Another week in the books! Returning from yet another festival to see a wonderful July Doom Charts edition. Will be spreading the good word about it soon as well as doing that Stoner Hype thing! You know, where we try to write a sentence or two about the Numbers 40 to 26… We did not manage to do much last week, too busy and had to leave to early. But even so, we hope you glanced at the words about that damn fine prog metal record by Rendezvous Point, the damn cool and damn heavy Espectro De La Conciencia, Jon McGough’s sweet as hell write-up about The Blacktones and of course that way too long screed about one of the albums of the year, Science, Not Fiction, delivered by Orange Goblin. We hope to do more this week! And know that in a few hours we will be diving head first into the fine words delivered by Ronny Dijksterhuis about that awesome Occult Witches album! So, stay tuned, stay with us, stay heavy!

It’s Monday again! And I’m wondering where the week went! But as usual, we had loads of rent-paying work to come to grips with and a ton of other appointments. But we listened to some great music and hope to mention some of them with a few words soon! But we did post about Greenleaf, Earth Tongue and La Sainte Rock Festival. And let’s not forget the awesome Black Capricorn; we’re still honored that we were able to do the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for their best album so far. And as the weekend commenced, we also got to mention the new album by Slovenian three Jegulja. What a monster! Check’m out, check’m all out!

Jegulja - Anguilla Guerrilla

Jegulja - Anguilla Guerrilla
God Bless This Mess records – 2024
Rock, Metal, Stoner, Instrumental, Prog, Blues
Rated: *****

If you know their earlier albums Darkest Light and Exit Sandman you will wonder if the Slovenian three called Jegulja have decided to swim around in a different rock pond once their new album Anguilla Guerrilla commences. Cause those earlier albums were eccentric progressive and highly metallic pieces of instrumental rock. But as the seventh drummer since their first incarnation that started in 2013 runs up to his drum set and quickly tests if the sound is on, you will wonder if they have turned into a blues rocking outfit. Cause opening track Damage Control is that freak blues, that punk blues, that diesel blues, which will get your motor running and gets you into the groove bright and early. Those blues roots continue along as a minor undercurrent throughout most of the album, even though it turns more metal, progressive and stonerish quickly. Second track Zombie Casanova as a matter of fact immediately thunders out of the gate to become this off beat and quirky progressive metal monster. The classic, gothic touched guitar motif during the middle part perfectly fitting within the composition, giving both guitars time to circle around each other, luring, enticing and making both of them twinkle like that glint in the eye of a sneaky Casanova. Audible immediately is how meticulously every song was crafted, instantly apparent as well once third track Consider It A Favour graces your ears. Making expert use of the two guitars, running across and dancing around a demanding and massive metal drum roar that turns jazzy and with a choppy punk groove later on to show off the expert use of unpredictability, which is something Jegulja has always cherished. Formed in Ljubljana in 2013 by Jan Kozel, ex-member of Carnaval and Jure Gašper from Uroš, they had Rok Večerin 'Wuko' from legendary metal band Lene Kosti deliver the beat for that first five track demo Finese In Blat. For the new album Rok 'Boogie' Henigman from Golliwog joined the team. The man also played with skate punk thrash band Straightline and survived many other projects. It’s his first recorded album, but he sounds like an old hand, just listen to closing, funny titled re-recorded track Baby Pictures Of Famous Dictators. (It was also present on that first demo.) It’s his drumming, his way of catching air, of letting the sound drift that gives that opening ominous riff that dangerous edge. Dangerous, but always with a sly wink. And both that menace and that humoristic touch seems to be prevalent on most of the songs, turning the Anguilla Guerrilla album into something very special, a bit elusive and yet extremely attractive. And for those of you that fear there might be an insurrection soon on the British Caribbean island Anguilla, it also means eel in Latin. Just like Jegulja means eel in Slovenian. And in every language, it’s a slippery fish…

Stoner HiVe’s Top 5 Most Listened To Albums Last Week…

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 5 Most Listened To Albums Last Week…

