Robot God – Onto The Afterlife

Robot God – Onto The Afterlife
Kozmik Artifactz / Black Throne Productions – 2026
Rock, Stoner, Psych, Metal
Rated: ****

I often feel like we’re not doing enough on Stoner HiVe. But I fear we never can, cause there is so much and so much great stuff. I mean, we mentioned the 2022 Worlds Collide album and the Portal Within record from 2024. But before those there were two others and after those two more before this very new Robot God album was released. It’s called Onto The Afterlife and might just be their best to date… Yes… Robot God delivered again! And will do so again and again and even later this year with another album called Curse Of The Driven…

On Onto The AfterlifeRobot God pushes their desert bound cosmic sound into darker and perhaps more emotionally volatile territory. The Sydney three still build their music around sprawling heavy psychedelic journeys, towering groove-laden riffs and vast space rock adjacent atmospheres. But the new album carries with is a dirtier and more confrontational edge. Beneath the hypnotic flow, lies a strain of grime-coated heaviness that feels drawn from doom, sludge, grunge and diesel blues. It gives the record an extra intense edge, a raw physical weight without sacrificing any of its sense of scale.

It’s their ability to balance meditative drift with crushing momentum, moving from slow burning low end hypnosis to explosive climaxes filled with scorched guitar leads, layered effects and trance like repetition that keeps pulling you further in Onto The Afterlife. Say that three times fast. Vocals weave through the haze, they can feel haunted, sometimes introspective, sometimes urgent and always adding emotional gravity to the album’s expansive sound.

Ambient textures and shadowy instrumental passages all broaden the experience further. And it all leads to the conclusion that these five tracks, these forty-one minutes aren’t just a collection of songs, but part of one long single immersive descent. Onto The Afterlife is an album that wants to define the Robot God sound. A sound that went out to explore what lies beyond, and came back carrying fragments of something vast, wild and beautiful. And there is more… More to explore and more to share… For that is… The Curse Of The Driven…

Devil Electric – Tahlia

Devil Electric – Tahlia
Kozmik Artifactz / Black Throne Productions – 2026
Rock, Doom, Psych, Stoner
Rated: ****

Their self-titled 2017 album was still spinning when the amazing Godless record was released in 2021. That occult edge, wired though that vintage sound and all smoothly delivered by heavy riffs and a seductive voice sent sparks up and down my spine. Which seems logical once you know the band is called Devil Electric. And now they’re back, with a new slab of heavy rock worship called Tahlia, out on Kozmik Artifactz and Black Throne Productions and igniting all over the globe…

It’s been five long years, but Devil Electric detonates with Tahlia, a sultry, sexy storm of bluesy stoner-doom. Smoke curls from thick, hypnotic riffs, while Pierina O’Brien’s voice drifts from earthy growl to soaring, spine-tingling heights. Songs strut with playful menace, while others and especially the nine-minute epic “This Hereafter” twist through psychedelic, seductive depths. Each track pulses like a heartbeat… Teasing, swelling, and exploding in an intoxicating journey of desire and doom. Devil Electric sends sparks everywhere as Tahlia whirls around you, it ensnares, seduces, and lingers, leaving you craving the next smoky, thunderous lightning bolt… Tahlia is here, fresh and tastes like all that unholy sweat you can't stop licking…

Mientras Las Abejas Duermen – MLAD

Mientras Las Abejas Duermen – MLAD
Estudio Mazmorra / Kozmik Artifactz – 2026
Rock, Psych, Stoner, Doom, Prog
Rated: *****

In the sun-baked hills of southern Spain, a secret stirs. Hailing from Cadiz, Spain, we’ve been keeping an ear open for everything these three produce ever since we first got wind of their first single El Camino Silencioso. The name alone, Mientras Las Abejas Duermen, has a magical dream like quality. And as you listen, you hear that this trio of wandering alchemists of sound, have crafted a treasure. Their debut album, whispered and howled in Spanish, carried on riffs that feel older than the land itself, whispers of a path your heart has always known. Each song a step along this once hidden path, moving from meditative valley of slow hypnotic grooves, into towering peaks of doom-lade intensity. El Camino Silencioso was but the first map, as the full album now reveals the landscape in its entirety, unfolding through improvisation and collective instinct, riding forward on riffs that feel like hoof falls or watching them crash over forgotten ruins like a storm meant to steer the wayward spirit into the right direction. As if the music knows the way better than any guide ever could. Psychedelic textures shimmer like mirages, progressive turns surprise like sudden clearings in a forest, and the subtle Andalusian air present on all compositions, but even more on the two Cruz interludes and ending Cruz de la Viñuela track, warms every bit of the traveler’s soul. The album feels like mystery turned sound and like a hidden treasure for everyone who dares to follow its path. And as some of you might know, following that path will lead you to your own personal and unique destiny. So fear nothing, even when the music storms and swells, the path of sound is truly alive and it will know the way…

