Morning! This should have gone up yesterday of course. But you know how it is coming back after a festival. Getting grounded again, takes a bit of time. Freak Valley 2024 was awesome and even though I wasn’t there in any working capacity, pure to party my ass off, I might jot down a few words anyway. And due to be out of bounce for the better part of the week last week, there was only that damn fine write up by Stevie Reek about the amazing new Djiin album Mirrors! Which you should be checking out immediately if you haven’t already… Just like the list above!

Djiin – Mirrors

Djiin – Mirrors
Klonosphere / Season of Mist – 2024
Progressive, Psychedelic, Doom
Rated: Stevie does not rate

French Progressive Doomsters Djiin surpass all their previous works with 'Mirrors' :  An epic, transient journey encompassing Progressive, Doom and Post-Metal aesthetics that sees the band at their most inventive and challenging to date! Opening with "Fish", a strident rock-out with a distinct Stoner flavour, sets the tone for the rest of the album. The captivating voice of Chloe Panhaleux is the conduit for the band's hypnotic, progressive musings. Title track "Mirrors" moves through myriad time-twists revolving around guitarist Tom Penaguin's inimitable style, at times reminiscent of Steve Howe. Following along comes "(in the aura of my own) Sadness", which slows the pace to a more intricate almost Avant-Prog bent meandering and beautiful before bursting into a powerful mid-section which again highlights Penaguin's versatility and the tight backing of bassist Charlelie Pailhas and percussionist Allan Guyomard. "Blind" sees the band adopt a darker, more Doomy approach: a brooding slow-burner replete with stop-start rhythmic cadences and brash, abrasive vocals. "Iron Monsters" is the epic closer: A 13-minute excursion into heavy Progressive Rock that acts as a tour-de-force for all of the members to showcase their skill and unity. Overall, "Mirrors" delivers a fresh, modern take on Prog which incorporates different styles and genres with mind-bending ease!

A Monday that feels like a Sunday, thanks to a national holiday and a different kind of morning… An amazing and emotional night with Masters Of Reality and Alain Johannes last Thursday and a great evening filled with four bands yesterday. New Dutch bands Enma and Alternator opening up for Ruff Majik and Monkey3. And all of them delivering the goods! And thanks to my lovely wife, the Ruff Majik four got to crash reasonable comfortable on my living room floor… I hope it was reasonable at least… Just like I believe they weren’t too weirded out by that way too long story we wrote about Ruff Majik, there last album Elektrik Ram, the new single What A Time To Be A Knife, (which they played last night) and their touring life… A quieter week is forthcoming, so perhaps we can get more HiVe work done? We’ll see. But we did mention the new video by Coilguns and Horseburner last week. And ofcourse jotted down some words about the awesome new High Noon Kahuna album and breathtaking new Maragda. Be sure to check those out and be sure to check out the others in the Most Listened Last Week list… They all kick serious ass!

It’s Monday again! The Monday after Sonic Whip, still flying high from that festival. Man, what a ride! From the top of my head, amazing shows by Kadavar, Monolord, Minami Deutsch, Stoned Jesus, Delving, Kanaan, Domkraft, COFFIN, Full Earth, Dhidalah, Mojo & The Kitchen Brothers, Kintsugi Empire and many more! And now we’re preparing for an interview on Wednesday… And the Masters Of Reality concert on Thursday. Followed by Ruff Majik and Monkey3 on Sunday. And then a week or two later Freak Valley happens again. It might just be the best month of May ever! But due to all that and what came before we did not have that much time last week to HiVe. But stil, we did write about the Numbers 40 to 26 on the April Doom Charts, in what we like to call a Stoner Hype post. We also jotted down a few words about Nine Moons and Dätcha Mandala. Not sure what we can do this week. But I know for sure we’re doing another awesome Full Album Premiere again! More on that soon! Enjoy yer week and listen to the good stuff!

Djiin – Meandering Soul

Djiin – Meandering Soul
Nasoni Records / Klonosphere – 2021
Rock, Stoner, Psych, Kraut, Prog
Rated: ****

December is the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown month… But sometimes we do a weekend break… Like today… They hail from Rennes, France and the four of them call themselves Djiin and have just released, a week or two ago, their newest album Meandering Soul. “Meandering Soul is a concept album that presents the story of a tortured mind being and his evil fiends. The listener is going through a trip where he/she will meet many characters and will be surrounded sometimes by dark and frozen landscapes, other times by a hot and mesmerizing desert, or otherwise by oppressing and sensual places. All these elements are sailing on various musical influences.” Founded in 2017 they already convinced the hell out of everyone with their 2019 record The Freak. Well, the four are back and bring forth their very own tincture of heavy rock once again, seventies prog, heavy metal, psychedelic rock and even some kraut all mixed and distilled with some eastern vibes and mysticism. Excellently displayed by the use of the harp and that numinous voice of vocalist Chloé Panhaleux. Highly soulful and yet also dark and creepy or big and lumbering. It has a lot, it has everything and still wants more. Like a Meandering Soul
