The weeks are flying by! And soon we will depart on our three weeks off grid holiday adventure, hugging the border between France and Germany as we go south to Italy, towards the Turin region, and the mountains in the vicinity. But we still have a few days to do a few HiVe posts… Although probably not as many as we did last week! First up: A FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for the Hypnosaur album Afterlife! Coming at you in a few hours!

Last week we posted quite a few words by our inhouse poet: Ronny Dijksterhuis. Did you manage to look at  Stump Grinder? Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell? Gnod? Or his faster than shadow work for the Quick Fire Friday? Which we continued on with a Quick Fire Weekend! (Saturday  & Sunday) Those three Quick Fire posts along will give you twenty-four albums, ep’s and singles to check out! And we upped words on the amazing new Iguana Death Cult and stunning Robot God. And then there were those two Premieres! The monastic doom album by Maliciouz went live on our little blog. And the beautiful new single Adrift by Phe! I hope you listened to those on the blog or on their own pages the day after. Wonderful stuff! O’ and me mentioned the Doom Charts Peroration, cause we were at Sonic Whip Festival went that one went live. Last but not least; we put the words online about the new Hypnosaur album Afterlife… And that beautiful album will see its FULL ALBUM PREMIERE on our little HiVe in only a few hours… You ready for that? And have you been checking all of it out? Hope so… And we are truly honored if you did!

It’s Kingsday over here in the Netherlands, and we’ve just returned from a two day break at the beach with our little six year old niece. Which meant, no updates and no time to keep track of everything. And last week, well, we had our Thursday and Friday spent doing all that Friday Freebie madness for the Doom Charts! As well as heading over to Tilburg for an amazing live show by Naxatras! If they ever turn up in your neighborhood, don’t miss out! But we did do a little last week and most importantly, that FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for White Tundra! Have you listened yet? Or that Black Toaster record! Which came out in February, highly addictive stuff! All of it… So check it out… All of ‘m!

Number 4

Number 4

To reach Number 4 we jump almost, hold on to something, two thousand points! That’s right, we land on the spot that holds my personal favorite album of the year. Released back in April on Stickman Records this is the album that inhabits that ‘free rock’ spirit and can clearly be viewed as rock for the ‘free spirit’. We had to add a few words ourselves when they landed the Number 1 spot on the April Doom Charts: “A live experience by this band is always a singular event. Adventurous, emotional and spiritual. It heals the soul and mends the heart. That is probably why they’ve already released quite a few of their concerts on vinyl. On their new studio album, with a new drummer in their midst they’ve managed to capture more of their live energy and serve it up as the perfect example of how to catch lightning in a bottle. Or perhaps more like fireflies, circling inside the jar before being released into the cosmos to perform that wonderful free rock dance. For that is what the band is about, release and freedom. And their psychedelic free rock searches its own way and knows, without any resistance, to find its way into your heart. With a magical feeling for subtleties and control, they manage to keep you enthralled for an hour and fifteen minutes long. Letting themselves be guided even more by the whims of the great magnet and lettings their egos disappear with every note. Just listen to that beautiful Josephine, that slow meandering start, the lyrics uttered by one of the three vocalists until the moment that his love is being sucked away by a storm. The way the whirling guitar lines ascend, not dark, but almost heavenly. You feel the pain, but also a form of serene understanding, which radiates and sounds so beautiful. Calmness and tranquility descends, like a faint summer breeze as you stroll through a flowery meadow, somewhere high in the mountains…”

The new week has started and the week past was filled with three interviews, a concert (actually on one day) and a festival. So, yeah, little time to HiVe, but a lot of time spent with music! And we still managed to mention a few releases… Like the amazing new Yawning Man album and that devastating Modder release! Who showed their maximalist prowess on Helldorado Festival in Eindhoven, Netherlands. What a wicked show once again! And we had to pay attention to our very own in house poet Ronny Dijksterhuis! He’s doing a poetry challenge this month and is a true sculptor with words. Will there be more time for Stoner HiVe this week, we can only hope! If not, you can always use the way back machine and check out any of the older posts. Who knows, you might have missed something somewhere… Grin!