Stoner Hive’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner Hive’s Quick Fire Friday

We defy all them goddamn rules! Don’t do a Quick Fire Friday on the day the new Doom Charts edition goes online… It’s not like that rule is written in stone! But it is written on Stoner HiVe that we want to pay attention to so much great music, but there is too little time to do it all. So we came up with a way to shoot out a quick blurb and hope it will entice you to listen to the single or the entire discography! So here it is… Another Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Mientras Las Abejas Duermen - El Camino Silencioso

It’s the first single for the debut album by the new out from Cádiz, Spain called As The Bees Sleep or in Spanish: Mientras Las Abejas Duermen. Which means there's another reason they fit perfectly on Stoner HiVe. Grin! Especially since the very earthy eight minute long single El Camino Silencioso will have you on the edge of the seat for its truly wonderful and accomplished sound. Shifting from slow, atmospheric passages to heavier moments, this one single promises so much. Let’s all keep an eye out for 2026, when these sleeping bees will buzz fully awake, with vinyl on Kozmik Artifactz

Hidden Since the Foundation of the World – Bad Winter

Hidden Since the Foundation of the World is a new four-piece from Amsterdamn, that combines doom with drone, atmospheric with rock noir, psych with metal and gaze with heaviness. And the result is something entirely unpredictable and apocalyptic. They’ve released more tracks, but the icy soundscape whine that is Bad Winter will not leave you cold. Cinematic and gripping, that one track might even make you long for an incredibly Bad Winter… Just so you can play this track over and over...

Doublestone - De Falske Kongers Tid

You know they’re back right? And have been since September! The Danish trio Doublestone! One single so far, The False King, De Falske Kongers Tid. We can only hope this is the start of a new chapter, a new roll of the dice and a new hand of cards. For even though we only ever mentioned their Wingmakers album on Stoner HiVe, we have always loved all they’ve put out. All of it!

Bear, Man Dangerous – When We Cease To Understand The World

We’re already there, sweet Bear, Man Dangerous. Aren’t we? I sure as hell can't make heads of tails out of most of everything anymore... But still, their new track When We Cease To Understand The World expertly twists genres into knots and lights them on fire. Shoegaze bleeds into sludge; psychedelia melts into doom. It’s beautiful, ugly, and utterly consuming, almost chokingly so!

Minot - Walls//People Pleaser

Lo-fi garage punk. Indeed, that’s Minot for ya! But upbeat! A three piece from Missoula, Montana that goes all the way back to the sixties and hits you with a Sonics kind of attitude. A jittery fuzz tale, where one track rattles like fluorescent cubicle blues and frustrated howls into the void. Flipside People Pleaser drifts in sugary decay, ghostly pop haunts the hop. Sparse drums, raw pulse, garage grit. Heartbeat breakdown, smokey honesty and a rhythm you can’t shake! I like Minot!

Tempted? – For You Only

Artizans PR are always spreading the good word about some great new rock bands! Usually from the Mediterranean. And new fourpiece Tempted? hails from Greece! For You Only is the first single for an album that will probably see the light somewhere in 2026. Nineties vibing and grunge toned, the songs sings about a ‘deep romantic disappointment’ . Which ofcourse fits snugly with the grunge influences. I’m tempted to announce that Tempted? might just be one of the great bands to emerge out of Greece next year!

Wickermän – Dagsländan

"Dagsländan" or "The Mayfly" as it would translate to in English is a short poem written by the Linnéa Wetterbrandt, a close friend to the band. The text is a short reflection on how life would have been if we only got to live, just like a mayfly, for one day. It’s their second single but our first foray into the world of formed in this year, Wickermän and we certainly hope not our last. This isn’t one day fly material, but honest hard rock, seventies touches, stonerized moments and prog oriented. A new Swedish band to watch out for!

