Stoner HiVe's Quick Fire Weekend

Stoner HiVe's Quick Fire Weekend

What is this that stands before me? It’s one of those fabled Quick Fire Weekends! That’s right… You knew about those Friday sessions, but once in a full moon, and all the planets align, this thing might just happen. A Quick Fire Weekend! Meant to spread the word on all that good stuff out there! And we know… There is so much out there, so much good and heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. But here it is… Another Saturday edition of Stoner HiVe's Quick Fire Weekend! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Molior Superum – Spegeln

We love Molior Superum! And have loved these cats ever since Myspace was still a thing! So, when they shoved Spegeln our way, we had it on repeat in no time! Exceptionally groovy, powerful, energetic and riveting! It’s the first single for the Från Gryning till Skymning album that will be released somewhere near October/November. What a blast off for this Quick Fire Weekend! Spegeln is high-voltage seventies psychedelia, blues-drenched stoner rock and grimy garage swagger all melted into a wild, groove-heavy sonic assault. Fueled by frantic vocals, explosive riffs and relentless boogie rhythms, their sound feels both vintage and dangerous. Like a lost rock classic detonating in real time through blown-out amplifiers!

Méchant Colosse - Big Au Japon

This new single will hopefully also be added to their bandcamp site soon. Bass and drums doom duo from the Canadian wastelands of Montreal, Québec. It’s Méchant Colosse and the four track EP this track will be featured on is set to be released after the summer. Sludgy, doom metal that has a certain 'je ne sais quoi'. Mysteriously good, and apparently big in Japan!

Bog – Incubant

There are many bogs around the world and many are worth it to get totally stuck in! But the new four-piece from Ghent, Belgium mixing post-metal, sludge and heavy psych is definitely the kind of quagmire to fall in love with. They make it swampy, or use their aggressive side or let it all escape the murk and have their melodies float above the treacle… This Bog is good!

Godzilla In The Kitchen – Nothing For None

The new Godzilla In The Kitchen album will be out on Tonzonen Records somewhere in October. But right now you can join the rampage with the first single Nothing For None! Ever more proggy, ever more metal, it is their alternative groove that will surely pull you in. And with the bass player stepping up to do the vocals Godzilla has turned into a smoke-belching beast, high on stoner grooves, progressive detours and furious social paranoia. Simon Ulm howls from the eye of the storm while the riffs grind forward like riot tanks through a psychedelic fever dream!

Her Name Was Fire – Obsidian Light

I miss Portugal often. Lisbon as well. All my times there was pure fire. So I get the name! An EP filled with fuzzed-out grooves, swaggering hooks and amplifier smoke pouring from every crack. Her Name Was Fire rides the line between Queens of the Stone Age cool and psychedelic overload, whipping massive choruses into a wild, sweat-soaked heavy-rock communion. And there’s only two of them!! Wild stuff! For wild Lisbon nights!

Jangal – Stolen Places

It arrived through Snowhite PR, the new psychedelic single Stolen Places by Jangal. Berlin-based New Zealander Brodie White is responsible for your lust to start wandering through a collapsing shopping mall at 2AM with sparks falling from the ceiling and someone preaching doom through a broken karaoke machine. Brodie twists post-punk tension, urban decay and strange neon melancholy into a hypnotic crawl through the cracked soul of transactional modern existence. Wait what?

Dead Hits – Real Love

Echodelick Records rules! But you already knew that! Originally released in 2025, the Real Love is a five track by Dead Hits. A Brooklyn-based stoner rock band delivering volume, grit, and groove straight from the underground, featuring former members of NAAM and La Otracina. Well, Dead Hits seem to stumble out of the New York psychic smog clutching fuzz-drenched riffs, wah-pedal hallucinations and garage-rock napalm. Real Love howls like a subway exorcism at sunrise! Acid-soaked psych, gutter-punk swagger and amplifier worship colliding in a glorious, feedback-screaming riot somewhere between cosmic revelation and total nervous collapse. Glorious!

Dead Otter – The Sentinel

Dead Otter – The Sentinel
Riot Season / Echodelick – 2025
Rock, Stoner, Space, Psych, Instrumental
Rated: ****

Realizing we slept on their No Sleep Till Kozfest release and weirded out too much over Bridge of Weird and thus actually only ever mentioned their first step on the road to glory called Pathfinder. Indeed, we only mentioned Dead Otter’s first release from 2016 on the HiVe. And as usual, we should be dragged through the streets, full of tar and feathers. Luckily, there’s a new album out called The Sentinel and we can make up for the lack of attention given to this wild and wonderful outfit…

An outfit that left us wanting for more studio material for some seven years. But now that Dead Otter has crashed back into our dimension, we can dispel all those rumors about them being disbanded, abducted or living off-grid, off-planet in some astral trailer park. But now they’re here, materialized, shooting star fire lasers out of guitars and stomping out energy through a warp drive rhythm section!

