Dekonstruktor – Death Beat

Dekonstruktor – Death Beat
Addicted Label – 2024
Doom, Death, Metal, Noise, Sludge, Industrial
Rated: ***

There’s always a slight feeling of trepidation whenever I start listening to an album labeled as death-doom or experimental black metal or a mix of them all. I often feel less equipped to deal with that sort of aural devastation. My tastebuds are more accustomed to the less harsh albums floating around the heavy underground. And I reckon a few of my fellow Doom Charts crazies, like mix master Chris Tighe (The Mighty Decibel), cool Justin Wittenmeier (Metal Temple, DoomedForMetal), the brand new kid on the block Eric Crowe (Doomsayer Records / Halo Of The Goat Radio) or old hand Steve Woodier (Anointing The Sick), are better at appreciating and assessing the quality of certain albums from those genres. But after pressing play on the new Death Beat album by the Russian three called Dekonstruktor, I immediately was hooked on all those, errr, hooks. Hooked on their grind. Their approach to the earlier mentioned genres implores an abundance of groove and melody, even if those are on occasion subterranean and surrendered to the noise on top. Almost all of the tracks implore some stomping doom or a droning element that will get you into a white-out kind of daze. But they all switch it up with industrial moments, sludgecore and noise elements. And all of that sounds harsh, but for some reason, as we stated earlier on, the amount of groove and melody turns these over forty minutes of white-out, black, death, doom, into something desirable and addictive. Death Beat is full of life and it will sharpen your senses…

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

It’s Friday, the final Friday of a month, which means a new Doom Charts is lurking just around the corner. Most of our time is therefor devoted to getting that all sorted out. But we still managed to wrangle out a little thing we call Quick Fire Friday! A dark, twisted, black and doom version of Quick Fire Friday this time around. And we know… All those releases, singles, ep’s, albums, they are worth way more of our time! But you know how it is… There is so much out there, so much good and heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. Another Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Ad Nihil – No Eternal Truth

Out on Addicted Label, Russian six piece Ad Nihil delivers yet another incredibly dark and twisted album called No Eternal Truth. Bleak and black metal, doom, sludge, noise and hardcore are only a minor part of the incredibly forlorn and hopeless sound, that the vocals grunt and the story tells. A story about the crisis of civilization and emergency for mankind, the total decay of everything…

Tattered The Wall – Shedding Season

Out on Cursed Monk Records, Tokyo based trio Tattered The Wall are a guitar less, instrumental, sludge, industrial, junk band with bass, drums, and unholy amount of noise. Not meant for the fainthearted and not meant for easy listening, this will distort your vision and make you stop eating, hang upside down, and spin yourself into a silky cocoon. Hoping, you will emerge one day, a butterfly… But you will probably turn into a radiating bloat fly…

Vuara – A Normal Man

More Cursed Monk Records and more blackened noise metal from Russia! Vuara brings you speeding hardcore doom sludge and pure chaos. Cassettes for A Normal Man are out via Trepanation Recordings, but the sound on the five tracks in anything but normal. But if extreme hardcore metal is your cup o tea, than yes, Vuara has a kettle for you to pour from. Scalding hot, boiling metal!

Sky Pig – It Thrives In Darkness

Sky Pig, the name always makes me think of Animals by Pink Floyd, which saw a new version releases recently. But the Sacramento trio, delivering its full-sized debut It Thrives In Darkness on Forbidden Place Records have little to do with or time for the Floyd stuff. No, they deliver metal, of the doom and sludge variation, with some definite menacing post-metal and ominous psych influences interspersed. Scuzzy, fuzzy and filthy.