There Is No Spoon - The Sound Of Doom To Come [Part 1]

There Is No Spoon is a four piece instrumental band from Berlin, Germany that obviously wants to marry the existentialism and metaphysical to their atmospheric doom metal and art rock. A bit of drone and a bit of noise and promise that the three track The Sound Of Doom To Come [Part 1] is the first of four parts that chronicle a world collapsing under the weight of its own noise… Let’s keep an ear out for that!

Hibernaut – Obsidian Eye

Hibernaut – Obsidian Eye
Self-released / Kozmik Artifactz / Olde Magick Records – 2025
Metal, Doom
Rated: ****

They’ve released the first single and title track for this album on May 9th. And they’ve done it in the perfect way in my opinion. For it is not the opening track of the album and more importantly, they released it with a great b-side. Not that many bands do that anymore, but we love b-sides and we therefor love Hibernaut! But you might have already known that. For even though we never got around to mentioning their debut album Ingress on Stoner HiVe, it was and is still one of our favorite albums from 2023. Obsidian Eye is the single and the title of the new album to be released on July 11th. That’s only a few days away! A few more days till you get treated to a most wonderful doom metal album. Dense and compressed in all the right ways, the six tracks seems to sludge fight and mow everything to the side as they pummel and pounce. It truly is a slaughter, with guitars that cascade upon each other. Gravelly vocals that are as heavy as they are chased. Bass work with a continuously ominous touch and drums that turns every track into a monolithic statement of intent. You’ve heard those ten ton heavy records, but this is dropping a hundred tons upon you! And while you are buried beneath all that massiveness, that’s when you hear it, when that subliminal groove takes over and the strange melody turns that menacing feeling into exhilaration and jubilation. One look into the Obsidian Eye is enough to turn you into a Hibernaut… Petrified, but inside rocking like a madman and feeling free…

Volume - Joy Of Navigation (a trip through the eternal unknown)

Volume - Joy Of Navigation (a trip through the eternal unknown)
Kozmik Artifactz / Golden Robot – 2024
Rock, Stoner, Desert, Space
Rated: *****

Almost instantly, the illusions will start. Shifting gear on you like some quicksilver mind-altering odyssey. There’s something absolutely freeing about listening to the new Volume album. It will pilot you into the unknown and once you get locked into that state you know you will have to take it all the way. For that is the pure and beautiful Joy Of Navigation. And that by sheer coincidence, cough cough, is the title of the album. Recorded in the legendary Rancho De La Luna studio under guidance of the maestro himself: Dave Catching. Who of course had to also deliver a few synth and Moog touches, because when the energy flows the right way, you can’t help yourself. And that makes the Volume outfit even more star-studded, founded by Patrick Brink, for a small moment in time member of Fu Manchu taking guitar and vocals. Ed Mundell from Monster Magnet on lead guitar. Mike Amster from Mondo Generator, Nebula and Blaak Heat Shujaa on Drums. Abraham William Parker on bass and loads of other instruments. Star-studded and the lift off of opener Mercury Pull will have you zooming around the stars in no time. Over nine minutes filled to the brim with freak out psychedelic rock, punked up acid and something entirely proto. Sixties love, seventies blend, mantric and liberating. Throw out your arms, go wild! You’re gonna wanna take this trip all the way. Title tack Joy Of Navigation grounds you, goes wilder still and offers up more of a garage and punk take on the freak rock they are delivering throughout. But there’s still that stoner trucking, desert rocking that keeps you zooming. Heavy Sunshine opens entirely like a radical lift off, aiming for something explosive and a different planet all together, but then they just keep it going and keep you coming. That slow rising anticipation almost become unbearable. A cover version of The Golden Age by Swedish Union Carbide Productions goes into the laidback flow of the desert even more, the rootsy energy it contains and their version sounds like it could be added to the Orquesta Del Desierto live set without any problem. Spacebaby has a definite Monster Magnet touch, subdued monolithic and with so much of raw freedom coursing through all those guitar lines it will drive you crazy. It’s entirely liberating listening to Joy Of Navigation, its full Volume, it’s planet Volume and the living is good!

