Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

The new Edition of The Doom Charts is going up in a minute, looking back at all that good and heavy stuff that came out in July. Which means this Quick Fire Friday might not be read by that much of you crazies out there? Right?! Cause ya’ll have 40 albums over on the Doom Charts to go through! Well, we're gonna do this anyway, cause we feel the fire burning! So, here’s another 10 albums, singles and EP’s to get your head around! A few a bit older and some a bit newer. But all straight out of the Heavy Underground! And we know… There is so much out there, so much good and heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. But here it is… Another Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

[B O L T] – ( 0 5 )

This one was released all the way back in April of this year, through Dunk Records. They’re called [B O L T] and with their newest release ( 0 5 ) they give us yet again some blackened instrumental drone to submerge ourselves in. Seventy-seven minutes of doom, drone, sludge, and ambient metal! And if those brackets aren’t enough, they move outside of them whenever they feel like it. Two basses, one drummer, delivering sometimes dark but often beautiful amniotic drone…

Le Scimmie – Adriatic Desert

Early on we mentioned their Habanero release and Dromomania on the HiVe, but back in April they released their eight track aptly named Adriatic Desert album, and we are very saddened to say we did not mention if before now. We are talking about the Italian duo Le Scimmie! And the way the album bursts out of the gate with that Wild Boar track will immediately turn up the dry heat and whirlwind sand around your head! Out on Frekete! Records, it’s got style, class, and attitude; this is the kind of record you can keep spinning over and over…

Bottled Fish – Dreams Lie

We’re travelling through April so it seems, cause Bottled Fish released their Dreams Lie album back then as well. The duo, trio, or sometimes four-piece from Prague, Czechia, sketch indie, slow core, psychedelic, and alternative drawings of human existence. Often moving towards the bronze, faded colors of an old picture, the bossa nova, jazzy kind, you wait for the crystal chandelier to come crashing down. It never does, the world keeps spinning and the music behind Dreams Lie keeps you in a worthwhile drowse…

 Karma Vulture – Something Better

Can you guess when Karma Vulture’s Something Better album was released? Indeed, back in April! Featuring The Absurd vocalist Ben Foerg on Drums the ten tracks give you some spicey hardrock, that goes the way of the Californian desert and stoner as much as it does a more classic seventies take on rock. A bit of eighties, a bit of surf, a bit of space, and a whole lot of attitude! Out on Bent Knee Records, obviously, it naturally ended up on the April Doom Charts! Lucky Number 13!

Alconaut – Endless Skies

Back in May, Corsican trio Alconaut released Endless Skies to much acclaim and stormed to the Top 3 of the May Doom Charts. I love Corsica, had many wonderful adventures there, but apart from arriving by boat in Bastia, I never really spent time in that little city. Listening to Alconaut I immediately think I should! Their progressive and psychedelic rock also meanders through the metal landscape and brings its very own spirit. A bit like the island does as well…

Max Boogie Overdrive - The Devil Knows My Name

The lovely lady behind Mettle Media PR very carefully picks whatever she thinks is awesome and she wants to promote and in doing so, has set a precedent, the bar high and a trustworthy mark up on the wall! So, when the promo came in for the new single The Devil Knows My Name by Los Angeles trio Max Boogie Overdrive we knew we would be blown away properly! Bad ass motoring stonerrock and speed boogie metal! It’s the second single for the Stoned Again album to be released in October and Suffer Sister was the first track leading the charge… Can’t wait for the rest of the album!

Gramma Vedetta - Space Farmer

London trio Gramma Vedetta has been releasing grade A heavy stuff for quite some years now, remember that wild The Hum Of The Machine from last year for instance. Well, the three amigos are back with a new single called Space Farmer! And what a ride! Stonerrock of the top shelf; with some indeed, cosmic influences that turn their desert sound into one sandy wasteland from the red planet. Super sharp, super charged, stoner that will turn the earworm into a wormhole!

David Eugene Edwards – Lionisis

Had the pleasure of interviewing the man once, seen him many times live, with 16 Horsepower, Wovenhand, together with Hungarian folk group Muzsikás and Zapp String Quartet and of course that very intense first time he played at Roadburn back in 2011. We mean David Eugene Edwards, and he has just announced his first ever solo album Hyacinth under his own name and shared the first single and video Lionisis. Out in September through Sargent House, this one single alone holds promise of everything we love about David Eugene Edwards

Le Scimmie – Habanero

Le Scimmie – Habanero
Self released – 2012
Rock, Stoner, Doom, Noise, Garage
Rated: One song

After the impressive debut album Dromomania of the Italian duo Le Scimmie the boys seem to continue full speed in addressing new material. Releasing a track called Habanero that is just as raw and gritty as their complete album but with a definite progression in structure. If this is a promise for what a possible new album from these guys might sound like I for one can hardly wait to hear it. Go check out Habanero and judge for yerself!

Le Scimmie – Dromomania

Le Scimmie – Dromomania
Self released – 2011
Stoner, Doom, Noise, Garage
Rated: ***

Dromomania is the debut album of the Italian duo Le Scimmie. Recorded in only four days this instrumental piece of work is heavy laden with inspiration and ideas. The project started in the year 2007 and had a clear aim; to get as raw as possible with a minimal amount of instrumentation. Their ramshackle progressive garage sound is translated into smashing riffs that change speed and hue in an instant, evolving the melody from grim to driving and the atmosphere from accepting to frustrating. And then they take their thrash punk structure and turn all of it into a rainbow of stoner, doom and noise. Viewed separately the ten tracks amount to little more then fading fragments of a nightmare. But when listened to as whole it seems to be telling a tall tale of adventures through a sick and twisted landscape. Bella zio!
