FULL ALBUM PREMIERE - Mörkekraft - Fragments

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE

Mörkekraft - Fragments

From the cold southern coast of Norway comes Mörkekraft, a three-man force forging heavy rock like iron in a storm-lit fjord... There's something very special about the Mörkekraft three. But you already knew that, cause you've had their Follow The Spiders single on repeat. Right? Well... Today, right before the full Fragments album is released through Octopus Rising / Argonauta Records tommorrow, we are honored to bring you ALL of the singles! That's right... We're honored to bring you the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for Mörkekraft's Fragments

An album that drives hard on all that seventies classic rock, filtered through modern stoner and psychedelic sensibilities. Just open the album, just Follow The Spiders. That opening track, what a battering ram! It creeps, it crawls and it moves every bone in your body! And the entire Fragments album is packed tightly with thick, fuzzed out riffs, grooves straight out of the golden age of rock and a warm analog sound that makes it all feel like a fireside saga sung beneath those northern skies. Fragments rolls forward on those colossal Sabbathian riffs, but the tundra haze is never far away. Echoes of wandering space rock and bluesy laments are woven into the album's muscular stride. And then there are those short moments of more pop sensible, ballad opting songs like Godspeed. Delivered with euqal intensity and cavalier emotions. Turning it all into sun beam bursting through the clouds. Why  yes, they've managed to capture all those dark forces and transform it into something that will induce euphoria. They've found that ancient root somewhere on the road and knew that they had struck gold. Just imagine those candelit taverns where ancient spirits still whisper and you can see the Mörkekraft three listening...

Now it's your chance to start listening... To that golden hued rock of Fragments, brought to you by the Mörkekraft three!

PR Wire:

Mörkekraft – “Fragments”

Mörkekraft are a Norwegian heavy rock trio blending heavy rock, stoner and psychedelia into a sound defined by massive riffs, atmospheric depth and emotional weight. Often described as “a depressed Thin Lizzy,” the band combines strong melodic sensibility with a darker, introspective edge. Their debut album, “Fragments,” was recorded at Bridge Burner Recording in Stavanger across two sessions in January and May 2025, capturing both a colder, more restrained tension and a more dynamic, expansive approach. Engineered by Ørjan Kristoffersen Lund and mastered by Steven Grant Bishop, the record presents a cohesive and immersive sonic identity. Inspired by northern landscapes and shaped by themes of human struggle, inner conflict and the search for meaning, Fragments moves between heaviness and introspection, balancing fuzz driven riffs with melancholic melodies and a strong atmospheric presence. Across eight tracks, the album explores contrasts between light and darkness, instinct and control, delivering a debut that is both powerful and emotionally resonant.

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE

White Tundra - Stories From The Dark

The time has come! As we mentioned on Monday, today is the day we get to PREMIERE for you all the FULL ALBUM by Norwegian fourpiece White Tundra! It's called Stories From The Dark and it's brooding, menacing and full of dread... For Stories From The Dark creeps in like those eyes that watch you through those frozen woords, that glint you think you see just beyond the firelight. And as the storm approaches, you can feel the storm growing with each crushing riff and shifting shadow. Their sound stalks and lunges, one more a heavy deliberate prowl, and the next a like a cosmic void pulling you under. And then those voices, snarling, chanting, grunting in Nordic tongue or English. And beneath all that massive weight, melodies flicker like dying embers... This is no ordinary album, hell no... It's a saunter through the dark, where every step feels thrilling and just dangerous enough you dare to keep going...

PR Wire:

Norwegian heavy voyagers White Tundra are back with their second full length album, “Stories from the Dark”, set for release on April 24th 2026 via Octopus Rising and Argonauta Records in deluxe vinyl and digital formats. The band also unveils their new single and official videoclip, “Kultarberget”, offering a first glimpse into the dark, atmospheric world of the album.

Formed in 2023, White Tundra emerged from the northern landscapes of Norway with a sound that fuses heavy atmospheric melodies, hypnotic grooves and a deep Scandinavian mystique. Their music drifts between desert rock energy, doom laden textures and Nordic folklore inspired narratives, balancing the raw power of 70s hard rock with modern stoner and dark rock influences. Often compared to Red Fang, Witchcraft and Skraeckoedlan, the band maintains a unique identity that is unmistakably their own.

Following their acclaimed self titled debut album in 2023, which secured a place on the Doom Charts, White Tundra spent 2024 rebuilding their creative core. With the arrival of lead guitarist Kjell Andres Nilsen and bassist Øyvind Persvik, the band began crafting what would become “Stories from the Dark”. Recording took place at AutumnSongs Recording Studio with producer Rhys Marsh, who also worked on the debut album, and mastering was completed by Joona Hassinen at Studio Underjord.

White Tundra share:

“We started working on this album early 2024 when Kjell Andres joined on lead guitars. He had been piling up ideas for a while and came into the band with fresh blood and energy. After a while, Øyvind joined on bass and we really started to focus on writing in the summer of 2024. Many songs were in the loop for this album, but we settled on these final six tracks as the ones who fit best together. The winter and spring were used for demoing and pre productions, and Ola recorded the drums in mid July. Bass, guitar and vocals were recorded during two consecutive weeks in August.