The struggle continues. And it looks like it will for quite some time. But we’re gonna just go on with the Stoner HiVe show as much as possible. Even though, while most have been able to take things slower and work from home, part of mine will take me to the streets and towards all people who need help. Delivering medicine to everyone’s doorstep. Which will probably mean, HiVe time shall be limited. As it will for Madman Tony Maim, the man is on the forefront of the disease as he works in the Hospital. Much love and respect goes out to all those who work in Hospitals across the globe and to our very own Madman in special. Thanks and keep doing that magic you do! And now, we continue on with the telegram style tam tam update of the past week. Stoner HiVe’s smoke signals of the most played Top 5 records. On heavy rotation has been the new Glooming Dawn record by Phe, which shall be released on April 11th. We saw the pretty sweet drawn video for The Lion & the Snake; but the record is much better! Languid fuzz and steamy stoner, straight from the desert. Get ready for Phe! And Jegulja we ofcourse mentioned last Wednesday, their instrumental Exit Sandman record continues on where Darkest Light left us, wanting for more. And this is more on every level! So much groove, so many layers, prog, psych and everything so intensely heavy! Stunning! And yes, I Saw The Deep and their Vimana release will not stop rotating here. A gigantic slab of doom, progressive and psychedelic, deep sci-fi rock, which features power rock drumming with metal riffing and grungy vocals. A cathedral of heaviness if ever there was one! Omens, by Elder, out through Armageddon Records and Stickman Records, continues their very own experimentation and exploration of all the psychedelic genres to an incredible degree. We’ve been loving every Elder release since the HiVe got started, and this will definitely be a new one to adore and treasure. Out next month, it will have you travel through time to distant futures and flow along the sands of time and the magnetic currents. Wild and wonderful once more! The Secret Of Our Time is brought to us by Siena Root. And flows perfectly along the Elder record, giving us another side of the society medal. Out on MIG, the seventh studio release of the Swedes, celebrates all the good stuff from the golden days of rock. One can call it retro or you can call it pure solid gold. Either way, this is one that will play extremely loud and will have you dance around the room, the yard or the attic! Whatever your preference! As long as it is in your house and alone! But since all who listen will be doing it, you will not really be alone. We are with you! Dancing that same weird dance! Check’m out! Check’m all out!

Jegulja – Exit Sandman

Jegulja – Exit Sandman
Self released – 2020
Rock, Stoner, Instrumental, Prog, Metal, Psych
Rated: *****

I will of course always miss that original incarnation of that awesome Slovenian band called Carnaval. But it’s demise did spawn another damn great outfit, namely: Jegulja! With their new album Exit Sandman they have produced another fine piece of instrumental heaviness. Seven amazing tracks that seem to go an bit deeper than those that featured on their debut Darkest Light. Seminal track might be that title-track, which indeed seems to be inspired by Metallica’s Enter Sandman. But only to the degree that the main riff comes across as spin-off into a different dimension. It shows that these cats can envision entirely different worlds to every rhythm and riff. Continuing on we get treated to miniscule worldly elements that give this album exactly that right amount of extra spice and layers. In fact, it often contains so much extra in the way of groove or stomp that you sit and simply listen in awe. It’s those elements together with the prog and psych influences that swing and sway through all that heavy rock and add so much extra to the mixture. Yes, we are going over board again with the praise, but we cannot stress enough that the three Jegulja cats have once again come up with something stunning! Exit Sandman, is otherworldly good! And it is an absolute must have, hear and hoard!

Jegulja – Darkest Light

Jegulja – Darkest Light
Self released – 2017
Rock, Stoner, Prog, Psych, Metal, Instrumental
Rated: *****

