Stoner Hive’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner Hive’s Quick Fire Friday

Surprise! And not just for you crazies following the HiVe! But also for me, cause I had not expected the honorable Ronny Dijksterhuis to deliver another Quick Fire Friday round this fast! But it was suddenly there, slaved over during the night and sent before the sun rose. And you know what that means... Things will get hot and heavy from here on in!

What do you do when you want to promote as many great music as humanly possible? Well, you absorb anything that scratches your auditive senses, train yourself in the art of selective puking and spit out the things that might stick not only in your own brain, but also in the grey lump residing in the skull of all you innocent heavy underground lovers that happen to stumble across our little old blog or one of its social media pages. So, let's skilfully throw up another eight stains of semi-digested sounds at your feet and call it a new episode of Quick Fire Friday. Enjoy!

Miracle Blood - Blazing Entrails

Miracle Blood's 2024 album 'Hello Hell' got rave reviews all over the globe and their new single 'Blazing Entrails' is another slab of bludgeoning madness, combining noise, speedrock, stoner rock and punk with a singer that more that once makes Jello Biafra pop up in your mind.

Pharm - Crackhead Arachnid

Progressive alternative noise metal. That's probably the best way to describe Pharm's new single 'Crackhead Arachnid'. A highly technical wave of swirling glory that sticks a knife in you well-trained ear and then gives it an extra twist to let you know they mean business. But however complex and jumpy it gets, the song remains the focal point and the vocals are excellent. Arguably the best song released so far this year.

Seasick Gladiator - Unhinged EP

In the comments under the March Doom Charts post on Facebook someone suggested to check out Seasick Gladiator as they haven't made the Doom Charts yet. As I never heard of the band before, I gave their latest EP Unhinged (released in January this year) a go. And I'm a bit ashamed not having discovered them earlier, because this is some tasty stoner doom with an interesting twist with the lead instrument being an atmospheric violin played in a manner that's quite similar to the one on My Dying Bride's standout album 'The Angel and the Dark River'. Add that to the powerful, traditional stoner setting of drums, bass and guitars, and you end up with a damn fine release that's different from anything else in the genre.

The Fixed Trio - Love. Fever. Blues.

When heavy blues has got that slow, dragging swagger with a stripped-down stoner rock undercurrent, it means it's good. The Fixed Trio's second single of their upcoming sophomore album 'Our Guilty Pleasure' has all that and more. A steady beat, a nicely rolling bass line and a great guitar solo make this a perfect tune for this time of year where nature comes alive again and the sun is making its way back from a long winter's sleep.

Ape Amp - Worse

Two Russian refugees, living in Bordeaux, France with one obvious mission: deliver some filthy and nasty sludge noise. Their first ever release is the single 'Worse'; a big ball of anger, bouncing off the cliffs of desperation. Wonderful indeed.

Tidal Wave - Sideburns

By now you might ask yourself: what about some good, old-fashioned Scandinavian stoner rock? Well, we're happy to oblige and present you Tidal Wave's new single 'Sideburns'. It's so goddamn catchy and full of energy, you probably don't want to hear you'll have to wait until June 5th for the arrival of their new album 'Volume Three', which will be released through Ripple Music.

Stump Grinder - Forest Metal

Coming from Santa Cruz, CA, Stump Grinder delivers a furious mix of stoner, sludge and hardcore that will knock your teeth out. No other words needed to give you an impression of their music. But one advise could come in handy: be sure to make an appointment with the dentist before listening to this shit, because you might regret it if you don't.

Lior Izhaki Drums (feat. Guy Strier) - Dabur

During the 12 day war between Israel and Iran in June 2025, while having to hide in a bomb shelter, Israeli drummer Lior Izhaki turned one of them into a live creative space. He recorded ten different jam tracks with ten different guitar players. No vocals, no bass and no rehearsals. The results are being presented one by one, showcasing the raw intensity that situations like this are obviously bound to summon not only in the hearts of creative people, but to everybody who is involved in that kind of drama one way or another. The creative people are merely able to give those feelings a voice, or in this case a pure heartfelt explosion of drums and guitars. Oh yeah, 'Dabur' is number 8 in the line of 10 and the heaviest and most aggressive one of them all.

