It’s the first Monday after the first announcement for the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2025 has appeared online! So, good morning and I hope many of you will send your list before the deadline of 20:00 CET, December 14th of 2025. Still two weeks away and we hope to write down some words on other wonderful albums this week. Last week we only had time for the amazing Ambra album, the stunning call to arms that is One Dimensional Creatures and finally posted some words about the landmark that is Mark Lanegan’s Bubblegum XX. Let’s aim for one more this week! Either way, we hope you will slowly start jotting down your favorites of the year, so you can send that list our way! Much love, have a great one!

Number 1

This is it! We’re here. January 1st. Happy New Year! And we thank you all again for voting for the Countdown and then following along. We love doing it! And as we stated before, it is why the little old Stoner HiVe blog started back in 2009. We jump 296 points from Slomosa on Number 2 to get to the album that received the most love from all the albums that were showered with love by you all this year. It arrived early this year and its by the band that made the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown back in 2020 as well, with that years’ amazing album. Number 9 back then and they receive the Gold Medal this year. We are once again so happy we got to see them whirlwind around the globe and catch them many times live in one year. That 2020 album was amazing, but this one is different. This is much wilder, rougher and more disturbing. With almost white-out droning noise moments, contrasting those prog rock turning into kraut instances and vocals that might haunt your dreams. Grandiose in scale and execution, the main goal for this album seems to have been to keep the listener strapped into a chair, floored on a boat braving a storm or a rocket ship blasting through space, never knowing what comes next, but always keen to find out. A story about an expedition in the distant past, bringing people together in a community, through a language they share. This odyssey seems to define a distinct shared world from which heroes have sailed and to which they attempt with varrying succes to return. The West was shaped by many an odyssey that was first chronicled in the East. This album, Herculean in proportions, as rich and as powerful as it is, is an odyssey that might shape the music of a future to come…

According to all of your votes, on Number 1 we find:

Mornin! Hope everyone had a great weekend. Mine was still filled with a fever that came and went and coughing fits that had sea lions across the globe looking in my general direction and asking me to keep it down. But we did manage to do a bit of work last week. No less than three albums by No Man’s Valley got mentioned, including a few bandcamp codes. We wrote about the awesome new Warpstormer, the brilliant Cosmic Fall and went back to the final days of December 2023 to mention Engraver’s debut release called Rituals. And then there was the FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for Deep Valley Blues new album Sangue E Veleno. And our resident poet Ronny Dijksterhuis graced us with a few words about Bog Filth and an actual, wonderful poem about that album. And yesterday, before we crawled back in bed, we put up the first official announcement that this year’s Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2024 will commence on Saturday 14th of December. And that you crazies can send your list to stonerhive@hotmail.com before 8.00 CET on that day… Well, we did do some work after all last week. Let’s hope for a few moments of clarity and a speedy recovery this week… And as usual, the Spotify playlist for the Top 10 Most Listened Last week can be heard below… Have a great week everyone! Stay healthy!

Mornin! Yes, it’s Tuesday now. But you know what happened. The Doom Charts for September went live on Friday and then we scooted off to the North of the Netherlands for an Into The Void Festival that will go down in history as one of the best! And then when Monday morning came around we were still reeling from all those magnificent shows and trying to make sure other rent paying work got done. Just like we will have to make sure to get some HiVe work done this week! It will happen. Last week, we only put up those words about the new Ruff Majik, posted the wild single for Underdogs featuring Nick Oliveri and premiered that kick ass Ghost Frog video. This week will see a bit more action. If everything works out. And we always hope it does! Check out the Top 10 and just like last week, there’s a handy Spotify Playlist if you use that.. If not, Bandcamp links are just a click away!