Number 13

Number 13

Are you ready for some proto touched doom jive? We leave Fu Manchu on Number 14 and jump 36 points to reach Number 13. Where we find the sophomore album by this Norwegian trio. That vintage, obscure, garage and steamy sound, that hazy and dirty atmosphere, it is all so highly addictive and drags you along a mind trip of gigantic proportions. And it will feel like one psychoactive and occult touched merry go round. Round and round it goes! Gigantic is also a word one can use for the hooks, the riffs and the efficiency in which it is all delivered. The bass that seems to bop from basement walls like the relentless dripping of a leak. And a touch of sinister gives it that ominous feeling, punctuated by the drums that stomp like those evil footsteps in a dark cul de sac in the middle of the night. We might meet the devil there… But before I burn, I need to listen to this album just one more time…

According to all of your votes, on Number 13 we find:

The Kryss Talmeth Experience - When The Wheels Fall Off

The Kryss Talmeth Experience - When The Wheels Fall Off
Kozmik Artifactz – 2024
Rock, Stoner, Blues, Psych
Rated:

From the very beginning of ‘When The Wheels Fall Off’, The Kryss Talmeth Experience kicks in the door with one foot of stoner rock, with the second one planted firmly in heavy blues. The lyrics to ‘Jump in the River’ state “Feel the rhythm in your soul, feel that rhythm takin’ hold.” Well, you feel that rhythm of the bass and drums, playing together and off one another absolutely tearing it up. I can imagine the rumbling of a wooden stage in a small pub somewhere, if I were so lucky to attend a live show. You also feel the soulfulness of the blues dipped vocals, dripping like thick syrup with a minor amount of grit on the back end. The blues run so deep, even the guitar isn’t safe from its influence. When it’s not knocking out chunky distorted stoner riffs on rhythm, the leads are embedded with a mixture of it and a 70’s retro feel. ‘When The Wheels Fall Off’ is a seriously feel-good album encapsulating the rock ‘n roll spirit and its bluesy origins. The wheels are tightly secured upon this well-oiled machine, so hop upon and let The Kryss Talmeth Experience take you for a ride!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Hi my fellow heavy music fiends! It’s been awhile… A while since we did a Quick Fire Friday segment! And with the new Doom Charts Peroration post coming online later on, there will be tons of music for everyone to dig into! Can you handle the deluge? Well, we’ll keep the amount of words about the list below to a minimum. And we know… There is so much out there, so much good and heavy stuff, and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. But here it is… Another Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Orme – No Serpents, No Saviours

And all those times I visited Hertfordshire, I never knew it was bristling with all this heavy underground talent! But Orme (not the Toulouse, France one) is yet another outfit from that area, and they bring you ten ton heaviness in glorious form! The form of a one track, almost twenty-five minute long, death-doom No Serpents, No Saviours. Coming out on August 23rd, this is one big droning extravaganza that will decimate and leave you weak and weary. The unholy whispers being the only respite keeping you from the absolute end of your tether…

Aten – Aten

Australian experimental metal with a droning edge, sludge tones, grindcore and post-metal influences. That’s the Aten project that releases it’s  debut album through Lint Music. Which is only logical since the man behind this project is Brad Hayne the founder of Lint Music founder and Cell Temple. Not to be confused with the death metal outfit Aten from Iceland or the other death metal one from Albania. A lot of Aten, and this Aten is a lot! Not completely wasted by listening to Orme yet?  Well, dive into Aten and be totally obliterated…

Vibravoid – On Empty Streets

Out. Just now! The new single and video On Emptry Streets by psychedelic stalwarts Vibravoid! Taken from their new We Cannot Awake album out August 23rd through Tonzonen Records. It’s their own tasty mixture of neo-kraut and psychedelic rock, urging beats with an eighties touch and signals coming in from a not too distant future or neighboring dimension, dystopian and estranging. But very captivating!

Ghost Frog – Shadow Club

More dystopia for you all! This time coming in from the Portland four named Ghost Frog! The first single Shadow Club for their Galactic Mini Golf album coming out November 5, 2024. A bit of grunge and that lazy nineties alternative, some psych and high fidelity head nod that will surely make you buy multiple copies of this single.