Ommnus / My Pitbull Lucifer – Split album

No Profit Recordings is releasing a split album between Ommnus and My Pitbull Lucifer, both delivering five tracks. Well, MPL does six with an intro track, but let’s now dwell on that. But instead dive together with the astronaut on the amazing cover art, into the punk doom metal, the blackened sludge, the hardcore and speed metal, the alternative rock, the stonerrock and the weird mixture of all of those. It’s good, it’s awesome and it’s split right down the middle!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

It’s Friday… Well, it’s still Friday somewhere right?! Bandcamp Friday perhaps? Or at least Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday, right?! Yes sir! Or madam! But today we’re doing things slightly different. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday has always been a collection of the weird, the strange, the different and the older stuff. Well, today, we’re going to namedrop a lot of other stuff as well… Our love some of those magical people out there that do that label thing! Most of it was sent to us somewhere in 2021, and we can only get to it now…  And we know, we know, the albums, bands, artists and labels deserve more than the few words we will jot down here. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Electric Relics Audio Artifacts

We’re starting with Electric Relics Audio Artifacts. Tanner Olson from Across Tundras very own label. And most of everything he offers on his bandcamp page is, Name Your Price! There are over 80 releases on his bandcamp page. And for a Friday, there is so much to listen to and so much to choose from! So, you’d best get yer furry little ass over to Electric Relics Audio Artifacts and get crackin!

Detieti — Serious IV

Progressive funk, krautish punk and total experimental freedom! That’s what Moscow five-piece Detieti is all about. And they get incredibly serious about it on their newest release Serious IV. Already out there since December 2021, released through that freaky Addicted Label, it’s over thirty five minutes of freaky prog abandon and bizarre outbursts for a sci-fi soundtrack that all each of the five members envision going into totally different directions… Serious about wild music? Get some Serious IV!

Addicted Label

But WAIT! We just mentioned that awesome Detieti release Serious IV from the Addicted Label; but Addicted has been bringing out some much wild, wonderful and weird stuff; turning us into a definite label junkie! And in that messed up year of 2021 we’ve not gotten around to mentioning so much of that drug that got us hooked… Well; to sort of get clean… Here’s a rundown of a few!

Thy Grave – Filth

Thy Grave gives us ‘death-doom catharsis’ by way of sludge, metal and so much filthy noise… Thy Grave was spawned in 2012 as a project of several people scattered across the vast expanse of Russia. Initially, the band got inspiration from such monsters as Loinen and Khanate and didn’t use guitars in their records at all, just bass and a shitload of distortion. And that's where Addicted Label came in... And it evolved into much much much more... Just dig into that Filth...

Megalith Levitation — Void Psalms

Megalith Levitation materialized from the eternal void and acid vapors of Chelyabinsk, Russia in April 2016 to bare their psalms into this world. And Madman Tony Maim loved their earlier Acid Doom Rites release! Can you already hear that perfect Addicted Label  fit? On Void Psalms they give us all they have and whip us into a frenzy with their psychedelic doom, acid metal, sludge and so much unhallowed rumbling low-end!

Crust — Stoic

Stoicism turned crust and Crust gives us Stoic. Black, death, sludge, metal, doom turned into maelstrom of noise, core and hell depth gutter! Typical Addicted Label insanity! It will fill you entire being, all of your thoughts, all of your emotions, all of your actions and all of your extremities with their form of extreme metal meditiation.

Stonebourne – Squirrels On A Plane

We move away from Addicted to bring you something old and something new… And something else to get Addicted to... No label for these cats. Yet? They sent it to us at the end of the summer of 2021; but they had already released it a year earlier! Indeed, it’s 2022 and we are mentioning the Squirrels On A Plane record by German quartet Stonebourne. Grunge with hardrock, alternative and stoner influences and a whole lot of ear pleasing melodies. So, 2022, 2021, 2020 or the nineties, whatever year you hear… It’s good and tasty rock!

