Morning! It’s Monday over here and another dubious week ahead of us. Or perhaps yours look glorious? I hope so! For me the list below is glorious, and I guess that’s enough! We had a thoroughly busy week last week. But still managed to put up a few posts. And hope to do the same this week. We announced the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE of Plasticdrop’s new album Life, Death and Miracles, that will happen this Wednesday! And mentioned two singles, the new Katana and the new Kadavar. We also talked about two albums from 2024 that we thoroughly love and never got around to during that year. Which felt like something that had to be remedied! So, head over to the Volume and Duel reviews to see why! Glorious albums! Check’m out, check’m all out!

Duel – Breakfast With Death

Duel – Breakfast With Death
Heavy Psych Sounds Records – 2024
Metal, Stoner, Thrash
Rated: *****

Been having coffee, a boiled egg and freshly baked rolls every morning for the past months. And on all of those early morning meals I was joined by a smiling and courteous Grim Reeper. For mr. Death himself has been on the very best of behaviors ever since hearing the new amazing Duel album. It’s the perfect record from him. And yes, for me as well. That ferocious metal, the thrash influences, that sound so sweetly transported out of the glory days of the eighties. I love Duel. Ever since their first album Fears Of The Dead from 20216. Am happy to have seen them live at Helldorado Festival once.  Their Valley of The Shadows album ended up on the Number 5 spot of the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of  2019 according to all the votes that came in. And together with their 2021 In Carne Persona album they have all been on heavy rotation over here...

But nothing comes close to the manner in which I have been gorging on Breakfast With Death! The immediateness and intensity of it all keeps me coming back for seconds every morning of every day. They’ve punked out their stoner and thrashed their metal; and that instantly comes out blasting with opener Ancient Moonlight. That guitar tone, those drums, it burns, it sears and its only thanks to the dragging vocals that the speed with which it is delivered becomes palatable and the taste lingers. Especially since towards the end it all slows down, setting you up for the masterstroke that follows. Satan’s Invention, perhaps Duel at its most pop sensible, slower in riffs, gradual in drums, manages to combine every one of their strengths into a perfect delivery. And those vocals, the lyrics are so astute, but the magic is in the delivery, the rolling of the syllables that make Satan’s Invention undeniable and addictive. And that is once again so wonderfully off set by the most classic metal and thrash bridged Chaos Reigns track that follows. So scathing, so biting, aggressive and so full of powerful release. The guitar and drums, methodical, slaying and commanding, not giving any moment of respite until perhaps the wonderful solo that surfs on top of that maniacal thrash drumming. The vocals pulling you in and pushing you along, offering up the shout along on a silver platter. You will. You can’t help yourself. Even if the sun hasn’t yet risen. And all of that energy, all off those Duel strengths keep returning on all of the tracks that follow, and they close it all off with the incredibly gnarly, teeth baring, Greet The Dead and the knock out punch Burn The Earth. An opening salvo leads you to this anxious and tongue out groove that paves the way for another brilliant singalong chorus. Their most dynamic track on the album, switching it up, even in minute ways with every part of the composition. Ferocious and blistering, start to finish. As is the album. No better way to wake up. Listening to this will blast away every possible bit of a hangover. It will set your head right and the scythe will stay in a corner as you and Mr. Reeper grab another cup o’ joe, hit the repeat button and butter each other’s biscuit…

It’s Tuesday already… I know. Shit went to the crapper again over here. Rent paying work, family stuff, you know the deal. And it won’t be flushed for day or two. But here’s the glance back at last week. And if you weren’t there on Friday you could still head on back and listen to all those bands mentioned on the Quick Fire Friday segment or read any of the two amazing write-up’s Ronny delivered. He wrote something about the cool Rückwater and the funky Eight Foot Manchild. And how can we not profess our love for Planet Desert Rock Weekend, that amazing festival in Las Vegas in January 2025. Or the magic that comes to the Amsterdam stages through Love For Loud. Cause live music is the good shit!

A Monday that feels like a Sunday, thanks to a national holiday and a different kind of morning… An amazing and emotional night with Masters Of Reality and Alain Johannes last Thursday and a great evening filled with four bands yesterday. New Dutch bands Enma and Alternator opening up for Ruff Majik and Monkey3. And all of them delivering the goods! And thanks to my lovely wife, the Ruff Majik four got to crash reasonable comfortable on my living room floor… I hope it was reasonable at least… Just like I believe they weren’t too weirded out by that way too long story we wrote about Ruff Majik, there last album Elektrik Ram, the new single What A Time To Be A Knife, (which they played last night) and their touring life… A quieter week is forthcoming, so perhaps we can get more HiVe work done? We’ll see. But we did mention the new video by Coilguns and Horseburner last week. And ofcourse jotted down some words about the awesome new High Noon Kahuna album and breathtaking new Maragda. Be sure to check those out and be sure to check out the others in the Most Listened Last Week list… They all kick serious ass!