The music has partly been written after the lyrics, often starting with creating the chorus and main mood of the songs and building from there. Other songs were partly finished musically before the lyrics fell into place. Ola wrote all the lyrics, with help from singer Steven to adapt them to the music. Thematically it takes off where the previous album ended, with lyrics about escaping from society, exploring the unknown and incorporating local folklore. The closing track, White Tundra, attempts to capture the entire soul and journey of the band, from desert rock inspiration to the white, stormy tundra.”

Tracklist
Healer 04:43
Huset 05:38
Riderless Horse 06:51

With “Stories from the Dark”, White Tundra deliver a cohesive, immersive experience that cements their place as one of the most compelling voices in the modern heavy underground. White Tundra – Stories From The Dark

White Tundra – Stories From The Dark
Octopus Rising / Argonauta Records – 2026
Metal, Stoner, Sludge, Doom, Prog
Rated: ****

It’s sludgy, it’s got razor sharp teeth, its menacing, it has style up the wazoo and we are honored to have the new White Tundra album Stories From The Dark as a Full Album Premiere for you all this Wednesday! That’s right, the Norwegian four are back! We mentioned their Honningfella release back in 2021 but should have mentioned their 2023 self-titled album as well. Both have that special edge to it, making you bit scared as well as very excited to be listening to it! Well, be sure to come back on Wednesday, if you dare, cause you will be hearing the full Stories From The Dark album here first!

Stories From The Dark kicks open a frozen door with the single Healer and drags you into the storm that blasts across the tundra. Which is followed by Huset, riffs heralded by the drums, immediately become as thick as molasses, fuzz-soaked and all of it rumbles like thunder closing in fast. And then it opens up, everything stretches outwards, and turns into a swirling expanse, where time feels optional and the sweat will be running down your back. One moment you’re locked into a swaggering, groove-heavy stomp, the next, you’re drifting through cosmic haze, guitars spiraling and bending as if pulled by some unseen gravity and a momentum that will surely send you whirling back towards that groove.

It’s what they do best, White Tundra craft a dense, riff-driven sound that fuses the weight of doom and stoner metal with the color and sprawl of psychedelic and progressive rock. Their music leans heavily on fuzz-drenched and sludge guitar tones. But there are always those groove-centric rhythms, and a raw, unpolished edge that keeps everything feeling immediate, visceral and slightly menacing.

Like a wolf grinning from the dark, there’s a wildness to it all. Vocals snarl, chant, grunt and beg to be howled along with. Beneath the noise, though, rising from the dark, there’s craft: hooks buried in distortion, melodies glowing through the murk, and a deep-rooted love for heavy rock tradition and a progressive edge that gives the right amount of atmospheric story telling. Just listen to the opening section of third track Riderless Horse for instance. Elements of classic heavy rock and Nordic atmosphere seep through, giving their sound a windswept, ghostly quality. Fitting for that track, but bleeding through on more moment throughout this magical album.

Vocals in both Norwegian and English, vocalized by a duo of voices, implore you to shout along or sound like a shadowy ritual. The gravel voiced prophets know exactly how to hit the right moments as they shell out their sermons across all the thunderous tones and grooves. It’s all walking a tightrope between hypnotic communion and creeping deception, dark Nordic woods are conjured and all those magical whispers will linger, like ominous echoes that both entice and unsettle. Do you dare to wander through all these Stories From The Dark?

Fuzzing Nation – Monstertruck

Fuzzing Nation – Mothertruck
Argonauta Records – 2026
Stoner, Rock, Metal, Fuzz
Rated: ****

You might start thinking that we’ve turned into an Argonauta Records promo site soon enough, cause we’ve been working on quite a few reviews of albums released by that label or their imprint Octopus Rising. Shit, we even have one or more PREMIERE’s for albums from them coming up. But it can’t be helped, they’ve been releasing grade A stuff of late! And well, actually, always. And yes, there are more labels in our cozy little Heavy Underground that all do stunning stuff. And we hope to review all of those too! But there are only 24 hours in a day, and the album reviews soon to be published just caught our ear and got our fingers itching…

And itching to get behind the wheel of a Mothertruck! Speed out through the desert, stereo blazing some sandy stoner and filthy fuzz! For today we want to mention the Greek trio Fuzzing Nation! We mentioned their Into The Desert EP from 2024 during a Quick Fire Friday segment and kept our ears open for more of their moving grooves. And move it does! Shit, my fingers move out of their own accord across the keyboard ever since they heard the Mothertruck engine roar!

For Mothertruck roars in like a supercharged war rig, cresting the dunes, all chrome glare and burning the horizon. With these three Greek crazies behind the wheel and no intention in hell of slowing down! A high speed desert pursuit, the spirit of post-apocalyptic wasteland fury distilled into molten riffs and weaponized groove! And in between it all, the band builds a sound that feels equal parts gasoline, fire and defiance!

