Number 14

Number 14

Another minor jump in points today. Only eight points takes us from High On Fire on Number 15 to these cool cats on Number 14. Talking about legendary… They’ve perfected their hang loose, laidback version of stonerrock many years ago. Always carrying a skater or surf vibe with their releases and turning ever more into the perfect fuzzy rocking and mellow grooving hybrid. And for this album they do it in double style. For it is a double album that sharpens their fuzz skills on one side and show off how freaking smooth they can be once the other side has started. Perhaps with more glances towards the sixties and seventies this time around, but as always, with these sundried riffs and this electrifying and sunny atmosphere. As if the universe opens up for you and gives you these rapturous glances at a bright blue sky waiting for you tomorrow…

According to all of your votes, on Number 14 we find:

Delco Detention – It Came From The Basement

Delco Detention – It Came From The Basement
Self released – 2021
Rock, Hard, Stoner, Blues
Rated: ****

Flashback. So there I am, around nine, perhaps ten, years old. Driving my parents mad because the computer is downstairs and I’m playing this new game where I’m stuck outside this mansion and do not know how to get in there. My parents are going nuts, because of the constant 8 bit chirping of the computer crickets. The following day I’ve been banned for a week from using the Commodore64. So, instead I play with toy soldiers and this Lego train set I remodeled into a haunted house. Or perhaps I went out and played soccer with my buddies from down the street, rang doorbells and quickly ran away or looked for a way to get my hands on an ice cream or two. Any of that is definitely possible. What I sure as hell did not do was ask my musical heroes if they would like to jam with me and my dad. But, hence the long winded intro, that is exactly what Tyler Pomerantz did. The little man is nine years old and starts writing these kick ass songs in his basement together with his dad Adam. They do some covers as well and one of the Clutch covers got the attention of Neil Fallon who reached out and said, why don’t I add my vocals to one of the covers…

Sure, that happens, but Tyler then goes out and just asks, Neil Fallon, from Clutch, if he can sing one of his own material. He agreed, with some hesitation, and The Joy Of Homeschooling turns out so freaking cool, you just cannot imagine. Tyler plays guitar like an old hand, leaving his sound hanging, his riffs rounded out and hands you this sweet small solo with a mic drop kind of attitude. O’ and then he also picks up the bass and gives you a mean bass line and wicked loop! And one must confess, those lyrics and vocal lines Neil throws across it are sheer perfection and give it this gritty mean ass edge.

Well, that was the first kill and after that, for eight months straight Tyler and his dad go about recording fifteen tracks, with the aid of all these tool cool for school cats from bands like Mississippi Bones, She Love Pablo, Earthless, Hippie Death Cult, Fu Manchu, Lionize, The Age Of Truth, Thunderbird Divine, King Snake, The Mike Dillon Band and Blind Melon. The result is one freaking good hard rocking album steeped in the blues and born from stonerrock. Hearing that guitar, riff, wail and screech; you would not believe the little man is only nine and he has only been playing for a year or two. There’s feeling there, there’s heart, soul and pure love for the strings. And hey, the Dad can sure hit his skins as well; now if only the cat and dog could also play instruments they would have a full band right there, down in the basement. The two are called Delco Detention and the album is wickedly titled: It Came From The Basement.

We could single out more favorites on the album, like Dirt School with Eddie Brnabic and Ben Jackon from Hippie Death Cult or From The Shadows with these cats named Mike Descoteaux and Bob Mavity, 422 with Kevin McNamara from The Age Of Truth and both Werewolvery tracks with Jared Collins of Mississippi Bones… But to be honest, they’re all fucking cool! Chaos, destruction, rock’n roll! It Came From The Basement!

Doors To No Where – Darkness Falls

Doors To No Where – Darkness Falls
Desert Records – 2021
Rock, Stoner, Punk, Grunge, Desert
Rated: ****

They’ve been around since 2010; but to be honest we’ve only been familiar with their 2016 recording The Haunting. But now that their new album Darkness Falls has gotten its hooks in us, we will definitely check out the rest of their stuff and not lose track of the trio that is Doors To No Where ever again! There’s a new bassplayer on board for this record and Fu Manchu’s very own Bob Balch riffs along on the title track and final piece of music on Darkness Falls. The orchestral and grandiose gestured Who Died? is the sixth track on the album and it’s the first hint of the magic to come on that closing title track. For it’s an almost eight minute battleship that starts off so intense and earthy and in a perfect tempo that you cannot wait to see the desert flower slowly blossom into the beauty that is. And it does, shows you every color possible and delivers itself in all its glory. Is it justified to single that one final track out? Indeed, it is not. For we have already been shocked into submission by opening banger Lie, Lie, Lie and that majestic groove of Policy could have gone on forever if we would have had a say in it. It’s all very impressive and hearing all these eight tracks shows perfectly that the Doors To No Where three know precisely what their best qualities are. And they bring it all together on Darkness Falls, perfectly balanced.

