Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

It’s Friday! And over on the Doom Charts, we’re doing a crazy amount of Friday Freebies again! So, if you are a heavy rock addict and a bandcamp enthusiast, head on over to the Doom Charts for your new favorite album! Over here on Stoner HiVe we’re doing a Quick Fire Friday Session! And you know what that means… Only a small amount of words to get the good word out! The good word about something bad ass, something heavy and something cool! Check it out below… And we know… There is so much out there, so much good and heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. But here it is… Another Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Cascavell – Bluehouse Terror

Cascavell brings you seventies swagger, eighties sleaze and a whole lot of attitude on Bluehouse Terror. It’s their new single and will rock you like a hurricane! Especially if you dig that Motley Crue, Guns ‘n Roses, Aerosmith vibe, long to be back in that era. And yes sir, that vocalist might indeed induce some terror in you! What a throat!

Dryland – Monomyth

We love Monomyth. But the new Dryland single is not an ode to that Dutch band. It is however the lead single for their upcoming Weekend In The Swamp album, out on October 27th. And since we dug their Dances With Waves album from 2020, you can bet your ass we are digging the new single which features guest vocals from Violet Vasquez of Mount Saturn. And we can safely assume we will love the full album as well! For this track alone stomps on the terra like a monsterous beast!

Mothman and The Thunderbirds - The Simpsons = Real Footage (2023 Redux)

Ay caramba! It's out today! An all new version of their 2021 song The Simpsons = Real Footage, remastered and re-energized by Egor Lappo. Additionally, Alex Parkinson has provided a new bassline and some added bells and whistles to take this lively thrasher to the next level. A lively trasher with lively female vocals offset against that growling male. Next level Simpsons, well, this surely calls for a celebration, right!? D’oh!

Prosthetic Bung - The Curse of Castle Bungenstein

We mentioned them before and we can keep mentioning them on a monthly basis, cause they keep delivering new crazy noise constantly! They're as horrible as that King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard gang, just constantly putting out new stuff once simply needs to hear! And well, the all new The Curse of Castle Bungenstein is out on Forbidden Place Records which means Prosthetic Bung is going places! Very limited in amount, the scary tribalistic noise and doom punk on this vinyl might burn a hole right through your speakers…

Endre – Demo 2

I'm sure we mentioned before how much we love Hungary and the city of Budapest. If we did not, well, let's mention it again, we love it! So when the three tracks from the Hungarian trio Endre came around, I was immediately excited. And rightfully so, it turned out! Cause well, these tracks will enchant every listener, with their dark gloomy sound and the amazing female vocalist that will surely bewitch. A bit of doom, psych, the alternative nineties and grunge, the Endre three know exactly how to navigate the heavy under current and pay Charon enough to make it to the other side. This is really damn freaking good!

L'uomo Nero - Voda Alebo Ohen

The end is Nero! Sorry, my mind always seems to do that. Weird connections. But hey, weird seems to fit these three from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Surely, for this third EP is the finale to the occult rock trilogy provided by the three from L'uomo Nero. Voda Alebo Ohen delves further into their very own Lovecraftian music thriller. Desert blues, garage, punk and alternative rocking with that romantic, gothic, and Romanesque magical touch. Wild gypsy stuff! And yes, those other two EP’s are equally stunning!

Clementine 9 – Alligator

You want weird? You want mysterious? Get a load of Clementine 9! And perhaps find out more than we could about this outfit... More ramshackle garage blues rocking goodness with Alligator by Clementine 9. A horror touch and a whole lot of suaveness. Yes, once heard, the mysterious Clementine 9 will definitely leave a mark… A bitemark!

The Great Lie - Vertigo

I recall one night in a place called the Effenaar, somewhere around 1998. A buddy of mine had been in a terrible car accident, his leg was surgically pinned together and he was walking around with crutches. Ordered to give it a lot of rest and not to strain it too much. But we went to a Madball concert anyway. Which by chance, might actually have been the tour with John Lafata on drums, the drummer responsible for laying down the ruckus with The Great Lie. And the new Vertigo EP by The Great Lie transports me back to that time! It’s in your face, New York Hardcore, charged, ravenous and raw! And honest, cause that's what The Great Lie is all about!

Nyxora - Good Night Ophelia

And we end this Quick Fire Friday with another gothic touched, romantic, dark cabaret rocker called Good Night Ophelia. It’s by Portland four Nyxora and wanders slowly through classic metal genres and psychedelic inclined hardrock. With an amazing, almost fantasy vibed atmosphere this one three and a half minute song knows how to perfectly set a wonderous scene. There’s something highly seductive about this one… It will definitely lure you in...

