NEWS - Lorquin’s Admiral Signs with Argonauta Records

Lorquin’s Admiral

God knows… This is just a love song… A new band with a debut album on the horizon! It's coming! We’ve been privy to have heard about this creative outlet a little while ago and when one of the members gave us the news, we felt butterflies in our stomach. For Lorquin’s Admiral is none other than Dawn and Dandy Brown, Marlon King, Nick Hannon, Steve Earle, Dave Angstrom and Mark Engel. Some of which already played together on the amazing Orquesta Del Desierto records. Or Yawning Sons. Or Hermano. And if you don’t know them from there you will surely know them from The Afghan Whigs, Luna Sol, Sons Of Alpha Centauri or the Fizz Fuzz. Unbelievably exciting news! Counting down the moments… Off to mend my garden now… And then the butterflies will come...

PR Wire:

Lorquin’s Admiral Signs with Argonauta Records for Highly Anticipated Debut Album

Argonauta Records proudly announces the signing of Lorquin’s Admiral, a groundbreaking heavy-psychedelic collaboration that promises to captivate audiences across the globe. Featuring a stellar lineup of current and former members of Afghan Whigs, the Fizz Fuzz, Hermano, Luna Sol, Orquesta del Desierto, Sons of Alpha Centauri, and Yawning Sons, the band delivers a unique blend of soul-stirring harmonies, mesmerizing riffs, and unforgettable hooks.

Building on the critically acclaimed writing partnership between Marlon King, Nick Hannon, and Dandy Brown (first established on the widely celebrated Yawning Sons album Sky Island), Lorquin's Admiral encapsulates the essence of psychedelic rock while pushing the genre into exciting new territories. The band’s debut album highlights the stunning vocal interplay of husband-and-wife duo Dawn and Dandy Brown, and the commanding rhythms of celebrated drummer Steve Earle, creating an immersive sonic experience that is both heavy and hypnotic.

Adding to the album’s allure, guitar virtuosos David Angstrom (Hermano, Luna Sol) and Country Mark Engel lend their distinctive touch, enriching the record with lush, textured guitar landscapes. Angstrom’s contributions span seven tracks, while Engel’s masterful work graces two.
Drawing inspiration from desert rock pioneers while seamlessly incorporating elements of blues, psychedelic, and alternative music, Lorquin’s Admiral appeals to fans of Kyuss, Fu Manchu and Fatso Jetson, as well as admirers of the Cranberries, Screaming Trees and Garbage. The band carves out a unique space in the heavy-psychedelic scene, proving that rock music remains a powerful and evolving force.

Lorquin’s Admiral Signing Statement:

“We are incredibly excited and honored to be a part of the Argonauta stable of bands. When we were looking for a place to call home for the Lorquin's Admiral album, our goals were simple: to find a team that had a track record of not only getting behind and developing their artists but also a label that believes strongly in expanding and promoting bands that push the envelope and explore multiple paths of expression. Gero and Argonauta have been doing just that for the past thirteen years, and it is thrilling to have our debut album released by a team that stays loyal to their roots while looking to the future with ears and eyes tuned to the unique and spirited. We can’t thank Argonauta enough for believing in what we’ve created, and we look forward to everyone having a chance to hear it.”

Stay tuned for the release date of Lorquin's Admiral’s debut album and follow Argonauta Records for updates, singles and exclusive previews.

Although, the new edition of the Doom Charts will go live this Friday, which means, most of that free time will be used to get that in proper order. The above list is good though, we listened to nothing but amazing stuff it seems! And we thank Ronny for delivering that one and damn fine write-up for Buzz' Ayaz. Top shelf Anatolian psych rock! Love it! Go check out all them albums and if you use Spotify. There’s a handy list featuring all of those above if they are available there. Cause yes, the new and stunning Sergeant Thunderhoof won't come out till November and the new 1000 Mods will be released that month as well. Seeya all soon we hope! Have a great week!

Luna Sol – Vita Mors

Look at that young Supafuzz buck!

Luna Sol – Vita Mors
Ripple Music – 2024
Rock, Hard, Blues, Stoner, Punk
Rated: *****

Anything Angstrom is always amazing! He’s the A-lister, the string twister and the grooviest dude around. And perhaps not even that well known! But for those of you following the HiVe, you will know we’ve been addicted to Dave Angstrom from the first moment we came in touch with his music.  Which was way back before the little old Stoner HiVe blog came into existence and he was rocking out with Supafuzz. Since that time he’s been involved with many great projects and bands. And before Supafuzz there was more as well. And all of it is worth checking out. Even though you probably already know Hermano of course and I hope you know Asylum On The Hill. But we’re here to talk about his latest band Luna Sol that released it’s debut Blood Moon in 2015 and following Below The Deep in 2019. Both great hard rock and stoner rock records that bring forth all that Angstrom goodness. And that project has now given us their third album Vita Mors. Which in fact seems to harken back more to one of his first bands called Black Cat Bone than ever before. And it is out today!