Mornin everyone! Final few days before we depart for the road trip through Italy. And that while we still need to get grounded after another wild and wonderful edition of Sonic Whip Festival. Absolutely one of the best indoor festivals around! Loved every minute and show I saw but the performances by Karkara, Khan, The Devil And The Almighty Blues, Elder playing Lore in its entirety and the tears that welled up during Temple Fang will forever be edged upon my heart. Many thanks to all the venue, the organizers, the bands and the fans once again. What pure bliss to have been a part of it again! We hope to do a few more Stoner HiVe posts before we leave devoting every spare second we have. But they are severely limited, so we cannot say how much we will be able to do. But you can always enter the 'wayback machine' and scroll through old Stoner HiVe posts from the last sixteen years if you are hungry for some freaky HiVe stuff or visit last week’s post by Stevie Reek about Pearl Handled Revolver or words about Mandy Manala! And get ready for that FULL ALBUM REVIEW for Mandy Manala happening THIS WEDNESDAY! Have a great week everyone! Much love!

Temple Fang – Lifted From The Wind

Temple Fang – Lifted From The Wind
Stickman Records – 2025
Rock, Psych, Free
Rated: *****

Temple Fang are here with five long masterworks built around psychedelic passages, spiritual journeys, and enlightenment. There’s a true sense of wonder and divinity as the emotional vocals put you in a state of heightened awareness across ‘Lifted From The Wind’. The four piece from Amsterdam utilize progressive structures and heavy psych across the long-form backdrop to create a mind-blowing album that resonates deep to the core. Like an ancient spirit speaking through the darkness, Temple Fang are the radiant light reminding you to close off the outside world and nourish the inner mind, body, and soul.

The first single, ‘The River’, is a great introduction to the band, their sound, and what to expect for the duration of ‘Lifted From The Wind’. With a running time of over eighteen minutes, it’s not even the longest track on the album! Just as the song, a river flows with no fixed path, there are twists and turns. There’s expansion, transformation, and growth. The three pieces of ‘The River’ flow flawlessly altering the riverside, eroding the ground from underneath. With the gentle beginnings of ‘Once’ we are presented with a different vocalist, in fact three-quarters of the band provide vocals on ‘Lifted From The Wind’ adding more diversity to an already talented roster of musicians. It’s a slow building track with shamanic spoken words, a sanctuary of thoughts that flicker like candlelight, afterwards escalading into cosmic swells and electric storms.

Exhale the tension, exhale the world, everything under the sun is golden. A bountiful yield of psych enriched melodies and bottom end vibrations await you on ‘Harvest Angel’. The polychromatic layers and changes of time implore you to turn face from the sun and follow the rainbow. Though ‘The Radiant’ is the shortest song on ‘Lifted From The Wind’ it is a mighty force to be reckoned with, shining its bold rays of harmonious vocalizations throughout while keeping the mood pleasantly buoyant. We are one with everything upon this earthly realm seeking the guidance and acceptance of the universe. ‘Josephine’ shifts from a beautiful, sunbathed day of warmhearted memories to a more dramatic turn in musical direction and events, with fear settling in after the loss of love to the ravages of time.

The struggles of the band from lineup changes to the dreaded plague have forged Temple Fang into a band with an iron will. Fortunately, their desire and strength to carry-on outweighed any of the detriments thrown their way and with ‘Lifted From The Wind’ have elevated themselves farther beyond possibly what even they could have imagined.

Good morning! It is a Tuesday, we know. But the Monday was different and today feels like the real start of the grueling week ahead of us. But we will try to HiVe as much as possible! Be sure to check in later for a few words on the new Void King. And definitely check in tomorrow when we have the honor to premiere that new Void King album, The Hidden Hymnal: Chapter II. It’s savage and powerful! Last week we also put up a few words about Messa and were blessed with the new Black Magic Tree single. How groovy is that one right? Stevie Reek wrote a blurb about Lilac Vegetal and Jon McGough wrote something length about the new Nightstalker. And of course, lets not forget, the Doom Charts Peroration for March went live. Lots of great music, lots of heavy albums! Hope y’all have a great week!

Temple Fang - The Radiant

Temple Fang - The Radiant

We love Temple Fang and have probably said so many times. Journalism is never objective and music journalism even less so. And when it comes in the form or a blog that professes its love for so many albums so many times, you know it will always be that: the celebration of everything good and true in the heavy underground. In the eye of its beholder, your writer of service. But since there is no such thing as objectivity in writing, we usually just come out with it immediately. State the obvious and take it from there. We love Temple Fang! And we love the new album The River, longform free rock in its most purest form. Featured to day, the second single The Radiant. The most accessible, easiest to grasp, (read: shortest) track on the album. I loved that they came out swinging with the almost twenty minutes long The River single. And I guess it felt like a righteous poetic bookend to follow it up with the shortest track on the album. Which drops on April 25th through Stickman Records and will surely cause a psychedelic free rock tsunami of love…

TEMPLE FANG premiere "The Radiant" video single
from upcoming studio album "Lifted From The Wind"

Due out on April 25th via Stickman Records!

