A few words of thanks…

A few posts of thanks…

A few final words of thanks… A few posts to thank all those bands out there that delivered all that awesome heavy music in 2019. We loved so much of it! It shows in the many different lists that were sent in for the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown. And not just that, it shows on the Doom Charts and on the personal lists that were posted on the HiVe and the Doom Charts. And ofcourse on all the personal pages of the Doom Charts Contributors; and those are many. Thanks to all that voted for the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown. Without you crazy music fiends the Countdown would not work and the heavy music scene would not be this alive! Many thanks! Keep your ears on that rumbling bass and those pounding drums; it will show you the way to those almighty riffs and majestic grooves!

Thanks to everyone out there who were involved with heavy music. Either by listening, making or voting for it. It is once again staggering to think about the sheer encompassing amount of great music! I’ve scrobbled 2004 albums. That’s digital scrobbles. Not counting vinyl or cd’s. Or those that were labelled wrong and did not scrobble at all. And I know the members of the Stoner HiVe Team have listened to a lot of different albums among themselves. And yes, I know there are still many on my to listen to list. There are many in the Stoner HiVe inbox and there are many on the different listening platforms provided by the record companies that are still waiting to be heard… Some of which  we will get to before January is over… There is just so much!

Thanks to all the Doom Chart Contributors, all wise in their own ways and all doing what they do for the pure love of it. Nobody is making one cent for doing this. It’s fuel is the love of the heavy stuff and the reward is seeing somebody finding an album they love because of that. And thanks to the Stoner HiVe Team. Doktor420 for remaining that immovable stalwart of stoner and space rock. He is very reluctant to do any writing for the HiVe but will forever be the original guru and has without a doubt the best ear for the unknown stoner, space, psych and kraut. Madman Tony Maim, has fired up his own Black Insect Laughter to some degree, giving us an insight to the monthly ruckus he listened to. Yes! He is there went you need a rant or two and he knows where to find the good punk, the great thrash and the lovely hardcore. We love the occasional and unprovoked burst of madness entering the HiVe inbox about a new album. And hope he will continue to do so. Reek of STOOM joined the team almost exactly a year ago! And has since then quickly climbed up to fill a void in all the sludge, doom and grime genres within the HiVe as well as the Doom Charts and Doomed and Stoned. A prolific listener that is unrivaled in the amount he listens to as well as the quality of his writing. And last addition Kyle aka Shastabeast. With us since September, the man seems to love the fuzz, the scruffy riffs and the dirty grooves as much as the doom of yore and the sludge of tomorrow. And if there is one animal that can find even more unknown heavy stoner gold than featured on the blogs, it’s Shastabeast

Thanks to you all for doing what you do and helping the HiVe give more attention to more bands! And because of that, we shall try to give a little bit of attention to some of that awesome stuff we missed during 2019 before normal broadcasting service shall commence… So, the next two weeks will be filled with posts featuring stuff that was released in 2019… After that we look forward and onwards, cause 20 20 is upon us! Thank you all! Let’s stay heavy!

JK’s – Personal Top 20 (errr, Top 30)

What a year it has been once again. Rock has been declared dead so many times. Or declared a Titan Arum that bloomed for the last time around the seventies an equal amount of times. But it seems the heavy side of rock just keeps on blooming. It’s just different nowadays! Because of the internet or perhaps thanks to the internet. There are so many outlets to find the music to suit your exact taste. I personally just hope that all you crazy music fiends out there keep on trying out the other stuff as well. Cause we can all get swamped in our own little niche of danceable stoner pop, blackened doom or grimy garage sludge. But there are so many amazing album being released on a monthly basis. It is stupendous, insane and absolutely stunning. Below follows a list of thirty albums that did a lot for me on many levels. But I can just as easily name twenty or fifty more that also did a lot for me. And that’s just the heavy stuff. Looking at the thirty I sent in; I’m thinking: ‘what the hell?!’ How can you leave off Nightstalker? Or Lunar Effect? Or Ealdor Bealu? Solace? Horseburner? Emily Jane White? Or those two amazing records that were released at the very end of December 2018: Pfund and Son Cesano? It feels wrong, and it feels like I should revise the entire list again. Or even just include them all. All of the ones that I love. Well, I guess I just loved the thirty below just a tiny, almost unmeasurable, amount more. Upwards and Onwards in 2020! Let’s get heavy once again! ~ Joop

The Bottom Dwellers 10 of 2019!

The Bottom Dwellers 10 of 2019!