The tracks surge and collide like badland convoy clashes, with hypnotic , heat warped passages giving way to explosive bursts of punk fury and doom soaked weight, all fuzzed out, as the new commonwealth is known for. And then there are tracks like The Open Wound or The Elder’s Code, which are here to fracture the landscape into something stranger and more dangerous or danceable. While Dead Old Tree, stuck in the middle of those two, just lumbers forward like a rusted engine on the brink of collapse. But everything, always, brought to you in a savage, loud and wild style! As we might have said it before, and borrowed from the famous Doctor, this is the kind of music that will make your machine drive another hundred miles with the gasoline meter on empty…

TarLung – Axis Mundi

TarLung – Axis Mundi
Argonauta Records
Doom, Metal, Sludge
Rated: ****

As the ash choked sky begins to fall, Axis Mundi rises like a cracked world-pillar, binding the underworld’s weight to that small glimmer of light that remains above. And TarLung are the sculptors of said pillar. A monument, hewn from sludge, doom and slow burning revelation. Each of the eight track feels like a decisive step along a vertical journey. Descending and ascending all at once, suspended, between ruin and resolve…

For those of you who follow the Doom Charts found the album ranked at Number 12 on the January 2026 edition. But as Static Noise opens the gates, one will immediately feel justified in thinking it should have been much higher up. What begins as a distant rumble, the grinding, stone against stone, slowly grows into something colossal and perilous. Slowly, but surely, the riffs gather mass, stone becomes a lava flow, tectonic plates lock together and then, as everything shakes and shudders, the earth finally gives way. Philipp Seiler’s voice emerges from the depths, charcoal, burned to a cinder, guttural, feral yet measured. And beneath, the drums move like a guiding hand on the great wheel of power, exact moments of crushing intensity alternate with a pristine knowledge to let the dust settle…

The axis itself, the very core of album, stands tall, Burning Out. Cleaner guitars shimmer like sunlight filtered through branches of the cosmic tree, offering a moment of peace and a different form or tranquility before the distortions drips down again, like sap turned into tar. Mournful melodies follow, with hushed voices that hover between despair and calm, like spirits whispering from below the surface. Or a more ritualistic groove takes over, riding the blackened dunes, before sinking into ceremonial collapse. And a more sway, waver and coil, suggesting rebirth through repetition…

And then there’s the closing title track, bringing the myth to its logical, but so wanted conclusion. Dragging itself forward like a wounded god, riffs oozing  and thick with finality and apotheosis, the sound becoming godlike itself. Until everything converges on the one and the pillar finally cracks… And between all that rumble, it all erects again. For it is within its collapse that TarLung has found its strange order. A way to turn the endlessly frayed, the chaos and the unkind into a new world. And that is the myth, a way to turn the down into up, and the paradox into logic. And with Axis Mundi it has found its way, this is the kind of doom that touches upon the ancient, but is meant for the ages, deliberate and enduring. Let it all crack open once again…

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE - Mount Palatine – Wormholy World

FULL ALBUM PREMIERE

Mount Palatine – Wormholy World

We've been teasing the release of this album ever since we wrote that little review back in early January. And finally, it is time! Time to envelop yourself in the Wormholy World! The first release by these Finnish three under their new name Mount Palatine! Out on Argonauta Records on February 6th... But worming you away and whirling you today on Stoner HiVe...

Rising from the wasteland like a knight from a sandstorm, Mount Palatine emerge with Wormholy World, a heavy psychedelic doom record that feels both mountainous and hallucinatory. Seismic riffs and molten grooves collide with melodic aftershocks as the band leans into longer forms, deeper atmospheres, and a new-found confidence. Meditative passages dissolve into sludgy gravity wells where songs rebuild themselves mid-collapse, nothing staying still for long. Themes feel eastern, abstract, yet deeply intimate, pulling you further in. Cinematic, daring, and unrelenting, Wormholy World marks Mount Palatine’s true form. . . Victorious, convicted, and unafraid...

PR Wire:

Wormholy World

Wormholy World by Mount Palatine is an ultimate trip through destruction and recreation, that is, the chaos of life and universe itself. Musically, the album builds on the psychedelic heavy jams of a trio that consists of Jean the Baron (Guitars), Count Boogie (Bass), and Lord of the Groove (Drums). Through years of ensemble playing, the trio has developed their signature style of heavy psych metal, which combined elements of doom, stoner, sludge, psychedelic rock, and progressive metal. As a result, these chaotic trips form into a cosmic dance, where brittle melodies break under crushing riffs, just to be reformed again into triumphant harmony. Likewise, the vocals vary from ethereal choirs to heavy growls.

In the vein of their debut album “Cockroach Crusade” (self-released under the name The Paladin), Wormholy World was born from intense jam sessions, shaping a sound that is both cohesive and expansive. All songs have been created and arranged through continuous jams and iterations, and caught on tape in a similar fashion; via live-recordings of the band playing together in their own rehearsal place and home studio at Saarni Music. On top of these jam-like base tracks, layers and layers of additional guitars, synths, sound effects, and vocals have been stacked, until the songs have reached their final cosmic level envisioned by the collective mind of the band. The final, magic touch on the audio track was added by Mactus the Magemaster from Saarni Music, breathing life into it, making it sparkle with cosmic glister.

