The Number One album of 2018

The Number One album of 2018

We are approaching the deadline for your lists for the Top 20 Countdown of 2019. That deadline is early December 13 CET… So, if you want to contribute, send them now: HERE!  But before we start the Countdown of 2019 we look back at those past 10 yearsof Stoner HiVe. Indeed, we celebrate 10 years. 10 years of heavy riffs, romps and stomps! 10 years of heavy magic! That all started back in 2009 when the blog started, just so we would have a vehicle to count down the best 20 albums of 2009. And now we look back to last year… The edition of 2018 had 79 lists to tally, a first decline in sent in lists since 2009, but it still made the outcome more valid then when we started back in 2009. That list, deduced out of the lists sent in by 79 heavy music fiends,  started with Orange Goblin – The Wolf Bites Back on Number 20! It featured Greenleaf and their Hear The Rivers album on Number 3 and the amazing Our Raw Heart album by Yob on Number 2. For the entire Top 20 of 2018, visit the Countdown So Far post on Stoner HiVe… But what album ended up on the Number One position back in 2018... Well, that’s when we wrote:

“We jump almost forty points to reach the Gold Medalist of the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2018 according to the 79 of you lovely freaks that sent in their lists of favorite albums this year. We thank all of those voters once again, without you this would not be possible and it would not be this much fun to do. We also thank all those bands that made the Top 20 with all of those amazing albums! But we also thank the bands that did not make it; cause there is beauty on all of them! And like every year, we will list the 21 to 100 in the next few days somewhere. So, at least a few of those albums will get a little more attention; even though they probably deserve even more. But even though it was obvious from the picture above, we still need to say a few words about the Number 1 album of 2018. Cause it came with a bang! Like a gunshot on an empty street! Like a hammer strike against the Gods… We are referring to the album released by a legendary trio. A gang of three who had not produced a full album for twenty years. The doom is vibrant, alive and more ingenious than ever. This is not doom that will drag you towards the abyss, but one that takes you up high and on an adventure. We’re going on a journey packed with riff-axes and bass-machetes. Raw, slow, delaying and discoloring sludge-riffs, carrying monotonous vocals that waft you to sleep. Thick, dirty, bass-tones deliver the perfect heartbeat for your slumber and dreams of the ideal marriage between stoner metal and doom… The Gold Medal goes to…”

And we had the honor of having Kyle aka Shasta Beast revisit the album from last year… “The 20th of April, in the year of Our Lord Iommi 2018, will forever be remembered through a danker, heavier green haze than normal. The surprise album of the decade that was Sleep's "The Sciences" dropped out of nowhere like a ten ton bong rocketed straight from the Weedian planet, and what a magnificent comeback it was. Any band taking a twenty year hiatus between albums has its work cut out for them in returning to the studio, and Sleep's mythic legacy ensured any new music would face judgement by the most die-hard, tinnitus-crippled of ears. But lo and behold, any doubt was quickly cast aside by the monolithic riffage contained within "The Sciences", a true Sleep record that slung riffs as low and slow as ever with weighted tone and nod only Cisneros and Pike can deliver. Valuable newfound energy was also provided by the more than capable drumming of Neurosis' Jason Roeder, whose deft work behind the kit complemented the trudging riffs perfectly. Barely over a year later, from the impressive weed puns and Sabbath worship of "Giza Butler" to the colossal, sludgy crush of "Antarticans Thawed", "The Sciences" still delivers a classic yet fresh Sleep experience that will no doubt wear its doomed crown of kush for years to come.”

The Number One album of 2014

The Number One album of 2014

Before we start the Countdown of 2019 we look back at those past 10 years of Stoner HiVe. Indeed, we celebrate 10 years. 10 years of heavy riffs, romps and stomps! 10 years of heavy magic! That all started back in 2009 when the blog started, just so we would have a vehicle to count down the best 20 albums of 2009. The edition of 2014 had 86 lists to tally which of course made the outcome even more valid then when we started back in 2009. That list, deduced out of the lists sent in by 86 heavy music fiends,  started with Salem's Pot - …Lurar Ut Dig På Prärien on Number 20. It featured Brant Bjork and his Black Flower Power album on Number 3 and the amazing Clearing The Path To Ascend album by YOB on Number 2. For the entire Top 20, visit the Countdown So Far post on Stoner HiVe… But what album ended up on the Number One position back in 2014... Well, that’s when we wrote:

“We jump 90 points from YOB’s majestic album Clearing The Path to Ascend to reach the gold medal of this year’s Stoner HiVe top 20 countdown. Produced by a band that has made the countdown with almost every release the past years. Reaching Number 8 in 2009 and Number 13 in 2012. A band that inspired honorable Madman Tony to write a love letter this year and inspired so many more to vote for this band as the number one release or among the top of their favorites in 2014. And the groove is indeed strong in this band. They know how to stoner and they know how to metal. With a distinct swagger and luscious riffs that call for a spittoon looking container in the manner of stomping drums; they manage to control and evoke that late night blues feeling that flows underneath all that heavy rock. It will be that trusty companion that you will turn to whenever you need something summoned or awoken. Something swinging, with distorted fuzz, molasses sludge and hypnotic bass work. It is the voodoo they do so well! And we all know these three cats will deliver and keep delivering… Don’t mess with Texas…”

Some albums wither away with time and some age like fine wine… And we were honored to have the Original Guru, Doktor420 revisit the album and write down his findings… “ OK, I thought, that will be easy, when Joop asked for a re-review for one of our old Number Ones. I picked Wo Fat - The Conjuring because it had been one of my favorite albums in 2014. I love their Fuzz groove with the epic jam-parts, paired with enough heavy Blues and Boogie-Woogie. This time it didn't ignite. I needed several attempts to find back into it. The album has all the elements I dig: Psychedelic-Sludge-Stoner-Doom-Fatness – It’s just, well, my personal juju is low. But even so, I think  I can state: Wo-Fat is still very high.”