It’s Volume and their new single Joy of Navigation of the album with the same name. It comes out November 1st through Golden Robot Records and Kozmik Artifactz. Recorded at Rancho De La Luna it had that desert punk vibe as much as nods back to the sixties. Infectious and kicking out every kind of jam!

In Ashes – Burned & Disposed

Guadalajara, Mexico seems to be a well of inspiration and a cesspool of gritty doom. In Ashes is a new four piece founded in 2023 and Burned & Disposed is their debut two-track release. A filthy atmosphere filled with despair, portrayed by traditional doom and always metal toned. And then they suddenly add this otherworld guitar part in Arson. And open up with all their abilities even more during the majestic Day One track. I need to call Rob Hammer to get him to nail this down!

Out for a month or two, it naturally escaped out attention cause we were on an off grid holiday! But luckily, Your Highness always finds a way to crawl back into your blood! And Fire To The Storm will not just set fire to the storm, but also your blood and soul! Stoner metal, hardcore elements, sludge toned and absolutely wonderful. It’s the first single to the new album Under The Weight, coming out October 11th on Polderrecords.

Robot God – Portal Within

Robot God – Portal Within
Kozmik Artifactz – 2024
Rock, Psych, Space, Stoner, Prog, Fuzz
Rated: *****

Two years after the much acclaimed Worlds Collide album, the Sydney, Australia three called Robot God are back with a new release called Portal Within. Comprised out of four songs, lasting almost forty-two minutes, the album is here to take you on a journey. And even if the title suggests this will go inwards, the expansiveness of the compositions will surely make it extend outwards as well. For the four tracks are all like that free rock, long form, jam based, psychedelic and progressive rock we all adore and long for. But with a definite stonerrock and riff revering undercurrent, it also has that sweet and dusty desert vibe. Half way through that first song Long Way Round you are jogged awake out of your lovely cosmic slumber by vocals which take you down to earth and into the desert. They tell of a storm approaching, and it does, for that ending maelstrom turns the composition into a cosmic storm of gigantic proportions that seems to serve as a quick knockout punch ending. But before you get there, the seventies inspired guitar solo first, the motoring riffage that leads up to that eye of the storm, the quiet section, where the guitar solo goes bluesy and proggy all have you traversing this windswept and baking hot extremely wide landscape. Following track Illusion of Order, with six minutes on the clock, is the shortest track on the album. Strident, yet sliding vocal lines, pull you along in the song, where the majestic, low and dirty, bass work sets the scene for something atavistic stonerrock. So incredibly gritty, sandblasted and exhuming this dry heat, Illusion of Order is there for the perfect generator party. Since the title track is called Portal Within, we shall refrain from commenting where it took us. Cause we would not want to influence your journey in this case. And then there’s final track Nazare, which definitely takes me back to my time at that legendary beach in Portugal. The long straight of beach, the slow rolling waves. There were no monster waves during that time. And this nine minute track of Nazare seems to hint at those tranquil days, lounging in the sun, riding those perfect rollers. For yes, there seem to be those lovely sounds of ocean, before the guitar, with a minor Mediterranean touch, starts up. As soon as the guitar shifts in heaviness that Mediterranean also hints at a slower version of surf rock influences. And the once again the vocals, instilling their surfpoke message. Ride the wave. Take the ride. Or be sure to ride that massive one called your life. Well, and the new Robot God album Portal Within is definitely that, one hell of a ride!

Lord Mountain – The Oath

Lord Mountain – The Oath
King Volume Records / Kozmik Artifactz – 2023
Doom, Metal, Traditional, Rock, Stoner
Rated: ****

