Number 8

Number 8

Happy Holidays everyone! The Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2018 continues on today with Number 8. Yesterday we saw Uncle Acid and The Deadbeats and their Wasteland album ended up on Number 9 and we saw that it was good. But now we do a big jump. And most of the jumps after this one remain bigger ones. Cause it’s almost twenty points we cross to reach the following position. An album that was released in the beginning of the year. January fifth actually and it immediately grabbed everyone’s attention and imagination. They rode high on the Doom Charts and Madman Tony Maim wrote about them for the HiVe : “the four-piece group from Warsaw conjure dreamy psychedelic soundscapes and melodic fuzzed out riffs into a blissful, swirling haze.  And for once, the over used term “psychedelic” really applies here. This is a trip into a sonic landscape that made me forget the outside world and found me immersed on the journey that the crazies were taking me. Heavy when it needs to be, the riffs are natural and unforced and with great song compositions, the different tones and colors used really gel into a stunning album.” A stunning album indeed. So here’s Number 8 !

Weedpecker – III

Weedpecker – III
Stickman Records - 2018
Stoner, Psychedelic Rock, Heavy Rock
Rated: ****

The Polish trippin’ stoners start off 2018 with an impressive release. On III, the four-piece group from Warsaw conjure dreamy psychedelic soundscapes and melodic fuzzed out riffs into a blissful, swirling haze.  And for once, the over used term “psychedelic” really applies here. This is a trip into a sonic landscape that made me forget the outside world and found me immersed on the journey that Weedpecker were taking me. Heavy when it needs to be, the riffs are natural and unforced and with great song compositions, the different tones and colours used really gel into a stunning album. Not since “A Storm In Heaven” by The Verve have I been transported to a place where I can escape to for 45 mins...

Weedpecker – Weedpecker

Weedpecker – Weedpecker
Self released – 2013
Rock, Stoner, Psych, Grunge
Rated: ****

After releasing the Berenja Pipe / Mindbreath single earlier this year as a teaser for the upcoming album the Polish Weedpecker convinces even more on their full-sized self-titled release. As honorable Matt already explained on said review, the band excels in thick riffs, psychedelic leads and gruff grunge tinted vocals that are among the tastiest in its color scheme available at the moment. But the band amazes even more on their instrumental efforts Don’t Trust Your Elephant and Kraken. They infuse some space and post rock into their heavy stoner metal on those tracks and turn water into wine. After which the heady Sativa Landscapes makes you dream out that alcohol cursing through your veins and leave you hypnotized and even the weird Cheesy Dude and his trek through the Weedfields seems unable to wake you from your intense hallucinations… In fact, he makes your delerium even grander!

Weedpecker – Berenja Pipe / Mindbreath

Weedpecker – Berenja Pipe / Mindbreath single
Self released – 2013
Stoner, Psych, Grunge
Rated: ***

As new and fresh as the latest baggie of Hindu Kush, Polands Weedpecker play a heady mix of stoner rock, psychedelic, and grunge and they’ve decided to whet our beaks with two singles off their forthcoming debut album.  “Berenja Pipe” locks in with a plodding, thick-as-molasses riff that serves as a launching pad for some fun psychedelic lead work and gruff, shouted vocals a la 90s grunge (think Gonga). Occasionally Weedpecker go into some vocal harmonizing that’s pretty uncommon in the Stonerscape and works well. The next and last track “Mindbreath” picks up the pace with a snarling main riff and liberal use of the vocal harmonies mentioned earlier. We should certainly be looking forward to the full-length and so should you if you dig bands like Acrimony, Iota, Black Heat Shujaa….

Side Note: The artwork –a naked babe smoking a spliff  and chilling in a field of pot- is wicked but I can’t figure out what that thing she’s leaning up on is… Some  strange combination of bony, human limbs, feathers and what appears to be a bird skull?? Please assist me in the comments!