While the debut explored a wide array of influences, this album moves ever more clearly toward the band’s chosen path and artistic vision, bringing a stronger sense of cohesion to their evolving style. Mount Palatine’s Wormholy World is something that might resonate with fans of bands like Elder, Stoned Jesus, Mastodon, and Down without sounding directly like any of them, yet perhaps a little like all of them combined. With the album, the band continues to carve their own distinctive niche in the landscape of modern heavy psychedelic metal.

Band biography

Mount Palatine is a heavy psych metal trio founded in Helsinki, Finland. Built on years of playing together, the band thrives on long-form jamming, through which raw improvisational pieces are transformed into towering compositions. What began as a reunion of old bandmates for casual jamming in the year 2020, soon developed into a collective musical entity with relentless creative force.

The lineup consists of Jean the Baron (guitar & vocals), Count Boogie (bass), and Lord of the Groove (drums). Together they channel their unique chemistry into sprawling songs that range from crushing sludge-laden riffs to hypnotic psychedelic textures, from screamed vocals that tear through the void to ethereal clean melodies that linger like echoes from another realm. The result is an immersive soundscape that is as punishing as it is transcendental — heavy but never static, spiritual yet grounded in groove. Drawing inspiration from across genres, Mount Palatine weave elements of doom, stoner, progressive metal, psychedelic rock, and beyond into a sound unmistakably their own.

Originally performing under the name The Paladin, the trio released their debut album Cockroach Crusade (2024), which laid the foundations of their evolving sound. As their style matured, the decision came to adopt a new name that would better reflect their unique identity. Thus, Mount Palatine was born — a symbol of rebirth, expansion, and the next stage of their journey. The band continues to operate from Helsinki.

Lyrically and thematically, Mount Palatine delves into cosmic and spiritual realms, examining existence, life, death, and the mysteries of reality and the universe, often flirting with religious and philosophical concepts. The result is music that resonates on both visceral and contemplative levels — an invitation to lose oneself in sound while reflecting on the infinite.

Mount Palatine is something that might resonate with fans of bands like Elder, Stoned Jesus, Mastodon, and Down without sounding directly like any of them, yet perhaps a little like all of them combined.

The band is now preparing to broaden its horizons internationally with their upcoming second album, Wormholy World that is released via the renowned doom label Argonauta Records. With crushing heaviness, visionary songwriting, and uncompromising energy on stage, Mount Palatine are carving their place in the evolving landscape of modern heavy psychedelic music.

Young old guys playing good old music.

Mount Palatine – Wormholy World

Mount Palatine – Wormholy World
Octopus Rising / Argonauta Records – 2026
Metal, Doom, Psych, Prog, Sludge
Rated: ****

A crusading force rises out of the wasteland like a sworn knight emerging from a blinding sandstorm. The dust cloud is dense, thick but through it you can see the outlines of a band called Mount Palatine emerging with an album called Wormholy World, here to stabilize the particles into one focused sphere. Once traversing that globe under the name The Paladin, the new name feels like a much better fit. For this heavy psychedelic doom sounds mountainous, concentrated yet hallucinatory and very strangely philosophical. As if they survived an apocalyptic event and learnt what’s truly important…

Seismic riffs and molten grooves, colliding with melodic after shocks as the horizon cracks and breaks. There’s a new sense of confidence here, as the band leans into longer forms, deeper atmospheres and a definite willingness to let things breathe and exhale before finally detonating. And even though there is still ground to gain when it comes to the vocals, the scorched-earth rasp has its moments and sometimes even seems to ground all the chaos with human pain and grit.

But as the record  unfolds, meditative passages blur and weave into sludgy gravity wells. And as those fragments float in and out of focus, songs almost seem to rebuild themselves mid-collapse. Nothing stays still for very long. Themes, eastern or abstract, yet always intimate and enticing. Luring you deeper into their world. A Wormholy World that feels like a half-remembered future or past, from a gone away world. A time where meaning still matters or mattered or will once have mattered.

And as you traverse their landscape, you hold on as the final stretch, embraces its cinematic scope with even more feverous energy and daring. Ever heavier, searing and stranger, with grooves that hit like collapsing structures and melodies that refuse to die down. They return over and over. Just like Mount Palatine themselves. For, Mount Palatine stand not as resurrected ghosts, but as warriors who have laid their former selves to rest. Having buried The Paladin, they rise without hesitation, declaring their true form, victorious among the fallen, unashamed, and crowned not by ego, but by conviction. Wormholy World is here to make you swim with the wind and peek behind the curtain…

And we are honored to host the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for Wormholy World on February 5th ! So check out the first two Mount Palatine singles today and return to Stoner HiVe on February 5th for the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE!

