FULL ALBUM PREMIERE - Hypnosaur – Afterlife

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE

Hypnosaur – Afterlife

There she blows! The FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for Hypnosaur's Afterlife! Together with the amazing Noise Magazine from Poland we are honored to bring you this wild new album. We wrote about it yesterday; but it has been repeat for a week and ever since... Cause...

Hypnosaur kicks the video store doors off the hinges and floods the room with neon graveyard smoke, satanic disco glitter, and enough hooks to hijack your nervous system for weeks! As we already stated...  Afterlife sounds like a cursed VHS tape of some weird eighties horror flick, discovered behind a liquored-up video store owner sleeping in a dumpster at 3AM, then blasted through a wall of fuzzed-out blown-out amplifiers. Massive choruses, earworm metal, occult swagger, psychedelic detours, punked-up stoner riffs and synths dripping radioactive slime collide in glorious excess. Somewhere between Ghost, Blue Öyster Cult, Abba and a glam gang outrunning the apocalypse, Hypnosaur deliver pure midnight mayhem: ridiculous, hypnotic, strangely heartfelt, and dangerously addictive... HypnosaurHypnosaurHypnosaur, can't you see... Those Afterlife songs, just hypnotize me...

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE - Maliciouz – Sympathypnotic Intercession

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE

Maliciouz – Sympathypnotic Intercession

The release date for the new Maliciouz album you ask… It is today! Or tomorrow, depending on where you live... And we are honored to present to you the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for Sympathypnotic Intercession by one man monastic doom magician Maliciouz, right here, right now! We brought you the premiere for the Catharticism single and we must have done something right to also be able to bring you the FULL ALBUM as well… Thank you maestro and Good Boy PR for the opportunity once again!

Maliciouz crafts a slow-burning journey on Sympathypnotic Intercession. From the dust-choked expanse of Joshua Tree, California, where sound feels carved from heat, weight, and silence, the eight tracks might feel like a cortege at one or more points. But it will constantly feel wholesome and healing. Yes, this release unfolds like a single almost one hour and ten minutes long, descending narrative of immersive, monolithic and monastic doom, where guitars sink into sludge-thick distortion and the drone-like resonance bends time itself…

After 39 has commenced the procession, Pendulous opens like a heavy breath before collapse, while A Thousand Deaths drags deeper into crushing, ritual repetition that feels almost geological in its patience. Intercession introduces a faint, melancholic fracture of light through all the opressive haze, and Agony & Ivory tightens the tension with abrasive contrast and buried, ghostlike melody, floating through a hallway not entered for ages. At the center,
Catharticism becomes a release point, where hypnotic waves of distortion feel cleansing despite their weight, as if pressure is entirely transformative and requires no escape. Torn unravels the structure into fractured, liminal space, and Mountain Rising Falling closes the passage with vast, echoing descent and ascent folding into one another, like an M C Escher labyrinth.

And as we might have stated before, throughout the album, the sound remains immersive, oppressive, and strangely restorative, like a slow ritual of emotional release through weight and repetition… Press play now on
Maliciouz and all it's raw, unpretentious doom. Let it engulf you completely... Easy to enter, but be warned, you might lose all your sorrows, angers and frustration. You might come out at the other end, slightly healed...

Low, slow, and loud doom from the Mojave Desert
New album “SympathypnoticIntercession” out May 22nd, 2026
Genres: Funeral doom, sludge, instrumental

After crushing 2025 with two albums “SARBERUS” and “TORTOISE”, one-man doom dealer Maliciouz returns with more oppressively heavy, psychedelic riffs on “Sympathypnotic Intercession”. A statement on grief, pain, and healing, the new album is personal and poignant.

The music of Maliciouz is described as “tectonic shifting of the earth’s crust”, “the slow, grinding decay of a planet across eons”, “almighty riffs and a dark atmosphere”, “will vibrate your skull off of your spine”,“wrapped in hypnotic, suffocating atmospheres”, “a wall of crushing weight”, “heavy as fuck”, “the riffs are gargantuan, lumbering, prehistoric behemoths”, “soaked in desert heat”, “state of the art low tempo metal”.