Book of Wyrms - Storm Warning

Book of Wyrms - Storm Warning

A day to rejoice! There’s a new single by Richmond, Virginia’s Book Of Wyrms! It’s called Storm Warning and marries eighties metal to hardrock prowess and space rocking elegance. A touch of doom and flurry of psych to make this one single the perfect calling card of a new chapter for Book Of Wyrms! Let’s hope the rest comes soon!

It's melodic, driving heavy metal that’s still weird and spacey. Moody female vocals ride on fuzz bass and razor-sharp Marshall leads, as flying saucer synths lurk in the back. The song is about the destructive prowess of weather, and what happens when humans seize that power. SW was mastered by Rob Wrong (Witch Mountain) and features blacklight art by Stephen Krakow (Plastic Crimewave). If you dig doom, psych, or space rock but can’t spare 20 minutes, this jam’s for you.

Storm Warning lands somewhere between 80’s Priest and Lemmy’s Hawkwind. This will be the band’s third release on Albuquerque’s Desert Records.  In 2021, BOW’s third full length “Occult New Age” was released worlwide on LP, CD, Cassette, digital download, and on streaming platforms.  In 2022, a stand alone single (and extended version) called “SodaPop Glacier” was released on streaming platforms and bandcamp. An incredibly hardworking band full of wonderful individuals, Book Of Wyrms has a rapidly growing fan base. The band took their music to Canada for the first time in May of 2023. This is a band to watch, as they continue to rise to the top of the heavy underground.”

Fatso Jetson / Dali’s Llama – Legends Of The Desert Vol.3

Fatso Jetson / Dali’s Llama – Legends Of The Desert Vol.3
Desert Records – 2023
Rock, Stoner, Desert
Rated: *****

I have this weird relationship with split albums and have not reviewed many for Stoner HiVe. I do follow certain split record series, cause on some level they are excellent. Think Ripple Music’s Turned To Stone or The Second Coming Of Heavy chapters. And Desert Records is doing an equally stunning job with its Legends Of The Desert series. Which started off with Palehorse/Palerider & Lord Buffalo. The second installment featured The Penitent Man and Cortége. And now they’ve managed to get two honest to god, bonafide, Legends Of The Desert for the third episode. We’re talking Fatso Jetson and Dali’s Llama here! And both bring their own desert rocking flavor to the split album.

First up is Fatso Jetson with four tracks that meander from desert to blues, to stoner, to punk, to garage and back. A lot of meandering and slow moving rock, that feels orchestral or even orquesta, especially on the two instrumentals. Second track Angels Flight sees punk troubadour, desert pirate and sand poet Sean Wheeler adding his vocals as an extra magical touch.  Opener Night Of The Living Amends, is a slow sailing instrumental rocker that feels warm to the touch and gives off this classic desert rocking feel. With added keywork by Mathias Schneeberger, it also gives off an eighties television series vibe. And then you get hit by Angels Flight, which tells its story as the sun seems to go down on a warm and shimmering city and even though the red glow of the setting sun makes it all seem beautiful, there is woe here, luck running out and a darkness looming. That double voice when the second part of the tale comes in, will tear a rupture through your soul and leave a scar on your heart. Following instrumental rocking Todas Petrol Blues will blow away the emotions from Angels Flight and give you a more Palm Desert and Rancho De La Luna vibe, staccato riffs, robotic drums, all very elusive and yet in your face. One of Seven, the Final Fatso, as languid as the rock might be, the hammer still comes down, or better yet, swings. Even though in this case the meaning of the lyrics might be elusive, the instruments do this very stand fast thing, which makes you think the lyrics might be about facing the music and standing your ground.

Dali’s Llama are always on fire and always provide you with something different than what they did before. We only ever mentioned their Desert Lung EP on the HiVe, which was hundred percent desert punk. This time they get a bit heavier, turning up the blues, the proto touch and even the doom. And like Fatso Jetson they also give us four tracks. Four tracks that immediately show their darker, storm cloud colors with the two openers: Coyotes In The Graveyard and Lizards. Both definitely desert animals that strike hard like a hammer from the gods. And then comes Rarified, a more stoner trucking monster, with delicious bass work and a dead certain destination to get to. That is, until there’s a break in the song, and a bluesy banjo, thanks to Mikael Jacobson, articulates what feels like a summer drizzle that might turn into a full-on down poor any second. Side B and the album ends with Hypnotic Wind, which returns to the more thundering doom approach from the first two Dali’s Llama tracks. And the lyrics of all those Dali’s Llama tracks, brilliant and enchanting.

