Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

 Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

It’s still Friday in Hawaii right? Well… We did enjoy that glance back into 2022 we did last week. And hell, we might do that again for a Quick Fire Friday session in the near future… But this time around, we are mentioning singles that we never got around to mentioning in the past few months. And we know… There is so much out there, so much good and heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. Another Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Green Hog Band – In The Mist Of The Bong

Starting off with a proper promise and a proper bang! There’s a new Green Hog Band album on the horizon. And In The Mist Of The Bong is the first single and it’s a cracker! The New York trio deliver a doom story of epic proportions, and do this with misty riffs and smokey tones. The voices combine perfectly with that slow and determined doom march. Excellent!

Endarken - Arise

You in for some metal? Some Sepultura? Well, Danish death/thrashers Endarken deliver a fine cover of Arise for you all. Founded by Dennis Buhl formerly of Hatesphere, the band wanted to treat one of the most loved thrash anthems absolutely right. And therefor got Hatesphere vocalist Mathias Uldall to aid them in their quest to do justice to that legendary song. Judge for yourself!

Eric Angelo Bessel – Kindly Rewind

The track and video were under embargo till yesterday, the official release date. Which means, this one is actually not old at all, but brand spanking new! It’s called “Kindly Rewind" from Visitation, the debut solo album from visual artist and musician, Eric Angelo Bessel. Composed of eight instrumental songs, Visitation is an atmospheric journey through psychedelic, gothic, and ambient genres. Bessel shares, “Kindly Rewind undulates with the hazy granular flutter of an old tape machine, dotted with sonar beacons, reversed splices, and echoes of an overdubbed orchestral choir.” And it feels like a soundtrack for a space odyssey that still needs to be made…

Sif – Darkstalker

Darkstalker is the first EP of instrumental blackened doom metal by the New Orleans based solo project Sif. Not much is known about the background of Sif... This self-released three track release fuses crushingly heavy chugging guitar riffs, epic ambient drone, and dread filled explorations of slowly decaying grimdark fantasy worlds. So, don't wait for a full moon, get into dark stalking action right now!

Void of Light – Enshroud

It’s a two track EP. And the two bring you darkened post metal that will cast a spell over your or at least some kind of damp blanket. It’s called Enshroud and is brought to you by the Glasgow six-piece Void Of Light. It’s out as of March 24th on Trepanation Recordings and will soundscape the hell out of you!

 Matricide – Obey

Are you looking for some severe pain? Then feast your ears on this neck breaking groove metal from Tel-Aviv. They’re called Matricide and do as much with the groove as they do with the core, and it’s all intense and extreme freaking metal! This quartet knows how to howl you into submission... And you'd better OBEY!

Upploppet - Thinking of Me

Swedish garage rocking outfit Upploppet’s new single is called Thinking of Me. The Gothenburg based 5-piece announced their collaboration with The Sign Records in late 2022 and launched the single Golden Eyes. Now they return with the explosive hip shaker Thinking of Me, recorded in Welfare Studios by Pontus Robertsson, who also mixed the track, and mastered by Hans Olsson in Svenska Grammofonstudion. They also promise to record a new album this year and make The Sign Records release that as well. Good boys!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

It’s Friday, the final Friday of a month, which means a new Doom Charts is lurking just around the corner. Most of our time is therefor devoted to getting that all sorted out. But we still managed to wrangle out a little thing we call Quick Fire Friday! A dark, twisted, black and doom version of Quick Fire Friday this time around. And we know… All those releases, singles, ep’s, albums, they are worth way more of our time! But you know how it is… There is so much out there, so much good and heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. Another Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Ad Nihil – No Eternal Truth

Out on Addicted Label, Russian six piece Ad Nihil delivers yet another incredibly dark and twisted album called No Eternal Truth. Bleak and black metal, doom, sludge, noise and hardcore are only a minor part of the incredibly forlorn and hopeless sound, that the vocals grunt and the story tells. A story about the crisis of civilization and emergency for mankind, the total decay of everything…

Tattered The Wall – Shedding Season

Out on Cursed Monk Records, Tokyo based trio Tattered The Wall are a guitar less, instrumental, sludge, industrial, junk band with bass, drums, and unholy amount of noise. Not meant for the fainthearted and not meant for easy listening, this will distort your vision and make you stop eating, hang upside down, and spin yourself into a silky cocoon. Hoping, you will emerge one day, a butterfly… But you will probably turn into a radiating bloat fly…

Vuara – A Normal Man

More Cursed Monk Records and more blackened noise metal from Russia! Vuara brings you speeding hardcore doom sludge and pure chaos. Cassettes for A Normal Man are out via Trepanation Recordings, but the sound on the five tracks in anything but normal. But if extreme hardcore metal is your cup o tea, than yes, Vuara has a kettle for you to pour from. Scalding hot, boiling metal!

