KrashKarma on tour!

KrashKarma on tour!

Later this year, the KrashKarma two will return to Europe for a wild two month tour through France, Austria, Spain and hitting almost every city in Germany! But at the end of April and begin of May they will do a mini tour through Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. And yes, my hometown is among the dates! On the 3rd of May they will be crashing into The Jack in Eindhoven

And wild is an understatement! Two people, somehow sounding like five, hurling drums, riffs and vocal chaos straight into your face, Niki Skistimas soaring one moment, Ralf Dietel growling from the basement the next! It’s a volatile cocktail of modern metal swagger, that combines their powerful drums and energetic guitar with that striking vocal contrast to something that becomes larger than life. Just go back to their last Falling To Pieces album from 2023 and hear the proof that a duo can sound incredibly massive and keep listeners curious for more and for how they sound live on stage. Unbelievably loud, dynamic, unpredictable, explosive and weirdly addictive! Yes, very curious how they deliver it all on stage! May 3rdThe Jack, Eindhoven

Live music!

Anker Studio presents: Komatsu + Patserbak + Nevels

Saturday, March 7th!

There’s this wild little studio in my hometown Eindhoven called Anker Studio. They organize this yearly festival which is all about the Heavy Underground. But every so often, they decide to host another party! Another wild weekend full of hometown heavy rock! Saw Nevels only a few weeks ago as they opened for Der Mancha Red and was pleasantly surprised by their highly atmospheric heaviness. And we all know and love Komatsu, these mothersludgers have relentlessly delivered amazing album after amazing album, culminating in last years A Breakfast For Champions. And Patserbak is another few years old Eindhoven band featuring former members from Komatsu, Kaligoh, Gifkip and GodsChosenDealer. Sludge, punk, doom, stoner. It has everything! And so does Anker Studio, three amazing bands served on one hot night!

Hermano – Clisson, France (Live album)

Hermano – Clisson, France (Live album)
Ripple Music – 2026
Rock, Stoner, Desert
Rated: ****

Legendary Hermano. Back on the road. I always counted myself lucky to have been there for their first incarnation. The W2 gig that was recorded and later on when they returned to my hometown Eindhoven, where they had the very cool but short-lived Repomen (which thankfully gave us Komatsu) open up for them. And this year… I’m gonna be freaking lucky once again. I will definitely see them twice once more. And can’t wait for May to arrive. I wasn’t there in France though. Not last year. And not back in 2016 when they recorded the live album that has been spinning a lot over here. Hellfest, they sure got something special going on. And so does Hermano

They obviously need no introduction. And to be perfectly frank, the live album needs no review. This stands as a testament for those who were there at Hellfest, for those who’ve seen them live somewhere and for those who desperately want to see them live. And will be able to at any of the nine dates currently lined-up in Europe. Quality wise the sound is there, visceral, engaging and seducing. It will make you lust for more Hermano…

And if When The Moon Was High mini album had not been released back in 2024, this new live album would have been so much more. Remember that one? With Breathe? And Never Boulevard? But three of the tracks were also used for that release. One of them being Love. That one ‘new’ track. Which hold such a savory groove and tempo you can have it on repeat for the entire afternoon. But that would probably dismiss a bit too much of the rest of the live album, for the setlist was pristine and the band on fire.

No Sugarhill Gang at all, this is the Hermano you hope to hear. Always. So… If you were there. At this Hermano live gig, some other one or desperately want to be there, this is for you. This is a release for you. They’ve played that gig and recorded it, just for you.

Pink Floyd – Pink Floyd At Pompeii - MCMLXXII

Pink Floyd – Pink Floyd At Pompeii - MCMLXXII
Sony / Legacy – 2025
Rock, Prog, Psych
Rated: *****

I was there. At Pompeii. Not at the Pink Floyd filming back in 1971 unfortunately. No I was there a bit more than a month ago. Dream Theater played there. Not a month ago unfortunately. But a few weeks. I wish I could have been there as well. But as I strolled across the ruins for a few hours with a blistering sun above me, scorching the sand underneath my feet and slowly making me step forward into an ever more strangely dreamy condition, I entered the arena where it all happened. The Pompeii Amphitheatre that was home to one of the greatest moments in the history of live music. And perhaps a pivotal moment for Pink Floyd. Two tunnels from the Pompeii Amphitheatre are dedicated to this concert, with reels from the movie playing over and over and many pictures, quotes and stories. It’s wonderful, but it would have been even better to be able to sit down in the Amphitheatre, exchange the audio guide for decent headphones and high quality music and listen to the entire record on site, while the sun slowly sets. A unique environment, which was recognized instantly by Pink Floyd and the director Adrian Maben. The film therefor glances at Pompeii city, wandering through the streets, showing glimpses of its splendor and beautiful murals. Even as night falls and Pink Floyd plays on, the shadows of its past come to life…

