The weeks are flying by! And soon we will depart on our three weeks off grid holiday adventure, hugging the border between France and Germany as we go south to Italy, towards the Turin region, and the mountains in the vicinity. But we still have a few days to do a few HiVe posts… Although probably not as many as we did last week! First up: A FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for the Hypnosaur album Afterlife! Coming at you in a few hours!

Last week we posted quite a few words by our inhouse poet: Ronny Dijksterhuis. Did you manage to look at  Stump Grinder? Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell? Gnod? Or his faster than shadow work for the Quick Fire Friday? Which we continued on with a Quick Fire Weekend! (Saturday  & Sunday) Those three Quick Fire posts along will give you twenty-four albums, ep’s and singles to check out! And we upped words on the amazing new Iguana Death Cult and stunning Robot God. And then there were those two Premieres! The monastic doom album by Maliciouz went live on our little blog. And the beautiful new single Adrift by Phe! I hope you listened to those on the blog or on their own pages the day after. Wonderful stuff! O’ and me mentioned the Doom Charts Peroration, cause we were at Sonic Whip Festival went that one went live. Last but not least; we put the words online about the new Hypnosaur album Afterlife… And that beautiful album will see its FULL ALBUM PREMIERE on our little HiVe in only a few hours… You ready for that? And have you been checking all of it out? Hope so… And we are truly honored if you did!

Single Premiere – Phe – Adrift

Single Premiere

Phe – Adrift

If the honorable Bucky Brown says that 'Phe is short for Phenomenal' on their very first EP release, you know this is a band that has something special going on. Well, that little trio from the south of the Netherlands will be releasing a new album called Closer To The Sun somewhere after the summer has ended. And tracking the growth from that first EP to Glooming Dawn in 2020 and Nothing Else Is Real in 2023 was stunning. But hearing the first single: Adrift will blow each and everyone away. The growth is PhePhe stands for Phenomenal! We're honored to present to you the Single Premiere for the brand new Phe track: Adrift

For some the new single Adrift might scratch that King Buffalo itch or quench the Kal-El urge... But for all Adrift will feel like the right word, for this how Phe pulls the listener in. You are not dropped into a song, but it is slowly untethering from gravity. The new single moves slowly through the cosmos as it mirrors the psychonaut on board's half remembered journey through a heat-hazed desert night. Riffs arrive in slow waves rather than clean edges and support the collapsing dreamscapes. Hypnotic repetition beomes the kind of spell that pulls everything inward as time seems to stretch outwards...

Guitars blur into shimmering spacey haze, sometimes crushing down like tectonic plates, sometimes dissolving into distant echoing lights. The rhythm section steadies it all, not driving, but drifting through the currents like the vessel we are all bound in. Vocals cut through like transmissions from another time, human, pained, but slightly removed, effects leaving you no choice but to trust the guide as you transverse along....

Adrift is heavy, but weightless at the very same time... A slow orbit, through dust, distortion and an endless open expanse. Surrender is the only way forward...

Morning everyone! No use dwelling in the past right? We’ll deal with the bastards soon enough! Even though we shall continue to do these weekly glances into the week past. It helps us focus and pay attention to what we did and what we are about to do. Only the Erronaut, Blues Pills and Fringe Sociology posts went up. But they were all good and makes us giddy to do more this week. We hope so! Even though the new edition for the Doom Charts also needs to be cooked up. But I suspect a review or two to appear today and tomorrow… And that great interview we did with Phil Hey from Psychlona to pop up soon enough as well! Have a great week everyone and keep listening to everything heavy!

The Doom Charts for October 2023

DOOM CHARTS

OCTOBER 2023

“Don’t take away the music
It’s the only thing I’ve got
It’s my piece of the rock…”

~ Tavares

Nobody can listen to more than a fraction of all the music ever released, during their lifetime. And even the amount of music being released on a daily basis in what we have started calling the Heavy Underground is already so immense, it remains forever completely and totally awe-inspiring. It was the main reason Lucas started the Doom Charts back in 2015. To somehow try and get many of the ones that dive into that massive ocean of heaviness on a daily basis, and who write, blurb or podcast about what they discover somewhere on the internet, all grouped together. So, that together, they could possibly make some sort of list of the most important ones. Ofcourse, music is totally subjective and the Heavy Underground is of course another tribe, which inspires tribalism. It is one part of why there are so many glowing reviews about the albums we listen to. Cause even us outsiders, who finally found an every growing niche the feel at home in, do want to belong to this lovely tribe of heavy rock fiends. Or at least I do. Another, perhaps even more important reason is what we started the intro with. There is so much music! So, why bother listening to the albums you don’t love so much and why write about those, when you can profess your love for the ones you do. Well, below, those amazing girls and boys that make up the Doom Charts cabal do just that. They selected the albums they loved from the past month, sent in their lists and wrote a few words of praise… A Top 40 of amazing records, all of which deserve every bit of your attention… Go check’m out! Check’m all out!

