The new week has started and the week past was filled with three interviews, a concert (actually on one day) and a festival. So, yeah, little time to HiVe, but a lot of time spent with music! And we still managed to mention a few releases… Like the amazing new Yawning Man album and that devastating Modder release! Who showed their maximalist prowess on Helldorado Festival in Eindhoven, Netherlands. What a wicked show once again! And we had to pay attention to our very own in house poet Ronny Dijksterhuis! He’s doing a poetry challenge this month and is a true sculptor with words. Will there be more time for Stoner HiVe this week, we can only hope! If not, you can always use the way back machine and check out any of the older posts. Who knows, you might have missed something somewhere… Grin!

In a week leading up to the publishing of the new Doom Charts edition, we still managed to get some HiVe stuff done! Good morning and welcome to another glance at the week passed. We started the week passed with some words on Maha Sohona, Sunbreather, Frayle and Lacertilia. Managed to also do a Quick Fire Friday and watched as the new October Doom Charts spread like wildfire! What a month it has been. So many great releases! And as that other post filled with loads of goodies went up on Friday, the Quick Fire Friday segment we marveled once again at the amount of music being released on a daily basis! And after all that we done head first into the new single by LáGoon! Feeling truly honored to be able to reveal You Tried (You Failed) to the world! Have you listened yet? To all of it? If not, get on that! Or at least try… Grin!

The Doom Chart for October 2020

Doom Charts

“When I was younger I knew I could do anything – I could be the president if I wanted to, but that was a stupid idea – I’d rather be a rock star...” ~ Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain for president? Can we write him in? I’m sure somebody somewhere is thinking the same thing. Maybe being a rock star wasn’t a good idea and had he taken a different path we could be voting him into office right now? Fun to imagine, but we know the reality…

October is one of my favorite months mostly due to the nostalgia surrounding the changing of the colors, shorter days, and the crisp, cool mornings. Lately it’s seemed like no month will top the last in the music realm, yet here we are banging our heads in disbelief on the quality of tunes still coming at us. We’re continually climaxing month to month in terms of relentless exposure to music in the heavy underground.

In typical fashion, nearly 300 different albums voted to chart this month and for the first time in the history of the charts, to my knowledge, besides the very first chart, the entire top 25 albums are NEW meaning no repeats from last month. This is just insane, and that’s not even counting the host of bad ass albums just released on October 30th as our voting closed up for the month.

The all new October Doom Charts are here! Yes, ALL NEW! As Bucky already mentioned; every album on this list wasn’t on it a month prior. Almost 300 albums got voted for and the Top 25 are all brand new! Incredible! Sporting all that good and heavy stuff we all love so dearly! Personal votes went out to Fumarole, Pallbearer, Temple of the Fuzz Witch, Occult Hand Order, Ruff Majik, Horizon, Molassess, Big Scenic Nowhere, Fuzz, NARLA, The Re-Stoned & Sautrus ... Yikes! Quite a lot to make the final list! And there is even more of that good stuff out there! Cause just below the 30 posted are albums like Last Ride by Vessel of Light and Run To The Sky by Falcon Haptics waiting to jump on the list… Perhaps next month they will sire higher? Or perhaps another 25 all new albums will appear? Who knows… But it is all good and all heavy! And we love them all!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and album reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge metal, stoner-psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

The Number One album of 2016

The Number One album of 2016

We are approaching the deadline for your lists for the Top 20 Countdown of 2019. That deadline is early December 13… So, if you want to contribute, send them now to our EMAIL! But before we start the Countdown of 2019 we look back at those past 10 years of Stoner HiVe. Indeed, we celebrate 10 years. 10 years of heavy riffs, romps and stomps! 10 years of heavy magic! That all started back in 2009 when the blog started, just so we would have a vehicle to count down the best 20 albums of 2009. The edition of 2016 had 76 lists to tally, a first decline in sent in lists since 2009, but it still made the outcome more valid then when we started back in 2009. That list, deduced out of the lists sent in by 76 heavy music fiends,  started with The Re-Stoned – Reptiles on Number 20. It featured Asteroid and their III album on Number 3 and the amazing Repeated Exposure To… album by 1000Mods on Number 2. For the entire Top 20 of 2016, visit the Countdown So Far post on Stoner HiVe… But what album ended up on the Number One position back in 2016... Well, that’s when we wrote:

“There can be only one. A 1000Mods stood firm on Second Place. But to reach our Gold Medalist, the Numero Uno, the one true legendary album of 2016, we almost have to double the amount of points of the 1000Mods album Repeated Exposure To… Incredible! And something I had not expected. Not because of some form of doubt about this album or this band. Cause they were ofcourse also present on the Countdown before, on Number 9 back in 2014 and Number 14 in 2012. But because there were so many great albums released this year. I reckoned the field would have been much closer together. I, have to say, to some shame perhaps, that I had not recognized the status and amazing beauty of this album. In former years I knew, as everyone probably did, that Elder would win. Or Wo Fat or even Electric Wizard. But while I kept listening to this album over and over and enjoying every freaking riff and moment of it. I had not recognized it’s true quality. I do now. And it will continue to be pure energy for me from this moment on. Righteous fuel. And I need fuel. I am a serious consumer. And I am a firm believer, that on some nights, when the moon is full, and the animals are on the prowl, a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles with the right kind of music very loud on the radio… And yes, this album will make it run even faster and even further…”

And we are very honored that Madman Tony Maim wanted to revisit this album as well and give us his thoughts on how the albums has fared in the past few years… “Saying goodbye to Small Stone Records after 10 years this was to be their first recordings for Napalm Records. This still qualifies as one of the best hard rock albums released in 2016. Everything worked - the crisp production, the lineup changes, the aggressive attack on display, Everything. I still cannot fault this album. Stop reading this and play it at once!”

Number 20

Number 20

It almost happened. A band that released its album in December of 2015 making it to the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2016. No less than 8 freaks voted for Yuri Gagarin’s At The Center Of All Infinity. And it would have been righteous. For December 2015 counts and it is an amazing album. But it was not to be. Cause they were bested by one single point by these Russian reptile loving cats. Already making the Number 16 spot on the list back in 2010 and now once again. The instrumental psychedelics and excellent stoner tracks on this album are filled with amazing guitar work and massive bass-lines. And there’s always this bluesy undercurrent that flows along. Or as Frazer Jones stated when the band made the Doom Chart back in August: “… re-turn with a mix of old and new tunes, re-mixed, re- recorded and utterly re-markable soundscapes that criss-cross across genres like tire marks on an old dirt road. Funky and experimental sit side by side with gnarly and rocking, on a breath-taking journey of musical excellence.” And we could not agree more! So get rocking with these freaky lizards!

The Re-Stoned – Reptiles Return

Number 16

Number 16

We have come to our first entry in the Stoner HiVe Ultimate top 20 list of 2010 that does not hail from the American continent. The first four were either from the United States or Canada. But this one belongs to the tribe of the Vodka drinking freaks! Yes; the next band hails from Russia and delivered their second album this year. The first album being a self released cd-r one in 2009. On their new album they teach us the natural laws via eleven hardrocking instrumental stoner tracks in the vein of Karma To Burn. Raw and heavy riffing; mixed with ramshackle bluesy drums and psychedelic melodies. And hour long near perfect trip that takes you places that Laika never even dreamed off. It’s a perfect example of re-hashing certain ideas without loosing your originality!
