion heard halfway through "If I Needed Someone" from the Memphis evening show. Otherwise it's slim pickings, pop pickers.
We've done our best to make everything sound as good as possible - speed correction, a little eq, and more (but never any compression or noise reduction!) We even used a source for the San Francisco show without the digital reverb appearing on most releases of this concert.
It's not all that pretty, but this is it – the end of The Beatles live. (Unless you count the Rooftop Concert – and that's on A/B Road if you still need to find it!)

The Beetles: Live at Budokan 1966 (Soundboard) FLAC

front
THE BEATLES
AT BUDOKAN JUNE 30, 1966
Laserdisc Transfer

Lineage: Laserdisc > digital sound card > .aiff > .wav > data CD > CD Wave > TLH > FLAC > you

In 2003, a collector in Texas, with whom I had traded by mail for several years (since before CD-Rs), made me a digital transfer of the audio portion of the Japanese laserdisc of The Beatles At Budokan. He used a Mac for recording, and this is an unaltered transfer from the LD. It's the best sound source for this concert that you'll ever hear! I opened the .wav file in CD Wave to split tracks on sector boundaries, and converted it to FLAC. This show has still never been released anywhere but in Japan, on laserdisc, and even that release was recalled. There has been no DVD release so far, and we don't expect to see one. Enjoy!

2. Rock And Roll Music

Quicksilver Messenger Service: Earliest Known Soundboard Recording 1966 (FLAC)

Matrix poster
This may be the earliest known live performance of the Quicksilver Messenger Service. It does not appear to be circulating. I transferred it from a cheap 1980s cassette which was labeled as The Matrix, SF, mid '66. I was able to find information on the Internet which narrows the date down to August 9-10, 1966. I don't know which date this is, and there are several cuts in the tape, so it could be from both dates. Since there are no duplicate songs, I assume it's all from one night, possibly multiple sets.
Interesting to me, and possibly confirming this as an early show, are the lyrics to track 14. "Hair Like Sunshine" is on several other Quicksilver recordings, but on this one, the lyrics are completely different for the first part of the song: no Hair Like Sunshine, for example. The second part of the song is as usual. Track 2 is also unique as far as I know, and I'm not sure of the title. The source tape had tracks 7-16 as Side A and tracks 1-6 as Side B but I switched them; seems more correct with the incomplete Mona at the end. Tracks 1-6 sound slightly better too.

Recording quality is listenable but not great. This is a very primitive stereo soundboard tape.