There she is! In all it's blazing glory! Spreading like dragon fire! What a wild and wonderful month October was... Once again! All forty on this list are stunning...

Of the ones that made it, personal votes went out to: Howling Giant, Bahboon, MOOCH, Occult Hand Order, Phe, The Heavy Minds, Morag Tong, Vanishing Kids, Aiwass, wolf prayer, The Silver Linings, The Sound of Origin, Bismut, Lucid Sins, Giant Lungs, Ego Planet , DUSK, Purple Kong & Death Chant

And we already wrote something about the new: Bismut, Occult Hand Order, Phe, Morag Tong, The Silver Linings & The Sound of Origin !

But I could have voted for all of them, and should have! Will be checking my list first to see listen to the ones I voted for that unfortunately did not make it...

Before starting the rundown with Number 40: SPECK!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

Another week in the books. One filled with hectic scrambling to get certain articles done in time. And one filled with a sadness in our bones that we couldn’t attend DesertFest Antwerp this year. But luckily we had so much great music to listen to again! To get us through it all… And hey, Helldorado festival is just around the corner! Plus, whenever Kyle, Reek and even Doktor420 deliver something for the HiVe we always love that week! Did you listen to Bigstrut yet? Or Phe? Or Tumanduumband’s Throne of Grief release? And Doktor420 wrote about his experiences listening to Visite du Temple Inné by Crabe. And since Doktor420 writes something once every two years, this must be something you need to listen to as well! Enjoy the new week! And all that new and heavy music!

Phe - Nothing Else Is Real

Phe - Nothing Else Is Real
Self-released - October 2023
Stoner rock, blues, grunge
Rated: ****

The Netherlands' well-kept secret that is Phe should be well-kept no longer, if their newest album "Nothing Else Is Real" has anything to say about it. This is an immaculate, patient record, one that unfolds with dark grooves and spacious soundscapes that gently reel the listener in, and before you know it you're immersed til the end. Opener and hook-heavy track "Mirror The Ghost" kicks things off with crunching, deliciously desert-rock riffs, driving forward beneath the band's iconic, full-throated vocal delivery. Following cut "Saviour" brings in some stoner stomp with a touch of boogie, but in hindsight these first two tracks are almost red herrings,  the epic centerpiece that is "The Age Of The Misunderstood" hits. Over the course of 12 minutes, Phe craft a beautiful, longform stoner opus. Each note is given its due time, perfectly placed to build into a slight chug under soaring licks, while the drums are tight as can be, laying down a steady bedrock as the tune expands outwards and upwards into increasingly psychedelic territory. It'd be easy enough to write a whole review of just those 12 minutes, but Phe continue to deliver the goods with moody, muscular numbers "Broken Thoughts" and "We Are" to close out the album with added heft. "Nothing Else Is Real" is an accomplished, nuanced record that's made with a painstaking attention to detail, delivering a dark and magnificent vision of stoner rock. Bravo, Phe.

G’morn! We used to do this little tom-tom write up at the bottom of the weekly list. And we shall try to start that up again. A sort of glance back on the week that has passed. So, as we are still recovering from the Phe album release party from Saturday, that was a good party! We’ll try to keep it short and sweet… September had a gazillion great releases; and October is shaping up to be the same. And we hope to write a few words about a handful of them. Last week we mentioned those two Umbra albums, by Gévaudan and Kadabra. We wrote something about Spider Kitten, The Silver Linings and Morag Tong. And we were extremely happy to see Reek of STOOM write something cool about Tumanduumband and Kyle SB about 10% Reptile. If you haven’t had the chance yet, scroll down or visit the blog to read up on those. Later on today, we’ll have another one by Kyle SB going live! But for now, we’re gonna try and get a bit of sunlight and see if we can get that head straight after that wild Phe party!

