Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

What’s this then? A Quick Fire Friday round? We haven’t done one of those since somewhere around March when that Icelandic volcano first erupted. Since then we’ve had volcanic activity around the globe but no Quick Fire Friday… Even though… We know… It burns hot like molten lava! Ho ho ho! And we know, we know, the albums and bands deserve more than the few words we will jot down here. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! Let all that’s good and heavy burn you!

Panic Population – Panic Population

It’s a new project by Idlewar founding member Pete Pagonis, and we like Idlewar and we like Pete and we perhaps should have mentioned it sooner, cause the alt-rock vein exposed here demands our attention and our needle. So go shoot up and experience this psychedelic garage rocking panic!

The Dry Mouths – More Oo No Fluid

A new single by The Dry Mouths you say? Why yes please! Slater me up with that stuff and let it sit there for an incredibly long time, just listening to More Oo No Fluid on repeat. And hey, did you say there’s also a wicked video accompanying this track? There is. Go check that out here on this thing called Youtube. And as always, you can listen to the instrumental dreamy desert haze that it The Dry Mouths on bandcamp. Sweet!

Fliptop Box – Final Scene

Formed around 2003 somewhere in Athens, it’s Fliptop Box! (Say that twenty times fast!) And the new album of this grungy quartet is called Final Scene. Eight tracks that meander through the alternative rock and metal styles, with grooves a plenty and riffs galore! And hey, they’re from Greece… Did I ever tell you about the time I discovered the Mastiha drink for the first time?

Fairyport Convent – Fly United

We can’t keep track man! Fairyport Convent is a one man project and it has been releasing a steady stream of EP’s per month. Sometimes even two a month. Insanity is waiting just around the corner, together with the one-armed man and that guy with his tambourine, which isn’t the same guy, cause a one-armed man can’t light a cigarette and play the tambourine at the same time… Or can he?

Hope Hole – Death Can Change

“Once upon a time there was hope. Until we threw it all down that hole over there. Come closer. Lie down in the dirt. Hang your head over the edge of the abyss. Do you hear that? It calls. What sweet music they make. Hope Hole is Matt Snyder and Mike Mullholand. We take our inspiration from the uninspired, the enlightened who know there's no escape. No one here gets out...” There you have folks! Hook, line and sinker! They’ve got us, with their gothic psych and dark rock. Doom noir anyone?

Prehistoric Pigs – The Fourth Moon

And we end this Quick Fire Friday segment with a bona fide firecracker! Six track release The Fourth Moon by Italian trio Prehistoric Pigs. Out November 26th through Go Down Records the Italians are still intense and heavy zealots.  It’s got atavistic stoner, ancestral sludge and derelict doom for you to bathe in. And just like bathing in a certain moonlight will turn some of us feral, this one will turn everyone wild and crazy! Go check it out! Check'm all out!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Over here there is a rush of fever! Ice skating fever. The Dutch go crazy when there are a few days of freezing weather. So the past two days the most of the Netherlands, myself included, have been doing the rounds on the various fens, lakes, streams and canals. And there is two more days of fun to be had, after which the thaw will commence. But hey, it is Friday. And we do have a little respite from the cold to warm ourself with some Quick Fire Friday action! So here it comes! And we know, we know, the albums and bands deserve more than the few words we will jot down here. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And its burns hot like molten lava!

The Dry Mouths – T3Ch N3Rd5

We’ve been digging the shit out of Almeria, Spain three-piece The Dry Mouths even since getting to know them as a quartet back around 2012. New single T3Ch N3Rd5 is hopefully a promise of a new complete album soon. Cause the band rocks and so does this new track! The groove and the flow, the languid sunset approach to all that heaviness we all love so dearly. Gonna be having this one on repeat when we start skating at sunrise tomorrow…

Neofelis Nebulosa – EP1

French post grunge outfit Neofelis Nebulosa infuses elements of stoner, alternative rock and post punk into the sound displayed on the three track EP1. Three tracks that encourages people to break all chains in order not to risk living in a world of loneliness and depression. It definitely has a drive and will definitely spur you into action!

Spaceweed – Sorry We’re Stoned

What’s in a name right? Both the demo EP and the bandname leave little to the imagination. Some might be deterred from checking it out. But the lo-fi, grubby and lo-down sound of Spaceweed might actually get you high. Slow burning instrumental sludgy doom and stoner metal that definitely sounds like the stuff they named their duo project after: “We're named after some outta this world shit my buddy found in his dad's desk back in high school.” Well, let’s ask his dad for more?!

Jorogumo – Rot

Five-piece sludgy death metal outfit from the dirty streets of Glasgow called Jorogumo released their debut EP Rot just a week or so ago. Five tracks that take another approach to doom; using it to spice up their old school death metal sound and the hardcore elements they definitely use to their advantage. Powerful and definitely bordering on the extreme; but never crossing that line. Awesome!

Stay To Sleep – Puppet

And to end this Quick Fire Friday segment more quietly and dreamy we give you another Almeria, Spain outfit called Stay To Sleep and their single Puppet. Their rock definitely has some ambient and shoegaze elements and is highly atmospheric. Spacegaze and dreamrock they call it themselves and that definitely fits this track. Can’t wait to hear what the rest of the upcoming Blow A Wish album will sound like!

The Dry Mouths – And Show Us

The Dry Mouths – And Show Us
Aneurisma Records – 2013
Rock, Stoner, Grunge, Alternative
Rated: ****

Our Spanish friends from The Dry Mouths have delivered yet another superb album. Going from a foursome to a trio will always influence the music. But in this case it has only been beneficiary. For where their second album Moons True Delay Length Wah Foo Era seemed to be teeming with possibilities without ever truly exploring them. Their third album And Show Us seems more steadfast and ready to go do the actual ground work. They delve headfirst into the alternative rock and grunge of the nineties and spice it up with some stoner influences and intense breaks. But it never becomes too much, it shows maturity and shows they have become masters in choice. They explore and experiment but now also have the keen observation to go the simple route when necessary.  And then there’s Dawn Of The Star. Which takes everything done before to a completely different level. Aiming for prog and post and the outer reaches of the universe…

The Dry Mouths – Moons True Delay Length Wah Foo Era

The Dry Mouths – Moons True Delay Length Wah Foo Era
Self released – 2012
Rock, Alternative, Grunge, Metal, Post
Rated: ***

Four friends from the Spanish town of Almeria founded The Dry Mouths in the year of our lord 2006. In 2010 they released their debut effort called Lost Bow Case Eckard and 2012 saw the release of their sophomore album weirdly entitled: Moons True Delay Length Wah Foo Era. The album starts with a full throttle guitar assault that recalls the nineties alternative rock glory with a metal twist. This quickly dissipates into something more melodic yet obscurely structured; with intelligent turns and technical breaks. Slowly but surely the album starts to make its mark and leaves you breathless in the sheer possibilities these four guys tick off; without ever delving in too deep. It leaves you with a broad horizon of alternative rock and experimental metal that shakes the intestines. On some moments it sounds like a grungier and simpler version of Tool and on others they come across as a heavier and paradoxically melodic Seattle born formation. We can’t wait to hear their third record set to be released later this year!