We used to be able to do a Red Lantern post about the albums from the year that passed. It entailed the album or albums that got voted for once; and only once and only on the 20th position of a sent in list. But that hasn’t been possible every year. Due to the fact that not every lists has 20 albums on it. Some have less some have more. And for some reason, every one of those lists sent in, with exactly 20 albums on it, had an album on that 20th position, which got voted for more times. So, since we wish to mention a few of those albums that had a very limited amount of votes, we invented the Bottom Dwellers post. Albums that ended up at the very bottom of the list. Which means they were still damn freaking good! Cause they got voted for! But perhaps a bit off center to the  normal HiVe heaviness. Perhaps a bit more metal? Or pop? Or punk? But it still means they are featured on a small list of only 403 albums. And to think that among the HiVe Team Members only around 3500 heavy albums were heard in 2019. And we all know there are even more out there! More great records to be discovered! Which we shall continue to do! Damn, how we love this heavy stuff! Go check out the Bottom Dwellers 10 from 2019! Who knows, it might just feature your new favorite one!

Onwards and Upwards in 2020 !

Onwards and Upwards in 2020 !

As promised a little more data and stuff about the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2019. In the end 93 of the 95 lists that you lovely freaks sent in were counted. One came in a few days too late and one was sent when the Top 20 already entered the Top 10, unfortunately. The amount of albums voted for was no less than 403 albums. There were quite a few lists that came in that listed only one to three or five albums. Below we feature the Number 21 to 100, with Dommengang and their amazing No Keys album missing exactly 10 points to make it to the Top 20. And Ole English by Ole English missing almost 200 points to do the same thing. To be fair, below are the albums listed at Number 21 to 100 but a lot of those album gathered the same amount of votes. If we would really move to the 100th position down the list according to points we would end up with an extra list of  32 albums, which would give us VVLVA with their Silhouettes album at the 100th spot. But we’re sticking with the list below. And marvel at the amount of amazing freaking heavy music release this year! Once again! It’s a good time to be alive for us heavy rock fiends!

Number 1

Number 1

There can be only one. And to reach the Gold Medal, the Number One album according to all you heavy music fiends that decided to send their list to the Stoner HiVe for this Top 20 Countdown of 2019, we jump almost 85 points from Hippie Death Cult on Number 2. Yes, we arrive at an album that is without any doubt considered the absolute favorite for all you lovely freaks out there. Sure, there were a few others that were high on the list when the first bunch of votes were tallied, but then when the amount of lists got bigger, it quickly rose to the top and never let go of its position. So, we can safely state that this album moved all of you out there to the core. We thank all of those voters once again, without you this would not be possible and it would not be this much fun to do. We also thank all those bands that made the Top 20 with all of those amazing albums! But we also thank the bands that did not make it; cause there is beauty on all of them! And like every year, we will list the 21 to 100 in the next few days somewhere. So, at least a few of those albums will get a little more attention; even though they probably deserve even more. But even though it was obvious from the picture above, we still need to say a few words about the Number 1 album of 2019. Released through Kozmik Artifactz around March of last year; the album quickly rose to the top of the Doom Charts. To which Bucky immediately stated what would become reality: “The album has claimed its right as one of 2019s top contenders in the realm of the heavy underground. The grandiose harmony between the sweeping guitar leads, occultish vocals, sophisticated use of the organ and bluesy squeal of the solos keep you on edge throughout. The groove is melodic, atmosphere crisp and the songwriting landing somewhere between Elder and Uncle Acid.” Inded, something highly intoxicating about this all, the ritual performed takes you away from this maddening world into another place and time all together. The London quintet have delivered with this record something that will surely stand the test of time, for it is indeed timeless. So we shall conclude with the poetic words by Reek of STOOM: “Dryads danced, Satyrs squirmed… Maids made merry as the Wicker burned… All the while the … breathed as the Woodlands writhed and the mountains heaved…” The Gold Medal Goes to:

The Countdown so far...

The Countdown so far...

Later on, after the clock strikes twelve and 2019 finally ends, we will know what the best album of 2019 is according to 93 of you lovely freaks out there. Those music fiends who had the time and energy to send their list to us. We thank you once again, cause without you fellow freaks in the HiVe this could not be possible. It has been a wonderful year for all sorts of heavy music once again, without any question. Amazing, stunning and incredible, the amount of great music being made around the globe.

