The Doom Charts for September 2023

DOOM CHARTS

SEPTEMBER 2023

“The music junkies see the Doom Charts as part of a larger, more essential and pleasurable part of daily life. Not as an experience to be collected or bragged about – or as a ritual, like filling up a car – but as something else that gives pleasure, like sex or dancing, or a good nap in the afternoon.”

~ Anthony Bourdain (probably misheard quote)

And that ends September… We’ve been blessed with so many amazing albums already throughout the year. But September was something else. There was so much, so many albums released that the Contributors were starting to revolt. They demanded longer lists. They wanted to extend the published list. They wanted extra lists. They wanted more. Because they received so much more! Well… After much deliberation within the group, we decided we wouldn’t budge and we would not waver. We only wanted to state that we understand their grief, their toil and sweat. We feel their pain. It was hard selecting the best ones in our opinion. And it was even more difficult to stick to that rigid amount of a mere twenty-five. Below, is the result. Forty brand new albums representing September 2023, a month so full of great releases that the ones featured on this list are really something else…

As usual we highlight the ones on the list we voted for ourselves... But we can't stress enough that we could have voted for them all... Cause it's been one hell of a September! I had hoped a few would have ended up higher or assumed even. And a bit sad that a few of my choices did not even make the Top 40, but this was inevitable... September was one hell of ride! But of the ones that made it, we voted for: Domkraft, Fire Down Below, Dead Feathers, Humulus, Lord Velvet, I Am Low, Omega Sun, Formation Ritual, Stone of Duna, Demons My Friends, Superlynx, Stepmother, Hey Colossus, Rrrags, Fulanno, Nova Doll, Earth Altar / Sun Below and Sonic Speculum.

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

The Doom Charts For July 2022

The Doom Charts For July 2022

“Hell, love costs: it takes effort and work.”
~ William Somerset

Hi everyone. Just wanted to state the obvious once again. I love my fellow Contributors from the Doom Charts. All of them do majestic work for the Doom Charts and more importantly, for the scene! They tirelessly slave on their respective blogs, podcasts and websites. And they do all of that for their undying love and fealty to heavy rock. Much respect! And of course, there’s another part of the heavy underground that we perhaps should pay more homage to. And we shall do that henceforth on the Doom Charts… The record companies! Cause even though many of the bands featured on the Doom Charts do it all themselves. There are a few nutcases out there, that just like the rest of us Doom Charts Contributors, did not know where to go with all that love for heavy rock. And so, they went on and founded a record label to spread their love for the good stuff! Well, thank you! Thank you all! Cause we do love putting the needle to the groove, gazing for hours on end at the artwork on the cover and sniffing that brandnew jewelcase! So, thank you all you heavy rock loving nutcases, thank you for founding your label, finding the albums you loved and wanted to put out on your label and doing all that work! As of now, we shall try and mention those labels… But we must confess, sometimes, it’s not clearly marked on the band’s websites…

Hi everyone, July has come and gone, and once again we have been blessed with a massive amount of great albums. No less than 215 albums received votes… And the forty with the most votes can be perused below… And at the very bottom, we’ve got a Doom Charts Mixtape again… Featuring the chosen tracks by the Contributors that blurbed about a certain album… Go listen and go doom! It’s why we do this!

Those crazy Contributors went all out again... So it's here... The all new July Doom Charts... Featuring once again all those heavy rock albums they all love so dearly...

Personal votes went out to: AAWKS, Voidward, SAMÁN, Wizzo, Trillion Ton Beryllium Ships, Paralyzed, Sons of Arrakis, Lucid Grave, Black Capricorn, MY SLEEPING KARMA - OFFICIAL, Mexicoma, SupaSonic Fuzz, Formation Ritual, BIRTH, Ian Blurton's Future Now, Josiah & OBIAT !

And we’ll listen to the entire list once more starting with Number 40, STÍU NU STÍU in the next couple of days… Before we leave for Krach Am Bach festival in Beelen, Germany…

Formation Ritual – The Shifting Dust

Formation Ritual – The Shifting Dust
Self released – 2022
Rock, Stoner, Metal, Psych, Prog, Doom
Rated: ****

The hombre behind Formation Ritual and its debut album The Shifting Dust is multi-instrumentalist Jason Tapia. Responsible for forming the band, writing the album and delivering guitar, organ, Moog synth, Mellotron and awesome vocals. He asked his friend Jose Perez to help produce this little diamond as well as deliver the drums. And another buddy called Joe Mora, from House Of Broken Promises, is the bass player on duty. Together they produced an album that uses every little aspect of proto metal, classic hardrock and the psychedelic doom of yore. And those influences shall be apparent from the first track on. And opener It Summons You and subsequent second track Coming Of The Tide will charm all you heavy rock loving fiends without any doubt in my mind. It’s third track Second Rate Gods though, that will set both the band and the listeners on a different plain altogether. It reveals that Mr. Tapia feels in every fiber of every one of his bones that he is a storyteller and needs to get his visions out. Second Rate Gods starts out a like a slow cowboy song to accompany one as he and his trusty horse treks across the prairie, onwards, towards a battle with a magical gunslinger or indeed a Second Rate God. Shifting color later in the track only helps paint a darker blood red sky. It feels like a hymn for a barbarously and apocalyptic mythology we are still unaware of. And longing to know more about… But Formation Ritual simply continues after that awesome track going ever more into that vintage, full of rust colors, the blues of the olden days and the classic rock. And every one of those tracks that follow is heavy and heavy is good! Even sixth track Oleander, which implores a bit more folk and space influences, will tune you in and turn you on! Oleander will often feel like a that magic hour at sunrise, when those first rays summon daybreak and slowly draws the curtains on the other dimensions once again more… Formation Ritual might have been formed due to the pandemic, the lockdown that followed and Tapia’s other band throwing in the towel; but if The Shifting Dust is the result… Well, we might just need to have ourselves another lockdown…