Sky Pig – It Thrives In Darkness

Sky Pig, the name always makes me think of Animals by Pink Floyd, which saw a new version releases recently. But the Sacramento trio, delivering its full-sized debut It Thrives In Darkness on Forbidden Place Records have little to do with or time for the Floyd stuff. No, they deliver metal, of the doom and sludge variation, with some definite menacing post-metal and ominous psych influences interspersed. Scuzzy, fuzzy and filthy.

Ommnus / My Pitbull Lucifer – Split album

No Profit Recordings is releasing a split album between Ommnus and My Pitbull Lucifer, both delivering five tracks. Well, MPL does six with an intro track, but let’s now dwell on that. But instead dive together with the astronaut on the amazing cover art, into the punk doom metal, the blackened sludge, the hardcore and speed metal, the alternative rock, the stonerrock and the weird mixture of all of those. It’s good, it’s awesome and it’s split right down the middle!

Everest Queen – Murmurations

Everest Queen – Murmurations
Trepanation Recordings – 2022
Metal, Doom, Sludge, Black, Prog, Post
Rated: ****

Hertfordshire… I often find myself wandering the streets of Stevenage, looking for something cool to do. Not that I live there or that I’m a particular fan of the town. To be honest, I still don’t know much about Stevenage. Although Fairlands park and their Saturday runs are cool, so are the surrounding areas near Walkern, Ardeley, the town of Hitchin and of course who can forget The Squirrel pub near Chells Way. But hey, with relatives living there, you venture over for birthdays, holidays or just for a weekend. Well, next time there, we might have to keep an eye out for the  (in the studio) four that are Everest Queen. Are there places in Stevenage where you can perform? Live venues to destroy with your mighty blackened doom sludge? Will you be doing that around the third weekend of October by any chance? For their newest release Murmurations is crushing and will overwhelm you with the first two opening tracks. Opener Sunken Thorn and following Of Treachery And Shadows smash you in the face like a brick hammer. Sunken Thorn slowly and progressively builds, adds extra layers, until it opens up for blackened growling vocals, but where this often might put a track immediately in a certain corner, it now adds to the mysticism and makes it all highly elusive. As it’s thunderous ending, leaving you with an ultimate feeling of liberation, especially if you scream along. Of Treachery And Shadows, with its punchy middle guitar work, its reverberating ending, sounding like an alarming distress call. We’re now sixteen minutes in, and to be honest, you sort of feel like you know what you can expect for the remaining four tracks. But then there’s third title track Murmurations to wash away all those expectations. Three minutes of atmospheric, ambient post rock, which starts with a refreshing rain, before an icy wind whisps it all away. All options are open now, and fourth track Dormant River will show you this in every way you can conceive. Absolute formidable post prog that carries like a meandering stream before turning into a torpid yet crashing rapid, where a certain part will have you gasping for air. Where have these Hertfordshire four found the ability to turn such post sludge, blackened prog into something ambient and at times almost pastoral. The ability to make every composition fluctuate between anger and hope, worthless and precious, something wicked and foul and so idyllic… Just listen to closing track The Burial. We will not be tiring of this any time soon… Beautiful with many hidden thorns…

Gozer – An Endless Static

Gozer – An Endless Static
Self released / Trepanation Recordings – 2022
Rock, Metal, Post, Black, Gaze, Sludge, Doom
Rated: ***

The three from Sheffield, UK that go by the name Gozer, (which actually means 'dude' in Dutch) are about to release their debut album An Endless Static. Where you will get to hear three of the four members of Archelon shift into the blackgaze, postdoom, atmospheric sludge that would become the Gozer project. Apparently recorded during the final hours of Archelon’s existence the five tracks give you this deep and dark, destitute and dream state metal that moves into more black territories as easily as it turns to post-rock. Harsh and brutal vocals hang over the compositions like a thunderstorm that’s about to break. Especially on the with French horn and keys embellished third track A Fading Light; where the tension keeps building and building and building till the inevitable top… Where it will push you over unsure if you are able to fly. An Endless Static might take a bit of extra effort to really absorb; but with the dynamic shifts, variations in momentum and the misty, sinister, yet all so clear post metal meets doom atmosphere there is enough noise to get lost in. And you might be lost forever in An Endless Static