The new record Darkest Light by the Slovenian trio Jegulja has been spinning without ever stopping. Well, only to be exchanged for the new album by his former band Carnaval once every so often. For we loved Jegulja's 2014 demo output Finese In Blat and we loved everything the man did with his former band. So, it has been hard switching between Miss Universe, the new album by Carnaval and this one. But they are two highly different animals and Jegulja’s Darkest Light is definitely more on the psychedelic and jam-oriented side of stoner. There is some of that groove present we love from Carnaval, but the trio here wants to build more and seems to be more focused on tension and arcs instead of songs. Don’t get me wrong, the eight compositions on this record have their heads and their tails, but it seems to be the middle part that demands most attention. Highly accomplished drumming, fills every nook and cranny and still leaves room for the guitars to excel. Two guitars, one baritone, tuned down and one Strat riding the high muddy waves. With it, they deliver eight intense rides that beg to be enjoyed over and over. Three of them were also featured on the earlier demo and at least two tracks beg for a vocalist to do something wonderful. But that is something for a next release perhaps? For we love this instrumental heaviness! As we return once again to the beginning of the record, the only thing left to question is to try and figure out where they bought their hovercrafts?

Stoner HiVe's Top 5 Artists listened to last week

Stoner HiVe's
Top 5 Artists listened to last week:

Activator (34)
Dealer (30)
Jegulja (28)
Carnaval (22)

Activator suddenly appeared on the radar again, thanks to fellow music fiends. Their 2004 released Both Barrels still holds firm after twelve years. Should we demand a reunion? The new Dealer album Billionaire Boys Club is definitely one hell of a grungy, punky all out assault on all the senses. So, buy a villa, a boat, a plane and the album and join the club! Jegulja, founded by a former member of Carnaval released it's first official album. Which goes to show that Slovenia is responsible for so much goodness. Cause together with his former band Carnaval they both have released one of the best albums to come out these past two months. So be sure to get groovy with Jegulja's Darkest Light and Carnaval's Miss Universe. The Marcus King Band brings forth the blues rock gold in pure form.Soul-influenced psychedelic southern rock and powered by high octane diesel! Thanks to yet another one of the lovely music fiends out there...

Only good stuff!

Jegulja – Finese In Blat

Jegulja – Finese In Blat
Self released – 2014
Rock, Stoner, Doom, Prog, Instrumental
Rated: ****

The man left Carnaval and soon after started a new project called Jegulja. And looky here. The three-piece has now delivered a first three song demo ep called Finese In Blat or Finesse in Mud if you feel the need to have it translated. Three jam-like heavy tracks that plow over you like a speeding tractor. Which are named in accordance to their very own humoristic style Wig Pigs, Baby Pictures Of Famous Dictators and Nord. Which seems to be the odd one out, title wise. But how about that trucking sound that is so palpable on those first two majestic songs? Well, this one seems to even rise a bit higher. Cause the mud is everywhere. And on those first two songs the mud is sky high. But on the final track Nord, the guys seem to lift off and soar across their earlier devised muddy fields. Holy hell, Jegulja. Now here’s a slippery fish we all need to catch and devour whole. After which it will leave you wanting tons and tons and tons more. Luckily, we can now be pretty sure that their hovercraft is full of eels as well! So get on board. And eat till your belly bursts!!!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday segment will be a weekly feature of a handful of bands and only a small amount of words to help spread their musical prowess…

Omega Sun – Rehearsal Demo 2013

Today we visit lovely Slovenia. First up is Omega Sun. A recently formed instrumental trio that recorded their first two-track demo back in December of 2013. Two groovy stoner tracks that are both wickedly heavy and monstrously fuzzed-out. Want to feel the heat of summer of generator parties and massive riffs? Check out Omega Sun! (Psst. Word on street is they’ve also been drinking with a vocalist? So who knows what the future holds?)

Jegulja – Live

Former member of the mighty Slovenian stoner groove formation Carnaval started his own band: Jegulja. The first gigs have come and gone. Free for all stoner freak out music meant for the open minded and open hearted. An instrumental trio that tunes their guitars low and let’s the drummer take charge… Strange and extremely challenging… Even though the soundquality isn't really good; Check out Jegulja!

Broken Lock - Want to exit this ergastulum?

And to keep things Slovenian; let’s revisit the 2009 album Want To Exit This Ergastulum? by the crossover progressive alternative sludge metal formation Broken Lock. And with jazz and stoner elements is difficult to pinpoint and that’s what makes them interesting… And a new album is still waiting; just behind the horizon…
