Gingerpig – Ghost on The Highway

Gingerpig – Ghost on The Highway
Suburban – 2015
Rock, Hard
Rated: ****

We’ve been smitten with Gingerpig ever since we heard their first demo back in 2009. It then took till spring 2011 before we were treated to the amazing album The Ways Of The Gingerpig on which they let the Hammond do the talking, the guitars do the wailing and the vocals the mesmerizing. What a debut album that was, it still spins regularly and the track Dimlighted Heart so often I lost count. After which we saw some line-up changes before we got the damn fine Hidden From View in 2013 and with yet some more changes in personal they now send out into the world their third record: Ghost On The Highway. The wildness that was displayed on earlier albums has given way to heaviness and straight on truckin. This is hardrock. Hardrock with a definite penchant for the old school version that we got from Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Hardrock with a definite love for the blues. Add to this some stylings a la Wishbone Ash or Thin Lizzy and you get a whole new incarnation of what Gingerpig was all about. A Gingerpig that is always on the road. Without an organ to slow them down and with a steady driver gunning for the horizon. So if you are in need for a soundtrack to a vicious day and perhaps a night long drive, pick up Ghost On The Highway, it will keep you focused and aware of all those spirits around you…

Their debut album The Ways Of The Gingerpig by Boudewijn Bonebakkers new outfit Gingerpig was a classy and successful adventure into the world of classic hardrock, blues, seventies rock and progressive currents. And as lover of those golden eras you could taste the pure love the guys themselves have for that time period with ever note and every melody. So after that first album; we could only wait for the next one and hope it would be just as good. Especially when news came of the departure of organ man Jarno van Es. What would that do to the sound? Well, Hidden From View continues on where the debut left us. The trio has once again delivered damn fine songs which are once again dyed with Hammond, jazzy drum fills and groovy percussion. The biggest difference is probably the feeling of the songs; much more concrete and less jammy. Even though their eclectic nature has not diminished one bit. With Run they start their raid, Nothing is the hard rocking winner and closing track Ugly Heart is the shiny black prize in the end. Brilliant!

And now we can only wait once more for their new stuff. This time around bassist Sytse Roelevink has left the band and Stef Gubbels from !Pendejo! has joined the band. What will that do?

Gingerpig – The Ways of The Gingerpig

Gingerpig – The Ways of The Gingerpig
Suburban – 2011
Rock, Hard, Free, Psych, Stoner, Soul, Funk, Prog, Jazz, Blues
Waardering: ****

As a sort of 'weekend break' during this Rancho De La Luna Month I wish to bring you a couple of albums I cannot bear waiting with until june. Cause these are all absolutely brilliant and I've been waiting for all of them for a while now. As for this one for instance: I’ve been waiting for a few years now for the debut album The Ways of The Gingerpig by the Dutch band Gingerpig. For those who saw them during Roadburn Introduces know who they are. Founded by Boudewijn Bonebakker, who used to be part of deathmetal-band Gorefest, his new band is a perfect piece of free rock. With a screaming Hammond we swirl though eight incredible songs. With the sixties and the seventies as banner and with the ghosts of Zappa and Beefheart on their shoulder we are served a mixture of blues, progressive, jazz and hardrock on a plate without edges. And all those different styles are neatly fused together to deliver one perfect treasure chest filled with musical wealth. Tasty bombastic without becoming overwhelming and often chased as if the Devil really is on his heels. And everything recorded analog and live. And then we have conservatory drummer Maarten Poirters who succeeds, without a doubt, in making us forget about former drummer Ries Doms; freakishly good in his fills and even better in space. A truly wonderful debut effort on which the Bonebakker vocals serve as beautiful icing on the cake!

Gingerpig – Demo

Gingerpig – Demo
Unreleased – 2009
Rock/Psychedelica/Blues/Stoner
Waardering: ****

Founded by former Gorefest guitarplayer Boudewijn Bonebakker and with drummer Ries Doms audible on this unreleased demo. Gingerpig is a band without boundaries or lines within which the sound needs to be colored and with a massive love for vinyl and analog. The band has a record-deal with Suburban and their debut-album The Ways Of The Gingerpig will be released at the end of April. And even though the sound quality of this unreleased demo is very poor the amount of freedom and musicality displayed by the band is already pretty incredible. Hopefully there will already be a record available during the Roadburn Introduces gig on Saturday at 13:30 in Cul De Sac. Cause personally I can’t wait to hear these freaks live and on vinyl!

Roadburn

Roadburn

One more day left, thirty hours and counting till Roadburn… The blood is boiling and the skin is itching… Sold out in 15 minutes once again and it will surely also be one gigantic awesome trip once more; as it is every year. With so many great bands in the line-up it will be impossible to catch them all. And should the choice become too difficult; then we can always just sit in the sun with a beer or two and relax for a moment. Be sure to catch the Gingerpig gig in Cul De Sac though on Saturday at 13:30… It will be testament to pure free rock!

Hooghwater quits…

Hooghwater quits…

Today we bring you sad news… One of the most interesting and genuine bands hailing from the Netherlands of late had decided to call it quits. Hooghwater is no more. The band was on the verge of entering the studio and producing a follow up to the brilliant record Echos from 2009. But before you do that you have to have everybody looking in the same direction. Difference in view on which creative path to take seems to have caused the rift. Drummer Ries Doms: “Sometimes you have to sit down and compare views. And sometimes this means you come to a conclusion that everybody wants to do something else. But our friendship was never on the line.” (3voor12 Tilburg) Now we will have to wait to see what the other guys will be doing; cause Doms was of course already preparing his fellowship with The Kik. But I reckon all of us would rather see him continue to play with Gingerpig; and of course Hooghwater… Sniff…
