We’re back from Austria and will soon be ready for action again… Only have to sift through about 300 emails on the Stoner HiVe account and a similar amount for the Doom Charts… Had a great snowboarding trip and listened to loads of Doom Charts Top 100 albums of 2023 over there, what a year it was, what quality! Let’s hope 2024 will bring a few as tasty as 2023 did! The list above is actually from the week before… And you know what time it is this Friday right? The first Friday of the new month, the Regular January Edition of the Doom Charts… All of you ready for it?

The Doom Charts for February 2023

Doom Charts

“Death is but a doorway, time is but a window, I’ll be back.”

~ Vigo

And we are back! Just like clockwork, every damn month again, the Doom Charts are back! The first Friday of the new month and here we are with the February list of forty albums that all those Contributors loved so dearly. A Friday that sees the release of many new albums as well, and since it’s Bandcamp Friday, well… Take your pick! Or buy them all! Three albums carried over from January. Which means there are 37 spanking new albums on the list below. And just so you know, a lot of the Contributors were struggling to whittle down their list of favorite albums to the 25 they are allowed to send in. And a lot of the Contributors stated they already have a massive list of amazing albums for March as well. Crazy. So much brilliant heavy rock, so many breathtaking albums. We love it. So, indeed, who ever said rock ‘n roll was dead, and never understood what Vigo knew all along…

The February Doom Charts are here!

It's Bandcamp Friday and it coincides with the February Doom Charts! Does this make things simpler or more complicated? Cause all those FORTY albums are absolute stunners!  Personal votes on this months' list went out to: Hail the Void, Cleõphüzz, Dead Shrine, Khan, Westing, WARP, Grandma's Ashes, Abanamat, POLYMOON, Rotor, Emperors Lair, Witch City Music / Old Mine Universe, Swell O, Wolves in Winter, Sandrider, Moodoom and CHILD! The only one we mentioned on the HiVe so far is WARP, but there surely will be more to follow soon... Check'm out! Check'm all out!!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

Warp – Bound by Gravity

Warp – Bound by Gravity
Nasoni Records – 2023
Rock, Stoner, Proto, Metal, Punk
Rated: *****

I never owned a fascist pig. If I had, I probably would have bought some kind of combine harvester or huge baler vehicle and backed over it. I never owned any other pig neither btw. But we of course realize that third track Your Fascist Pigs Are Back is not about those cute pink animals, but about those fascist motherfuckers that pollute the world with their horrible thinking and worse energy. And that song is an example of the way the WARP three have delved more into what their sound entails and what the message is they want to convey. For the three dive deeper into their daily existence and how it translates to what they see, hear, and feel. They then manage to convert that to lyrics and sound. And that as it turns out is this gritty and raw and harsh take on stoner, doom and psychedelic rock, which seems logical when you realize the three are from Tel Aviv, Israel where life is never easy, even though it might be the most liberal city of Israel. The Hunger is perhaps another example of the way WARP transforms their views into more substance driven rock. But there are no qualms about moving away from the message and the content and just going off into a guitar driven spacey freak out. Which they do just as often as just riffing it all towards a homerun. The WARP three share vocal duties and by doing so give their sophomore Bound By Gravity so much depth and identity, it feels at certain moments that you are listening to a completely different record. But then there’s always some punk energy, psychedelic touch or proto metal take to bring it all together again. For that is perhaps the most alluring aspect of it all, that even though there is a lot of harshness, punk energy, there is also an intense groove going on or a cosmic escape towards the void. Bound By Gravity, it seems WARP has found a work around and used the heavy bogged down sounds to propel themselves skywards!

But as we return to the regular schedule for the Doom Charts, we can also start doing more Stoner HiVe stuff. So, quite a few reviews are in the pipeline. Some of which are listed above and others will surely be on heavy rotation this week. But first, later today, a worldwide video premiere! So, stay tuned, check back later!

Warp – Warp

Warp – Warp
Nasoni Records – 2019
Rock, Garage, Psych, Stoner, Doom
Rated: ****

Warp, a three-piece from the outskirts of Tel-Aviv, Israel. We don’t know that many Tel-Aviv bands or even Israeli bands. And we suddenly wonder why that is? Perhaps it’s due to the constant turmoil the country is in? Or perhaps there simply aren’t that many to begin with? Whatever the reason, we are extremely glad the self-titled debut by Warp is now gracing our ears. Their lo-fi, gritty almost tinny sounding approach to psychedelic and stoner rock is infectious and electrical. There are some darker, doomier moments, but for the most part these tracks spark a fire in your soul, something that enriches the blues that resides in your belly. It revs you up and makes you head out into the wasteland in search of wild parties where the kool-aid is laced by default and smoke machines bellow out wave after wave after wave of green smoke… Blissfully happy you just whirl around and become the mad dervish you always longed to be. Through the haze you can still make out a band sweating what looks like pearls of blood out onto the stage and you can see their magical notes take on form and float and dance through the air. And you are there among them, dancing and whirling and waving… Now, sitting in a chair in the warroom as the final note dies away vague memories of battles with lampposts and walls and kerb stones, of knocking into people who said something about watch your step and threatened to drop him one, voices that sounded angry, and the hard unsympathetic stones of pavement, you wonder what just happened. I wasn’t really out there on that amazing and ferocious party, I was just here, at home, with my headphones on and my eyes closed… Warp, what an album! Let’s do that again!