And mentioned just now, it harkens back more to their early days and the blues roots that inspired it all than we can possible express. The Luna Sol three branded their style as High Mountain Stoner Rock and there’s definitely stonerrock in there, and hardrock and classic rock and punk. But the overarching theme is always the blues. Kicking it off with Black Cat Callin’, it’s got that early ZZ Top, swinging blues groove, that kick and punch stuff. Guitar wailing, bass thumping and the signature Angstrom soaring vocals. It’s the best introduction this album could wish for, cause it condenses all that will come in one fell swoop! Introduction is a fun skit introducing the band to an empty bar, vocalized by Dave’s niece. Continuing on with Evil (Is On The Rise), majestic bass work, sublime drums and a guitar that has the track walking across a mountain range and into your heart immediately. Ever appearing like the reluctant vocalist, his voice on Bottom once again take center stage and shines, excelling in producing those catch phrases and certain words that make his voice’s character shine through. You will hear them throughout the Dave Angstrom discography, and whenever he uses words like Mojo, Doctor, Mountain, he’s got you cornered and you cannot help but submit. Leaf Hound’s Freelance Fiend is up next, and the ‘Brother John’ bassline is getting a life of its own on this rendition. And Angstrom’s vocals seem to get even better, digging up all the grit and spit, before letting his guitar do the talking. Emotionally biting Head In A Hole, with stories of betrayal, beautiful female background vocals and pristine instrumentation, with end dying away in a bit of a feedback wail. Another cover song comes next, Mountain’s Never In My Life, and yet another righteous rendition. After which we head over into more desert punk grooviness, yes, with Low ‘n Easy we enter Brant Bjork territory. That bass, those drums, the laidback, natural and flowing, groove. It centers the album, turns all that blues you heard before into even more of a necessary pulse. Blues, it’s always there, but used as an ode to good times, to fun, to musicianship and exploring those roots of yore. The fifteen songs exhuming soul at all times, I’ll Be Your One takes soulful, warm and radiancy up a notch. The guitar solo touching the heavens as the layered vocals come in again. Stunning. Noising and reverberating in, with an open can of whatever the guys were guzzling, is another standout track called Surrounded By Thieves. Playing example once again to what his voice does best and that guitar layering: Wowzah! And yes, those choppy drums, that crash and cymbal work, intense! They had fun these guys! It's obvious on many tracks. You could hear it there and you can hear it again when No Substitutions starts. Which is a builder, a stutter touched hard rocker, that feels like you were present at the recording. And together with Watch Our Skeletons Die and You Better Get Runnin’ they offer three steady closers, with fun and laughter. Before we get to the Outro (Thank You), vocalized by two of Dave’s grandchildren. The old secret song is dusted off by Time Moves On (With Space), for you have to enjoy seventeen minutes of silence before you get to the semi-acoustic, emotionally charged, contemplative and rustic, fireplace rocker. Wonderfully punctuated by a chorus of many voices and luscious keys work. And that concludes Vita Mors, another stunning addition to the Dave Angstrom discography. Luna Sol’s new incarnation featuring Zeth Pedulla on drums and Doug Tackett on bass brings you all the good and honest fun of blues roots explored. And as usual, there are many guest stars and family members adding their breath, sweat and love to, Vita Mors this wonderful heartfelt album…

Luna Sol - Evil (Is On The Rise)

Luna Sol - Evil (Is On The Rise)

The few crazy ones that have been following Stoner HiVe a bit, know how much we adore everything maestro Dave Angstrom does. We can't help it, it's almost like a bro-crush or something! So, when we finally heard there was new music on the horizon we jumped out of our pants with excitement! That's right! A new Luna Sol album is around the corner! Vita Mors is the title of the new album and will come at you, teeth barred, September 20th on Ripple Music. Can hardly wait! Luckily, we have second single Evil (Is On The Rise) to quench our thirst.

PR Wire:

High mountain stoner rock trio Luna Sol (fronted by Hermano guitarist David Angstrom) present the second track taken from their upcoming new album "Vita Mors", to be issued on September 20th via Ripple Music.

New single "Evil (Is On The Rise)" delves into themes of unease, darkness and despair, as well as a longing for liberation and renewal from the negativity that can overwhelm us. Drawing inspiration from the blues, frontman and guitarist David Angstrom skillfully tells this folklore with a sense of slyness, accompanied by a heavy beat that captivates listeners. The music video showcases the band's admiration and appreciation for Mexican culture and its celebration of life.