So as you might have gather from the text and abundance of adjectives above, this is a truly magical desert rock album. Insanely beautiful and overwhelming you with the highly different takes on what desert rock is all about. In short, there will never be a better desert rock split album. The legends turned out something legendary for Legends Of The Desert Vol.3.

It’s the start of the new week! Or does yours start off on another day? And it looks like it might be a good one when it comes to having time to do Stoner HiVe and more. The past week held an interview with Dani Filth about the new Cradle of Filth live album and had me listening to the Top 10 above. Can you do the math? There are eleven bands listed! Indeed, it felt right this way. Because the new Desert Records album Legends Of The Desert Vol.3 has been on heavy rotation over here, featuring Fatso Jetson and Dali Llama, both with four tracks, both amazing four tracks and therefor equally important! Hope to do more for the HiVe later today! Perhaps something about that Legends Of The Desert Split? Have a great week y’all!

Book Of Wyrms - Occult New Age

Book Of Wyrms - Occult New Age
Desert Records / Dewar PR – 2021
Rock, Seventies, Psych, Occult, Doom
Rated: ****

The past two weeks have been extremely hectic, giving us less time to listen to the good and heavy stuff out there and even less time to do the HiVe thing. But that new Book Of Wyrms record has not been passed over. In fact, it has been spinning like crazy and when the Doom Charts called for a blurb, we quickly jotted down a few words. Occult New Age is a luscious blend of seventies rock, occult metal, doom, psych and all that’s good and heavy into the spiked kool-aid we all need to drink from time to time. Together with the folky touches, this little diamond will make you flashback to all those great acid parties you might not even have experienced. You should spend a few bucks on this, let yourself loose, throw back your head and screech out the Book Of Wyrms name. Do that three times in a mirror and they might turn up in your living room for a live concert. Who knows? An Occult New Age is dawning…

Red Beard Wall - 3

Red Beard Wall - 3
Desert Records - July 2021
Sludge, doom, stoner, punk
Rated: ****

West Texas riff merchants Red Beard Wall return with their third album, aptly titled "3", this July, and mastermind Aaron Wall's winning formula of crushing sludge and catchy melodies delivers once again. True to form, Wall's lyrics evenly share the stage with his amps' harsh noise and the stripped down drums. Alternating between understated cleans and throat-shredding screams, the vocals are brutally earnest yet hopeful, making each track an urgent call to action against society's many ills. Even before getting to the meat of the album, instrumental opener "Tap" sets the stage with a massive, gnarly guitar tone as an earworm riff snakes along the groove. Follow-up "March Forth" then dives into the band's signature staccato drum assault, slabs of weighted sludge grinding over a very literally marching beat. The track is a powerful, no-bullshit sendup of the US's recent and current struggles, a timely and refreshing change of pace in the genre. Highlight cut "My Brothers" hits even harder, shifting from melodic beginnings to battering waves of distortion as Wall makes a heartfelt and inspiring case for himself and his fellow men to do better by their "mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters". Wails, feedback, and thunderous kit-work send the track to its epic conclusion, and the listener even deeper into Red Beard Wall's latest opus. "3" is unrelentingly heavy in every sense of the word, from a band unafraid to speak their truth and hammer it home with style and power.

Doors To No Where – Darkness Falls

Doors To No Where – Darkness Falls
Desert Records – 2021
Rock, Stoner, Punk, Grunge, Desert
Rated: ****

They’ve been around since 2010; but to be honest we’ve only been familiar with their 2016 recording The Haunting. But now that their new album Darkness Falls has gotten its hooks in us, we will definitely check out the rest of their stuff and not lose track of the trio that is Doors To No Where ever again! There’s a new bassplayer on board for this record and Fu Manchu’s very own Bob Balch riffs along on the title track and final piece of music on Darkness Falls. The orchestral and grandiose gestured Who Died? is the sixth track on the album and it’s the first hint of the magic to come on that closing title track. For it’s an almost eight minute battleship that starts off so intense and earthy and in a perfect tempo that you cannot wait to see the desert flower slowly blossom into the beauty that is. And it does, shows you every color possible and delivers itself in all its glory. Is it justified to single that one final track out? Indeed, it is not. For we have already been shocked into submission by opening banger Lie, Lie, Lie and that majestic groove of Policy could have gone on forever if we would have had a say in it. It’s all very impressive and hearing all these eight tracks shows perfectly that the Doors To No Where three know precisely what their best qualities are. And they bring it all together on Darkness Falls, perfectly balanced.