It’s Monday again! The Monday after Sonic Whip, still flying high from that festival. Man, what a ride! From the top of my head, amazing shows by Kadavar, Monolord, Minami Deutsch, Stoned Jesus, Delving, Kanaan, Domkraft, COFFIN, Full Earth, Dhidalah, Mojo & The Kitchen Brothers, Kintsugi Empire and many more! And now we’re preparing for an interview on Wednesday… And the Masters Of Reality concert on Thursday. Followed by Ruff Majik and Monkey3 on Sunday. And then a week or two later Freak Valley happens again. It might just be the best month of May ever! But due to all that and what came before we did not have that much time last week to HiVe. But stil, we did write about the Numbers 40 to 26 on the April Doom Charts, in what we like to call a Stoner Hype post. We also jotted down a few words about Nine Moons and Dätcha Mandala. Not sure what we can do this week. But I know for sure we’re doing another awesome Full Album Premiere again! More on that soon! Enjoy yer week and listen to the good stuff!

The show must go on… And so it does… Should we say a few words to mark the occasion? Or should we stick to what it’s all about, those heavy albums featured below? Let’s do just that! Here it is, the brand new Doom Charts. It’s the September 2021 edition and it once again heralds a truckload of great albums. We’ve got fourteen spanking new albums rolling into the Top 25 and a brand new Number One jumping in. There’s also the entry of the youngest fuzz cat to ever enter the charts and in total no less than 185 albums were voted for…

Personal votes went out to: Duel, Delco Detention, Stone Cadaver, Green Lung, Terminus, Sonolith, Kal-El, Miscellen, Taxi Caveman, Wolves In Haze & Land Mammal... And we will be listening to those and all the others in a row once again in the next few days… Although a minor ear infection might make me wait another day or two before commencing; cause at the moment everything sounds like it’s underwater… But as soon as we surface; we shall commence with the awesome Why We Never Die record by The Angelus…

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and album reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge metal, stoner-psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

Duel – In Carne Persona

Duel – In Carne Persona
Heavy Psych Sounds – 2021
Rock, Hard, Stoner, Garage, Metal, Doom
Rated: *****

During the past hellish months, where there was little time for poor old me to play outside, we’ve been lucky enough to have the new Duel album In Carne Persona on repeat. We’ve been anxiously awaiting this one, cause the one that came before called Valley Of Shadows was stunning and reached the Number 5 spot of the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2019 thanks to all you crazies that voted for it. Well, the Duel four are back and deliver their majestic super heavy tripped out old school stoner metal straight out of Austin, Texas once again. In Carne Persona features nine tracks that brings all that you have come to adore from Duel, but with even more seventies bravado and proggy swagger. Classic hardrock, early metal and something that sweeps up the ashes of what once was doomy and stonerish. But above all we hear seventies rock and everything proto in all its glory. So, yes, every old school metal head, hard rocking fiend and crazy seventies tambourine man will love the shit out of In Carne Persona. Duel seems to be able to do no wrong and everything right!

Number 5

Number 5

A bit more than fifty points are needed to jump from Monolord on Number 6 to reach this band and their album on Number 5. One that I had definitely not expected to end up this high. Yes, we dug it, we dug it a lot when it was released through Heavy Psych Sounds around the middle of May. But we just assumed all you crazies out there would be swamped with all the other great releases to forget about this one. “Their Old School Metal approach is heavy, hard, fast and addictive!” crazy cat of  doom, Sir Reek of STOOM wrote that back then and that it really and truly is. But a lot of that storming metal does border more on the hardrock side of it all and that age old sound. That sound from the gutter and from those marauding bikers back in the seventies. Yes, there is that proto-edge to everything they do and there is charging power to their riffs. This gallop and pounce, this wicked way of heavy metal release. And those riffs, guitarlines and coloring, we must confess, has gotten even more dramatic, intense and riveting on this album. Very catchy, very hooky and very big! Get loud with Number 5!

Helldorado

Helldorado!

The first edition was an absolute smash hit! Surrounded by scantily clad women breathing fire, wrestling their asses off and throwing knives; the entire outlook of the festival is grandiose. Much more carnival and much more colorful than the already legendary Speedfest was. Let’s hope this will have just as a massive run as the festival that came before. You could just as easily spend time watching the rock’n roll wrestling show; messing around with the crazy Mambo Kurt as you could be drinking yourself silly watching the most amazing bands. What a line-up!

Komatsu

The majestic Duel had the honor of kicking off this first edition. Sure, they entered the stage to just a handful of crazies in front of the stage. But soon; the Cobra stage was being watched by loads of people. And Duel did right by them. What a set and what a sound! A new fan for life was born with every song they played. This much is sure. When you play your home town it might be easy to let go of the reigns and slack off a bit. Komatsu is never one to cruise through their set; they had to pound everyone into submission with a very heavy and sludgy set. The first gig on the Tarantula stage was perhaps plagued with a few sound issues. On the other hand, it’s freaking Komatsu and they will level anything that stands in their way!