Kentucky Green – Galactic Acid

And we finish this Quick Fire Friday sesson with an absolute banger! They came in at the 100th spot (in points) of the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2021 and we never got around to mentioning them even though we had been grooving to their stoner doom blues ever since it got to us somewhere around the summer of 2021. The Brisbane three called Kentucky Green delivered nine damn fine tracks on an album called Galactic Acid. With some sweet and sexy soulful attitude straight out of the seventies this is the galactic kool-aid everyone should be guzzling!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Perhaps you noticed the lack of updates on the HiVe… Well, we’ve been doing a lot for the Doom Charts the past weeks. And with another little trip coming up; everything else had to take a backseat. But the Doom Charts schedule will soon return to normal and after we return around the 7th of February; so will the HiVe. Si senor, after that, Stoner HiVe will commence the normal show as well… But before we head out on another little trip, we leave you with yet another Quick Fire Friday about 2021 releases… Cause there is still so much out there that we love to mention! So, why not do loads at once during a Quick Fire Friday session?! Why not indeed! And we know, we know, the albums and bands deserve more than the few words we will jot down here. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Heidrún – Heidrún

It came out during the European summer this Mexican stoner and sludge gold; six tracks that steamroll you like the supermassive mother sludgers that they are! Indeed, I stole the Komatsu line to explain what Heidrún sounds like. No that they sound like Komatsu; but they do have that barreling attitude! Massive sludge, dark stoner and some prog and psych touches to keep things exciting. Damn good stuff! I should ask my buddy in Mexico to do an interview with these cats!

Dark Ocean Circle – Bottom Of The Ocean

The four from Stockholm, Sweden that are Dark Ocean Circle delivered their four track Bottom Of The Ocean EP in November of 2021. Hardrock, metal, with overtones of all that’s heavy. Stoner and a seventies approach give Dark Ocean Circle enough cool energy to power through the four tracks like a meteor. And down there on the Bottom Of The Ocean the stoner metal sound gritty, raw and majestically bluesy!

Grey Moth – Love & Hatred

A first single from a new doom metal duo called Grey Moth. They hail from LA and embrace the natural balance of power between good and evil, dark and light, ugliness and beauty, life and death. Love & Hatred is the lead single for the album, recorded with Jack Shirley (Deafheaven) that will arrive somewhere in March. It’s doom. It’s dark. It’s grey and it’s mothy…

The Soul of Salem – From The Hands of Witches

The Soul Of Salem consists of four Italians that hail from Bari, way down south, where the heel of the boot begins. They released their From The Hands Of Witches EP when the first lockdown started. Back in 2020 and therefor never took the time to really promote it. Which is a shame, for the bluesy doom, the swaggering psych is enticing, it has soul and it deserves to be heard. So, go ahead and click that bandcamp link.

Old Sea and Mother Serpent – Plutonian

That Addicted Label keeps releasing wicked underground doom acts from the East side of the globe. Old Sea and Mother Serpent is one of those duo’s that melts doom, sludge, stoner and drone into one noisy melting pot. Four tracks give you an intense almost eighty minute ride through the dark and twisted landscape. A slow ride…

Deep Valley Blues – III

What’s in a name right? The blues! The Deep Valley Blues! Well, the four from Catanzaro, Italy definitely play the blues, but a gritty, hardrocking, stoner infusing version that has some sludgy moments and some metal thunder. The eleven tracks on III will have no trouble luring you in; in fact once the bluesharp hits in that first song, you shall definitely be hooked! Hey, they did not make the December Doom Charts of 2021 for nothing! As Madman Tony Maim already remarked: “The blueprint is rock but Deep Valley Blues have stomped their own brand of riffage, producing a slew of meaty, heavy stomp monsters!”

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Weekend

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Weekend

And here it is! The second day of the second ever Quick Fire Weekend! Just because we got so much back catalogue of singles, ep’s, news and weird stuff that we just want to mention. But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The second ever Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Weekend! And it burns even hotter... Hot like molten lava!

Moonworshipper – 13 Fullmoon Nights of Doubt

The beginning of the 21 minutes long 13 Fullmoon Nights of Doubt track definitely grabbed me. That voice, the guitar, the atmosphere painted… And they immediately lose me when the black metal guttural screaming begins… Moonworshipper has everything going for them; and I love everything about it… Except from the pitch of the guttural screams… But everything else; damn fucking interesting!