Big Scenic Nowhere – Vision Beyond Horizon

Big Scenic Nowhere – Vision Beyond Horizon
Heavy Psych Sounds – 2020
Rock, Stoner, Desert, Punk
Rated: ****

It just entered the Top 10 of the January Doom Charts of 2020 and we were honored to write those few dubious lines about Vision Beyond Horizon, the new Big Scenic Nowhere record. We know the project and we know what kind of music we can get ready for. The only think to know is what kind of guests are involved and how good on the scale of great, to awesome, to legendary, to universe shattering it will be… “Oh yes! A new record by the Gary Arce (Yawning Man) and Bob Balch (Fu Manchu) duo and their ever revolving array of helping hands. Mario Lalli,. Nick Oliveri, Per Wiberg, Tony Reed, Bill Stinson, Alain Johannes and a few heroes more. Perhaps a little less drawn out, jammy or wide in comparison to their earlier release but still very desert and very stoner. Which is logical when you think of all that great stuff Arce and Balch have been a part of. Indeed, killer riffs and desert psychedelics a plenty! Oh, and yes, one weird fast punk track?!”  Only a few quick lines indeed, enough to entice and not give away too much. Perhaps a fitting description for that Vision Beyond Horizon

Stoner HiVe’s Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Once again, a day late with the Top 5 Most Listened albums of the past week. But everyone knows the deal, work, life and everything in between gets in the way. But here it is, those five favorites of the past week. Killer Boogie is back with a new record called Acid Dream, out on Heavy Psych Sounds. Catchy, fuzz heavy hardrock with enough kandy-kolored psychedelics to induce flashbacks! Mythic Sunship, featured on the Doom Charts released their new Upheaval record through El Paraiso Records. As we already mentioned: Grade A psychedelic space rock straight from the heart of Denmark. It’s jazzy, it’s groovy, it’s sunny and it’s spacious doom with the exact right amount of kraut. JIRM! Jeremy Irons and the Ratgang Malibus, as they used to be called, releases Surge Ex Monumentis, though Small Stone. The name change also features a change in sound. More metallic and more progressive touches. We definitely dig it! When Fu Manchu drops another record, one must sit up, pay attention and listen! Clone Of The Universe is out on At The Dojo Records. Their definite skate and surf take on stoner is still there, and it still shines like a summer morning sun full of promise. And as the sun starts the set we switch to side B, featuring only one eighteen-minute track. Featuring Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson, it gives us a progressive stoner jam extravaganza that cannot do anything else but mesmerize! Sundrifter is another outfit that delivers graded A stoner! Visitations, features nine steamy, sweltering desert rockers that meander through some psychedelic avenues and space-oriented heaviness. What a record! As are all of them! So check’m out! Check’m all out!

Number 9

Number 9

We pass Geezer and Sinister Haze on Number 10 with five points to reach the band on Number 9. An album, I must confess, that only pulled me in after the new listening sessions started when I saw the votes come in. Man, how could this have passed me by when it was released back in July. Seventies inspired hard rock with heavy metal colors and stoner trucking. And yes, it surely reminds of The Company Band and even Clutch. But then we know why, don’t we? Just as it has some Fu Manchu takes here and there and faster paced Sabbath song rhythms. And there’s a simple reason for that as well. Yes. If ever there was a supergroup, it is this. I just can’t fathom why the album did not grab me right away back then. Cause it did now. But then again, this also happened with Graveyard’s Hisingen Blues back in 2011, which became my favorite album of the year very fast after that. And these cats are now doing the very same thing! It should have been higher on the list! Or did this happen to a lot of you freaks out there? It should have been higher! But that’s just my opinion… My late to the party opinion…

Number 7

Number 7

“The return of a very old brand of blended whisky from one of Canada's former biggest multi-nationals. Nose: Juicy, spicy rye grains, dried apricot, lemon curd, oak and gristy sweetness. Palate: Spicy and creamy, medium-bodied with honey, caramel and coffee. A touch of orange marmalade and panna cotta. Finish: Medium length, spicy and sweet.”

On Number 7 we find the final album that stays in close proximity to the ones that came before. Beating Truckfighters with one simple point these cats have been surfing the desert and stoner waves for a damn long time now and the release this year is their eleventh album. No Swedes this time, but Californian stoners that go big the way of the fuzz and crackling and crunchy when it comes to the punchy riffs. And then there are those punky elements and dreamy moments that make it all come together like a perfect ride. Southern coolness amongst hot and heavy breezes…

Fu Manchu – Live at the O2, Islington, London

Fu Manchu – Live at the O2, Islington, London
24th September 2014

Looking like grizzled viking surfers, Fu Manchu hit the stage with an almighty rendition of “Eatin’ Dust” and immediately showed their intent of bringing the desert sounds to grey London. The sound was immense, with a skilfully balanced PA split for the guitars meaning that rarest of rare events – I could hear every member of the band perfectly. A trio of new songs from “Gigantoid” followed and proved that their songwriting is as strong as ever as they slotted in like old friends. The guys were on fire and really seemed to be enjoying themselves. Going back as far as “In Search Of”  (1996) to the new album gave the set a really powerful flow which just rocked. Heads nodding, fists pumping and drinks raised to the roof showed how much people were enjoying this. Relentless playing, razor sharp solos, laconic vocals and steamroller riffs gave this night a special feel. This was me first time in seeing these guys and I will now make sure to see them again when they hit these shores.
