Spellbook – Deadly Charms

Spellbook – Deadly Charms
Self released – 2022
Rock, Hard, Stoner, Seventies, Occult, Proto
Rated: ***

Formerly known as Witch Hazel, the five from York, Pennsylvania in the USA now rock out under the name Spellbook. And on their newest release Deadly Charms they run the gamut of every proto, vintage, occult and heavy rock ‘n roll genre you can think off. The album starts off with giving every Sabbath loving freak out there everything they could ever need. A riveting and slightly ominous intro, galloping riffs in that second track Rehmeyer’s Hollow and a vocalist that has a certain pitch and manic energy that borders that of our lord Ozzy. During the course of the new Spellbook album the tracks move more towards something with pop-sensible catchiness. Just check out  any of the tracks  and their highly poppy and addictive chorus. It’s extremely audible that the five had fun coming up with those delightful touches and musical trinkets to make all that classic rock ‘n roll compelling and exciting; but without never losing touch of that vintage groove and the ageless sound of bloodlust occult; charming! Deadly Charming… Deadly Charms!

The September Doom Charts went live two days ago; and since then we’ve been listening to all forty of them in a row, any moment we have. We’ve just started our playthrough of Number 25, Path Of 1000 Suns by Umbilicus. “Well, in Greece we have a saying that roses spring from thorns, and the brilliant debut of Umbilicus is testament of that. Tasty 1970s-infused prog rock with an excellent sense of melody and a sweet sound that flows like warm whiskey down a weary traveller’s throat. The band’s influences range all the way from Hendrix and Kravitz, to early Deep Purple and some touches of Skid Row.Ioannis Valiakos from Desert Vulture stated. So, we’re sure to start scoot boogying over here!  September was a great month for music once again; and looking at the releases for October and November; things are going to get hot and heavy once again! Enjoy your week! And keep listening to all that heavy stuff out there!