About the album:

What the holy blazes does Sympathypnotic mean?! A hypnotic piece of music or performance could be sympathetic if it evokes deep emotions or resonates with someone’s inner state. For example: “The hypnotic melody felt sympathetic to my grief—it lulled me into a calm where I could finally cry.” And what about the Intercession part? Inter - to place into a grave or tomb Cession - the formal giving up of rights The specific way I’m using it here is “lay down your right to heal yourself and let the music do this for you”. I fully believe in the power of heavy music to heal. My soul resonates with low, slow, and loud. Heavy music relieves heaviness. On this premise... Sympathypnotic Intercession is a collection of songs regarding life’s troubles; but with the hope of bringing relief and healing for those needing this.

Single Premiere – Phe – Adrift

Single Premiere

Phe – Adrift

If the honorable Bucky Brown says that 'Phe is short for Phenomenal' on their very first EP release, you know this is a band that has something special going on. Well, that little trio from the south of the Netherlands will be releasing a new album called Closer To The Sun somewhere after the summer has ended. And tracking the growth from that first EP to Glooming Dawn in 2020 and Nothing Else Is Real in 2023 was stunning. But hearing the first single: Adrift will blow each and everyone away. The growth is PhePhe stands for Phenomenal! We're honored to present to you the Single Premiere for the brand new Phe track: Adrift

For some the new single Adrift might scratch that King Buffalo itch or quench the Kal-El urge... But for all Adrift will feel like the right word, for this how Phe pulls the listener in. You are not dropped into a song, but it is slowly untethering from gravity. The new single moves slowly through the cosmos as it mirrors the psychonaut on board's half remembered journey through a heat-hazed desert night. Riffs arrive in slow waves rather than clean edges and support the collapsing dreamscapes. Hypnotic repetition beomes the kind of spell that pulls everything inward as time seems to stretch outwards...

Guitars blur into shimmering spacey haze, sometimes crushing down like tectonic plates, sometimes dissolving into distant echoing lights. The rhythm section steadies it all, not driving, but drifting through the currents like the vessel we are all bound in. Vocals cut through like transmissions from another time, human, pained, but slightly removed, effects leaving you no choice but to trust the guide as you transverse along....

Adrift is heavy, but weightless at the very same time... A slow orbit, through dust, distortion and an endless open expanse. Surrender is the only way forward...

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE - Mörkekraft - Fragments

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE

Mörkekraft - Fragments

From the cold southern coast of Norway comes Mörkekraft, a three-man force forging heavy rock like iron in a storm-lit fjord... There's something very special about the Mörkekraft three. But you already knew that, cause you've had their Follow The Spiders single on repeat. Right? Well... Today, right before the full Fragments album is released through Octopus Rising / Argonauta Records tommorrow, we are honored to bring you ALL of the singles! That's right... We're honored to bring you the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for Mörkekraft's Fragments

An album that drives hard on all that seventies classic rock, filtered through modern stoner and psychedelic sensibilities. Just open the album, just Follow The Spiders. That opening track, what a battering ram! It creeps, it crawls and it moves every bone in your body! And the entire Fragments album is packed tightly with thick, fuzzed out riffs, grooves straight out of the golden age of rock and a warm analog sound that makes it all feel like a fireside saga sung beneath those northern skies. Fragments rolls forward on those colossal Sabbathian riffs, but the tundra haze is never far away. Echoes of wandering space rock and bluesy laments are woven into the album's muscular stride. And then there are those short moments of more pop sensible, ballad opting songs like Godspeed. Delivered with euqal intensity and cavalier emotions. Turning it all into sun beam bursting through the clouds. Why  yes, they've managed to capture all those dark forces and transform it into something that will induce euphoria. They've found that ancient root somewhere on the road and knew that they had struck gold. Just imagine those candelit taverns where ancient spirits still whisper and you can see the Mörkekraft three listening...

Now it's your chance to start listening... To that golden hued rock of Fragments, brought to you by the Mörkekraft three!

PR Wire:

Mörkekraft – “Fragments”

Mörkekraft are a Norwegian heavy rock trio blending heavy rock, stoner and psychedelia into a sound defined by massive riffs, atmospheric depth and emotional weight. Often described as “a depressed Thin Lizzy,” the band combines strong melodic sensibility with a darker, introspective edge. Their debut album, “Fragments,” was recorded at Bridge Burner Recording in Stavanger across two sessions in January and May 2025, capturing both a colder, more restrained tension and a more dynamic, expansive approach. Engineered by Ørjan Kristoffersen Lund and mastered by Steven Grant Bishop, the record presents a cohesive and immersive sonic identity. Inspired by northern landscapes and shaped by themes of human struggle, inner conflict and the search for meaning, Fragments moves between heaviness and introspection, balancing fuzz driven riffs with melancholic melodies and a strong atmospheric presence. Across eight tracks, the album explores contrasts between light and darkness, instinct and control, delivering a debut that is both powerful and emotionally resonant.