Luna Sol is a highly regarded high mountain stoner blues rock band led by veteran singer and lead guitarist David Angstrom, known for his work in bands such as Hermano, Asylum On The Hill, Black Cat Bone and Supafuzz. Now in its 14th year, the band is poised to deliver its finest album yet through Californian imprint Ripple Music.

To bring this vision to life, Angstrom enlisted the help of drummer Zeth Pedulla and bassist Doug Tackett. The trio's chemistry was immediate and undeniable. As the riffs began to flow, songs came to life and they decided to hit record to capture the beautiful heaviness they were creating together. From the onset, they all wanted "
Vita Mors" to feel and sound live, pulling the listener into a small dive bar nestled in the mountains and filled with Marshall stacks, Les Pauls, a massive amount of drums and a wall of bass amps to shake the foundation.

"
Vita Mors" highlights Angstrom's desire to evolve and explore new musical territory while staying true to his Southern Kentucky roots. Doug and Zeth create beautiful layers of fury in one breath while offering a divine delicacy in the next, a perfect foundation for Angstrom’s madness, stories, riffs and noise.

The Fizz Fuzz – Palmyra

The Fizz Fuzz – Palmyra
Taxi Driver Records/Slush Fund Records – 2020
Rock, Desert, Stoner, Atmospheric
Rated: ****

Featuring hero Dave Angstrom (Hermano/Luna Sol), Steve Earle (Afghan Whigs), Mike Callahan (Hermano/Earshot), Alice Albertazzi and Gianfranco Romanelli (Alice Tambourine Lover) and Mark Engel (Orquesta del Desierto) will ofcourse immediately turn me on and I trust you as well! But The Fizz Fuzz is actually the new musical vehicle of maestro Dandy Brown and his wife Dawn, and that fact is even more important. Cause as driving force behind the amazing Orquesta Del Desierto and Alice Tambourine Lover, the man has always held a sweet spot deep inside my heart. Solo record Scattered Days was already a damn fine release but The Fizz Fuzz’s debut album Palmyra shines even more. Recorded in many different studios around the globe the album retains this high desert feeling. An atmosphere that encapsulates that moment of blossoming cacti after an early morning rain shower perfectly as well as those dusty windswept sand roads longing for a drop or two. Two pieces that go perfectly together, just like the voices of the couple, sparkling and clean. It’s the Fizz that was added to the Fuzz. Sizzling shiny rock combined with airy compositions and every possible drop of ambience. One hell of an album once again and one that will play out many summer evenings when you are staying at home… It could not have arrived at a better time!

The Doom Chart for July 2019

Doom Chart

“I like my music to awaken the ghosts inside of me. Not the demons, you understand, but the ghosts” ~ David Bowie
A short and sweet intro to the new edition of the Doom Chart. I believe four of my choices actually made the final 30... Luna Sol and Sleeping Giant being two of them...  My top pick however was the new Monomyth record Orbis Quandrantis. An amazing space rock adventure once again. This time even more meticulous, careful and slow in building and surfing along the magnetic currents of the tension arcs and hypnotic energy... Simply stunning! The total list of sent in albums by the contributors just falls short of 300 different albums this month. Amazing... Sheer quality and awesomeness every one of them!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and album reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge metal, stoner-psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 5 artists listened to last week…

A Quick list before we head out into the cold and gray weather. Where did the summer go all of a sudden? Still getting the most spins is the awesome new Below The Deep record by Luna Sol! But there’s another Luna on the horizon! Luna And The Moonhouds, great band with a great record called Moonbase! Slow Burn Suicide by Eternal Black continues its round, it did not end up on the 8th position of the June Doom Charts for nothing! And the same could be stated for Beastwars! There IV album sits nice and cozy on the number 2 spot of the Doom Charts. And record we hope will start making the rounds is Spirit of The Lonely Places by Ealdor Bealu. Cause there is so much beauty hiding among the atmospheric heavy psych and downtuned smooth and sweetness. Be sure to check it out! Check’m all out!

Number 4

Number 4

“I’ve been eating cake since the day I was born. Been eating cake, drinking whisky and seducing the ladies!” ~ Lemmy

The final one point jump takes up to Number 4. After this amazing album come the big leaps. Have you recovered from taking in the Hawkdope record? Cause Black Rainbows ended up on Number 5. I haven’t, it truly is a masterpiece. A big thank you to all you lovely freaks out there that voted for it, it has brought it back to my attention. The band that follows is one that released their debut this year and is championed by a true legend. A legend that formed bands like Hermano, Supafuzz and Asylum On The Hill and a real hero for yours truly. There’s something dark and brooding about this record. Which might be due, once again, thanks to the weird mountain folklore and scary stories his backyard is steeped in. You can almost smell the blood dripping of the hooks, riffs and growling guitars. Dirty power chords and bourbon soaked drums. It’s steamy and with every track that passes you feel the shadows come alive around you… Number 4!