 Dead Lord

Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown brought us back to the Cobra stage to hear their eighties reminiscent, southern tinged rock brought forth with sheer perfection. It’s Aerosmith and Guns ‘n Roses; but different and more bluesy. We loved it! But not enough to keep us from heading back to the Tarantula stage again to hear the Swedes from Dead Lord hit us over the head with their Lizzyness hardrock. A quick hamburger before we had to see what kind of ritual La Muerte had in store for us. And an unholy ritual it was! Candles, incense and an intense wall of smoke masked the band as they threw us their wicked rock. Sure, there were some jokes here and there about the burlap sack the vocalist was wearing. But hey, it’s almost 5th of December over here…

Kid Congo

Tigre Blanco and his gypsy soul brought us down to earth and gave us some air to breathe, and we must confess, chat with long lost buddies. (Hope you got home safe Schnaps!) One of the best shows of the night started right after this. Monomyth, now with Boudewijn Bonebakker (Gingerpig, Gorefest), gave us a grand adventure. Can you imagine, thousands of speedrockers and drunken crazies all standing still with mouths wide open listening in awe to all the spacey goodness Monomyth brings. Well, it happened, they mesmerized the entire venue. Wild man Kid Congo and his Pink Monkey Birds then turned everyone out and on back on the Tarantula stage. He is without a doubt a true legend, and even though it was clearly not everyone was immediately smitten with the maestro. The ones that were saw a wild and wonderful character creating an entirely new universe!

Imperial State Electric was perhaps the least interesting show of the night. Unfortunately, every song they sent out into the venue from the Lion stage seemed to be bland and drowned out in fact, by all the screams and shouts in the crowd. And they were not shouting at or rooting for the band. But at each other; acting crazy and seemingly crazier by the minute. Which we all know would only grow louder and weirder as the night progressed. We should go back to Birth of Joy who were tearing it up on the other stage. But as mentioned before; you meet a lot of old friends on Helldorado and you make even more new ones! Grin! Another one of those bands that delivered one of the best shows of Helldorado was: Orange Goblin. Massive! Truly and insanely massive! Unfortunately, we had to miss the last part because of a scheduled interview with Red Fang. Which went, let’s say, okay?! Grin…

Red Fang

We caught the last part Nashville Pussy and got liquored up to watch the Red Fang rampage after that. And yes, there they were, creating the largest pit up till then. Especially when Wires and Prehistoric Dogs hit the crowd. As if all those older dudes and few women had been waiting until that moment to go absolutely berserk. What a wicked set! After which the real shit took hold and the drinking got out of control and sent a whole freaking lot of us through a ghostly funhouse (a real one yes.) and we got out just in time for yet another wonderful show by powerhouse Triggerfinger. And that was the only freakin sad part about Helldorado. That the fun had to stop and that we now must wait a whole freaking year for the next edition!

Helldorado

Helldorado!

Only a few days to go to the first edition of Helldorado! The festival that, let’s not kid ourselves, is the continuation of what Speedfest already was. This time around it might even become crazier, weirder and more dangerous! With clowns, bearded ladies and knife throwers everywhere! Yes, it’s a rock ‘n roll freakshow! And what about that line-up! Bands like Triggerfinger, The Darkness, Red Fang, Orange Goblin, Komatsu, Duel, Monomyth, Nashville Pussy, Imperial State Electric, Big Business, Lords of Altamont, Birth of Joy, Tigre Blanco, Dead Lord, Mambo Kurt, La Muerte, Fifty Foot Combo and the amazing Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds! Throw in some other crazy stuff, comedians and travelling karaoke machines that might just show right behind you when you’re taking a leak and you know you are in for one hell of a ride! This might be worse than the Circus Circus on a Friday night in Las Vegas… Ooh yes! Way worse! Still a few tickets left! Go grab’m and join the freakshow!!!

Stoner HiVe's Top 5 Artists listened to last week

Stoner HiVe's
Top 5 Artists listened to last week:

Let’s not address the smoldering elephant in the room or state the obvious and just list the amazing bands we have been listening to the past days. Like the new Millionaire. In preparation for the interview with Timmy ‘Tipover’ Vanhamel the new album Sciencing has been on repeat like crazy. Also, because it is once again a damn fine album! Hey, and when Madman Tony Maim claims that the Machinations album by Hark is our salvation. Then we listen and keep on returning to its magnificent tunes. The new album Witchbanger by the heavy psychedelic rockers called Duel is once again filled with intense riffs and a dark and twisted take on everything proto. Released in November 2016 this Into The Storm album grabbed my attention thank to the title: Where The Merfalo Roam. Anyone referencing Oscar Zeta Acosta is alright in my book and can get a beer from my anytime. Especially when it is this fine piece of sludge metal and noisy doom. Ever since the amazing Doublestone we have been peaked again for anything Danish. And our wish is granted immediately with the amazing psychedelic trio named The Sonic Dawn. Into The Long Night, their fourth release, is everything you want from free freak styled acid rock and sixties garage. Wild, boisterous, swirling and intoxicating...

Don’t take the green acid though… That’s for the bassplayer!