Single Premiere – We Follow The Earth – Foamdrinker

Single Premiere

We Follow The Earth – Foamdrinker

The opening track, the title track and the final single! We're honored to PREMIERE for you the final single Foamdrinker before the full album by We Follow The Earth arrives on May 12. The Winston Salem, North Carolina four are experts in creating an intense atmosphere while combining sludge metal and doom... And Foamdrinker is another prime example of that proficiency!

The album talks of a world locked in perpetual winter, where survival demands sacrifice. The atmospheric sludge sound swells like those frozen seas shifting and breaking, ice cold expanses that boom as its weight explodes through riffs. Beneath the ice, both oceanic and internal horrors rise, as selflessness and survival collide in crushing, cinematic tension. Foamdrinker's slow burning riffs start off but you can immediately feel the surging crescendo and the distant percussion nears and the burst of fury that awaits. Heavy, intense and entirely cinematic, We Follow The Earth's sound has meditative qualities, but is often volatile and shifting with restless momentum... Like a storm gathering over all that ice cold water...

Press play on We Follow The Earth's Foamdrinker right now and be ready for the entire album dropping on May 12th! All done independently, but Nespithe Records is handling the CD's!

 PR Wire:

We Follow The Earth is a sludgy doom band that will occasionally lean into a post metal sound. Located in Winston Salem, North Carolina, the core of their sound is built on slow, crushing riffs, ever present soul shaking bass, and aggressive, strained screams. Started as a solo project for Matthew Crotts, with his brother, Robert Crotts, offering to write the concept story and lyrics for the debut album “Lightbearer” in 2023. Shortly after releasing the debut album, writing started for the 2nd concept album “Extinct”, which was recorded/engineered by Jamie King and released in March 2024. This new album,“Foamdrinker”, takes the listener on a journey through a world that is, for unknown reasons, stuck in a perpetual winter. Facing extinction, our characters are willing to go to any lengths to survive, but dangers beyond the ice lurk in the depths of the ocean and within ourselves. The struggle to overcome these challenges that we are presented with, both the external and the internal superstitions about how we think the world should work from the crux of this story. How we balance selfless acts against selfish ones can save or doom the world.

Single Premiere

Maliciouz - Catharticism

Maliciouz will be releasing his new album Sympathypnotic Intercession on May 22nd. But we're honored to present to you now the first single for that album called: Catharticism! There's poetry at work here. From Joshua Tree, one-man-doom-magician Maliciouz crafts a hypnotic, molasses-heavy journey where crushing riffs and melancholic drone stretch time itself. The glacial doom feels less somber than earlier work but still unfolds in slow, immersive waves with a hallowed touch. Getting lost in the track allows the listener to release pent-up, excessive emotions, leading to emotional, spiritual, or intellectual relief and a balanced state. It’s raw, unpretentious doom that engulfs you completely... Easy to enter, but be warned, you might lose all your sorrows, angers and frustration. You might come out at the other end, slightly healed...

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE - White Tundra - Stories From The Dark

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE

White Tundra - Stories From The Dark

The time has come! As we mentioned on Monday, today is the day we get to PREMIERE for you all the FULL ALBUM by Norwegian fourpiece White Tundra! It's called Stories From The Dark and it's brooding, menacing and full of dread... For Stories From The Dark creeps in like those eyes that watch you through those frozen woords, that glint you think you see just beyond the firelight. And as the storm approaches, you can feel the storm growing with each crushing riff and shifting shadow. Their sound stalks and lunges, one more a heavy deliberate prowl, and the next a like a cosmic void pulling you under. And then those voices, snarling, chanting, grunting in Nordic tongue or English. And beneath all that massive weight, melodies flicker like dying embers... This is no ordinary album, hell no... It's a saunter through the dark, where every step feels thrilling and just dangerous enough you dare to keep going...

 Right?