Dune Aurora – Ice Age Desert
Argonauta Records – 2025
Stoner, Rock, Desert, Doom
Rated: ****

The album comes out on Argonauta Records this Friday, the 21st of November! But if you, by any chance, stumble around Stoner HiVe this evening… Well now… You might just be treated to the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE of this wonderful new album called Ice Age Desert by Italian trio Dune Aurora

And on one such evening, not too long ago, drifting through the ether, I was introduced to Dune Aurora as well. A formidable trio from Turin, who are mysterious, indulgent and feel like a stoner rock band straight out of the romantic age. It felt like I was discovering a new and half-forgotten speakeasy glowing beneath the desert moon, which borrowed its atmosphere from the grand soirées of yore. And after later inspection, their EP Lonely Town already hinted at this promise. Raw but glimmering like the first spark of a champagne toast.

And now, three years later, with the clutter pared down and their vision sharpened, they arrive glowingly at their debut full length release Ice Age Desert, which announces itself like a cold wind sweeping across a ballroom left open to the night. A sound that has grown heavier, richer and perhaps more daring. Riffs rolling in a steady deliberate force. Confidently strutting about the place and leaving the flashy solos for others. With vocals, floating clean and cool above the grit, like silk brushing softly against steel.

A brisk, blues-tinged flourish opens the album, ushering the listeners into a frozen dreamscape. Followed by a track filled with groove and raw swagger. And then comes Dune Chameleon, which slips in a sly familiar riff, echoing youthful rebellion beneath all the frost. Momentary flashes of doom might pop up here and there but are often swept to the side by something sharper. And then there’s Sunless Queen, which broods with a patient and regal menace.

But what dazzles most perhaps, is the cohesion.  Their kaleidoscopic sounds of desert haze, garage rumble and ethereal melody are woven together with such deliberation, that the tapestry they create feels complete and beautiful. A pure and bold statement, as though Dune Aurora has stepped confidently onto a vast glittering stage and claimed it as their own…

Bentrees - Silver Veins

Here we are! And absolutely psyched and honored to present you all with, the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for the brand new Bentrees! It's called Silver Veins and will be out on Argonauta Records this Friday, 17th of October! A grand album that takes the listener on an adventure, on a journey inwards. Get comfortable, sit down, lie down, get those headphones out. Press play and close your eyes...

Read the Full Review for Bentrees - Silver Veins HERE

PR Wire:

After a short hiatus from the studio, Sardinian stoner/psych duo Bentrees are back with a brand new single, “The Sky Never Dies”, out now via Argonauta Records. The track marks a powerful return for the band and offers the first glimpse into their upcoming full-length album Silver Veins, which will be released later this year.

Known for their intense and soulful blend of 70s-inspired hard rock and 90s/2000s-style stoner vibes, Bentrees once again deliver a song that fuses heavy, fuzzy riffs with psychedelic textures, introspective lyrics and a raw, earthy energy rooted in their native Sardinia.

The band, formed in Iglesias in 2012 and restructured as a duo in 2014, is composed of Riccardo Podda (guitar, vocals) and Mauro Cocco (drums). Over the years, their reputation has grown steadily thanks to electrifying live performances and a unique sonic identity that draws from both desert rock tradition and a more personal, atmospheric storytelling approach.

They have shared the stage with genre pillars such as Yawning Man, Black Rainbows, The Cosmic Dead and The Spacelords, leaving a mark with their compelling presence.

“The Sky Never Dies” is more than a comeback. It is a statement of artistic growth, a bridge between the band's previous acclaimed album Two of Swords (2021, Argonauta Records) and what promises to be a daring new chapter.

Further details about Silver Veins, their third studio effort, will be announced soon. In the meantime, “The Sky Never Dies” is available on all major platforms and serves as a compelling invitation to step back into the vast sonic universe of Bentrees.

For fans of Yawning Man, Colour Haze, Brant Bjork, and psychedelic desert rock with a soul.

Bentrees – Silver Veins
Argonauta Records – 2025
Rock, Stoner
Rated: ****

You listened to The Sky Never Dies single yet? And were you immediately lusting after more Bentrees? After more of those soon to be released tracks on their new album Silver Veins? Well… Visit Stoner HiVe on Wednesday October 15th to hear all of them two days before the album is released! That’s right, we’re honored to host the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for the new Bentrees album Silver Veins and have been hooked on more levels than one to this new outing…

For some albums ask you to sit and listen, but Silver Veins, the third release of Sardinian psych-stoner duo Bentrees, asks you to take the journey inwards. From the first crackle of fuzz on The Sky Never Dies, it’s clear this isn’t just a rock record. It might function as a mirror. One that reflects the sky on the silvery surface below and shows that the landscape can be both external and emotional. Sardinia, with its sun bleached cliffs and windswept valley might have inspired the textures, but the landscape this albums saunters through is just as much about inner tension, duality and all those questions that live deep within our hearts…

Bentrees, Riccardo Podda on guitar and vocals, Mauro Cocco on drums, never overwhelm  you with their sound. Instead they carefully build a space.  Silver Veins flows like a thought process in motion. Slow, looping, reflective. The tracks all neatly nestled between roughly six to eight minutes, are never indulgent, but flow this way because discovery rarely comes in shorter bursts.

