Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

It’s a hot and sweaty Friday over here! With temperatures reaching higher than 30 degrees. Which means it is the absolute perfect time for another round of Quick Fire Friday action! It is that thing we do to mention a lot of singles, EP’s, demo’s at once. Occasionally a full-sized album gets this treatment as well. And we know… They are worth way more of our time! But you know how it is… There is so much out there, so much good and heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

 Birth – For Yesterday

San Diego’s progressive psychedelic trio Birth is set to release their new album Born in about four weeks on Bad Omen Records. The first single for this thrilling seventies inspired, jazz rock influenced prog masterpiece is called For Yesterday. Nine minutes of pure unadulterated bliss and the overwhelming feeling that it might all be happening… It’s all happening!

El Peyote – El Peyote

Part of this was released on Youtube early May and then it turned into something more and some of that is already out on bandcamp. The rest however will also arrive in about four to five weeks. We’re talking about Joe, a one-man-band from Dorset, England channeling the desert sounds from around the globe called El Peyote. Stoner, desert rock with a lot of psychedelic background and a sweaty, sandy atmosphere. Hello Joe, what do you know?

 APE! – Later Days

Later Days was the single from 2018 four-track EP Snotty Brat Rock by Philadelphia, Pennsylvania trio APE! You know APE! right? The time travelling weirdos sent from the past to save the future or kill Cobain or dance the polka with Dakota Skye or invent a perpetuum mobile that works on gore, filth and sleaze. Whatever the actual reason, their grungy, stonerish, punkish, alternative high energy rock is damn infectious and with a new video for Later Days we though we’d better let everyone hear that APE! stuff again, cause maybe you will find out what they were sent into the future for?

Vidus - La Nube Púrpura

The four from Barcelona, Spain called Vidus delivered this single to our doorstep early April after releasing it on Youtube a few days prior. It’s called La Nube Púrpura, which means, I think, The Purple Cloud. And therefor it might just be referencing a book by that name from the British author MP Shiel known for his supernatural horror and scientific romances work. The music, a mixture of grungy tones, metal riffing, progressive touches, stoner, psych and a whole lot of attitude!

Jian – Coma Sex Life

Go watch the new music video for Coma Sex Life from the LP Sinope released on November 2021. The Swiss three deliver some grade A post-hardcore, stoner and grungy alternative rock. Sporting promo aid from the Domino Media Group the new video will do a lot for you if your sex life might be a bit comatose perhaps… And if not, it will surely make sure that you will go back and listen to that Jian album Sinope cause it’s damn freaking sexy!

Death Valley Paradise – Demons

Looking for some diesel blues to get your engine running? Check out the heavy rock, blues inspired, stonerrock loving, three-piece called Death Valley Paradise from Glasgow, Scotland. It’s got some seventies touches, something The Absurd would love and instead of a whole lotta blues you get a whole lotta energy! Demons is the first single from a band that has only been together since December 2021. Open source recorded; which means that we might be in for a whole hell of a lot more in the near future!

Hey Satan – Orange Moon

Hey Satan – Orange Moon
Cold Smoke Records/Domino Media Agency – 2019
Rock, Hard, Stoner
Rated: ****

Some factual info: Orange Moon was recorded, mixed and mastered by Serge Morattel at Rec Studio, Geneva in May and October 2018. Hey Satan is a rock trio from Lausanne, Switzerland. Formed by longtime friends François, Laurent and Frank (formerly from Shovel and Houston Swing Engine). After unveiling two music videos for the singles "Golgotha Beach" and then "Housewife Blues" the three good ol’ boys are now set to take on all comers with their Orange Moon album! Featuring ten hard rocking, stoner trucking tracks that are comprised out of twin guitars and a stampeding crazy drummer. Bluesy in nature, grungy in spirit the rock’n roll exuberance explodes from these songs in spectacular form. Hey Satan, powerful stuff with a wicked groove! O’ and look at that superb deal for both their debut and this one on vinyl!