Fans of Pink Floyd all have their own favorite album and there are many to choose from. All of them have their merits and many are landmarks. But recognized universally as one of the best albums ever made is of course The Dark Side Of The Moon. No longer present Syd Barrett, still there Roger Waters. But of course, Live At Pompeii was right before that album. Recorded in 1971 it has some of their best songs from the previous period. And here, as they play live and are whisked away by the shadows and move through time and space, those songs become even better. No extra musicians, no background singers, no extra layers, just the four that are Pink Floyd. Young dogs, still under thirty, playing on the very edge of the needle, and becoming all they could be. Eagerly and with an urge to do justice to their surroundings the four lift songs like Echoes, Set Controls For The Heart Of The Sun and Careful With That Axe, Eugene into a higher dimension. Bulbous and brimming with an energy that almost bursts out of every riff and fill, exploding like the volcano behind them. And that makes Pink Floyd At Pompeii a legendary album and film…

But there’s more. Even though the studio snippets, the dark atmosphere, the breakfast chatter and the lighthearted talk takes some of the energy out of that performance video. It does have its merits, for it shows them working on that legendary album, prophesizing that ‘they could become slaves to their equipment’ and the start of their ‘electronic goodies’ dependency. It also shows a Pink Floyd, already a big band, still not aware themselves of that they are about to become one of the biggest bands to ever have walked the face of the earth. That given can make the viewer giddy and smiling uncontrollably through every part of the chatter. The best thing however about this new MCMLXXII edition is the extra’s, the mix and the fact they took out those horrible space images that were there in earlier editions. This is done right. This is done the way it should be. And we can thank Steven Wilson for restoring the entire sound to its rightful proportions. Huge, mountainous, yet with so much room for the individual instruments to breathe, it makes every second of this version sound like a lifetime. And there are some hundred and fifty more of those seconds on the final unedited version of A Saucerful of Secrets

This is a restoration filled with love and time, Lana Topham for devoting every waking moment for years to restore the original version of the film and Steven Wilson for mixing this stream of music into the beautiful obsidian it was always destined to be. And to add that alternate take of Careful With That Axe, Eugene as a final gift is another testament to the love and energy that went into this thing. The music is stunning, the mix brilliant… But it is even more beautiful to see a band out of time, out of space and on the very of exploding…

Doūsk - 5

Doūsk - 5

The live album will come out on Riff Dealers somewhere around May, and judging from this first track called 5, it is something wild, wonderful and to behold in wondrous anticipation! Doūsk is an instrumental duo that turns their stoner and doom into a sludge toned, kraut rocking, groove riddled, highly atmospheric and trance inducing entity. One that will make you feel like a whirling dervish dancing through a wormhole in space and time. This is brilliant!

Travo live on KEXP

Travo live on KEXP

We’ve been blessed with the opportunity to premiere their Turn To The Sun single and we’ve been even more fortunate to have had the pleasure of experiencing this Portogese quartet live! We’re talking about Travo and we still spin their lateste Astromorph God album as much as we possibly can. Cause it’s a wild ride every time again! And it helps us remember that Sonic Whip gig and prepare for the new Sonic Whip Festival, happening on May 16th & 17th. And now… We have the choice to listen to them live and direct, cause they’ve put their live gig from l’Antipode in Rennes, France, during Trans Musicales 2024 up on KEXP! Opening the set with a brand new track called Sleeper, it’s a showcase extraordinaire for what Travo is! And yes, Sleeper is stunning and Sleeper might just hint at a new Travo album soon to come!

PR Wire:

TRAVO live on KEXP

Until now, Travo was Portugal's best-kept secret. But then, what has changed? Well, a series of coincidences, more or less intentional, have led to the prestigious US radio station KEXP dropping on Friday last week the spectacular live session the band recorded a few months ago. Travo is no longer just a rumor among the in-the-know; it's a reality that, with just one click of play, will blow your mind. Don't say we didn't warn you!

We're incredibly excited to share with you that our live session for KEXP is finally here. We had an amazing time and felt right at home. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

WATCH TRAVO LIVE ON KEXP

Hailing from the Portuguese city of Braga nearly a decade ago, the band, formed by Gonçalo Ferreira (guitar, vocals), Gonçalo Carneiro (guitar, synth), David Ferreira (bass) y Nuno Gonçalves (drum), began gaining recognition in the local indie scene with the release of their studio albums 'Ano Luz' in 2019 and 'Sinking Creation' in 2022. However, it wasn't until the release of 'Astromorph God' in 2023 through gig.ROCKS! and Spinda Records that their name began to be mentioned in the editorial offices of international media publications and booking agencies of some of the most respected European festivals when it comes to psychedelia, stoner and progressive rock.

