Blue Heron – Everything Fades

Blue Heron – Everything Fades
Blues Funeral Recordings – 2024
Rock, Stoner, Desert, Metal
Rated: *****

As we inch closer to the deadline for YOUR lists for the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2024. Namely, before Saturday December 14th, 8.00 CET. We decided to deep dive into that folder full of albums we desperately had wanted to mention this year. We wrote about something like 250 albums and EP’s this year. But in that folder, there are still some 400 more that we had wanted to bring into your peripheral vision. And we are saddened that we will never get to that… But well, besides trying to keep up with all the new ones coming out, we’re now trying to bring into the spotlight one from every month passed that we unfortunately did not mention during the month they were released.

As you crazies that follow the HiVe know, we tend to mention the small bands, the ones just starting out and the first EP’s. This means we don’t mention a lot of the big albums, the bands that are already on everyone’s turntables, the ones everyone know are amazing. And possibly, due to the fact a lot of people mostly read reviews to confirm what they already know, that confirmation bias thingy, we might have gotten a view or two more if we had written more about those albums. But we don’t really do this for the views, we do it for the love of heavy rock and discovery of the unknown. But well, here comes a big one! For Blue Heron released their Everything Fades album in September, and since the promo arrived in July, we had been swept off our feet by it for quite some time. It’s one big album, an album that needs to be heard from start to finish. The way it builds, trekking up the mountain, and then on top, spreading your arms wide, having the sweet release of fifth stoner and desert rocking anthem Dinosaur before rolling down the mount again. The vocals change color whenever a track or even a section calls for it. And that minute moment, when he sings that line about ‘unswerving and united’ during the title track Everything Fades and for a small second sounds exactly like Lanegan. Simply wonderful. There’s tautness throughout the nine tracks, it pulls you along and only after you finish final one minute seventeen long Flight Of The Heron stoner metal ditty do you realize the journey you have been on. It is a piece in constant motion, and it cultivates your radical attention. Perhaps it does not leave you breathless, for the tonal perfection, the pristine production and the space every instrument is allowed to occupy provides you with oxygen. But it will leave you in awe of its towering soundscape…

Morning… FB / Meta has been out of control recently. The Doom Charts has had issues, even though we changed nothing in our operation. And for those following Stoner HiVe, well, you know there’s been loads of annoying stuff happening there as well. And now the news came that the always good, always decent, nothing but good Mel Lie from Sunday’s Heavy Tunes has been completely banned from FB  for no reason whatsoever. You would hope that someone starts a new social platform soon. Incorporation that which was good from FB and keep it completely clean of the nonsense, algorithms and bots FB has been using lately. Wishful thinking? Well… It’s another week and we’re gonna try and post this thing. Shall we try with or without links? Let’s see what happens and fingers crossed it works as it has always done in the past… Cause with new members Jon McGough and Ronny Dijksterhuis we have more capabilities to spread the word on all that good and heavy stuff out there! And it is deserved for them and the bands they write about. Quine for instance or Yajaira! We mentioned clips by Luna Sol and Occult Witches and managed to post that Stoner Hype thing where we blurb about the Numbers 40 to 26 of the last Doom Charts. And let’s not forget, we were honored to premiere that full album by Kahfa, out now on Argonauta Records! Go check it out! Check’m  all out!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

We love Friday’s! As we mentioned before. And now we even get to continue the run-down of the November Doom Charts! We love spinning all of them in a row once again. But, it will have to wait another hour or so. Cause well, it is Friday… And you know what that means!? It’s Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday time! A few lines about some stuff we got sent and dug! Dug a lot or felt we had to share with you all! For there is so much good and heavy music being released every day! And we know, we know, the albums and bands deserve more than the few words we will jot down here. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Domo – Aldorassa

We’ve been honored to host a few premieres for Spinda Records. The last one was Santo Rostro from that awesome many singled project about the Spanish underground Spinda Records was releasing. Well, they just put up the new Domo single Aldorassa. And we all love Domo! Their heavy progressive psychedelic sound is exactly what one needs… On a daily basis!

The Ghost Of Fu Kang Walker – Where Wolves and Wiccans Roam

'Introducing The Ghost of Fu Kang Walker; a not-so-straight-forward vintage rock/fantasy metal band from Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. With an official Birthday of Halloween Weekend, 2021, and a shelf life that is sure to span eternity, The Ghost of Fu Kang Walker invites you to listen to their first song - Where Wolves and Wiccans Roam.' We stole those lines from their Soundcloud page. And assume; that we are allowed to share the track with everybody out there. It makes me think of many things, but mostly Kung Foo, Chuck Norris and a multifunctional baby walker… Because well that's just me...

Blue Heron – Black Blood Of The Earth

We had been listening to the awesome two-track Black Blood Of The Earth release by Blue Heron for a while before the Red Lead PR guy, and member of the band, sent over a PR-mail. “Blue Heron is a four-piece band from New Mexico creating our own mix of authentic desert rock blended with elements of doom, stoner metal, and heavy psych.” It is. But the two track starts out very sludgy, intense and swampy before the vocalist’s second voice hits. Which immediately goes into Alain Johannes territory; opening up all the senses. Which are quickly mashed into a pulp again by all that doom, all that sludge and all that metal! And all that’s good! It fits. Thow two voices; but personally I dig the clean version more…

Waste A Saint – The Healer

I am intrigued. Recently signed to the All Good Clean Records label from Norway, is fourpiece Waste A Saint. Waste A Saint plays fuzzed out hardrock, balancing aggression and sunburnt feelgood in an intense dance between influences from the 60s and 70s music and the heavy footprint of the stoner era. Well, the new single The Healer delivers all that on all fronts. But it’s the other influences that really draw you in; those drums, that voice and that guitar… That voice... Trondheim… I am intrigued!

Slog – Graves

Death Doom from Toledo, Ohio. Out on Morbid And Miserable Records, it’s the new album Graves by two piece Slog. A new project by the Nothing Is Real dude. Morose, slow, slog, bog and dark. There is nothing here for anyone looking for a moment of light, hope or peace. This just gets blacker, bleaker and will turn every mind into one that is at the end of its tether…

Baron Crâne – Les Beaux Jours

We’ve always been a fan of those three crazy Parisians! Indeed, we mean Baron Crâne! And they released their seven track Les Beaux Jours album already back in October through Mrs. Red Sound. Even more jazzy, even more fusion, even more progressive than all those releases they did before this will demand a bit of extra will to get high to. Well, until that African hypnotism starts!