Hooka Hey – War Cry

Hooka Hey – War Cry
Domino Media Agency / All Tube Records – 2018
Rock, Robot, Stoner, Blues
Rated: *****

Originally from Paris, France the boys relocated to Austin, Texas a few years ago. There they continued to carve out their sweet little slice of rock! It is indeed some good voodoo they do! Hooka Hey! The new record War Cry dances around that Queens Of The Stone Age sound, entices the old blues grandfathers and winks through dark electrified smoke at that luscious mistress called fuzz. It’s more progressive and daring then their earlier work and implores some twisted Americana to paint their stories red with blood and sizzling fire. It’s what they do so incredibly well, telling those sick and crazy tales that evoke dark dark nights and dangerous adventures. Primal and atavistic they dive head first into every perilous escapade that might suddenly appear before them. Yes, we are going over board again with trying to describe something that is either too good to describe or feels like it might only be ruined if described with mere ‘facts’. And fuck it, this is not what we do. We profess our love. And when something is this good on every level, we scream it from every rooftop we might find ourselves on; before diving head first into whatever insane venture might awaits us below. Hooka Hey! it’s a good day to die!

Six Months of Sun – Below The Eternal Sky

Six Months of Sun – Below The Eternal Sky
Cold Smoke/GPS/Urgence Disks/Domino Media Agency – 2018
Rock, Metal, Stoner, Sludge, Instrumental
Rated: *****

The instrumental three-piece outfit Six Months of Sun released their debut album back at the tail-end of 2013. And Water Flows, as it was called, was filled with blissful stoner grooves and steamy hot riffs. And now, finally, the three amigos are back with a follow-up called Below The Eternal Sky. It is definitely just as groovy and blistering as the first one; but this time the tracks become even more metallic and sludgy. Eight wonderful tracks that definitely still bring Karma To Burn to mind and every song is once again on par with the best that those grandmasters ever delivered. There are moments that bring to mind a few of those other stoner legends as well. The biggest difference with there earlier release is the level of heavy and the fact that you cannot find one thing, that sounds off, where you might think, that could have been done better. This is simple stoner metal, sludge rock and instrumental grooviness in its ultimate form. The Swiss power trio Six Months of Sun have without any doubt in my mind delivered the best album we will see in its niche. And it’s a niche you will want to keep curling up in. Cause it’s exactly what every freak and heavy music fiend needs! Every day!

The Three of Tuesday

The Three of Tuesday

Yes. I know. We depicted a tree for this Three of Tuesday post. But Stoner HiVe likes to rustle the feathers and mix things up. And for the Three of Tuesday posts we shall occasionally do, we will try something different, whenever the occasion arises. The releases featured here, for instance, with a small amounts of words, will have something in common. Whatever that may be. For this first edition of the Three of Tuesday, we post three releases that are PR’d by Domino Media Agency. They have a knack for finding alternative releases with a high pop sensible or catchy aspect to them. And then there are those few they promote that have none of that and will only be loved by the crazies, the addicts and the absolute music fiends. You decide to which of those groups the three featured below belong… So here they are… The first… Three of Tuesday

Black Strike – Black Strike

Born on the ashes from different bands, Black Strike reunites five musicians with common influences. After multiple experiences on stage together or apart, these five buddies found their own musical touch and are now playing a powerful and tough mix between alternative-rock, stoner/grunge and nu-metal. Don't be afraid. Give their 2015 EP a whirl. O' and in 2017, the band got back in studio to record a new EP which will see the light somewhere in spring 2018. And the first single and video Tiger is out now… Check it out!

heklAa – 1491

About three years after Pieces Of You (2015), heklAa, the piano-driven solo project run by French musician/composer Sébastien Touranton, just officially released a new and self-produced full-length effort called 1491. This new album - its eigth recording since the inception of the project in 2010, launched by its mastermind after an unforgettable trip to breathtaking Iceland – whirls around and between nu-classical, post-rock like GY!BE, Sigur Ros or Do Make Say Think, jazz and movies-music (and composers as Danny Elfman or Howard Shore). Highly atmospheric!

Lumberjacks – Alone?

Lumberjacks started in December 2013 around Lolo (Bass), Hos (Drums) and Ben (Guitars). A few weeks later, the project had a voice with the arrival of ArNo (Vocals). The lumberjacks cabin was full! Less than a year later, the EP with seven tracks “A moment to Balance” saw the light. On January 2015, after dozen of shows, Ben left the band for personal reasons. The group quickly found a successor with Rémi before to hit the road again to play some gigs with bands such as Bukowski…Their sound definitely anchored in the heavy 70’s Black Sabbath style, Stoner Rock and other modern streams, Lumberjacks played with Electric Mary and around the year 2016 began the work on its first full length album. And on their bandcamp site we can listen to This Tiny Engine and Mystery Light. Two tracks of the upcoming album Alone? Hardrock. Metal. With seventies and stoner touches. Check it out!