Worldwide Premiere - Phe - Saviour

Phe - Saviour

The three called Phe from Helmond in the Netherlands will be releasing their new almost forty minute long Five-track EP somewhere in October. Perhaps they should just call it an album, cause the duration warrants it. They released their self-titled debut EP back in 2017 and followed that with Glooming Dawn in 2021. We had Kyle SB / Shastabeast review it back then. This time we asked both Kyle SB / Shastabeast and Reek of STOOM to give some ear and time to their new single Saviour. So… Before you click play on the premiere of the new Phe single Saviour. Or after you clicked play… Read those words and see if you agree with what the two had to say about Saviour!

Reek of STOOM: “With a new album on the horizon, Netherlands Stoner Doom outfit Phe offer up a first single "Saviour": A gnarly, gritty piece of crunching riffs, piercing solos and epic proportions! A great introduction to a long-awaited return!”

Kyle SB / Shastabeast: “Dutch rockers Phe return with a slab of huge, fuzzy riffage in their new single "Saviour", off their upcoming EP to be released this October. As emotive and heavy as ever, the lads from Helmond have cranked up the scale of their sound to epic proportions. Saviour is all big riffs, soaring leads, and Ruud's always distinctive and powerful vocals. There's a bluesy touch to the solo starting at the halfway point as well, before the song flies off into parts unknown with winding licks and spacey keys. If "Saviour" is any indication of things to come, October will belong to Phe.”

Here's the new
Phe single SAVIOUR!

Phe - Saviour

That Dutch trio Phe are set to release their new five track EP somewhere in October. But are giving us all a first taste of what’s to come by setting free their first single Saviour. And this here little post is just to let you know, we’ve heard it, we love it, and we are honored to premiere that single one day early! So, better be tuning in to Stoner HiVe on Wednesday June 7th! Cause that one track alone already seems to dwarf what they did on their debut EP and their full-sized album from 2021 called Glooming Dawn. As Bucky once stated: ‘Phe is short for Phenomenal’ and Saviour is here to prove just that! Don't believe me, believe the Saviour...

We had our little goddaughter for the weekend, which meant very limited time to go through all those May Doom Charts albums. But we shall continue that run down as of today. And when Queens of The Stone Age drop an album, you of course sit up and pay attention. But I sat up ever straighter hearing that new EP by Phe. Five tracks leagues ahead of what they did with the first EP and their album Glooming Dawn. And we are honored to let you guys know, we will be premiering their first single Saviour on Wednesday!! Can’t wait for everyone to hear it!

Temple Fang & Phe – Live at Muziekcafé Helmond

Tomorrow, April 1st, some might be so lucky to catch Temple Fang perform the second show of their new Tour at Muziekcafé in Helmond. The long form, space rock, psychedelic masters are finally able to take the stage again and hypnotize all those lucky bastards in the crowd! Support will be done by Phe; the Helmond three that never got to celebrate the release of their Glooming Dawn album, due to that sordid pandemic business. So, the best band of the Netherlands and the best band of Helmond on one bill… You might need to score yourself a ticket! Or more, cause your neighbor might need to see this as well before they become as big as the Beatles!

The Ragged Kin – Before Spring

The Ragged Kin – Before Spring
Self released – 2021
Rock, Hard, Blues,
Rated: ****

Been waiting to see this release pop up. Mostly because one of the guitar players played in Phe before Phe became Phe and still featured five dubious dingbats. But this is different, this is rowdy blues, this is hard rock, this is southern influenced alternative rock, this is The Ragged Kin. The five from Helmond in the South of the Netherlands that make up The Ragged Kin recorded their debut album Before Spring during the first lockdown of the pandemic that started in 2020. Separately recorded in the rehearsal studio and mixed at home we are treated to eight bluesy rockers with a definite swing and swagger. You can just as easily perceive Allman Brothers influences as well as Stones, Doors or Cult. The starting point is always the blues, the blues rock and the scruffy and shuffling take on it. Soulful lead vocals brimming with character and a bass softly emphasizing a lot of melody. Tasteful guitarwork with supple solo efforts and effective drumming dominate this album that just never seems to falter; not just because of the ability of the players but also because of the well composed and warm compositions. Damn fine debut album and the perfect quiet storm Before Spring

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 10 Most Listened To Albums Last Week…

We’ll keep posting the Top 10 of last week. Because once again we listened to a lot of different albums, but had limited time to really dive into them. We also listened to some more podcasts than usual. Like the Doomed & Stoned, Hour Of The Riff & Deathrattle Podcast. And thanks to Reek of STOOM we even had our own Hums Of The HiVe. Check out his recent ones HERE! But anyway, the 10 bands listed above released something good and it will definitely continue to get a lot of spins! So check’m out! Check’m all out!