And it seems the good stuff will keep on coming. 24 of the best albums made this year, made the Top 20 Countdown of 2019… But ofcourse you guys voted for many more great and magnificent albums. All of which deserve to be on all those personal lists. Cause they’re all awesome! And yes, we shall publish the Numbers 21 to a 100 in a few days. Probably on January 2nd… We will feature the personal lists of the HiVe team members; although most of those are already up on the Doom Charts page!  And unfortunately, there was NO album that holds The Red Lantarn this year. There was not one album that was voted for on the twentieth position of someone’s list and only once… But we shall mention a few of those bottom dwellers; cause who knows, it might just be your new favorite album! But before we tear up or start professing our love for this or that, let's run though the countdown and prepare for fireworks, a truckload of champagne and the knowledge of who produced the Number 1  album of 2019 according to you voters out there! Thanks everyone and let's all make sure 2020 will become the best year ever! Or at least the best year 2020 can be! Heavy, loud and amazing!

Number 2

Number 2

And what we mentioned about the Top 6 being in a league of their own considering the amount of points they all received, well, the Top 2 positions are even further removed from those other four we mentioned the past four days. Cause we jump almost 450 points from Salem’s Bend on Number 3 to reach the Number 2 spot… Indeed, this album received so many votes it almost broke the scale. And it’s only on the Silver Medal position! Do you realize what that means for the Number 1 spot? Cursed Tongue Records released this nugget somewhere around June and it immediately made everyone’s jaw drop, head bang and blood rush! It was our very own Reek Of STOOM that wrote it about back then for the HiVe. “… an album of Intensity, Intelligence and Invention. The band’s new opus, reads like a Rocker's almanac: a mental cognizance of every Great band you ever heard...” Exactly, it’s all there he mentions the ‘dreadnought riffs’, ‘heavy blues monoliths’, ‘glistening knives of fuzz’ and the ‘fabric of psychedelic doom’. “The band have unearthed a album that is immediately evocative of all the 70's Heavy Blues giants and the influences can be heard throughout… But Retro it is not... This is Modern Heavy Rock music of the very Highest Order that just has enough of that nostalgic feel to be familiar..” And Bucky Brown immediately predicted it on their bandcamp page: “You’re probably gonna want to keep your AOTY checklist handy and mark this debut near the very top.” Second place, the Silver Medal of 2019 goes to!

Hippie Death Cult - III

Number 3

Number 3

We jump 30 points from Saint Karloff on Number 4 to enter the Top 3. And here we find an album that held the Number 1 spot the first few days the lists came in. An album we had definitely expected on the Top 20; but which I had not thought would be among the very top of said list. But it is here and we ofcourse put it on repeat when all you crazy music fiends out there started voting for it. We were instantly hooked when it came out in May of this year through Ripple Music. But that was May, we must confess, and the albums that came out throughout the year afterwards made us forget about this super record. But now, back on repeat, we get it! We get it for sure! Cause their super fuzzy blend of seventies inspired blues and subtle rock ‘n roll has a very sweet and sunny  charm. It ticks all the right boxes of early hardrock and super stoner grooves. There are ofcourse influences of Zeppelin and Sabbath; but the psychedelic take on some tracks, the occult atmosphere on others and the huge gestures sets them apart from those early bands and all the groups that show their colors more. This powertrio knows where to grab the mustard and then produce something super infectious. So once more, over we go, on the Bronze Medal position, with once again, seventies inspired awesomeness… Number 3 of 2019 is!

Salem's Bend - Supercluster

zondag 29 december 2019

Number 4

Number 4

We talked about the big jump in points that started with Monolord on Number 6. It continued to a lesser extent with Duel on Number 5. But now we jump once again more than 80 points to reach Number 4. An album that for us,  we must confess, suddenly appeared on the Number 1 spot of The Doom Charts a while back, and it was thanks to that fact, we must confess, we discovered it ourselves. So we thank our fellow contributors, our fellow bloggers, our fellow podcasters and all those crazy music fiends who keep doing that thing they do for the Doom Charts and their own sites. Cause we all discover our own favorite bands and albums; but every so often we thank the universe that there are others out there who discover them for us. Well, all heed this hard hitting power trio from Norway. Cause they stand tall like a ghost smoking on top of mountain of loudness. Deep, dark and total doom. Out on that awesome Majestic Mountain label the Sabbath worshipping music shifts gear without every loosing track of the fact that it’s all about the journey and not the destination. A progressive stoner opera that take its time and slowly and sweetly sinks into your blood. There’s some otherworldly magic going on that keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what corner the band will take and how big the swerve will be. Groovy by default its one hell of an experience; so buy the ticket, take the 1-track, 40 minute ride! On Number 4 we find!