The opener unfolds gradually, letting the stoner rhythm and the ever present fuzz simmer while Podda’s voice, chased, haunted and deeply human, narrates the journey. The Sea follows with layers of sound that almost feel like a memory, abstract first, then gradually forming into something sharper and grounded. Resounding like a mirror, reflecting and turning not just into a song, but into a process and a shift in mindset.

The eight and a half minutes of Away, takes you away and with its enchanting opening, opens the door into whatever dreams may come. There is more motion and a rise of inner tension, but also those moments of calm, where you get to sail away with the tones. But it might be Alienated, that truly reveals the album’s core philosophy. Spanning seven minutes, it builds from ambient reflection to crashing intensity, perfectly capturing the mental dance between stillness and whirling winding storm. Hypnotic and insightful, the closing title track Silver Veins, does not necessarily opt for acceptance, or offers answers, but let’s the duality play out in sound one more time. And with those closing tones, Bentrees show that even stonerrock albums can be perfect for solitary walks, late night thoughts and moments when you are just trying to understand yourself just a little bit better. And the Silver Veins is here for you to listen and to resonate. In a genre known for volume, this under current of honesty seems to hit even harder.

Interview - Lorquin's Admiral - Dawn and Dandy Brown

Interview - Lorquin's Admiral

Dawn and Dandy Brown

She watches from the sides, spread out, somewhat seductively, on the leather couch, with eyes softly closing, loudly purring, signaling that its good… Or the little Bengal curls up in an almost hidden dead space, strolls along the cabinets and amps, without requiring much from the artists standing in the middle of the room recording the vocals. She gives them their space and is simply supportive of them with her presence…

Recording on those microphones, a lovely couple by the name of Dawn and Dandy Brown. The cat, Margot. The project, Lorquin’s Admiral… And as Margot gave her blessing to the recordings and championed the endeavor, so did Dawn and Dandy Brown…

We’re on Zoom with the two to talk about Lorquin’s Admiral, a project that sees the two shine as vocalists and the couple they obviously are. Competitive in games: “It’s been a long winter, but as soon as I have my service back, Dawn won’t stand a chance!” Collaborative in arts: “We can't help ourselves but to collaborate. We just enjoy it so much.”

And that last side is ever present, every day and is clearly audible on Lorquin’s Admiral. But let’s get one thing straight, it’s not Dawn and Dandy that started Lorquin’s Admiral. It’s a project instigated by Marlon King and Nick Hannon from bands such as Sons of Alpha Centauri and Yawning Sons. Who immediately thought of Dandy Brown as the main vocalist and songwriter companion for their project after already having delivered the goods for their 2021 Yawning Sons album Sky Island...

“They are such amazing songwriters. They called me up back then for the Yawning Sons album, if I wanted to perform, but I was in the frame of mind at that point, that I wanted to sing. I had been playing instruments on every record I had ever been on. They were cool with that, and when you hear it back, the playing, the production on that thing, they are tremendous at what they do. So we always kept that connection flowing, sending tracks back and forth. And you know, Dawn had done some background vocals on that Yawning Sons record as well. So, we suggested splitting the tracks between Dawn and me. We wrote a bit of music and melodies, but don’t play anything. We just sing. Then after a few months, the project took shape and turned into a family affair. I mean, Steve Earle (Afghan Whigs) is an amazing drummer and he has been with me for some twenty years, so I had to ask him. And Dave Angstrom, from Luna Sol, Supafuzz and Hermano, he’s a monster, just listen to his solos. Country Mark Engel, was with me on Orquesta Del Desierto, and brings all that natural feeling. It’s an ever growing family that has worked together for decades and are all in it for the love of it. It’s a cumulative process, engineering your craft, moving forward and always keeping a cohesive line throughout your body of work.”

It doesn’t take much to get Mr. Brown to talk about music, so it might be best to let him and Dawn ramble on…  It’s their tree of life after all and this album is another branch. “It’s been an integral part of my life ever since I can remember, you know. I love to dig into music. I love to play it. Look at the world around you. It’s such a depressing time for the world. Even though personally, there are so many great things happening for us. Those two sides collide. And music is always there. It’s sanctuary.”

“Such a powerful word choice,” Dawn chimes in, “cause it’s both sanctuary and therapeutic. It can put you in a very specific headspace when you’re exploring a certain musical landscape. It enables you to disappear into another world for a little while and forget your troubles. And we are awfully lucky, we realize this on a daily basis, for we share this passion together. My writing partner is here. All the time. That’s a beautiful experience.”

So, how does a normal day in the Brown residence look like?

Dandy: “Depends on what day of the week it is. We’re working stiffs. So, normally I’m at work, for a public entity, nonprofit, just helping the citizens of our city.”
Dawn: “I work in a camera lab as a technician. I do photo editing all day long. And when I’m done scanning film at work, I come home and scan my own film for another two hours.”