If you dare, go and push play on White Tundra's Stories From The Dark

PR Wire:

Norwegian heavy voyagers White Tundra are back with their second full length album, “Stories from the Dark”, set for release on April 24th 2026 via Octopus Rising and Argonauta Records in deluxe vinyl and digital formats. The band also unveils their new single and official videoclip, “Kultarberget”, offering a first glimpse into the dark, atmospheric world of the album.

Formed in 2023, White Tundra emerged from the northern landscapes of Norway with a sound that fuses heavy atmospheric melodies, hypnotic grooves and a deep Scandinavian mystique. Their music drifts between desert rock energy, doom laden textures and Nordic folklore inspired narratives, balancing the raw power of 70s hard rock with modern stoner and dark rock influences. Often compared to Red Fang, Witchcraft and Skraeckoedlan, the band maintains a unique identity that is unmistakably their own.

Following their acclaimed self titled debut album in 2023, which secured a place on the Doom Charts, White Tundra spent 2024 rebuilding their creative core. With the arrival of lead guitarist Kjell Andres Nilsen and bassist Øyvind Persvik, the band began crafting what would become “Stories from the Dark”. Recording took place at AutumnSongs Recording Studio with producer Rhys Marsh, who also worked on the debut album, and mastering was completed by Joona Hassinen at Studio Underjord.

White Tundra share:

“We started working on this album early 2024 when Kjell Andres joined on lead guitars. He had been piling up ideas for a while and came into the band with fresh blood and energy. After a while, Øyvind joined on bass and we really started to focus on writing in the summer of 2024. Many songs were in the loop for this album, but we settled on these final six tracks as the ones who fit best together. The winter and spring were used for demoing and pre productions, and Ola recorded the drums in mid July. Bass, guitar and vocals were recorded during two consecutive weeks in August.

The music has partly been written after the lyrics, often starting with creating the chorus and main mood of the songs and building from there. Other songs were partly finished musically before the lyrics fell into place. Ola wrote all the lyrics, with help from singer Steven to adapt them to the music. Thematically it takes off where the previous album ended, with lyrics about escaping from society, exploring the unknown and incorporating local folklore. The closing track, White Tundra, attempts to capture the entire soul and journey of the band, from desert rock inspiration to the white, stormy tundra.”

Tracklist
Healer 04:43
Huset 05:38
Riderless Horse 06:51
Kultarberget 04:56
The Lake 05:27
White Tundra 08:44

With “Stories from the Dark”, White Tundra deliver a cohesive, immersive experience that cements their place as one of the most compelling voices in the modern heavy underground. Fans can explore hypnotic riffs, soaring melodies and atmospheric heaviness that spans Nordic darkness, desert rock grit and folklore-inspired storytelling.

White Tundra – Stories From The Dark

White Tundra – Stories From The Dark
Octopus Rising / Argonauta Records – 2026
Metal, Stoner, Sludge, Doom, Prog
Rated: ****

It’s sludgy, it’s got razor sharp teeth, its menacing, it has style up the wazoo and we are honored to have the new White Tundra album Stories From The Dark as a Full Album Premiere for you all this Wednesday! That’s right, the Norwegian four are back! We mentioned their Honningfella release back in 2021 but should have mentioned their 2023 self-titled album as well. Both have that special edge to it, making you bit scared as well as very excited to be listening to it! Well, be sure to come back on Wednesday, if you dare, cause you will be hearing the full Stories From The Dark album here first!

Stories From The Dark kicks open a frozen door with the single Healer and drags you into the storm that blasts across the tundra. Which is followed by Huset, riffs heralded by the drums, immediately become as thick as molasses, fuzz-soaked and all of it rumbles like thunder closing in fast. And then it opens up, everything stretches outwards, and turns into a swirling expanse, where time feels optional and the sweat will be running down your back. One moment you’re locked into a swaggering, groove-heavy stomp, the next, you’re drifting through cosmic haze, guitars spiraling and bending as if pulled by some unseen gravity and a momentum that will surely send you whirling back towards that groove.

It’s what they do best, White Tundra craft a dense, riff-driven sound that fuses the weight of doom and stoner metal with the color and sprawl of psychedelic and progressive rock. Their music leans heavily on fuzz-drenched and sludge guitar tones. But there are always those groove-centric rhythms, and a raw, unpolished edge that keeps everything feeling immediate, visceral and slightly menacing.