The band was selected to participate in the FOCUS Wales music fair and the Dutch festival Sonic Whip in May 2024. To make this happen, both gig.ROCKS! and La Novena Escena organized an entire European tour around these dates. This would lead them to present their music in countries such as Spain, France, Belgium, Portugal and, of course, the already mentioned Wales and the Netherlands. What was initially going to be a small concert for industry professionals at FOCUS Wales ended up giving them opportunity to perform for, among others, the organizer of the legendary French festival Trans Musicales, who quickly after the show invited them to participate in its next edition in December 2024.

And it was there, within the framework of the French festival, that Travo had the chance to record a live session for the influencial KEXP, which is now available on the Seattle station's YouTube channel.

WATCH TRAVO LIVE ON KEXP

For this special occasion, Travo chose to perform the songs "Faceless Ghoul", "Arrow of Motion" and "Turn to the Sun" from their recent album 'Astromorph God', as well as a new track titled "Sleeper", which will presumably be part of their upcoming studio album. Just for songs are enough for the Portuguese band to make it clear the intensity and fire of their live performances, which come packed with heavy psych, progressive rock and garage attitude, blurring the lines between reality and collective ecstasy.

Worldwide Singles Premiere – Maragda

Worldwide Singles Premiere – Maragda

We’re honored to present to you the Worldwide Premiere for two singles by Spanish progrockers Maragda! We loved their The Reckless / Evil Seed single and we adored their self-titled album from 2021, so we could not be happier to present to you the two brand new singles! And not just those two singles; we also get to premiere a live session! That’s right, Maragda is on fire and is releasing two tracks called Skirmish and My Only Link. AND, a twenty minutes long live session, featuring those singles and the earlier released title track Tyrants. Besides those three tracks there will also be a five minute long interview at the end of the video. Out on May 8th through Spinda Records the Barcelona three have woven another brilliant tapestry of prog, psych, garage and kraut elements. It will once again enchant the listener and take them on a journey through the fantasy universe created by Maragda!

So, in conjunction with MoreFuzz, Outlaws Of The Sun, RockZoneMag and Doomed Nation we give you Skirmish and My Only Link and the Siete Barbas Studio LIVE session!

Skirmish and My Only Link:

Siete Barbas Studio LIVE session:

From the PR Wire:

"SKIRMISH" + "MY ONLY LINK" IS THE NEW DOUBLE SINGLE BY PSYCH ROCKERS MARAGDA

The second album by the Barcelona-based band Maragda will be titled 'Tyrants' and will be released on May 8, 2024, via Spinda Records - pre-orders are now available. After teasing the title track last month, today they unveil a double single comprising the songs "Skirmish" and "My only link", presenting them in both studio and live versions, with the latter extracted from the live session they recently recorded at Siete Barbas Estudios. Melodies, atmospheres, compositions of great complexity, and a garage attitude are the main components of 'Tyrants'.

This way, Maragda continues to unveil this highly anticipated album, which serves as a follow-up to their successful self-titled debut album (2021, Spinda Records) and the live EP "The Reckless / Evil Seed" (2022, Spinda Records). In this new musical journey, the band immerses listeners in introspective themes ranging from self-imposed limitations to the fight for values, love, hope, and farewells. All of this unfolds in a hypothetical fantasy universe, where psychedelia and progressive rock continuously merge, adding nuances of other styles like garage.

For the creation of the album "Tyrants", Maragda embarked on a creative journey that took them to the Big Snuff Studios in Berlin, where they collaborated with studio engineer Richard Behrens, renowned for his work with bands like Kadavar and Elder. Subsequently, the mastering was handled by acclaimed engineer Peter Deimel (known for his work with bands like Motorpsycho) at the Black Box Studios in France, solidifying a successful collaboration that began with their debut album.

In the visual department, the band has once again partnered with Error! Design studio (known for works with Explosions In The Sky, Russian Circles, Mastodon) for the album's graphic design, ensuring a cohesive and captivating aesthetic experience for their followers.

1. Tyrants
2. Skirmish
3. Endless
4. My only link
5. Sunset room
6. The singing mountain

DesertFest NYC 2023

DesertFest NYC 2023

We sure as hell wished we had been there. DesertFest NYC… Seeing all those amazing bands. Catching up with my Doom Charts brothers, Scott Spiers from CleanAndSoberStoner, Remi VL - the Tallymaster and our very own Kyle SB / Shastabeast. We would have befriended a load of others there as well, cause we are all Heavy Underground loving brothers, and we would surely have become best friends with Josh Burke. Friend of Remi and Kyle, he has graced us with a review of the festival. Our very first guest writer, and yes, we would surely let him write about DesertFest NYC again… Or anything else for that matter… Great to meet you Josh

DesertFest NYC 2023

by Josh Burke

After some encouragement from a member of the Doom Charts, as well as Stoner HiVe contributor Kyle SB / Shasta Beast, I decided to attempt an actual write-up of the festival we all attended last weekend. Although I write a ton for my job, I don’t think of myself as a writer. As someone who tends to sum up experiences as “that was awesome”, “that was okay” or “that sucked” I have a lot of respect for people who can write a coherent and well-written review. So, anyhow, Desertfest NY 2023 was okay.