And music wise?

Dawn: “I've been playing music my whole life. It felt like a golden opportunity when we got together. I was like, well, I, I play music on my own and I write and I think that together it would be the perfect opportunity for us to just put two heads together, mm-hmm.”

Dandy: “And see what comes out of it. It just worked, it just fell naturally together. It wasn't long after we started playing tennis that our relationship started growing towards where it is now. And on that path and after many conversations, it was like, why don't we try to do something? Why don't we try to play some music somewhere? And I think within seven months of us being together, we had booked a tour in Italy and we did a number of shows acoustically. And we had just such a hoot of a time. We thought let's expand this. Let’s start doing it on electric and let's bring in a drummer and let's bring in a bass player and let's just see where we can go with it. We might not be that good, but we've done some interesting stuff. I think we've caught some ears along the way of folks who appreciate what we're doing. I mean we're definitely, uh, a little bit different and unique. And, we're just very lucky that other people have been interested in it and wanted to put out records for us.”

You are partners. Your creative partners. Does that make things easier or difficult when something doesn’t feel quite right, for instance?

Dawn: “I would say it makes things easier just because there's a certain level of trust. And so we know we're not going to violate that trust. If we want to express an opinion, whether it be, oh, I think perhaps these two chords might not really be in the vibe of the song that we're trying to go for. So maybe let's try a different set of chords. Or perhaps this word could be swapped out for this word.”

Dandy: “It eases the writing process rather than creating a barrier. Yeah, I think it makes it much easier. Being married and being in love with each other, there's just not a whole lot of egos in the room. When we're writing together, we know each other too well for that. Obviously, I've been in bands before and played with many musicians where you could get into a writing situation, where ownership over things that people don't want to give up on comes into play. People sometimes get frustrated that their ownership is being questioned in some way. But we just don't have that, you know? Strength of our love for each other. And that just spills over into the writing process between us.”

Dawn: “It's very easy for us. We'll get out of the shower and one of us will run over and write down some lyrics that we've thought of or, you know, bounce ideas off of each other. Continually, and trade songs back and forth. I'm stuck here. Can you take a look at this or vice versa? But really being open to it all since we know each other and we know each other’s styles so well and we've written together so much. Just knowing what fits where.”

Dandy: “You know, maybe I'll produce a riff and think, this is really one that Dawn should sing, or this is really one that she should write the lyrics for. It's like, let's share this between us and see what we come up with. And it works really well.”

So this record than has to open with a song called My Blue Wife, an in your face rocker, with of course Dawn as subject. But she answers that one with My Blue Husband, which is more of a sexy song. Did you surprise each other with these tracks? Or did you collaborate on those as well?

Dawn: “We collaborated as we do on everything.”
Dandy: “We can't help ourselves but to collaborate. We just enjoy it so much. I just thought, since we're both singing on this record and since we're splitting up the duties of singing, wouldn't it be a really cool thing as part of that kind of uplifting message that we were trying to pursue on this record, to sing a song to each other, about the connection between each other, and the passion that we share for each other. And the passion that exists in our lives. And it created just a certain level of dynamism on the record that I thought was quite essential to have.”

And then you went off to Kent to record?

Dandy: “After we did a European tour for the Fizz Fuzz project we stopped over in Paris, for a few days off and then flew out to Kent to record our vocals. Steve Earle had already recorded all the drum parts before us and we did our vocals in two to three days. With only a few minor overdubs from our own house. But pretty much what you hear on the record is what we did in Kent. It’s called Joplin House, it’s a tremendous facility, run by a guy named Dan Lucas, a genius engineer.”

Do you always work that fast and easy? Do you need the pressure? Cause we all know the stories about how hectic the recording days were for legendary Hermano… Or fabled Orquesta Del Desierto…

Dandy: “Haha, well in this case, we really didn't have much of a choice, right. Because our flight was leaving in a few days. So we kind of surprised ourselves at how well we pulled it off, over those three days. But yeah, just due to the limitations of time, we tried to, get everything as ready to go as we can, just because we don't necessarily have the benefit of being able to have a month in the studio. We usually only have a handful of days or a week and so we roll up our sleeves and get it done.”

Dawn: “Yeah. But we do take a little pressure off ourselves because we have a rig that works well enough here at our home. So, if something goes off the rails entirely and we know we can't use it, then we can always do tracks here at our house. But the material we cut for the Lorquin’s Admiral record; we surprised ourselves and we really knocked it out while we were there.”

Dandy: “And we were both sick. We were both sick like a dog. Steve Earle came off the tour with some sort of bug and he ended up passing it to us. So we got lucky to go into the studio completely congested, and we just swilled back some medicine and went for it. You know, with how well it turned out, maybe that needs to be our plan going forward.”

Dawn: “I think that contributed to the adrenaline in the studio. 'cause we were like, oh, I really hope we can get this take.”

It does seem to be a recurring theme with you Dandy because as I already mentioned you also recorded at the very edge of the needle with Hermano. So maybe you work well under pressure?