Like a wolf grinning from the dark, there’s a wildness to it all. Vocals snarl, chant, grunt and beg to be howled along with. Beneath the noise, though, rising from the dark, there’s craft: hooks buried in distortion, melodies glowing through the murk, and a deep-rooted love for heavy rock tradition and a progressive edge that gives the right amount of atmospheric story telling. Just listen to the opening section of third track Riderless Horse for instance. Elements of classic heavy rock and Nordic atmosphere seep through, giving their sound a windswept, ghostly quality. Fitting for that track, but bleeding through on more moment throughout this magical album.

Vocals in both Norwegian and English, vocalized by a duo of voices, implore you to shout along or sound like a shadowy ritual. The gravel voiced prophets know exactly how to hit the right moments as they shell out their sermons across all the thunderous tones and grooves. It’s all walking a tightrope between hypnotic communion and creeping deception, dark Nordic woods are conjured and all those magical whispers will linger, like ominous echoes that both entice and unsettle. Do you dare to wander through all these Stories From The Dark?

(Written by JK)

It’s out, April 24th on Octopus Rising / Argonauta Records, but you can hear the Stories From The Dark album this Wednesday, the 22nd, right here on Stoner HiVe

Album Premiere - Beneath The Skin - Fade Away

Album Premiere

Beneath The Skin - Beneath The Skin

We haven't written the full review yet, but we cannot idly sit by as this amazing release hits the streets, across the globe, right now! It's the full self-titled album by Beneath The Skin! We were honored to bring you the single premiere for Fade Away and cannot stress enough that the Kansas fourpiece have managed to create a very own style after only releasing their Pay Up EP in 2025...

Their very own style, like a rusted freight train tearing through a dive bar at midnight, loud, filthy, and impossible to stop. Their riffs ooze and grind, thick as asphalt in summer, while the bass snarls like a busted engine ready to explode. Machinal in execution, but entirely human. Just like the drums, stomping, swinging, and dragging you into a lurching, headbang trance. It's all so relentless, overpowering, a surging wave that just washes over you. Or a slow motion landslide, filled with doom and sludge and all soaked in sweat, blood and whisky. We use the word grit often, but this is the personification of it. Back alley ambiance inviting you to join the brawl, there's pain here and scars, but it all feels so triumphant!

Go press play on the full Beneath The Skin album, out now!

Doom & sludge with soul from Kansas City

Self-titled debut album out April 18th

Genres: Doom, sludge, stoner

FFO: Crowbar, Down, Sleep, Electric Wizard, Black Sabbath, Acid Bath, Melvins, CoC

Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, Beneath The Skin is a doom and sludge metal four-piece poised to unleash their crushing debut self-titled album this April, with lead single “Fade Away” dropping April 3rd.

Following 2025's “Pay Up” EP, an uncompromising chronicle of drug addiction and recovery, the band are back with more hard-hitting groove and gritty soul. Hailing from the Crowbar and Corrosion of Conformity school of heavy, the riffs and swagger are front and center. Frontman Mike Riley’s grizzled, wildman vocals growl and croon, oozing charisma atop a wave of punishing grooves.

IN THE BAND'S OWN WORDS:

"We worked on this album for around 2 years. We had a pretty aggressive show season in 2024 and 2025 on top of recording our debut EP "Pay Up" in early 2025, but “Pay Up” represented the band’s early days. Joshua joined in spring of 24 and “Pay Up” was already written. With this one, we wrote it all together in rehearsals during a challenging show schedule so it was more of a complete project for us. We have intentionally kind of explored the whole spectrum of the genre. This thing moves around while still having a cohesive sound.”

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE - Bad Mothers Union - Sore Losers

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE

Bad Mothers Union - Sore Losers

We mentioned it on Monday. Stoner HiVe is doing another FULL ALBUM PREMIERE this week! And the time is now! We're honored to present to you the new release by BAD MOTHERS UNION! It's called Sore Losers and was already hinted at during a Quick Fire Friday session hosted by Ronny Dijksterhuis. He mentioned the first two singles and wrote: "March 19th sees the release of Bad Mothers Union's new Album 'Sore Losers'. January delivered the first preview through the twisted and slightly alienating heavy psych song 'God's Intercom'. This month these Irishmen treat us to another tune of the album, a mystical, dragging, dark, drawn-out yet exiting experimental psychedelic trip called 'Cut in Half'. God knows how the other tracks will sound, but I for one am more than eager to find out because both previews are killer."