The Otternaut! Our cosmic, probably intoxicated explorer, has crashed onto a desert world, beneath the looming gaze of… The Sentinel! A colossal planetoid entity that could erase civilizations with a mere blink of its eyes. And that story is told with wormholes full of fuzz, swirling smoke, and planet shifting distortion. Just listen as Space Shadows opens the transmission as it was captured by a derelict space station. Eleven minutes of shimmering cosmic mirage, slowly drifting, meditative and with a definite touch of sixties psychedelics. Your consciousness will slip its moorings, time will warp and as a numbers station crackles into existence like some weird prank call, you cannot help but ask yourself: did Dead Otter find a way to hack reality with music?

They continue kicking the door into deep space. Dual guitars duel like cosmic gladiators high on some weird kind of de fermented moon cactus, while that rhythm section gallops loudly across dunes of irradiated sand. There are a lot of floating moments and sections where you could imagine yourself stuck, submerged in vat of liquid waiting for freezing or cloning. That’s when the shoegazing, atmospheric haze drifts in. And that’s when you just bubble along and hold on to hear what kind of release might be coming. Like the organ solo in Ibises for instance, which sounds like a cathedral exploding on a distant moon, ending with shattered petals of stained glass flying off into vacuum.

The eventual climax, the final confrontation, happens on the final and title track The Sentinel. A desert-psych showdown with the planet god! It’s like they’ve hit the cosmic nerve, with twin guitars blazing through a sandstorm, and rumbles deep beneath the riffs like tectonic anxiety. Sonic howling and wailing, as The Sentinel stands before them. This is it, the time to push their space rock powers to the absolute brink… And to shove them and the gigantic Sentinel, over the edge… Dead Otter knows where it is, they’ve been there and might actually be one of the very few to have come back… With stories to tell..

The Elven – Solstice

The Elven – Solstice
Spinda Records / Clostridium Records / Echodelick Records – 2025
Rock, Hardrock, Classic, Psych, Roots, Seventies
Rated: *****

Radiating warmth and blissful harmony, the brand new outfit The Elven have released the perfect spring and summer time album with Solstice. Heralding the coming of a new season, a new sound, steeped in love, freedom and the music of yesteryear. With grace and poise they dip their toes in as much of the classic stuff as they can handle, never shying away from using seventies, roots, blues and psych to touch up their hardrock. Ever since the first single Shine was released The Elven has been on heavy rotation over here. And whenever the sun blessed me with its rays, The Elven would be spun first, as we gazed skywards and thanked the energy bestowed upon me. And if you haven’t yet gotten acquainted with this new project through the first single Shine or their second single Closer To Freedom, let us jot down once more who The Elven are. Born during those weird pandemic times, the project is comprised out of bassist Rod Tirado and guitarist/vocalist James Vieco of Saturna fame. Who managed to rope in their friend Isaiah Mitchell from Earthless to lay down his guitar prowess. And with added keyboardist Tabatha Puig from The Capaces and drummer Javi Gómez from Patente De Corso, they managed to get together and write for one whole month. The result of which are the eight songs on the Solstice album...

