Minerall – Strömung

Minerall – Strömung
Sulatron Records – 2025
Rock, Kraut, Space, Psych, Jam
Rated: ****

Minerall is improvised rock… Since 2023. They released their first two track adventure called Bügeln in 2024 and is now back with another wild instrumental space, psych and kraut rock exploration of ebb and flow, of surging energy and of psychedelic wanderlust. Minerall is a project of Marcel Cultrera (Guitar, Speck), Tommy Handschick (Drums, Kombynat Robotron, Earthbong) and Dave Schmidt aka Sula Bassana (Bass, Synth, Zone Six, Interkosmos, and many more). The new voyage is called Strömung and is comprised out of two tracks, both around twenty minutes of length. Minerall is good, great even and Strömung is stunning and I had it high on my Doom Charts list for March. And our good Doktor420 had it as his Number 1 spot. It unfortunately ended up on Number 49. Minerall manages to bring out the best of the members involved and combines that best into a spirited ride through the cosmos. Recorded at the same time as Bügeln, when the three met for a birthday party jam in Yannick Aderb's studio Buffbergen, this release seems to come at the perfect time for all you heavy heads that need a calming, some comfort and balm for the mind. And knowing this was recorded together with Bügeln, well,  there might be even more great releases in the future. The ease and flow of the three, and how they drift along the current and bounce  of each other is stunning. Strömung does not offer up any resistance, it’s freeing and as you let your mind wander, you will feel the caress, its ripples salve you heart and soul…

We've been pretty under the weather the past two weeks. Is this the new flu? The cough still isn't gone. But on other fronts, we can sit up again and enjoy the heavy magic! The new Stoned Jesus album Father Light for instance, out soon on Season of Mist, with that stunning opening track, setting you up for their perhaps most reflective album ever. Or that new Wave Cannon album by The Machine! Majestic Mountain Records is releasing that one! And there has been so much more heavy gold released during those two weeks of illness... It's good to be able to get out of bed and enjoy all that wild and heavy stuff again!!

Earthbong – Proceed As One

Earthbong – Proceed As One
Self released – 2023
Metal, Doom
Rated: ****

We mentioned their One Earth, One Bong EP back in 2019. And we are saddened to our deepest core that we have to admit that we never got around to mentioning Bong Rites back when it was released in 2020. Especially since we are not the only ones that dig the German trio that go by the name of Earthbong! No, no, no, the one and only Mike Scheidt, who you might know from a little band called Yob has been shouting from every rooftop he can find how much he loves Earthbong. A “They’re like a Bongzilla, Sleep milkshake!” he exclaims with great relish! And he isn’t wrong. Especially when you dive headfirst into the new two song EP Proceed As One! Fourteen minute opening track Fathead starts off with a radio broadcast about drugs and the hallucinations they might induce. Before, the feedback starts howling and the riff begins its slow and heady march towards the swing and groove we know Earthbong can and will deliver. A rolling thundering landscape of riffs and thunderclap drums enfold. And it’s at the 4:20 mark when the bitter and bleak, black and burned vocals come in. Taking you on a circling dance, much like a giant beast, inspecting its prey, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce. This section will return after that wild, electrifying guitar freakout and so will the radio broadcaster with its expose about all sorts of drugs. In the end they try and take the entire groove apart and it all becomes more like a death rattle, destroying a vicious song with a brutal and abrupt ending. The second track Wax, ups the ante when it comes to monstrous sound. Like a doom pile driving trio hitting the core of the earth, unknowingly opening a gateway to a demonic netherworld filled with deathly chants and filthy tones. Earthbong gives us two tracks, but those two tracks give you everything you need to get your fix and to dance around in an harrowing phantasmagoria…

We were honored to receive a full (unfinished) chapter of the soon to be finished book by Sunil Singh called Sonic Seducer, an infectious read that immediately had me grabbing for my Monster Magnet albums as well as Kyuss. If his Math books are this riveting and cool, I think I might need to get me those, a calculator and run some numbers! As for the week that's just started, we hope to publish a review or two, before Friday. But we're kinda under the weather and have other assingments as well... So, no promise there. But as said, I think we can do one or two... We have to, it's what makes us tick...

Earthbong – One Earth, One Bong

Earthbong – One Earth, One Bong
Self-released/Sludgelord Records – 2018/2019
Doom
Rated: ***

Hazy wisps of smoke permeate the atmosphere with a villainous odor and a poisonous spirit. And there you are, on a worn down couch drinking lukewarm beer; sitting and just waiting for something. Something ominous and creeping. And those twisted moments when one needs aromatic fumes to distort reality also needs slow heavy metal to set the pace. Three-piece Earthbong from Kiel, Germany self-released their One Earth, One Bong record December last year. It is the perfect soundtrack for such a night. And it now becomes available through Sludgelord Records as well. On it are four tracks that will have you hypnotized and zoning out through a seemingly endless array of slow riffs and intense drums. Only to be awakened by the beastly growls or an accidental and minute, speed-up. Those never last long and soon you will drift away again on those majestic doom clouds. This is doom! Slow malicious doom. And what’s not to love about that?