Colour Haze won the weekend.  Despite their 30-year history, they had apparently only played once in the States previously. What a special treat to have their unique brand of jazzy, psychedelic rock. Both nights were great; the band made both the intimacy of the St. Vitus bar and the grander setting of the main stage work for them. Either set would have topped my list, but I give the edge to Friday night on the main stage. It is really easy for largely instrumental and generally mellow music to be boring and self-indulgent. Colour Haze dodged both of those traps. Building up and then backing down, occasionally going all out, everything worked. Every solo mattered and added to the performance. I went into the weekend as a casual fan of this band, only owning a couple of records, and came away just stunned by how great they were, particularly drummer Manfred Merwald. I only wish they’d had merch!

A hugely surprising second place to me goes to Ecstatic Vision from Philadelphia. Interestingly, another band that traffics heavily in long, drawn-out jams with extensive soloing. In this case, all that excess is done in the service of having the funnest party you can have. The clear exuberance and joy on the faces of lead singer/guitarist Doug Sabolik and saxophonist/guitarist/flautist Kevin Nickles was infectious. Particularly, the latter had a smile on his face for every nanosecond of their set. Meanwhile, the bass player and the drummer were there to do their job, and they toiled non-stop with a constant groove that was impossible to resist. Add in forays into the crowd and into the ceiling and a guest appearance by an equally driven Nick Oliveri and it was pretty much perfection. While they had not really grabbed me on first listen, this is a band I will always go see live if I have the chance.

Djunah were equally amazing in a very different way. Donna Dianne is a force of nature. The title of their most recent (and amazing) album, Femina Furens, is Latin for “furious woman,” and Dianne has fury for days. Flailing wildly at her guitar while pouring her soul into the mic and tapdancing on a raft of pedals, most notably playing complex bass lines on her Roland PK5 synth. Yes. With her feet. Crazy. Djunah’s music defies any easy categorization. Songs alternate between angular guitar lines and heavy riffs, all accompanied by Dianne’s biting lyrics and powerful vocals that range from whispers to yells to howls of anguish.  At times Dianne seemed almost overwhelmed and the overall mood was one of increasing tension and discomfort. A missed note here and there is easy to forgive and almost an afterthought with all the emotion Dianne puts into her performance and the anthemic Seven Winds of Sekhmet was the perfect release to close their set.

Other standouts:

Lo Pan – one of the most melodic voices in all of stoner rock, plus pummeling bass grooves.

Upper Wilds – this year’s surprise for me. Perhaps the least “desert” of the bunch, but melodic, upbeat space pop more in the vein of Dinosaur Jr. “Space” being apt here, as singer/guitarist Dan Friel told us after their set that each album draws inspiration from a particular planet (Jupiter being the latest).

Dorthia Cottrell – her acoustic set mixed some of the songs off her new album, the aptly named “Death Folk Country,” with reinterpretations of Windhand songs, highlighting her soulful vocals throughout. Second guitar and violin filled out the sound nicely.

Godflesh – I wanted to like this set more than I did. I love this band and it was a solid performance with a good mix of material from across their catalog. Justin Broadrick and B.C. Green were somehow low key while still being considerably more animated than the last time I saw them, but the mix was physically punishing and had the clarity of a passing car with the subwoofer cranked to a thousand. This seemed to be a plus for much of the crowd, but I dipped out early to get a spot up front for Djunah.

Melvins – I am largely indifferent to the Melvins but I’ll be damned if King Buzzo, Steven McDonald and Coady Willis (filling in for the ailing Dale Crover) didn’t win me over. Buzz alone on stage, menacingly picking his way through the end of Boris, was a perfect end to Desertfest NYC 2023.

There were many, many strong sets beyond these, and I definitely had a great time at the fest.  I am slightly bummed at having only two days (plus the pre-party) versus last year’s three, as well as an overall line-up that lacked some heft compared to last year (or to the other Desertfests this year). I can’t imagine how hard it is to put on an event like this, but the curse of putting on a great festival is that people expect it to continue to be great. That’s especially true when so many attendees are paying for a plane ticket and a hotel. There is every reason to think this is just a blip and that next year will once again be impossible to skip. And we’ll see if Stoner HiVe lets me write about it again.
