Number 18

Number 18

It’s a forty point jump to reach Number 18. Released in February through their own Evening Star Records this is their fifth full-sized album and one that stands tall as the epitome of heavy underground fusion. Almost logically it ended up on the Number 1 spot of the Doom Charts of that month, where we wrote: Space and Progressive rock have always been the sisters that could dervish and whirl in beautiful circles around each other. Combined with more jazzy and fusion tones; elements borrowed from many world music scenes and everything psychedelic, turns their fifth album into grandiose 1001 nights fairytale proportions. Like a quicksilver river the compositions flow through your veins and warm up your blood. Vivid images and sceneries come to life, bloom and blossom as you listen to this album. Visionary might be an understatement here… Indeed, and all of you who voted must have felt something similar, cause the album ended up on Number 18

Number 18

After Anciients on Number 19, we now move over to Number 18. And on this little spot on the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2024 we find two albums with the exact same amount of points. But completely different in musical output. One of them delivers an electrifying and dizzying maelstrom of seventies rock and psychedelic prog. It’s their third album and with it they manage to retrieve that sound of yore in perfect almost sacred form. Rooted in blues, the songs are both complex, yet also so easy to stomp along with. Absolute persistent in delivering those vintage motoring riffs, the organ providing extra fuel and power to reach every destination possible. And you will be there with them, with a heart full of glee. That other album brings the cosmic doom, the machinal sludge, and the boom that makes your house quake. Shit, it makes the entire neighborhood vibrate, for the delivery is seismic and crushing! And even then they manage to turn all that heaviness into something extremely hallucinogenic, trippy, atmospheric and droning. An album fated to bring their brilliance out into the open for the entire world…

According to all of your votes, on Number 18 we find two albums:

Number 18

We found four bands responsible for three albums grouped together on Number 19 with the exact same amount of points this morning. We now move over to Number 18, occupied by a single album. A steady riser as the votes came in. Released on Tee Pee Records in April, the eight tracks on this album have that high energy rock ‘n roll going on. That spirited metal, classic and heavy, but very eighties as well. A dual lead, dueling guitar assault that might spin your head into a whirl as you try to follow the notes they throw your way. It’s almost jazzy, the way they infuse that prog and proto into their version of NWOBHM. And even though you can listen to this very technically, you immediately feel it is not meant like that, it’s meant to fire you up, your loins and your blood! To get your doing that silly dance, that head banging disco and to get the party started right… This ain’t nothing for nothing but…

Those final lists that came in showed without any doubt that there are so many albums that are loved so much and so close together in the amount of love. Cause we found two bands on Number 20, three bands on Number 19 and well… There are FOUR bands with their FOUR albums on Number 18!!! And all of them, without any doubt, deserve to be there or even higher. Naturally… Well, we jump 23 points from Conan, Somali Yacht Club and Samavayo to reach the four on Number 18. Three of which we mentioned on the HiVe and one of them I managed to see live this year. On Krach Am Bach festival in Germany the blew me and my might hangover clear away. They slowly drifted away from the grunge they always seemed to implore to more influences from stoner, hardrock and blues. With an even warmer and steamier sound and those riffs and grooves, oh my lord! Just like that amazing new drummer! Of the two other albums we already mentioned, one was mentioned only a few weeks ago and the other all the way back in May. That new one, is from a new formation that came with a surprise and an avant-garde approach to doom and metal. The five opt for gigantic gestures, a massive amount of layers and the fierce ability to turn it all down to a mere trickle of sounds. And then they let the roar swell, with enough gravitas to bring the world around you to a halt. The other album delivers some true desert punk, stoner and garage and with such feverous energy the desert sand will melt away under your feet and into a shimmering mirror of glass. It is explosive, wild, stunning, and extremely addictive! That fourth album we unfortunately never got around to mentioning, but the Doom Charts did that for us. They came in 1st back in July and our very own Crypt Guard wrote back then: “Many music outfits have taken on aspects of Herbert’s epos and processed them through their music and one would lie if he didn’t admit the spice-laced sands have inspired heavy riffers and reefers around the globe, be it Sandrider, Sleep or Dvne. On their new album the four-piece goes through the themes of the first couple of books with a riff-heavy yet playful demeanor, successfully painting their own vision of Herbert’s mysteriously archaic sci-fi monument with a fitting desert rock aesthetic.” Four bands on Number 18!

Number 18

We climb from Number 19 to 18 today… One spot and still only a minor jump in points. For we jump from Dunbarrow and Thunder Horse on Number 19 only five points to reach Number 18 where we once again find two bands with their respective majestic albums! That’s three times in a row with two albums with the same points! If this continues, we shall have mentioned forty albums by the time we reach the Number 1 spot on January 1st. But let’s focus on the task at hand, let us introduce the first of the two albums… Released in September; a debut album, that immediately lands the Number 1 spot on the Doom Charts of that month. Sweaty, swampy, high octane rock ’n stoner that delivers retro rock just as easy as garage, metal and blues. It’s time to light up that cigar and make the fat lady sing a holy hallelujah, cause this trio is absolute killer! And guess what, the quartet that is also featured on the Number 18 position is as well! And I can’t be more resolute in professing my love for this album. And that is the simple truth! Cause the seven tracks on this album give us hardrock gasoline and metal fuel to keep us burning all through the night. There’s doom here, there’s stoner and there’s blues; all served up with a hint of nineties and an all-encompassing love for the good riff! And riffs we get! Should we mention they also occupied the Number 1 spot of the Doom Charts? Indeed they did, back in July. And now they’re here together with those other crazies… On Number 18!