Coming in second on the January 2023 Doom Charts, was Lord Mountain and their new release The Oath. An album that the Doom Charts Contributors had been spinning since early December when the promo arrived. An album not everyone might have been expecting, unless they had received word about their lone single back in 2020. Cause before that, there was only that self-titled debut EP in 2016 and then a lot of silence. That’s quite a few years. But we can sort of safely state, it was worth the wait. For the Californian four return with a golden nugget of traditional styled metal. That vintage sounding doom, with overtones of power riffs and fantasy styled lyrics, that thanks to the vocalist, will surely have you imagining those savage quests and perilous journeys you always hoped you would experience at least once. Indeed, the eight tracks on The Oath will feel like a full-on adventure, filled with enough mystique and lore to last you a lifetime. Those galloping rhythms, the flying guitar solos, those drums giving all the compositions so much breathing room and yes, that definitive vintage feeling. Cause even if there are guitar parts that will surely make you think about the eighties metal era, most of it takes you back to the seventies and what we now usually think off as proto. But whatever era you might think off as the riffs fly around your ears, the vocals will drag you away from those thoughts and will simply deliver you to the metal worshipping altar. Cause that’s what Lord Mountain does best, deliver you everything good about metal. And doom. And it will surely have you make a solemn promise to listen to more doom… And metal… And Lord Mountain!

Robot God – Worlds Collide

Robot God – Worlds Collide
Kozmik Artifactz – 2022
Rock, Stoner,
Rated: ****

Worlds Colllide came out in the middle of September of this year and is the sophomore full-sized release by Sydney, Australia trio Robot God. Four chugging tracks that marry stoner to a bit of psych, space, and doom and all brought to you with an intense and pristine production value. Indeed, the mix is so well done, that the lighter moments will immediately make you soar through space and the heavy make you stomp on the terra like a wild animal. Which of course is one way to make Worlds Colllide. Take opener Sleepwalking, with its eleven minutes, the abundance of riffs and solo’s tumbling over each other, the way the vocals take the exact amount of light and that airy drum, it will indeed make you dream, make you feel the electricity in the air and feel your hairs stand up. It’s one of the songs; with all these different layers and sections that have this lingering ability. They will stay with you as you move on to the following track. And you probably don’t even want to, with that atavistic rolling stoner riff ending. As the Floydian opening of Ready To Launch, transitions into the riveting rock, with the drums offering cues to what’s coming you will indeed be ready. Ready for the wild ride that will surely come, the rhythmic moves, the guitar pushing and pulling. Subtle, yet punishing and with no resistance possible. Two more tracks will follow, with title track Worlds Collide closing the Robot God show, their show on Earth, for even though that track will take the spacey cues through the vocals, much of it sounds much more grounded and yet still retains some of that impressionistic touch they started out with, and that middle section will surely mesmerize. What a fine ride! And hey, did not come in for nothing on that Fourth spot of the September Doom Charts. So, if you haven’t ridden with the Robot God yet, you’d better get your spacey stoner groove on! And if you scroll further down, we might just have the fix for you!

Gypsybyrd – Visions

Gypsybyrd – Visions
Self-released / Kozmik Artifactz – 2022
Psychedelic/Doom/Stoner
Rated: *****

Jake W. Lewis (Burn Ritual/King Earth) ethralled us all back in 2020 with his debut as Gypsybyrd: six hazy, languid pools of shimmering Doom-tinged Psychedelia that had the pundits raving! Gypsybyrd returns now with the sophomore album Visions and the trademark fuzziness and soporific, swirling ambiences are all there, only this time emboldened by both craft and encouragement. Opener (and first single) "Crimson Earth" automatically resumes where Gypsybyrd left off...a rumbling, yet serene riffer that draws the ear and sparks the attention. Next track "Born Of Electricity" opens on stabs of Hammond and heavy power chords before settling into a mid-paced groove, Jake's shrill vocals providing a vehicle of trippy lyrics to flavor the punch. Bluesy riffs are the order of the day on "Fly With Me" - Sabbathian, yet unmistakably Gypsybyrd in it's delivery and ambience - the organ swells and guitar work weaving hypnotic patterns and emotions. A snaking bassline ushers in "The Frog" - another languid, ponderous piece brimming with echo and atmosphere, complete with understated but apropos guitar before developing into a Funk-filled Santana - like groove towards the end. It's all systems normal on track 4, "A Soul On Fire": more slow, heavy riffage with presence and intent. A heavy bassline introduces the fuzz-smeared trudge of "Captive By Your Choices", whilst "Earth Meets The Sun" provides an ambient atmosphere of bass and sonic architecture, but as with all of Gypsybyrd's music, is dreamy and ethereal. The closing track "Travel The Universe" is built on a solid Doom riff, echoing voices and fuzz-laden guitar fueling a heavy, heavy monster tune with spaced-out guitar solo, bass drones and that Vox AC40 swirl doing the business throughout. Visions is an album of immense pleasure to recline and listen to. It takes the listener off to journeys unforeseen, wrapped in a loving cloak of Lysergia and skill.