Her Highness – Visions of a Lower Life

I love Hungary and I love Budapest. And I can definitely feel something for the instrumental doom/sludge project Her Highness and their newest release on the Addicted Label called Visions of A Lower Life. Cavem3n - The Stalefield incident

The Stalefield Incident is a highly enjoyable diesel blues album. Indeed, the band is called Cavem3n, they hail from Lysekil, Sweden and produce some fine hardrocking blues, touches of stoner, a bit of a grunge and a whole lot of attitude. The quartet knows how to riff, wail and retro rock ‘n roll the shit out of you! Damn fine incident!

They hail from that lovely town of Helsinki, Finland. They’re three honorable warriors - seekers, questers, and crusaders of mad chivalry. They’re The Paladin. Let’s hear more o’ honorable Paladin!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Weekend

We did it before! And now we’re doing it again! A Quick Fire Weekend! We just got so much back catalogue of singles, ep’s, news and weird stuff that we just want to mention. Need to mention! It keeps us awake at night. And it gives us sweaty palms when we’re working on other articles. So, here it is, the second ever Quick Fire Weekend! Hot like molten lava!

Slugg – Yonder

A doom metal trio from Rome, Italy called Slugg released their official first single Yonder a few weeks ago. Element of stoner, prog and proto seep through during the ten minutes of Yonder and makes you wonder what these cats can do once their full-sized album is released. Cause there is much to discover here and those slower more atmospheric moments are executed as well as the fast paced thundering!

Tigers On Opium – The Perfect Cocktail

We did this little chat with LáGoon’s Anthony Gaglia somewhere in April and when he listed all those awesome bands from Portland the list went on and on. Tigers On Opium were of course one of the first mentioned and rightfully so; just listen to their new hard rocking garage stoner track The Perfect Cocktail. The perfect propellant for a wild night out! Put this on and it will turn into one of those nights you will never remember. Punk, pulp, stoner and sleaze! The Tigers have it all!

King Black Acid and The Rainbow Lodge – One Of My Favorite Things

Mazinga Records and Cavity Search Records released quite a few singles by King Black Acid and the Rainbow Lodge during 2021. One would imagine all of them together would make quite a hefty spacey, stoner pop and acid freak out grunge album. Latest single One Of My Favorite Things combines all that with some indie rock and neo psych; and even some tiny americana tones. It’s good, it’s fun and it’s One Of My Favorite Things

The Universe Is An Ocean – The Universe Is An Ocean

The self-titled debut album by The Universe Is An Ocean came out on the Addicted Label and The Swamp Records somewhere around Christmas 2021. The forty-two minutes long one-track album is indeed a ‘soundtrack for psychonauts’ as the press release states. The Universe Is An Ocean is a one-man operation by Balázs Söptei from Budapest, Hungary. You might know him from Vanta or Kajgun. This project delivers psychedelic drone metal and ambient rock destined for the outer reaches of the universe or the inner reaches of the human mind. Whichever route you prefer; but it will make you dream, that much is sure! And yes, the forty-minutes length is intentional…

Da Beumb Project – Fairly Consistent

Bass and drum duo Da Beumb Project hails from Montréal, Québec, Canada and gives us eleven fast paced punk, grunge, metal and sludge tracks on their fairly consistent new Fairly Consistent album. Started in 2011 they manage to have every track on this album stand out due to the fact that there is something different about it. As if they suddenly had a little snippet of an idea and immediately modelled a track around it. And that makes it all Fairly Consistent

Oddplay – Heritage

Bulgarian duo (or trio) Oddplay delivered the amazing Bluff record early 2021 and at the very end they then came out with yet another smasher called Heritage. Grey Mouse – A Moment of Weakness

Grey Mouse – A Moment of Weakness
Addicted Label / No Name – 2021
Rock, Noir, Blues, Americana, Country, Gothic, Psych
Rated: ***