Well, somewhere between a rehearsal room sweat-fog and a cosmic transmission beamed out of Wefxord, Bad Mothers Union’s Sore Losers detonates like a crate of amps tumbling down a pub cellar staircase. Part of the unruly Irish underground currently kicking up dust in basements across the country, the record rides a lazy motorik pulse into long, hallucinated jams where guitars spiral, drums hammer and feedback blooms like neon moss on damp brick. Think the jagged noise of Sonic Youth colliding with the garage-psych ferocity of Thee Osees after three days without sleep. Five tracks, played loud, loose and gloriously alive.

And the time truly is now! For right now, you can hear the full album in full force, from the over twenty minutes long opener Jerusalem Jones, sprawling in scope and wonderful in all its meandering psychedelic flow. The one-minute long punk and noisy Bad Mothers Union outcry and battle statement. The two singles and almost eighteen minute long final track Golden O. A tour de force that starts somewhere in a deep cosmic fog, where it slowly drifts forth, like a languid psychic broadcast from the outer edges of a jam heavy galaxy. Fuzz guitars hum, delays scream and a stubborn snare drum keeps the track steady while the music spirals outwards through eastern tinged psychedelic trance infusion before touching down in a rainy back alley cul de sac somewhere in the dubious Murrintown part of Wexford, Ireland... Amazing album! Sore Losers is a winner!

Sore Losers comes out Camellia Sinensis Records on March 19th, but you can hear it right here, righ now!

A whirling dervish of unbridled self-expression Bad Mothers Union unleash torrents of euphoric kraut-psych-rock as they reach to the heavens on their new album ‘Sore Losers’. Established in Kilkenny, Ireland by front man Conor Kavanagh, during Bad Mothers Union existence they have focused on forging a community of like-minded individuals, bands and artists with the view that no crowd or venue is too small. Driven by the unshakeable need to share their artistic vision with the world. Eschewing the standard approach to membership the band act as a musical collective, thriving on collaboration and what each player’s voice brings to their sonic tapestry. Building on the success of two highly successful singles ‘God’s Intercom’ and ‘Cut in Half’ which caught the sharpened ears of Hot Press, IMRO, First Music Contact, Pure M Zine, Blowtorch Records, Blackmarket Playlists amongst other, new album ‘Sore Losers’ is a 5 song sonic exploration of the musical relationship between the band members. The blistering results of people, live, in a room playing music together. Speakers pushing air, cymbals crashing and drums exploding as they ring an unbridled expression of themselves from their instruments. Hypnotic, trance inducing rhythms, are juxtaposed against celestial spiralling guitars or swathes of noise and feedback punctuated by samples of mundane everyday life. All at once, the songs are a reflection of the world the band live in and pull the inner world out for all to hear. It feels organic, it feels real, unpretentious, unapologetic and absolutely vital in Ireland’s music scene today.

Eschewing the standard approach to membership the band act as a musical collective, thriving on collaboration and what each player’s voice brings to their sonic tapestry. The current line-up is Conor Kavanagh (vocals/guitar), Shay English (bass), James O’Neill (drums/percussion), Céin O’Dowd (guitar/bouzouki) and Ethan Corcoran (synth/bass/vocals) while Shay English (bass/vocals/guitar), Joel Pitcher (guitar/bass/vocals), Michael Lanigan(guitar/bass/vocals) and Aaron Harbourne(drums/percussion) all contributed to the album alongside Conor Kavanagh. Drawing on influences musical and beyond the band cite Sonic Youth, Thee Osees, Mogwai and Melvins with some David Lynch adding a surrealist twist to the expansiveness of their music.

The album opens with ‘Jerusalem Jones’ and quickly establishes the mood for the album. Clocking in at 20 minutes and change, the band aren’t here to make radio friendly unit shifters or interested in bending to some algorithmic idea of what music should be. The song builds organically as if unfolding before us for the first time. Bass and drums lock in from the start as a hypnotic bass line keeps the track tethered to Earth, while drums give the track its drive, subtle changes in rhythm push parts forward and dictate the flow of energy. This solid foundation gives the guitars the time and space to explore multiple melodic ideas as they build to crescendo and pull back, or double down and ascend to further celestial heights. Music like this is designed to give you space to think, to let your mind wander and conjure up images that accompany the spiraling music. Reminiscent of bands like Earthless or Sleep, there’s a vastness to ‘Jerusalem Jones’ that just isn’t achievable in 4 minutes with a verse, chorus, verse structure.

