Elder – Innate Passage

Elder – Innate Passage
Armageddon Shop / Stickman Records – 2022
Rock, Prog, Psych, Stoner
Rated: *****

Stoner HiVe was started in 2009 to count down the best albums of that year, according to the votes that were cast by followers and friends… And ever since the Dead Roots Stirring album from 2011, ELDER has been on it with every release and usually winning the poll. But ELDER has been around even a bit longer. And the band seems to be able to do the sheer unimaginable every time again. And that is to make yet another even more amazing album, when the one that came before was already unbelievably stunning. Innate Passage is their sixth studio album and is an even more progressive work of art compared to what came before. And even though some might question the vocals on this album. To me, founder, guitarist, vocalist and keyboard player Nick DiSalvo feels perfectly what every composition needed and exactly how the vocals should sit in the mix. Which is probably why Samavayo-vocalist Behrang Alavi adds his voice on two of the tracks. And all of this together makes you feel like you are listening to ELDER at its very best. Which is a feeling you will have throughout the record, just take the gorgeous guitar work on Endless Return, the beautiful keys on Coalescence or that majestic fourth track Merged In Dreams – Ne Plus Ultra with its intense tension arc, razorsharp riffs and pirouette interplay between strings and keys. It simply does not get any better than this… Well, at one point in time, ELDER will release a new album…

Kyle SB / Shastabeast’s – Personal Top 20

Kyle SB / Shastabeast’s – Personal Top 20

We had hoped to post Kyle SB / Shastabeast’s - Personal Top 20 yesterday, on January 6… Why you ask? Cause it was his birthday! We congratulated him yesterday, but do so again today! Congratulations Kyle SB! The very best of wishes for the upcoming year and may it be a brilliant one. And we also congratulate him with his personal Top 20 today. And indeed, Kyle SB is also part of the Doom Charts, and he runs the Instagram page of the Doom Charts. And his Personal list will of course also appear on the Doom Charts, but then with little blurbs for each and every entry. But we’re posting it here as just the list. Just because we like to keep things nice and tidy; and up with the tradition…

Number 19

Number 19

We listened to Sleepwulf and Sasquatch on Number 20, but now we move on to Number 19! Where we find no less than three albums. We do jump 27 points from Number 20 to reach Number 19, but we do this to get groovy with three albums all at once. Those final lists that came in on that final day, pushed them all into the same spot. We only mentioned one of these albums this year, although the other two bands did already make the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown during past editions. Both of them with their 2018 release. (Number 10 and Number 12.) This time around, that one release will undoubtedly serve as perfect evidence for their craftmanship as doom metal alchemists. Their skill in combining heavy metal, with sludge and doom will live on forever. Crushing you with their mighty riffs and severing your head with those bludgeoning rhythms, for it seems, there can be only one. The other album shoots among the stars at the opposite spectrum of the heavy universe. Their heavy psychedelic rock goes the way of post rock, atmospheric stoner and infuses tiny elements of metal and doom, but aims forever into the vast emptiness of space, filling it all with mighty guitar work and controlled drums. It will surely help them escape, if only for a moment, all the ugliness going on in their home country. Another band that will point the listener into the direction of a nation at war, of people struggling, is that third band, with their newest album, which we mentioned earlier in the year. On which they bring you two tracks in Farsi, the language of Iran. Two stand out tracks, that will show you that this German based band can do much more than what you might expect from them listening to the more Palm Desert stonerrock inspired opening of their album. I’m sure those one sentence write-ups you just read already made it perfectly obvious which three albums we find on Number 19… But if not, scroll down and see who is who and then go listen to all the great rock once again… On Number 19 we find:

Conan – Evidence Of Immortality

&

Somali Yacht Club – The Space

&

Samavayo – Payan