Number 17

Number 17

An album that jumped into the Top 20 thanks to those final lists that were sent during the final night and on the final morning before the final deadline passed. Jumping enough to settle 20 points above those three we found on Number 18. A band that many voted for and many lists featured it high on their list; but as mentioned before the Number 15 to 40 are all pretty close together in comparison to what comes later and before. So anyway, those last few lists, made it reach the Top 20… Their 2018 record got spun to an incredibly degree over here and the new one just improves on every aspect of that record. With eastern and world influences their psychedelic folk rock often leaves you breathless and giddy with joy; that in a world that seems to be burning at both ends, a release like this can be so uplifting and delightful. The melancholy that might be present on a track or two gets powered over by those sixties and seventies inspired grooves, the wide open atmosphere and that bright shimmering light at the end of the tunnel. No more tea for me please, just put this record on as pick me up and feel the warmth blow away all that negative energy and that cold winter spirit… And by sheer coincidence (cause that is how the Great Magnet rolls) the honorable JJ Koczan put up a review of the album on The Obelisk this very day… On Number 17 we find!

Honeybone – Spheres

Honeybone – Spheres
Kozmik Artifactz – 2020
Rock, Hard, Psych, Garage, Stoner
Rated: *****

Lost for words. Mind blown. Just a few of the sentences whirling through my head as I finish my first session of Honeybone’s new album Spheres! (pause, for effect here.) A few characters I entered a week or two ago, after which I stopped typing and starting listening again. And the record has been on constant and heavy rotation over here. So I guess we should quickly order the vinyl before it’s sold out and finish this mention filled with a ton of love and admiration for Honeybone’s Spheres! The three originally from Dunedin, New Zealand but now residing in Melbourne, Australia have delivered one magical hammer strike to the gods. Hard rock fueled by that golden bluesy seventies sound, crunchy garage and psychedelic overtones all wrapped up into one neat captivating, enchanting and truly addictive package. Featuring drummer and vocalist, yes drummer and vocalist, Rachel Trainor, bass and backing vocalist Peter Jermakoff and guitarist/vocalist Drew Handcock the forty two minutes of Sphere start off dreamy, leisurely and full of harmony. But once Artificial Tears dries up and we enter the world of Bruises, we slowly but assuredly creep towards something much more explosive. After which this tidal push and pull of submerged subdued and explosive continues on and culminates in the majestic Metathesiophobia track. A righteous cathedral of a song that builds and builds and warps and distorts and will mesmerize every stoner rock loving body out there! No time to pause now, not even for effect, on to order both vinyl versions of this amazing Honeybone album!

Lord Loud - Timid Beast

Lord Loud - Timid Beast
King Volume Records / Kozmik Artifactz - September 2020
Garage, hard rock, psych
Rated: ****

From Van Nuys, California burst forth garage rock bruisers Lord Loud with their third release, Timid Beast. The two piece dole out cut after cut of stripped down, explosive riffs and relentless, rocksteady drums, like a melodic White Stripes that time traveled to the 70s. Amp shredding distortion coats the bluesy licks while hazy, drifting vocals provide a contrast to the abrupt stomp of the guitar. A Zeppelin influence is put to good use on tracks such as opener "Dirty Seeds" and follow-up "Without You", adding a funky touch to the hard-hitting riffs. The warped, tripped out solo of the latter is of special note as well, and adds a layer of weird to the duo's minimalist style. "Lady Sunday" takes an especially upbeat approach with a driving Hives-style attack and backing claps, and some tasty Hammond even lurks in the mix.   The vibe of Timid Beast flows smoothly between such raucous punk energy and a laid-back, bluesy style. After moving back and forth in mood across the tracks, the Californians sneak in "Turbulence", a surprise instrumental ballad of delicate strings that brings the party to a classy end. Not settling for just feel good garage rock, Lord Loud bring an explosive, melodic style to bear in Timid Beast, reminiscent of the White Stripes' debut years ago in its sheer in-your-face energy and independent spirit.