Dandy: “I do creative motivation. I do enjoy that. I do enjoy bringing people together. I do enjoy bringing them into an environment where maybe they are not a hundred percent comfortable. And they've gotta work on the edge and get the tracks done in the time they have offered. Hermano was perhaps one of the most mind blowing experiences of my life because none of those guys really knew each other until we walked into the studio. And I mean, literally, we did that first record, live, we just jumped on it. And from the very first note we played, it was: oh my God, this is tremendous. The tones and just the feel, you know, and we just looked at each other, we got something really cool on our hands here. It's like the variable X, that one undefinable thing that's in the air.”

That seems to be present on the track, Burn and Heel as well, with the different guitar lines and your more staccato vocals. How was that one born?

Dawn: “The story behind that song is kind of funny. I had rewritten it a number of times, and then the day before, the night before actually, we were back in our hotel room and I knew I had to get it done. That's how that variable X got in there because the timeframe in which the lyrics were written was very narrow. Maybe an hour or two. And he was asleep already. He was snoring away. And I'm just like, oh dear, I gotta drone this man out. And then suddenly it just clicked, maybe even thanks to his snoring.”

Dandy: “And the guitar parts were made up by Nick and Dave. Well, the core of the song was Marlon and Nick. And as far as the leads on that, you know, Dave Angstrom always takes anything he plays on to the next level. You know, he's my favorite lead guitar player out there. County Mark's way up there too, because of the feeling he can put into every note he plays. But Dave Angstrom has something that really nobody else has tone wise.”

Well, what is the most important thing Dave Angstrom brings to the table for you?

Dandy: “That tone, man. That tone and those chops. He's something else. It’s the aura of Dave Angstrom.”

So talking about all the members, let’s circle back. How do you think that variable X in the air felt for Nick and Marlon who brought this all together?

Dandy: “Nick Cannon. Marlon King. Those guys are, writing machines, and they write all different genres of music. They're really great at these beautiful soundscapes. But they can also contain it within certain limits with a kind of a pop element to it as well. Souding so appealing. It doesn't necessarily have to go into a heavy rock area or that atmospheric side of music. They can write anything in between. And it's just been a real thrill and honor to work with those guys. It has that level of contrast that people can be hungry for. You listen to a certain genre for so long and it can start to kind of blend together. But having different elements included, really sparks the energy.”

So I suspect this was all written over a longer period of time?

Dandy:  “Yeah, I think over about a year of passing material back and forth. And then the rest of it was just logistics of bringing people together. We just so happened to have done a Fizz Fuzz tour in Europe and it just kind of lined up with the end to jump into the studio. But those guys had never met Steve Earle and those guys had never met Country Mark or Dave Angstrom. So it was one of those instances where people come together that have never met each other before, and you got an hour before your track to get to know each other and then just, let's get it on. And man, I've had such luck working in that kind of atmosphere where people come together for the first time and there's just kind of a magic in the air. And I think this record is alive will all that electricity.”

It’s all that X again! Well, who invented the name in that case?

Dandy: “That was me. Whenever there’s a new band or project, I immediately start surfing around and pecking and hunting. And we made a list of probably thirty different names. And we just kept circulating those names and Lorquin’s Admiral was at the beginning of developing that list and every time we would add something to it or circulate those names, we just kept coming back to it. It just seemed like a name that had kind of a mystic feel to it. And a natural beauty to it, you know, it's the most beautiful butterfly. I'm sure a lepidopterist would maybe have a different opinion. They're native to Northern California and kind of rare.”

Dawn: “We don't see one often. I have seen one in the wild. When I was visiting down in the desert and I was just walking out into the Joshua Tree National Park. And I just so happened to see this little thing flutter by and land on a piece of dead grass. I'll be damned, that's a Lorquin’s Admiral. And I tried to take a photo, but I wasn't quick enough. We do have a prop one. We call him Quinnie.”

Dandy: “The butterfly fits the tenure of this project, this group. We kind of set out to write things this time that were more uplifting. With more positive messages behind them. Instead of anything that's kind of down or doomy or gloomy. I really wanted to focus on themes that were uplifting and hopeful.“

Uplifting and hopeful, let’s end with that… What was the most euphoric moment surrounding this record?

Dawn: “Well, haha, the most euphoric moment was when we were all crammed in that van in the UK and you had to learn how to drive on the other side of the road. And there's just a moment where everyone was like, your personal cheerleading squad yelling: “don't look that way” and “look the other way.” “You're supposed to look this way!” Cause yes, there were a couple of sketchy moments in there and it’s just the euphoria of missing death by a hair. Haha.”

Dandy: “When you receive the final master of something you've been working on for a long time and you get to hear it as it's going to be released, that's always a really tremendous moment. But there are so many euphoric moments making this record. Sending the material to Country Mark and having him send his tracks back, not knowing, what's this guy going to do. And to hear that for the first time and be like, whoa! It's like opening up a present. You know, that feeling, butterflies in the stomach…”