"There’s an engaging hook delivered in harmonized layers, and with “The Radiant,” Temple Fang position themselves among Europe’s finer prog-psych."
JJ Koczan (The Obelisk) about Temple Fang's new single "The Radiant"

April 25, 2025 will see Amsterdam prog-psych spearheads Temple Fang release their much-awaited, new album, entitled "Lifted from the Wind", via Stickman Records. Coming on CD, Vinyl and in Digital formats, the pre-sale is available at this location!

Following a previously-released first single - the epic 18minutes album opening track "The River" - today, the heavy psychedelia rock collective has shared a music video for their latest single "The Radiant".

Forming in 2018, Temple Fang really started hitting their stride in 2019 with, amongst many others, two highly acclaimed Roadburn shows and appearances at many festivals and clubs across Europe. Having no release out yet and thus creating much anticipation to what their recorded output would end up like. With alternating lead vocalists, two wildly harmonizing guitarists, a powerhouse of a rhythm-section, and armed with truly psychedelic compositions fueled by their exposure to South American plant-medicine, the band took the heavy-psych underground by storm and seemed to be gearing up to bottle this magick and commit it to their studio debut. And then 2020 happened.

During the pandemic the band stayed as active as possible, appearing on whatever live-streams they could, resulting in well received appearances on Eurosonic and National Dutch Television, creating even more buzz. A string of seated shows followed, whatever it took to keep playing.

Losing their original drummer, the band continued on with a replacement post-covid, putting out a half live/half studio album (Fang Temple 2021), an EP (Jerusalem/The Bridge 2022), multiple live albums (Live at Merleyn 2020, Live at Freak Valley 2023, Live at Krach am Bach 2024), and playing a seemingly endless string of shows from Oslo to Milan, hitting many festivals in between. Roadburn, Desertfest Berlin, Sonic Blast (twice), Palp and countless others were exposed to the magick of this true free rock n’ roll phenomenon, leaving audiences stunned and clamouring for more.

Fast forward to 2025 as Temple Fang is ready to release "Lifted from the Wind" on Stickman Records. A record they themselves consider to be their true debut studio album. On this sprawling double record, released on the only label they would give up their independence for, Temple Fang appears, for the first time in their existence, fully formed.

Fierce and strong, hard rocking yet elegant, with 20min+ psych freakouts and prog ballads side-by-side, Temple Fang truly delivers on the promise they’ve always held, to really stretch the possibilities of what it means to be a rock band in 2025. With spectacular wild-man Daan Wopereis as a full member on the drums, Temple Fang now can deliver on their commitment to really rock, to blow your mind AND tear your heart out. Rock n’ Roll as a means to attaining spiritual freedom. Mind-bending riffs, triple vocal harmonies, dubbed out bass and groovy yet hard hitting drums, ecstatically rocking and truly psychedelic, Temple Fang delivers it all with LOVE. Longform rock for fans of Motorpsycho, The Grateful Dead, Hawkwind and Hendrix!

In support of "Lifted from the Wind", Temple Fang have been confirmed to return to Roadburn, to play this year’s Spark on Wednesday, 16 April, and will embark on an extensive European tour this Spring. Find all upcoming live dates listed below!

Morning! Hope everyone will have a great week. This is the Monday that starts a new week at home after that wonderful small vacation in the Austrian mountains. So this glance back and Most Listened Albums List is actually glancing back at last week and the week before. Cause, last Monday we were shooting down the slopes in grand fashion. Two weeks of posts takes us back to the Badlands Festival announcement, the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for Drunken Crocodiles, a Jesse Stilettö write-up, words for Torpedo Torpedo, the mention of that wild live session on KEXP by Travo and the new Deafheaven. But Ronny Dijksterhuis graced us with two beauties about Dead Groove and Stiff Buscemi… If you haven’t go back and read through those, check out the list of Most Listened Albums above or on Spotify and get ready for a SINGLE PREMIERE, which we will do very soon…

Back… From the mountains…

We’re back from Austria! And once again, not in one piece! But not that badly hurt… Just a minor concussion, sustained on the final day. So, we had great fun and much better snow conditions and weather than expected. It was glorious! Now, only some 250 emails for Stoner HiVe to go through and a huge bunch for all the other accounts as well. But we will be in full HiVe mode soon enough! If the headache does not become worse… What a glorious April 25th it will be! Cause, we just spun, the new Miss Lava, out on Small Stone Records, April 25th. Spinning now: the new Temple Fang, out on Stickman Records April 25th.  And after that? You tell me!