Which starts out  with that brilliant Shine track. Not just a single, but a prayer and so soulful, that it will immediately warm every fiber of your being. And those vocals, James Vieco sounds completely in synch with this track, the composition and its meaning, delivering it so pure, honest and with touch of gruff that runs straight from his heart to yours. Far Beyond is that classic seventies stroll, that riverside walk that stops at the pier and has you gaze off into the distance, determined to beat on, boats against the current. Followed by Closer To Freedom, slowing you even more down, to a stop, to an inhale that will fill you with nothing but energy as you let go of all those desperate thoughts, the memories of those ten thousands mistakes, and embrace forgiveness. Translated so beautiful by the vocals and the guitar lines that brush ever so lovely beneath the voice. With New Pair Of Wings, we come to the most current, even pop sensible, track of the album. Light as a feather, its meandering build will surely lift you up and send you off as high as you can possibly be, the flight punctuated by a lovely guitar solo, which stops as the track gets a minutely wilder sequence, until break down. Stand Right Next To Me, with a jazzy touch, courtesy of a saxophone brought to you by Juan Lichter and a guitar that riffs off the sax and the percussion that keeps this comfortable and confident bop and swing going. The longest track on the album, sits so snugly in the middle of the album, it will make you long to dance tightly together with all those stranger you might meet at a roof top party somewhere on a warm and sweltering night. Out The Door, with lovely key work, gives of most of the Black Crowes boogie and the Southern touch they usually bring to the table. But this table is set for you to dance upon, arms constantly in the air and shuffling those like crazy. Slower, gruff crooner, Wherever I Go follows, is that soulful early seventies rock once again, although the guitar tone of the solo also has a bit of middle nineties, but as the keys meander throughout the composition, and the guitar shambles across, the overall atmosphere is that of vintage love once again. Final track All Of A Sudden feels like that peaceful glade in the middle of the forest, filled with flowers and a sun that will always break through the clouds at the perfect moment. It is the instrumental outro, which lets both guitar and piano become that sunray once again, filling you with warmth and understanding. Preparing you for a new time, a new season and a chance to do whatever you need to do. Like a first day of spring can do…

The Elven – Closer To Freedom

The Elven – Closer To Freedom

It does give off that atmosphere, a spring sun and a form of freedom many of us long for. It’s the new, second single, by that brand new outfit The Elven. The project made up out of members from Saturna and Earthless and who will be releasing their debut album through Spinda Records (ES), in a new collaboration with Clostridium Records (DE) and Echodelick Records (US) on April 3rd. A beautiful song called Closer To Freedom will stop you in your tracks, will make you face the sun and breathe…

PR Wire:

The Elven drop "Closer to freedom" as their second single...

It's been already a month since The Elven presented themselves to the world with their first-ever single "Shine". But now it's time for "Closer to freedom", the second and last track that they will reveal before April 3, 2025, the date when their debut album 'Solstice' will be released through Spinda Records.

What began at the end of 2020 as an irrational need to compose music by Rod Tirado and James Vieco from Saturna soon took on a different identity when they brought in their friends Isaiah Mitchell (Earthless) on lead guitar, Tabatha Puig on keyboards, and Javi Gómez on drums. In just one month, they wrote the 8 songs that make up this debut album, titled 'Solstice', which they recorded with all the freshness and spontaneity of the moment at the Analog Drive-in Studios, alongside Christian A. Korn at the controls and Dani Pernas as co-producer. Pernas would later handle the mixing before passing the project on to Estanis Elorza for mastering.

Solstice

1. Shine
2. Far beyond
3. Closer to freedom
4. New pair of wings
5. Stand right next to me
6. Out the door
7. Wherever I go
8. All of a sudden

For the graphic design, they once again enlisted an illustration by Jondix (Tool, Black Sabbath, High on Fire, Electric Wizard) and the design by Jalón de Aquiles for a vinyl edition that will be released by Spinda Records (ES), in a new collaboration with Clostridium Records (DE) and Echodelick Records (US), who previously worked together on the debut album by Loma Baja.

'Solstice' will be available on April 3, 2025, and will be released exclusively in digital format and on vinyl; in a limited edition of 300 copies in marbled yellow, which can already be pre-ordered at spindarecords.com.

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Weekend

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Weekend

Oh yes, we did say Quick Fire Weekend yesterday right?! Cause we decided to do a full sweep for once! Three days straight of quick words and all sorts of heaviness! So, here’s another Quick Fire round for all of you to enjoy. It’s a massive one once again! With demo’s, singles, EP’s and full albums! All of them begging to be heard. And we know, we know, the albums and bands deserve more than the few words we will jot down here. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Sunday post for the first ever Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Weekend! And how does it burn? YES! It burns hot like molten lava!

Teen Mortgage – Smoked

We love pizza! And we love King Pizza Records! I guess we made that abundantly clear in the past, but just to make sure, we will say it again: we love King Pizza Records! And probably all the records, cassettes and cd’s they ever released. Released at the end of October is the album Smoked by post-punk duo Teen Mortgage! Post-punk adorned with some stoner influence, garage, noise and even a tiny hint of surf here and there. It’s so good, you will want to sell your house and buy every Teen Mortgage record available!

Swarm of Spheres – Brother, Take Five

Out on No Why Records, the new Swarm of Spheres album Brother, Take Five. It was released in October and brings forth the sludge, the stoner in metal form straight out of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Furious and filthy, the six tracks will blast you out of your seat and up against the ceiling. Punky and grinding, the six tracks will thunder your heart and lightning your soul! Three good ol’ boys, delivering six strong songs and the rest, as they say; is history… History, just like the time we mentioned their self-titled and follow-up Invest In Your Death...