Stoner HiVe's Quick Fire Weekend

Stoner HiVe's Quick Fire Weekend

As you know, sometimes, we need to keep that fire burning! The lava flowing! And dance upon the ashes of all who do not understand what Heavy Music means to us addicts. So, this here, is the start of another Quick Fire Weekend! Meant to spread the word on all that good stuff out there! And we know… There is so much out there, so much good and heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. But here it is… Another Saturday edition of a Stoner HiVe Quick Weekend! And it burns hot like molten lava!

The Bad Electric - Happy Endings Are Overrated

Out since yesterday, Happy Endings Are Overrated by Swansea, UK foursome The Bad Electric. They call it robo punk and sends shockwaves of super sparkling synth work towards you, coasting on an energetic layer of dirty riffs and intense drums. And after hearing these five tracks, we reckon The Bad Electric, should go on tour with the Electric Six and merge some nights, when the moon is full and the crowd extremely wild, into the The Bad Electric Six. Why not? It could happen!

The Magic Bus – Yarem Yarem

Yesterday we mentioned Beyond The Earth, but there's another project from many of the same members called The Magic Bus. My Greek is still limited to saying thank you, greeting a good day and ordering drinks. O’ and asking for the bill, but why on earth did I ever learn that? But for The Magic Bus you would want to learn more. Yarem, Yarem, is a poem set to music, and part of every poem’s charm is that it’s open to many interpretations! In the band’s mind it is an ode to the fragile but beautiful essence of love through time and hardship. Well, I guess I need to learn more Greek. It seems like a good idea to do this. It seems like a very good idea.

Sun Q – Myth

You will immediately be sucked into the Sun Q universe with that bluesy album opener Jane Doe. Heading straight for the heart of Myth, a nine track collaborative album by musicians and specialists from various countries. Recorded in Russia, in different studios in search of rare Soviet synthesizers, vintage tape instruments, and anything that could enhance the sound. A diverse array of musicians contributed to the recording, enriching the songs with vibrant strings and brass sections, not to mention unique instruments from all over the world, like Swedish nyckelharpa and African percussion. They even got three different choirs from Russia, USA, and Uganda. If that is not enough to make you check out Myth, here’s one more to get you on board: it might be all over the place, but there’s magic everywhere, and in short: it’s awesome!

Pharm – The Tower

Vortex was on heavy rotation about a year ago, and the new three track EP The Tower has followed suit the past month. It’s the new Pharm three track, EP, filled with hyper prog,  manic, funky and possibly insane. And that’s not just because it opens with a title called: Infinite Stairway to Madness. Frantic and break neck break back breaks. It’s Pharm and you simply need a dose of this from time to time to get your head working in the right order again!

WIJ – Oko

Out December 15th on Piranha Music, the new WIJ album Przestwór. And Oko is the first single for this. There are moments when you think this is how Go A should sound, but then you immediately think, no, this is how they could never sound, cause WIJ is way more special. It’s a track you need to put on repeat and listen to the entire night, while typing away frantically at some stream of consciousness poetry about a dystopian society in the future where you are continuously watched by a hovering eye behind you… Or that might just be me?

Hypnosaur - Inwazja z Plutona

Out since December 5, the cover version of Kombi’s Inwazja z Plutona by Hypnosaur! Remember that awesome Doomsday album from 2022? Already highly eclectic, this one cover shows us once again that Hypnosaur can do whatever that beast wants! Stonerizing some synth-pop track from the eighties? Sure, Hypnosaur doesn’t even break a sweat! And that video! Haha, awesome!

Polyfrenetics – DecayDecayDecay

Polyfrenetics is a three headed troll out of Oslo, Norway who thinks intergalactic sack rock is the best invention since canned beer.” And they’re right of course! And they’ve released their third EP DecayDecayDecay back in October. Six songs about Decay and… err… Love… Or something... Psychedelic punk, stoner prog, it moves in circles, add some space rock and a lot of canned beer, and you know that this third EP by Polyfrenetics is another one of those heavy rock treasures that needs to be discovered by one and all!