Doom Chart for July 2015

Doom Chart

“You are about to experience one of the strangest meetings ever convened — a joining of […] the most unusual people on Earth! Sit quietly in the shadows of this clandestine conference and observe it well! For from it shall soon be born … The DOOM PATROL” – Arnold Drake

We dive in that dirty pool of the Doom Charts to cool our bodies and warm our heart as the summer heat whirls around us. And we can’t stress the fact enough that they are compiled our of some forty amazing bloggers, journalists and music fiends from around the world who send their top albums of past month to one of them to compile the ultimate Doom Chart. It’s a highly democratic adventure that unfortunately will leave some of those great albums and bands hanging just below the Top 25 that is published… And guess what… Mr. Bucky Brown, the guy who compiled this month’s issue, that hot July issue, released the 25 below to us as well! But who will be the Numero Uno this month? Still Dopethrone? Or do we find another album on that unholy throne?  And what great new bands entered the list and who do you miss? Go check it out! Go check it out…

Go check it out and head on over to the Doom Charts to read up on all those amazing albums!

Spoiler alert for...

The first album to drop off the list and make it back on again, the new album by that new band formed by grand master Angstrom. Yes, Dave has done it again. You can almost smell the blood dripping from the hooks, riffs and growling guitars. Dirty power chords and bourbon soaked drums. It’s steamy and with every track that passes you feel the shadows come alive around you… Be sure  to check out Luna Sol’s album Blood Moon, cause it will make you shiver, give you goosebumps and afraid to turn off the lights…

Luna Sol – Blood Moon

Luna Sol – Blood Moon
Slush Fund Recordings – 2015
Rock, Stoner
Rated: *****

"Someone dropped a bag of devils off at my doorstep, and they took the shape of a Luna Sol album. I am thrilled that I was able to contribute to this mayhem." That’s Dandy Brown for ya. Known for his work with Hermano, Orquesta Del Desierto and that damn fine solo album he released last year. And before they track the new Hermano album this summer in Colorado the man delivers some crunchy bass work and vocals for Death Mountain the second track on Luna Sol’s first full-sized album Blood Moon. Which also features John Garcia on the song December, Nick Oliveri on Pretty Rotten and Dizzy Reed from Guns N’ Roses on Your War. Besides ofcourse his other longtime Kentucky compadres Jason Groves and Greg Martin. Whose compadres you ask? Well, we’re ofcourse talking about hero Dave Angstrom! Who went up to the Asylum On The Hill and came down a high mountain on a dark and twisted ride gunning the motor until the final second and the very last note. Joined by Denverlites Shanda Kolberg (The Swanks), Shannon Fahnestock (The Swindlers) and Pat Gill (The Feds, ’76 Pinto), they never ease up on the curves and they never swerve but take wide turns whenever they feel like it. All the different vocals fit perfectly together and make the heavy harmonies taste like lead and gasoline. There’s something dark and brooding about this record. Which might be due, once again, thanks to the weird mountain folklore and scary stories his backyard is steeped in. You can almost smell the blood dripping of the hooks, riffs and growling guitars. Dirty power chords and bourbon soaked drums. It’s steamy and with every track that passes you feel the shadows come alive around you… And that’s before the final track In The Shadows starts, which will make you shiver, give you goosebumps and afraid to turn off the lights…

Luna Sol – Demo

Luna Sol – Demo
Self released – 2013
Rock, Stoner, Desert, Southern, Psychedelic
Rated: ****

As some of you might know there’s a little place of worship deep inside my heart for everything the legendary Dave Angstrom comes up with. Not just because of Hermano, Supafuzz or Asylum On The Hill. But also because of his other projects, producer qualities and guest spots. They always add that chutzpa energy the man has hiddin in his guitar and his voice. And now he’s on the verge of returning to the forefront with yet another band called Luna Sol. It combines the sound we know from Supafuzz and Hermano and feels a lot like a continuation of Asylum On The Hill. The band is comprisde out of guitarist Pat Devlin, drummer Pat Gill (Dave Boylan Band, Love Rustlers, 76 PINTO, The FEDS) Taylor Iversen (Black Sleep of Kali / Black Acid Devil) and Shanda Kolberg (The Swanks / Period). The demo holds four tracks that are a definite promise of something hot and heavy! Let the moon sun rise fast!