Saint Karloff - Interstellar Voodoo

Number 5

Number 5

A bit more than fifty points are needed to jump from Monolord on Number 6 to reach this band and their album on Number 5. One that I had definitely not expected to end up this high. Yes, we dug it, we dug it a lot when it was released through Heavy Psych Sounds around the middle of May. But we just assumed all you crazies out there would be swamped with all the other great releases to forget about this one. “Their Old School Metal approach is heavy, hard, fast and addictive!” crazy cat of  doom, Sir Reek of STOOM wrote that back then and that it really and truly is. But a lot of that storming metal does border more on the hardrock side of it all and that age old sound. That sound from the gutter and from those marauding bikers back in the seventies. Yes, there is that proto-edge to everything they do and there is charging power to their riffs. This gallop and pounce, this wicked way of heavy metal release. And those riffs, guitarlines and coloring, we must confess, has gotten even more dramatic, intense and riveting on this album. Very catchy, very hooky and very big! Get loud with Number 5!

Number 6

Number 6

And now for the lift off! We come to the big jumps in points! For the Top 6 positions seem to be in a league of their own. We jump almost 150 points after The Devil And The Almighty Blues on Number 7 reach Number 6. Indeed, Number 6 stands tall above all that came before and the rest as we shall see, even taller. But even so, we can all find comfort in the fact that even though these albums all got way more votes then the other albums, those other albums still got a lot of votes or a few votes, making them all good, great or amazing in the eye of the beholder. And that is the only eye that counts. Right?  But as we arrive on Number 6 we can look back at the times these cats made the Top 20 Countdown before. Reaching Number 14 in 2014 and Number 2 in 2017. Can we compare thee to a summers day? Or the new album, released on Relapse Records in September, to those earlier two? Ofcourse we can. But should we? It was the honorable Bucky Brown that has always been pretty vocal about his lack of understanding why everyone was so smitten with this trio’s sound, that stated what perhaps means the fans are divided on this one. He stated that this was the first album he truly dug and could perhaps even love. And we heard that mentioned by others that were never on board with these cats. Which means it is a step in another direction for the low, slow, yet crushingly loud and fuzz-laden doom of the three. Where the build and the break and the pound and the push was always key on earlier albums, this has more emphasis on melody, while still retaining their colossal side. And still retaining that immense boom these cats create! Oh yes, there shall be no comfort when Number 6 gets loud!

Number 7

Number 7

You might not want to believe it, with so many votes coming in, but we move only 1 point, yes 1 point from Arrowhead on Number 8 to reach the album on Number 7. These cats reached Number 20 of the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown with their sophomore release two years ago and their bluesy sound has been capturing our souls and imagination even more this year. It's released on that wild Blues For The Red Sun label from Norway. And their sound has become even grimier, dirtier, nastier and more commanding. This is dark blues, doomed and destined for those souls that live in the shadows. The groove even mightier than before and the scorching riffs inflaming the gut, the intestines and every other organ it can reach. There is a flow to it all that just seems to continue throughout, whether on fast-paced moments or the overall languid tempo; that flow whips you into a frenzied state. And every one of those tracks will keep you intrigued with every new listening session; they just seem to morph into something you need at that right and particular moment in time, and you probably did not even know you needed it; whatever it may mean. Indeed, it’s wicked and it’s powerful. It’s heavy and it’s blues. On Number 7 it’s!

Number 8

Number 8

A jump of 35 points today to leave Witchers Creed on Number 9 behind us. We arrive at Number 8 today and it’s one that has been on very high rotation over here and probably at the drummer of Phe’s house as well. Cause we suggested it to his wife to buy as a birthday present… We're looking at another Ripple Music release... And we’re Down Under once again, in the country already so dramatically plagued by climate change. These cats don’t do the ever present Pub Rock from the island, no no no, these crazies move distinctly into the past to gobble up all that came from the seventies. But then they turn into something spectacularly groovy, fuzzy and modern. This booms and this thunders, this quakes and this shakes your bones! It’s intoxicating, like the drinks served in a premier dive bar, those sun-dried Australian tunes will have your mind drift back towards the atavistic stoner bands, the proto metal outfits and the doom gods. It is that good. And then some. It’s rock. Menacing, tough, resilient rock. It’s heavy rock. And it will induct you quickly in their dangerous midst! On Number 8 we find!