Number 2

Number 2

We move twenty-five points up from Bronze Medal album Hear The Rivers by Greenleaf on Number 3 to reach the album you voters voted for to reach the runner-up position on Number 2. Another band that has been making the final list for multiple years. And even reaching Number 2 before. Number 8 back in 2011 and the Silver Medal for their 2014 album. This time around they were bested by almost forty points by the album that ended up on Number One. But lets focus on the raw album that lays before us. A record that translates into sound all that angst, fear and worry the writer felt when going through an awful period. It will be choking you with emotion and harrowing visions. It will be pummeling you raw with pounding riffs and grate your soul with a bone chilling voice. And that is how the record grabs you and sits you down, it will speak to you and philosophize about it all. And all of that resounds in the music. Oppressive and suffocating on one hand and expansive and progressive on the other end. There is light at the end of the tunnel…

The Silver Medal goes to…

Yob - Our Raw Heart

Yob – Our Raw Heart

Yob – Our Raw Heart
Relapse Records – 2018
Doom, Rock, Metal, Sludge
Rated: ****

The record that came before, Clearing The Path To Ascend, was so freakin beautiful it became an instant doom metal classic. It reached the Number 2 position of the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of that year and everyone longed for more of Mike Scheidt and his Yob buddies. But life happens… A severe intestinal illness had Sir Scheidt dancing on a tightrope, which could have ended on the wrong end of the wire. But luckily a hugely fat grey cat came to him as spirit animal and helped him survive. All that angst, feat and worry is now translated into what became Our Raw Heart. It is perhaps not another instant classic, but with Beauty In Falling Leaves, they do have another majestic track on their hands. It will be choking you with emotion and harrowing visions. It will be pummeling you raw with pounding riffs and grate your soul with a bone chilling voice. And that is how Our Raw Heart grabs you and sits you down, it will speak to you and philosophize about it all. And that resounds in their music. Oppressive and suffocating on one hand and expansive and progressive on the other end. And with that Yob continues along a their very own Path

Vhöl – Deeper Than Sky

Vhöl – Deeper Than Sky
Profound Lore Records – 2015
Metal, Black, Death, Punk, Core, Experimental
Rated: ***

We all love Yob and all the dark, gloom, doom and awesomeness they produce. So when vocalist and guitarist Mike Scheidt starts hobbying around again with his prog power buddies from Hammers Of Misfortune and doom metal freaks Agalloch, we pay attention. Cause with the Vhöl vehicle and the new release Deeper Than Sky it sounds there’s definite more fun to be had and the reigns are slackened. Even though they burst out of the gates with the cutting power metal opener The Desolate Damned and Scheidt’s growling voice from the grave. But after this we are treated to something much lighter and almost buoyant. Take the long weaving title track for instance or the 3AM track, where we can definitely hear trash, speed, hardcore and punk going for the gusto. And even though I’m usually not very keen on black and death metal screeches, the way it is used in Lightless Sun is definitely commendable. As is their search for new ground in the combination of punk, hardcore and all the metal scenes mentioned before. Although we are unsure where to fit the instrumental piano ditty Paino? Comedic intermission?

Number 2

Number 2

“Part of the first pair of whisky releases from Adnams Distillery in Southwold, Suffolk. Just 10 barrels were used for the original release, which uses three types of grain - wheat, barley and oats - aged for over 3 years in new American oak casks. Nose: This one lures you in with approachable toasty oak, white peach blossom, some spicy grain, the bubblegum in the background this time and cocoa dark chocolate. A little lychee and sugar that’s just catching. A touch of lime. Palate: White pepper and spices, orange and a hint of powdered chocolate. Finish: Quite comforting and almost beer like with a little rich honey and chocolate now.”

The next band leaves maestro Brant Bjork trailing in its dust as we climb fifty points to reach the Number 2 spot of the 2014 Stoner HiVe top 20 countdown. The Silver Medal goes to a band that made it to the Number Eight position with the album that came before. Back in 2011. This year’s release saw it topping many lists all across the globe and we already reckoned it would have a prominent place on the HiVe as well. There is no escaping the fact that the new record is nothing but an instant doom rock classic. They take their time and carefully craft the compelling and stirring arc’s that holds you captive for fifteen minutes per track. Ten ton heavy guitar sounds whirl and twist around you lifting you up with nothing more than a couple of chords but with so much dynamic and variation that you mistake the tornado for a desert storm and the other way around. Throbbing bass work and thundering drums together with the feedback ridden dark and haunting growls or high pitched and eerie screams make this a record that is meant for the ages…