Another week passed and another one in front of us! We’ve got a small break coming up, starting Friday, heading off to Austria for a few days of snow. But we will try to put up a few post before that time. Most importantly of course, that wild FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for Drunken Crocodiles this Wednesday! Aegony is a great album and will be out on Friday. But you can hear it on the HiVe two days earlier. Last week was Ronny and Jon week, with Bongsilisk and Trombolia reviews by Ronny. And a Komatsu write-up by Jon. Besides Drunken Crocodiles, we also mentioned the Deep Cuts album by Red Fang and singles by cool Slung and the amazing Temple Fang! That one Temple Fang single The River already feels like an album and a world on its own. Imagine how the rest of the album must feel… Check’m out, check’m all out!

Temple Fang – The River

Temple Fang – The River

We’ve never made any secret of our love for Temple Fang. And the new album Lifted From the Wind, to be released on April 25th through Stickman Records is sure to cement that love even further. Out now, the first single The River, which flows and nothing abides, nothing stays fixed, it sweeps you along gushes you forth as a sonic white water rapid or a meandering brook… Almost twenty minutes of long form free rock. Utterly freeing and arms stretching ever wider…

TEMPLE FANG releases epic first single, "The River", from upcoming studio album "Lifted From The Wind"

"With 'Lifted From the Wind,' Temple Fang posit their creativity not only as a communion with each other -- a conversation of instruments -- but with something more ethereal. It's a special, deeply honest record, and whatever Temple Fang do from here on out, a landmark in the life of this band. You'd be lucky to see others working under its influence." With the album opening track "The River", today, the heavy psychedelia rock collective is presenting the first single from their new studio offering. Their first recording with new prodigal drummer Daan Wopereis, a new energy surges through the record from its opening salvo and continues along the epic track's entire 18 minutes. On "Lifted from the Wind", every song is a journey and "The River" is no exception.

Or as the band writes about the song:

"A river as a path to follow, hearts and minds in constant flux, searching for a common purpose: Salvaging a bond in apocalyptic times, making a pact."

Temple Fang & Phe – Live at Muziekcafé Helmond

Tomorrow, April 1st, some might be so lucky to catch Temple Fang perform the second show of their new Tour at Muziekcafé in Helmond. The long form, space rock, psychedelic masters are finally able to take the stage again and hypnotize all those lucky bastards in the crowd! Support will be done by Phe; the Helmond three that never got to celebrate the release of their Glooming Dawn album, due to that sordid pandemic business. So, the best band of the Netherlands and the best band of Helmond on one bill… You might need to score yourself a ticket! Or more, cause your neighbor might need to see this as well before they become as big as the Beatles!

The Doom Chart for June 2020

Doom Chart

“Despite everything, no one can dictate who you are to other people...”  ~ Prince

Not sure what’s going on in the world right now, but with the lack of consistency in our day to day lives, we sure are kicking ass in the heavy underground. There seems to be a continuity of killer vibes coming within our music community. June brings our biggest month to date in terms of contributor engagement, competitive edge, and new albums domination. The top 8 albums all scoring in the triple digits each barely edging out the next. Music continues to find a way to keep us positive in a time where negativity is trying its best to take us down. High praise to the riff, and all hail the community we’ve amassed. The Doom Charts are here to stay!!

What a list once again! We voted for only a few of them. Can you imagine? And it’s a first for me, cause it is the first time I haven’t had the time to listen to the Number One of this months Doom Chart yet. Wow. But if my compadres vote it the best of last month, we sure as hell know we need to remedy that real quick and we sure as hell know that we are in for a good time! Temple Fang’s live album Live At Merleyn is spinning as we type this; but afterwards it on to Bonehawk and their new Iron Mountain record!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and album reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge metal, stoner-psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…