Sub Pop Records – 2024

Rated: ****

We never actually wrote something about their Ummon album. Even though it was one of our absolute favorite albums from 2020. It came in on Number 9 of that years Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown, according to all your votes. We had it listed in our Top 10 back then, but listened to it so much afterwards, we should have put it in our Top 3. What’s even better, we got to see Slift live quite a few times afterwards, and they always managed to amaze. And their Sonic Whip 2023 show also immediately made Slift an absolute favorite for my wife. So ,when the Ilion promo arrived, it naturally immediately jumped ahead in the gigantic queue of amazing albums we need to listen to. Ilion is no UmmonIlion is much wilder, rougher and more disturbing. With almost white-out droning noise moments, contrasting those prog rock turning into kraut instances and vocals that might haunt your dreams. A new week awaits! Still recovering from a little jaw surgery unfortunately, but this week everything should be on the upside. Decided to leave out the two albums I had to listen to for interview purposes. Cause Scott Stapp and Novastar have very little to do with the Heavy Underground and that’s what Stoner HiVe is all about! The Heavy Underground and all that majestic music floating around. Like that anthemic punk from Angel Face or the new album by the stonerhardcore kings Bokassa! And there’s so much more. Let’s hope I find the time to shine some light on a few others this week! Have a great one and keep it groovy!

We’re back from Austria and will soon be ready for action again… Only have to sift through about 300 emails on the Stoner HiVe account and a similar amount for the Doom Charts… Had a great snowboarding trip and listened to loads of Doom Charts Top 100 albums of 2023 over there, what a year it was, what quality! Let’s hope 2024 will bring a few as tasty as 2023 did! The list above is actually from the week before… And you know what time it is this Friday right? The first Friday of the new month, the Regular January Edition of the Doom Charts… All of you ready for it?

Number 9

Number 9

As we move towards the zero digit placings and leave behind All Them Witches on Number 10 we jump another seventy-three points. On Number 9 we find an album that implores hefty stoner riffs, cumbersome doom influences, a whole universe filled with space rock and all that lovely kraut to color their own style intense heavy prog. And there is that jazzy side; which is so much in debt to the drummer and propels the band evermore forward and always to greater heights. Turning all into one king hell of an electric kool-aid acid trip! There are distant echoes and reveries, celestial choirs illuminating space. Ancestral voices and ancient extraterrestrial rites. Abyssal doom and apocalyptic noise. There's chaos. And there's silence. There’s a pull, a push, a change, a swing and a shift! On Number 9 we find:

Stoner HiVe’s Top 5 Most Listened To Albums Last Week…

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 5 Most Listened To Albums Last Week…

Sometimes we have a few minutes left before heading out the door to do a sort of telegram style, tam tam, smoke signals view of that Top 5 Most Listened To Albums list of the Last Week. And today is such a day! A good start of the week after a great weekend; that started with the Sense Of Gravity album release by An Evening With Knives in de Effenaar. The trio rocked the house and showed once again the amazing amount of progress the three have gone through. Good to begin with back when they started back around 2014; but now damn freaking great! A must see band; should they come around to your neighborhood! But before that start of the weekend Mandala Of Fear by Huntsmen got the most spins by far. Out on Prosthetic Records the record boasts 13 metal tracks that all maneuver expertly between stoner, doom and sludge. But what’s sets these guy apart is their use of Americana influences, intense atmospheric elements and all the maximum diversity you can need! One king hell of a record! The new self-titled Brant Bjork album is much needed return to form! To his old form even! Cause we loved the reissue of Jalamanta, but couldn’t do much with Jacoozzi. Out on Heavy Psych Sounds this is the sound we love from Brant! And with all the re-releases of earlier albums to come; it’s gonna be one kick ass Brant year! We’ve been seeing new Oliveri releases the past few months. Fuck It! Pretty decent. Shooters Bible, new versions of Hell Comes To Your Heart songs, not really necessary? And then there’s N.O. Hits At All Vol.666; a new compilation of tracks the man participated with. All out on Heavy Psych Sounds, and all needed for the collection if you love that bald freak as much as we do! And how about that Ummon album by Slift? Out on Stolen Body Records it seems to possess the perfect combination of heavy psychedelic rock with kraut and space elements. And then it just continues to conquer more cosmic territory, crossing into all sorts of genres just to get a foothold in. Amazing album from start to finish! And we’ve listened to an amazing albums more but the one holding the lantern at Number 5 is Galactic Tyrannosaur and their Voyager album. Doom metal from Kentucky that shines a light on a different side of the cosmic side, the cosmic noise! Instrumental, atmospheric, sludgy, doomy and one hell of an adventure! We’ll keep spinning all these a lot! This, week, next week and the for the rest of time!

Check’m out! Check’m all out!