Throe - O Enterro das Marés

Throe is first and foremost the experimental, ambient, post rock and metal project by multi-instrumentalist Vina. Also a member of Sao Paolo instrumental rock band Huey, the Brazilian explores limits and endings in this ode to finitude called O Enterro das Marés. In this almost thirty-minute-long exploration we get treated to a white-out level of ambient and post rocking beauty, as well as industrial and noisy blackening. Limits are tested, implosion possible, by depths and ranges…

Pharm – Vortex

Pharm – Vortex
Self released – 2022
Rock, Stoner, Prog
Rated: ****

Many moons ago, before the war in the western world started, we mentioned the first single Acolyte by Canadian three-piece Pharm. And now, only about a week ago, they released their full-sized debut Vortex. A wild maelstrom of heavy rock! Based on stoner and prog their constantly shifting brackets between which the three go crazy, let them implore every imaginable source of heavy rock. Often bewildering the amount of weird memories about other bands and albums that might pop up, if only for a second. Prog rock legends will come to mind, but so will Baroness, Umphrey’s McGee and Primus. Pharm is serious business, but within the cluster of ideas, the fusing element is always the energy conveyed. Offering the option to experience Vortex as a state of being. Where the two interludes offer a moment of ease, a peaceful moment in the eye of the storm. But those are short moments of respite between the stupefying amount of guitar work, masterful bass and insane drumming that all have this dizzying effect. And not just because there’s so much of it, but because it is this good. So much beauty shines through in all those highly dynamic, only seemingly chaotic tapestries of prog compositions, that you might avert your eyes at one point because it feels like you are starting directly at the heart of the sun. Opener Acolyte and following Conqueror are already freaky highlights, but Device, with its tolling bell, its punk energy sets you up properly for the Vortex ride. Crystal Ships goes absolutely bonkers with the shifts and breaks; and that middle part, yowzah! Orbiting The Vortex ends the album properly, with a nine-and-a-half-minute tour de force, showing you once again what Pharm can do before they close it all off with this weird two-minute-long ditty called Thanks. Pharm is serious business, but there’s enjoyment here as well, and I guess Thanks showcases this best. The end of a nutty, quirky, and dazzling carnival ride….

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Weekend

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Weekend

And here it is! The second day of the second ever Quick Fire Weekend! Just because we got so much back catalogue of singles, ep’s, news and weird stuff that we just want to mention. And we know, we know, the albums and bands deserve more than the few words we will jot down here. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The second ever Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Weekend! And it burns even hotter... Hot like molten lava!

Moonworshipper – 13 Fullmoon Nights of Doubt

The beginning of the 21 minutes long 13 Fullmoon Nights of Doubt track definitely grabbed me. That voice, the guitar, the atmosphere painted… And they immediately lose me when the black metal guttural screaming begins… Moonworshipper has everything going for them; and I love everything about it… Except from the pitch of the guttural screams… But everything else; damn fucking interesting!

Pharm – Acolyte

Pharm from Canada released their first single Acolyte somewhere around the third week of December 2021. Prog, stoner and psych all rond into one nice and constantly tempo shifting hardrock. The trio will definitely turn your head or possible break it! More to come soon, cause they’re working on a full length debut… Wild!

Roadkillsoda – Loud & Proud

Loud & Proud premiered on the 666MRDoom Channel on my birthday back in 2021. And it’s the new single of the upcoming EP by the Rumanian quartet Roadkillsoda. Still that good old Roadkillsoda sound, heavy metal, hardrock with punk, grunge and stoner edges. Loud & Proud indeed!

Her Highness – Visions of a Lower Life

I love Hungary and I love Budapest. And I can definitely feel something for the instrumental doom/sludge project Her Highness and their newest release on the Addicted Label called Visions of A Lower Life. Six tracks of doom metal that slowly but surely will beat the crap out of you; or at least makes you drift off into a state of weary unconsciousness. A duo of full on doom!

Cavem3n - The Stalefield incident

The Stalefield Incident is a highly enjoyable diesel blues album. Indeed, the band is called Cavem3n, they hail from Lysekil, Sweden and produce some fine hardrocking blues, touches of stoner, a bit of a grunge and a whole lot of attitude. The quartet knows how to riff, wail and retro rock ‘n roll the shit out of you! Damn fine incident!

The Paladin – Demo

They hail from that lovely town of Helsinki, Finland. They’re three honorable warriors - seekers, questers, and crusaders of mad chivalry. They’re The Paladin. And this is their first two-track demo and delivers heavy rock, heavy metal, stoner, doom and everything in between. Two tracks, sixteen minutes and all of it damn interesting! Let’s hear more o’ honorable Paladin!