The Marigold – Apostate

The Marigold – Apostate
Sound Effect Records/Forbidden Place Records/Trepanation Records/Coffin & Bolt Records/Golden Robot Records – 2021
Sludge, Hardcore, Post, Metal, Grunge, Alternative, Stoner, Doom
Rated: ****

Founded in 1998 by Marco Campitelli, the Italian (now) three-piece The Marigold have returned with a new album entitled Apostate. And just like the one that came before it is produced by and featuring Toshi Kasai from the Melvins and mastered by Amaury Cambuzat from Faust and Ulan Bator. We’re served eight alternative, grunge and sludge rockers. Still highly alternative, it is without any doubt their most accessible piece of metal; with even catchy stoner and captivating doom moments interspersed throughout the record. The sound often moving more into Mike Patton or Tool territory. Aiding them on guitars is also Adam Harding (Dumb Numbers, Kidbug and Thor of the Swans), delivering those extra layers of string texture. The entire album is, simply put, so pleasing to the heavy rock loving ear that this will immediately become your favorite The Marigold album and puts that former wild Kanaval album from 2014 to pasture. Apostate seems to renounce much of that noise and experimental juice they produced on their earlier records, and moves distinctly into high point territory; seeing the waves of noise crash just before their feet. Highly inspirational; and a luscious take on the alternative metal sound!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

 It’s Friday!

And you know what that means!? It’s time to listen to some cracking heavy rock and chew bubblegum, and I’m all out of gum. But the music we have plenty! And we are still on that looking back at 2019 trip, so we are here to serve you up once again, a nice sweet platter of five albums, EP’s, singles or videos of damn fine releases we missed when they came out in 2019. Cause it’s Quick Fire Friday! And we know, we know, they should have been mentioned sooner and with more words. Cause we know, we know, the albums and bands deserve more. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday. And its burns hot like molten lava!

Bad Men – Bong Weasley

SPEED DOOM, yes, written in capitals. Speed doom by a duo of Bad Men from Nottingham in the UK. Three fast paced tracks that do doom, that do punk and that do unearthly growls and distorted vocals. Dark and twisted and absolutely adorable. Best be checking out the new Bong Weasley EP by Bad Men out on Trepanation Recordings or get bitten by a bunny or two…

Filade - Le Ballet Mystique

We once, during a holiday near the Ventoux, drove over to Avignon, and that's a long drive, because we read about an underground party in a little local pamphlet. When we arrived, the cops had just put an end to it. Nothing else of interest was happening, so we just drove back. That’s about as interesting as that tale can be told. But when we talk about French math rock duo Filade and their latest release Le Ballet Mystique, nothing is dull for a moment. Haphazard rhythms and extravagant change-ups, luscious to the ear and a definite adventure. And it’s out through a collaboration or labels namely: Slice of Wax Records, GPS ProdSeaside Suicide Records and Saka Cost. Those crazy Frenchies, four labels for one cool seven inch!

Raptvre - Monuments Of Bitterness

Discordant black metal, death growls and everything bleak and burned. There seems to be little hope during these Monuments of Bitterness by German outfit Raptvre. Eight, gruesome tracks that level everything that surrounds you. Out on The Crawling Chaos Records this is a pure sledgehammer to the temple and wrecking ball to the brain!

Scarecrow – Scarecrow

The three from Perm, Russia that form Scarecrow slowly transport you to their world with a stunning and proper Overture. After which the entire record is filled with equally stunning proto metal tracks that have an occult edge and a doom approach. The seventies are alive and do not just hang around on a cross trying to chase of silly birds. No no no, this is a Scarecrow that went to Oz and got back with Iommi fingers, Bonham legs and Anderson lips. Damn this is good! Damn damn damn! This is really good!

Desert Smoke – Karakum

Shit, I wish I had known about this release when we went to Portugal last september. Would have definitely tried to meet up with these four freaks from Desert Smoke. Damn good instrumental stoner, psychedelic desert and spacey adventures with an earthy vibe. There’s a definite fire in their soul! A righteous groove and a tight rhythm section! Key elements to show all the squares some class and give ‘em a whiff of those kicks they'll never know… Karakum has rock inferno written all over it!