Duster 69 – 2021

Duster 69 is a Germany quartet that has returned to fight the good stoner fight after a fourteen year break. The four deliver a two-track EP called 2021 to stick their toes in the water and wet our appetite. It’s seminal stoner rock, which pays homage to the punk and grunge roots. Out on Daredevil Records, the two track is a welcome back and welcoming into our hearts! Let’s hope they feel the love and continue on to produce a full album…

Ananda Mida – Karnak

I believe we never actually mentioned the amazing three track Karnak EP by the Italian psych rockers Ananda Mida. Out on Go Down Records the EP holds indeed three tracks; and one of them features Mario Lalli and another Conny Ochs. “This EP wants to testify to the free and seasoned attitude of improvisations that has always distinguished their live activity and to the idea of a collective that the band has always wanted to embody, giving space to free collaborations or changes in formation in live performances.” And let tell ya, all three tracks, give you in total twenty minutes of desert, stoner, psych and hardrock bliss. With spacey moments and well as bluesy stuff… It’s amazing and it has already been out for half a year or so!

Mienakunaru – Lost Bones of the Holy Butterfly

"A ripping heavy psychedelic rocker that freaks-out with impeccable style. The fuzz heavy guitars solo and feedback blasting out heavy psych vibes all the way. The driving percussion and motorik bass lines build the launch pad for the guitars. for fans of Acid Mothers Temple, Hibushibire, and Electric Moon.” Mienakunaru is a power trio of psychedelic noise rock and space punk and that’s alright by me any day and any time of the week. The vinyl release was scheduled in August on Echodelick Records and was mastered by John McBain. Do we need to say anymore? Perhaps, that you should order the Lammping record at the same time when you visit the site..

Mad Act – Stand By/On

A metal trio from Amiens, France that is called Mad Act and released their debut two track called Stand By/On and is progressive in nature, influence by post-metal, stoner and sludge. Some hardcore influences and even some punkish attitude. The two tracks give you twenty-four minutes of riveting metal and you will love France for them, the 666MRDoom channel on Youtube for paying attention to them and have a terrible lust for that good mustard that France has. Man, that’s good metal mustard!

Korsunnuz – Negative Earth

And why hasn’t everyone contacted each other about the Negative Earth six track by Sheffield foursome Korsunnuz! Or why has it taken me so freaking long to mention this absolute gem of a release! Six tracks that give you all that goodness from the desert. This is the stonerrock you fell in love with; with the exact amount of grunge, punk, hardrock and metal. Generator music, heavy motoring music, the kind that will make your machine run all through the night even though the gasoline meter shows its running on empty!

Eastern High – Halo

METAL! Straight from Sweden comes five piece Eastern High, that give us eight track Halo which holds everything metal! Progressive, metalcore and even some thrash, but all done with grandiose gestures, grand vision and a quality feel for wild melodies and urgent stampedes. And with those at time sacramental vocals; you will soon see Halo’s everywhere…

From the moonbeams of night comes tales of addiction, loss, love, redemption and revenge. An ode to the hopes and horrors of dreams.” And with it come ten tracks that meander through the heavy landscape like a hobo on mushrooms. Clyde Von Klaus brings us Moonbeams, filled with psychedelic garage, punky stoner and doomy grunge. Indeed, and all served up raw, gritty and grating. Heavy on the fuzz and deliciously filthy! Lammping – Flashjacks

Lammping – Flashjacks
Echodelick Records – 2021
Rock, Psych, Stoner, Alternative
Rated: ****

One of the most divergent records to make the September Doom Charts might just be the new Lammping album Flashjacks. Soulful, groovy psychedelic rock straight out of Toronto!  The new Lammping album Flashjacks packs a stoner punch and alternative drum work, breaks and samples… And that puts Lammping in a totally different corner. And nobody puts Lammping in a corner… Sorry about that, but it just had to be said. And well, there also immediately, for some weird and possibly insane reason, came to mind that quote from the High Fidelity movie: “I will now sell five copies of “The Three EPs” by The Beta Band.” Indeed, that kind of feel… It’s different and aimed to wow the heavy music freaks that are always on the lookout for something obscure. But there’s the rub, the Flashjacks album does not deserve to remain obscure. It has all the alternative pop instincts one can want for, a bit of an oddball predilection and a wild sense of space. I love it, but I love The Beta Band as well…