A Moment of Weakness is a beautifully composed and executed bluesy Americana, country rock album filled with gothic and noir elements. It’s their ninth release (perhaps more?) since Russian Grey Mouse started back around 1990. The vehicle for all that Alexey Chunikhin wishes to convey. Down beat and filled with slow and mysterious sounding instruments that seem to draw out this babbling brook with tiny pencil lines. The cello of course takes centers stage and casts its long and magical shadow across the entire album. Highly atmospheric it touches on certain seventies inspired psychedelic elements but never actually goes that route, it just slowly meanders through the deep thought landscape. Gloomy, dreary and dark the eight tracks evoke images of sand slowly being cast across a table of light turning into the most wonderous of images. But even though you are enjoying this impressionistic, magic realist approach to rock noir, you might feel it’s just a bit too serene, too peaceful for the stories it tries to relate and it could use a waterfall or two or some rapids turning A Moment of Weakness into a twisted twinkling of turmoil…

The Three of Tuesday

The Three of Tuesday

Yes. I know. We depicted a tree for this Three of Tuesday post. But Stoner HiVe likes to rustle the feathers and mix things up. And for the Three of Tuesday we will try and something different on occasion. We unfortunately did it only once; but now Shastabeast has gone and stirred up the pot! In a big way, cause he highlighted four instead of three releases… That dirty beast! Check out what he has to say about the awesome [addicted label] from Russia and a few of their releases! Heeeere's Shasta!

And now for something a little different. In the burgeoning underground scene of Russian Federation, [addicted label] has been a one stop shop for all things heavy since 2011, dealing in experimental noise, acid psych jams, sludge, and everything in between. Highlighted below are just a few choice parts of the well curated catalog, with plenty more to dig into.

Juice Oh Yeah - Sila Vselennoy

Juice Oh Yeah! This is eerie, mystical garage doom with psyched out Sabbath roots, drawing you into some dangerous yet groovy ritual. A different and attention grabbing take on bluesy doom.

Pressor - Weird Things

Brutal weighted sludge with a weird, spacey edge to it. Pressor's wall of sound is mercilessly crushing.

The Grand Astoria - Punkadelia Supreme

A frenetic, unpredictable, and totally unique melting pot of stoner rock, psych, folk, southern rock, and more. The Grand Astoria's endless creativity is akin to the likes of Caustic Casanova and King Gizzard.

Pressor/Diazepam/Soom - Split

A perfectly filthy split of doomed sludge. Pressor flattens all in its path with ten ton riffs, Diazepam brings utter madness with sickly distortion and paint peeling vocals, and Soom's plodding tone is so low it's subterranean.

And do you remember, chalk hearts melting on the playground wall.. Errr.. Sorry, we meant, do you remember Megalith Levitation or Disen Gage ?! Both addictive and [addicted] as well!

Megalith Levitation – Acid Doom Rites

Megalith Levitation – Acid Doom Rites
Addicted Label – 2019
 Doom, Sludge, Heavy Pysch
Rated: ****

Playing music that affects the heart as well as the head, Megalith Levitation mix up an alchemists brew of doom/stoner and heavy psych. Drones and riffs are cranked out at volume with a healthy abuse of fuzz boxes. With song passages and atmospheric interludes that have the cosmic feel that untested drugs can invoke, when the Sleep type riffs start to explode and morph into fucked up Spaceman 3 loops of trance inducing psychosis, you know you are on to a winner. Layered, distorted vocals are reverb drenched and put pretty low down in the mix, adding to the sense of strangeness that runs through the songs. This a is a fully formed statement of intent from a band that can truly claim to be forging ahead in the psych doom/stoner world. This is bong music of the highest order. Space is deep.

Disen Gage – The Big Adventure

Disen Gage – The Big Adventure
Addicted Label – 2019
Rock, Prog
Rated: ***

The seventh album of Russian collective Disen Gage is called The Big Adventure and it’s not just one hell of a journey, it’s a party as well! From pointy and hooky moments to jazzy and frolic playing, it’s all there and it’s all incredibly cheerful. Eight compositions that get to the core of progressive rock and celebrates its jazzy influences and isn’t afraid to drag you along with meandering rhythm changes and tracks that seem to bounce like a gumball on a trampoline. You get torn apart by atmospheres and moods that border on the delirious and are all encompassed by the bright clear and crisp production. This is progressive rock indeed; progressive with many colors and hints of luminous phosphorescent energy. A happy adventure it is!