Second track ‘BMU’ takes a complete 180. It’s all over before it’s began as the track burns past in under a minute a half. Musically, perhaps the only track to ever feature a Gnasher impression, reference Desperate Dan and then descend into noise rock/hardcore. The lyrics are described as the band’s mission statement, repeated until the tracks die into a fury of feedback and chorus pedals. Similar to a long lost Nirvana track you might find on an Outcestide compilation, crafted in some dank Seattle basement before Nevermind hit, unself-conscious and unpretentious.

‘God’s Intercom’ was initially conceived during a jam session, fittingly, in a Methodist Church in Kilkenny. From the outset ‘God’s Intercom’ is explosive, a single chord and a machine gun snare roll are all the introduction given before the band open the gates to the fury within. Aaron's drums propel the track forward, while guitars swirl around each other, untethered like a wild rudderless rocket. We are giving some breathing space as the track drops down enough for Conor to intone ‘It was Christmas Day, pissing rain, Jammy called once again, Were those the days before the crash?’. He says the lyrics are stream of consciousness, borne out of the track evolving over many jams and many live shows, but pull in characters from his youth, coupled with insecurities, and self-doubt mixed with reminiscence about teenage boredom. There’s no ‘verse/chorus/verse’ here as the track naturally ebbs and flows, guitar melodies rise and fall, and unexpected hand claps remind people it’s cool to dance as we build to crescendo and before dropping down to recharge. The track features Peer Pleasure’s Brandon Murphy on vocals during the staccato middle section who’s lines ‘I've been looking at you while you've been laughing at me and I've been laughing at you this whole entire time.’ seem like how the conversation with God might actually go, should he ever answer that intercom. Elsewhere on the track Fiachra Carey plays saxophone, who, when recording his takes decided to dress like a member of ska legends, Madness. Because, of course.

Penultimate track ‘Cut in Half’ explores some of the bands more experimental post punk leanings. When the track was written, Michael Lanigan instructed Aaron to play a simple beat ad infinitum allowing the band to swirl around it. Making full use of the three guitars, as the track progresses they intertwine and melt together, becoming almost impossible to discern who is playing what. String scrapes become an essential part of the language for the track, creating tension as the band pulse behind. Sounding like signals captured from space, delayed guitars seem in conversation with each other as the two bass lines, act as an anchor and alternately adding to the chaos. During the recording, Shay, suffering from a bout of illness and without realizing the tape was rolling, in his frustration took to smashing his bass off the floor, creating an accidental new layer of noise for track. This unadulterated approach to song writing and recording is central to Bad Mothers Union, moving at the speed of inspiration the band aren’t hindered by more traditional ‘rock & pop’ approaches.

Closing out the album is ‘Golden O’, which acts almost as a sister song to ‘Jerusalem Jones’, two sides of the same coin. Originally conceived as an intro to another song, with the main riff played backwards, it outlasted it’s original home and grew into something of its own. Unhurried in allowing the music to find its way, there’s a heavy pschy influence here with more than an air of eastern mysticism. The track pulls you into it’s deep hypnosis, as the ever morphing guitars guide you through the trance. Small, subtle changes grow and build into new ideas that blossom into another and into another. There are any number of sounds that rise up and fall away, delays that sound like signals screaming to Earth from space, fuzz guitars that whirr away under the track, the ever-present snare drum keeping you from losing yourself to the viscous atmosphere. The track ends with an acoustic guitar and the final haunting tones that bring us back down to earth.

‘Sore Losers’ is representative of Bad Mothers Union as a musical entity, in that, it is an unrelating infinite spiralling force of energy. Unperturbed by what the outside world may think. This is music that needs to be created, that could not be kept inside and speaks to both worldly and celestial forces. Bad Mothers Union create moments of transcendence, sounds to get lost in, a blissful euphoria all concocted by a voice, drums, bass, guitar and some ska saxophone. A band that remains true to themselves and in that create their own gravitational pull. ‘Sore Losers’ feels like only a glimpse into the wider world of Bad Mothers Union.
